First time tryer that went on a whim. First point to note is do not trust the online menu, the prices are higher than advertised and it is also more limited than the online menu would have you believe. That said it was a tasty time with yummy appetizers and good beef pot roast. The potatoes are standard fare for mid range restaurants, and obviously were big batch and had no butter or any seasonings to them. Honestly the only high point to my dinner was the meat. Don't forget to ask for butter for the potatoes or extra gravy! It did take a fair bit of time to get our food, but the wait was overall ok as it wasn't too busy. You can tell they prioritize the main floor versus the bar, as we came in at the same time as some nice old ladies who sat in the main room and left 25 minutes after them. Even after ordering, what appeared to be, similar meals. The soda cups are small and not worth the price, don't bother with them. Even with free refills you'll have to hunt down a member of waitstaff to get a timely refill. My partners food was generally alright, but looked much smaller in portion and value than mine for the same price. This leads me to not recommend the pies unless you have a small appetite. I will probably go back, but with a clearer picture of what to get, what not to bother with, and what the cost is versus what the website says it is. read more

Food was good, I got the Grilled Salmon and it had lots of sauce and rice. Service was amazing, everyone was really nice and our waitress had a good sense of humor. I went at early dinner like at 4:00 and the place was pretty much empty which to me was good. The restaurant itself was very clean then again there was basically no one else there. At some point in 2018, Mad Hatter moved from its wee and oft packed space on Main Street to an expansive dining room, complete with a bar and dinner hours, along Washington Street. And thus, Mad Hatter Cafe became Mad Hatter Restaurant and Lounge. Kudos to them for establishing a much deserved following, and carrying what made the spot such a local icon to its new facade, with a notable hat tip to the Breakfast for Dinner section on the standing supper menu. As such, I HAD TO go with the hash and eggs ($12), while wife scanned past traditional Irish entrees for a plate of chicken fingers ($10) and a side of fries (spiral cut spuds). The kiddo went mac and cheese on their tot menu ($7, inc. side and a juice). Tender corned beef needed a little seasoning, but otherwise a bountiful serving good for leftovers. The way overpoached eggs were DOA; bummer. Solid soda bread with Irish butter to round out a decent plate, but not reminiscent of the fine tuned output from their Main Street days. I had to laugh at the plating of the chicken fingers. Artfully lined up on the bias along a rectangular dish, the app features five plain, modestly sized and almost too uniformly shaped cuts of poultry, meaning each was $2. Stand down, soldier, and at least consider coming with a side of fries at that price point. Kiddo's cheesy mac was a hearty portion - he dug it, as any kid eating mac and cheese would. The owner was very involved in the floor happenings, and stopped by to say hello and thanks. Nice touch, but not enough to offset some of the kitchen's growing pains post-expansion. read more

