My wife made reservations for my birthday this past Sunday. When we arrived, we were greeted with friendly smiles and a very welcoming atmosphere. We were told that the brunch buffet was the offering and was directed to the room where the food was... Upon entering the room, my wife and I were both shocked and embarrassed as they were having what seemed like a full-on presentation. There were speakers, and the entire group (a good 40 people ) stared at us as if we were bothering them by coming in. We asked the hostess at the front desk if this was how it was supposed to go? She looked at me after speaking to someone else and gave us the thumbs up...... Thumbs down....way down. How can you have a full meeting going on the same time food is being offered to the public?? I was almost as if they were like, "Take it or leave it," we left it... I ordered a shot and a coffee beforehand so I could be ready after I grabbed my plate. My wife was disgusted, and we told our server ( Melissa, I believe ) that we were leaving. Instead of being ignorant, I downed the shot and asked for the check. We waited at the front desk to which Melissa dropped the receipt with a quick "here you go" and walked away... no "sorry about the confusion" from anyone... Again, I didn't want to be ignorant, paid for my shot, the coffee that never came, and even left a tip. Guys, you are popular, come on! It was my birthday and my wife was upset. The food is delicious although what we ordered and what was written on the menu did not come out as listed. When we asked for what was missing and what was stated on the menu it seemed as though we were being a burden. First time going here and had mixed reviews from friends who live in the area. Overall impression is Meh...Saturday night and place was pretty empty but it's summer and I'm sure others were experiencing the same. Nothing stood out on the menu, in the world where people eat with their eyes the menu was pretty boring. Lots of just outdated nothing really interesting items. It's summertime, why the hell would you have corned beef and cabbage or beef stew or chicken pot pie??! Menu looks like it has changed in quite a while. Try livening up the menu with seasonal items, vegetables and fresh ingredients. Even the burger read as very boring and not appealing at all! Anyhoo, on to the actual food. How do you make a Caesar salad have no flavor whatsoever?? A big bowl of lettuce, with flavorless dressing, couldn't add enough salt and pepper to it to bring it back to life. Entree was rigatoni bolognese...so the pasta wasn't what I expected but wasn't that bad. The rigatoni was the short thin type not the nice big wide tubes one thinks when ordering that pasta but wasn't bad. The sauce was flavorful but super thick with too much cheese. Wouldn't been nicer with actual rigatoni and little saucier and maybe even served with toasted garlic bread or something but they didn't choose to do that. Think they're suffering from the lack of business as there really was nothing to help them stand out above the other non impressive restaurants in the area. Think if they updated the menu, cleaned up the dining room it may have a better standing. Also the one server that screamed all over the dining room, yea that's gotta stop. Came last Saturday for breakfast and it was nice. It's a big restaurant with function rooms. Seats were very well spaced out and everyone had their masks on. Service was great. The salmon Benedict was the only thing I'm going to mention that I thought would have been different; I thought the salmon is a smoked salmon but this one was a salmon piece, like it was made for lunch or dinner. If you're looking for comfort food extraordinaire, I highly recommend bellying up to a table at the Mad Hatter in Weymouth. This is a no-frills kind of place, and the focus is clearly on cranking out tasty, satisfying dishes that hit all the marks for rib-sticking joy. Now that outdoor dining is allowed in Massachusetts, our party got a table outside under a tent in the parking lot. The restaurant's COVID-19 set up was very well done. The tables were spaced out, the servers all had masks, the menus had clearly just been cleaned, and there were hand sanitizer stations scattered all around. It was the perfect evening for outdoor dining, and the musician playing acoustic guitar standards at the far end of the tent was a very pleasant addition. Craving comfort food, I ordered the Yankee pot roast dinner with all the fixins. Our server was friendly and attentive, and while it took a little while for the food to arrive, we received a basket of warm dinner rolls right away that kept up busy until the main event. I received a heaping plate of food--thick slices of pot roast in gravy, boiled cabbage, sautéed carrots, mashed potatoes, and mashed turnips. It was a true feast! The food was absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were smooth and perfectly seasoned. The mashed turnips were a real treat with a slightly sweet flavor that complemented the savory potatoes very well. The cabbage and carrots were both cooked perfectly. The cabbage was not soggy at all - it had a springiness that was delightful and the flavor was spot on. And the carrots still had a bit of bite to them. I was no pleased that they weren't mushy. After devouring all the sides, I dug into the pot roast. It was truly heavenly! The meat was so tender and moist that it was falling off my fork. The flavor was wonderful, so rich and beefy. But it wasn't over the top; this was traditional pot roast exactly the way it should be--simple. I'm so pleased that the chef let the meat speak for itself without overdoing it on seasonings. The gravy was very tasty, too. It wasn't greasy at all and added a nice hit of beef flavor that really elevated the meat. My table-mates all seemed very pleased with their dishes, too: fish and chips, baked haddock, and a turkey burger. Portions were plentiful all around. Overall, I was extremely happy with the meal. The service was great and the food was delicious. The management added a $5 COVID-19 fee to the bill, but I knew about that in advance and I wasn't surprised by it. I was happy to pay a little extra if it helps keep a place like the Mad Hatter in business during such challenging times for restaurants. I drive from Southbridge Ma to Braintree Ma(1 hour and 15 minutes) to take out my nephew and his girlfriend to breakfast about once every couple of months. We always go Sunday mornings to the Mad Hatter for brunch. We arrived on 07/13 at 9am. Right away we were told by the hostess that we could only do the buffet and there was no other option. No problem. We waited a few minutes because the breakfast buffet was not complete. At 9:15am, we were given the clearance to go to the buffet. We went to the buffet and half of the serving trays were closed and empty. There was No omelette station. No carving station. All of the luncheon trays were empty. What was available?? Deviled eggs....scrambled eggs....bacon/sausage...pancakes and french toast. Homefries too. That was it. It was 50% open. My problem with this is I could go down the street and pay $12 for a breakfast similar. This is inexcusable when the customer has no other choice but to spend $25 per person for a brunch buffet that is 50% closed. As 10am approached, we were told other items were now on the buffet but that was 1 hour after we were seated. We were getting ready to leave. Our bill came to $80 for 3 of us. Gave the waitress a $20 tip. Really, really, really dissappointed. Just no excuse for this. Next time, I think we go elsewhere. read more

We got The Hungry Man which came with two eggs, toast, home fries, ham, bacon, Irish sausage and a choice of two pieces of French toast or pancakes. We opted to replace the French toast for the crunchy French toast -- it was alright, but could be better as it was burnt on the sides. We also got the waffles with real maple syrup. I don't think this place could scream "local" any louder. Just, everything about this place reinforces this fact. They don't have all this shiny gimmicky stuff... the ceiling tiles are likely original, and the floor is worn from years of locals. The location is clean, certainly, just "aged'. Interior is quite small, and you will likely end up bumping elbows with someone when you do end up getting a seat; all part of the local charm. Coffee is cheap, solid, and keeps flowing. Ordered some Crunchy French Toast for food. Came out with reasonable speed all things considered. Really, though, what a massive plate of food! There were 3 thick slices (6 pieces) of bread! When I saw it, I literally said "oh my arteries!" ... ahh well... you only live once. The crunch and level of sweetness are definitely on point. The crispness went well with the soft interior, and the sugar level was neither overwhelming, nor requiring syrup) My only critique is regarding the overall consistency. French Toast is a very finicky thing... you have to get the outside crisp while keeping the inside gooey. The inside of this particular interaction was soft, but not that gooey deliciousness found when you get it just right. Service was nice, and with there being a couple servers for this small location, attentive too! So, like it's been a while since I've reviewed a restaurant...I think. My sis and I wanted brunch and we were in Weymouth. We pulled up yelp and saw that this place was like down the road from where we were. We arrived, parked and had like a 20-25 min wait, and this wait was so worth the wait. I even texted my friend Gena and she was like "Delicious and worth the wait". We were seated at the bar and took a few min to peruse the menus. Originally I wanted the Hungry Man, but then I saw the prime rib breakfast plate. I ordered it medium well and my eggs over medium. It came with toast and I didn't even touch it...maybe like half a piece? Whatever. The prime rib took precedence over ALL else on my plate. The char and taste of this thing was so good and this is partially why my review is 5 stars. This prime rib will make me come back to have it again. Wasn't too crazy about the home fries. I mean they tasted good but it didn't have that char-y crunch that I favor. Service was awesome. No complaints here. Everyone was very accommodating and it was a warm atmosphere. We were treated to a lovely breakfast with friends and it was my first visit here. I ordered tea and was thrilled it came