Mondays at Mad Hatter! We just happened to pop in and had a fantastic time with Dave the bartender trying to guess the music playing throughout the place. It was a quick made up game of Name the song/ artist and drink if you didn't get it; Dave could not partake but he didn't need to, he knew the songs:) We got an app of delicious buffalo chicken and for meals; The lobster roll was huge; probably a lb of lobster meat, so tasty! and my SO got the rueben which he gets everywhere, said was good! Stopped in for a quick bite and a couple beers. Sat at the end of the bar. My son and I each got a beer, nice and cold. He ordered a burger medium, I ordered a reuben. Burger was rare to med-rare. Reuben had no swiss cheese. Onion rings were very greasy, kinda chewy. I mentioned the lack of cheese, bartender apologized, offered another. I'd already eaten almost half, and was starving after work and didn't want to wait, so I declined. He took it off the bill, even though I said that's not necessary. I used to visit this place a lot when it was still on Route 18. Their breakfast entrees were really good, and portions were big. Recently, I called to order some takeout at its new location. I wanted to get an order of the chicken curry and the steak tip curry pie. It was a Sunday and the waitstaff who answered said that they only had breakfast buffet in the morning. However, she checked with the kitchen and was able to accommodate my order. That was very nice of them. The chicken curry consisted of chicken breast, peppers, and onions in an Irish curry sauce over rice and fried potato wedges. It was delicious! I definitely prefer the potatoes over the rice. The steak tip curry pie consisted of marinated steak tips with diced potatoes, corn, and peas in an Irish curry sauce inside a pie crust. It came with a side salad. From small place that punched above its weight to... something else entirely. We use to have our kids watch movies in the car, for an hour or more, rain, snow or shine, for what we knew was going to be a great meal. Menu and owner are the same, but, sadly, too much else changed. Have been twice to the new location now. First time whole meal was comp'd, AND offered $50 to return. We refused the money believing they'd figure it out. Trip two 3 months later was some how worse. Even our waitress acknowledged that not only did she hear it from the customers, but that she believed it too. Runny eggs are everywhere, bland potatoes too, the corned beef hash was abysmal, and the pancakes, that were once so perfect, not bad, but different. I have given this restaurant a second try after having difficulty on a prior visit. The owners reach out to me and the issues were resolved. I was more then happy to give them a second chance... and was I ever glad I did! It was busy, but we were seated faster then originally expected. The new place looks amazing but still has that small close knit feel they had in their prior location. I have a gluten allergy and I was super excited to find out they use Gillian's gluten free rolls (which are far superior then any other gluten free product!). I ordered the breakfast burger and it's MASSIVE... and massively delicious! The home fries are cooked and seasoned well with peppers and onions, just like I like them. (They can be ordered plain). Anyone looking for a great breakfast at a reasonable price... Mad Hatters is the place! The owners are amazing people... I can't wait to try their lunch menu! read more

To start: service 11 out of 10. Meaghan was our waitress and she was so friendly, attentive, and funny! She made the experience that much more enjoyable, the Irish accent was an added bonus too. The food was your typical breakfast, good but not memorable. I tried the Ultimate French Toast. Room temperature by the time I ate it, Frosted Flake crust was a bit stale. Tasted just fine otherwise., lite on the cinnamon. My mom had the meat lovers omelette and she enjoyed it but found it to be a bit over cooked. Have gone to their new place multiple times for breakfast pre and post COVID, but finally went there for dinner today, they were doing their Valentine's Day special. Too bad they didn't update their website about the special; I stumbled upon it in their Facebook page after most other places were booked for the night. Too bad, because it was good and the value was equally good. 1 Appetizer, 1 dessert, and 2 Beef Wellingtons for $75. Delicious! Their regular menu apps were even better than the special app, yum! The venue isn't particularly "romantic", but that meal would fit in well at a more upscale place selling at a higher price. We put our name on waitlist shortly after 1 pm, was told by server it would be about 20 mins. We were seated almost 2 pm (by that time, we heavily considered take out) After reading countless of reviews on yelp, we ordered the most rated/reviewed items. Irish Breakfast - enjoyed all the sausages, especially the black pudding one (usually I'm not a fan). I was disappointed with the Irish soda bread (tasted plain/ lacked flavor) and wished they would've toasted/grilled it, otherwise it tasted like regular dense bread with not much flavor. The Hungry Man with french toast - exactly as described, pretty normal dish for brunch places but the french toast was the winner. It tasted delicious, I would order just as a meal itself. Specials Avocado Salmon Benedict (uses the avocado as a base instead of english muffins) - salmon wasn't as salty as normal smoked salmon and the sauce was light/mild in flavoring. Mad Hatter Special (pastry puff wrap, stuffed with homemade corn beef hash inside) - disappointed the corn beef hash lacked flavor/salt, maybe the toppings over powered/masked the beef hash flavor/taste. It was served with some kind of white creamy spicy/jalapeno sauce. *The fruits on the side that came with it tasted weird* Iced Hazelnut Coffee tasted weak and watered down - $2.75 for a cup equivalent to the water cup TIP - BE AWARE to ask questions before ordering! On the menu, it stated ADD strawberries/blueberries/chocolate chips for $1.00 extra. My friend wanted the blueberry french toast (as seen in pictures) but was told that she couldn't substitute for that because that was a special order, so my friend got blueberries on the side. She was charged $2.75 for a tiny take-out sauce size container of wrinkly, non sweet blueberries (few dried ones). Maybe the service and food was limited due to their closing, I'll try earlier next time. Maybe if I do come back, I'll try just their homemade corn beef hash and crunchy french toast or pancakes. read more