in a teapot (so rare and awesome!!). I ordered a cheddar cheese omelette which was cooked perfectly. The toast was a nice thick bread so warm and delicious. The omelette came with home fries which I loved. I ordered a side of crispy bacon which could have been a little crispier but all and all a delicious meal. My friend enjoyed the hungry man breakfast which looked delicious (and a huge meal in itself) it also came with a beautiful order of texas toast French toast which looked so fantastic! Constantly re-filled coffee cups, Pancakes and home fries pretty much rounded out the table. I can't leave without mentioning the waitress, she was fantastic and a pleasure to visit with. I'm only sorry I didn't t catch her name for this writing. We all enjoyed our time spent. We were not rushed from our table and really enjoyed our visit to this restaurant very much. Not sure why I ever wrote a 4 star review for my beloved Mad Hatter. That's insane! 5 stars for sure! I moved to the north shore since this review, and I still make the trek down south shore just for the pancakes. Best. Pancakes. EVER. Seriously, I'll fight you with by bare hands on this one. The taste, the texture, the size...everything is magical about these pancakes. There's a breakfast burger I get sometimes too, also amazing. It's huge, comes with eggs and home fries. The full Irish breakfast is his favorite, he has trouble trying other things on the menu because it's so good. We caught the buffet once, it was really amazing with big variety. Came on a Sunday during lunch time to find out they were only serving brunch buffet ($21 per adult). Since we were really hungry we decided to stay for the brunch buffet even though my boyfriend and I usually have a small appetite. They have a wide selection of food, from your typical breakfast food (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, French toast, cereal, fruit and yogurt) to more hearty options (jumbo shrimp, fresh made waffles and omelets upon request, and haddock) to pastries (muffins, bread, chocolate mousse). Even at 2PM they were still bringing out freshly made food so you don't need to worry about stale food. My favorite has to be the blueberry muffin. It was warm and had that melt-in-your-mouth texture. Our waitress confirmed the muffins were made fresh in-house. We also had way too many servings of their super thick slices of French toast. Our server was really nice and attentive, she took away our plates as soon as we were done and didn't rush us. She also refilled our beverages quite often. The restaurant itself was really huge. Also had the Hungry Man meal at the table that basically has everything but the kitchen sink, eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, ham, just a whole plate of goodness. The star was the Frosted Flakes crunchy French toast which I'm not a huge sweets person and it was spot on. This place is huge so great for guests, also has a nice sized function room. Had a pretty decent experience here. Ideally I would give this a 3.5 but the food gives it a little push up to 4. The place itself is really big with plenty of seating but we were quickly informed that they are currently understaffed so there was a wait. My order came with an English muffin and after reminding her multiple times, I gave up and just went without it). Despite that, I still didn't get too upset because she was an extremely friendly and easy going server - might be one of the best interactions I've had at a restaurant. Plus, I get that they were understaffed that day. As for food, I got the hungry man with blueberry pancakes. Usually I get full pretty quickly and would have to take my food to-go but somehow, I ate a crazy majority of this breakfast! My eggs were cooked to order, the bacon wasn't overcooked and burnt, and the sausages were delicious. The downside of this meal were the home fries. Seasoning was all there but they were more on the mushy side while I prefer home fries a little crispier on the outside. The overall meal was also a bit cold when it got to the table but all of this was forgotten when I tried the blueberry pancakes - wow!! I don't know what it was about it but my table couldn't stop eating them. Crispy on the edges while still fluffy in the middle. It was stuffed with plenty of blueberries for extra taste yet not overly sweet to the point where you don't want anymore. Easily my favorite part of the meal. My table also had other dishes that we shared. Strawberry french toast was ok. The strawberries tasted fresh and the French toast was good but nothing out of the ordinary. We also tried their crispy potato pancakes with their special house sauce and those were good. The sauce was like a spicy ranch that added a nice kick. Wanted to try this place before they moved to this location. It nice inside, but wasn't to impress with the menu. I got pastrami Reuben with coleslaw. The Pastrami wasn't anything special to me. it came in cubes which was a bit weird. All I could taste was the corn beef and the thousand island could barely be tasted. My coleslaw was so watery that I didn't even try to finish it after my first bite. Overall, service was good, but the food need more work. It's pretty pricy here.