A grill diner type restaurant that should be Diners Drive-ins and Dives. Come on Guy and come on regulars! I asked the wait staff and she said no they have not been featured on that show. Breakfast and lunch. Sandwiches such as grilled portobello mushroom panini to Cuban sandwich to lobster roll, soups what else New England chowder. But you come here for the all day breakfast items. I had one of their specials. The pot roast, two eggs, potatoes with the special seasoning and Irish bread. Big portions and the pot roast was out of this world. Slow cooked and tender with a flavorful brown gravy. Fast service. Friendly service. Created immediately. The owner obviously knew I was not a regular or even from Massachusetts, came by to see how I was doing. A+ Walk up window for carry out. Mother's day Brunch 2pm understand we are on the late spectrum of special day brunch. However, we arrived at 2pm and the pancakes and french toast were cold and very dry. Shrimp was not offered as people before as in years before had drained the well dry to get the most for their 40.00 brunch. The carving station was shut down so no beef. The pork was a tough as a line backer but it was 2pm. The desserts were 8 left over brownies which had been picked up by others and put down again. The deviled eggs need a new recipe as they were inedible. Not to be a mean person so The waiter Adam was on his game and the service reflected that. I did beseech the hostess that the offerings are not what we were offered according to the menu. She couldnt help us to save her soul. See your wait staff said she. Adam brought our concerns to the manager. He offered a round of drinks which was sporting of him and two bowls of ice cream for the little ones. We were appeased but not without the chatter at the table being never again will we waste our money here for anything. Helpful hints for owner. You book people at 2pm then filter your food to reflect your promised menu at 2pm. We were not homeless looking for a handout and will take all the food everyone else passed up. We expected a standard of what we had bought into. It is not my resposibility to anticipate gluttonous people before us or that you dont have enough sterno to keep it hot. The bill came with 2 additional adult people and 2 extra children which we are glad we perused the bill closely. Helpful note 2pm people are just as essential as all the other sittings that came before. It is your reputation. We would like to thank you for your consideration to make it right but and we accept it is a busy day and their will always be dissapointments but you are not new at this day and good management would have taken these problems into account. HUGE portions! Great bang for your buck. There were so many eggs on my Bacon Egg & Cheese that I could have used them to make one or two more sandwiches. My mom was given about a half pound of bacon with her meal too Food was a little greasy. We did not care for the home fries, wouldn't get those again. Staff was friendly and helpful. They don't take reservations and there's a good sized crowd on the weekend so be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes for a table inside. Plenty of seating outdoors for while you wait though. There is a little takeout window right by the entrance so you can get your food quickly and skip the line if you'd prefer--this is a great option because you can sit outside and have a much quicker meal if you're not looking to take your time. read more

We had to go in and grab a server. She walked past us once before and ignored us. Ok so she finally comes after we had to ask for one. We for drinks we get coffee and water. She only brings one water for the person who asked. Update to follow, but I hope the food is better than the service. Service isn't horrible but just lacking. The food was good. Went out this morning for Brunch for St Paddy's Day. Had a reservation for 11am. They gave us the breakfast menu. It was a special one for St Patrick's Day but said "breakfast served until 3pm" on the bottom. Waitress gives us the run down and tells us one of the items isn't available. Fine. We order drinks. She doesn't come back to take our order until 11:45. Fine. Sees the menu we have and says "oh we stopped serving breakfast at 11am." What? Why did we get the menu when we arrived at 11 if it was already over? Plus she saw that we had that menu when she took our drink order. Also it says 3pm on the menu. She says "it's just how it is today." She gives us the lunch menu. I am vegetarian and there is not a single vegetarian item (which is why we planned on brunch!). Says she'll go get the manager. Comes back 5 mins later and said "oh he'll make an omelette just for you but that's it." Manager doesn't even have the decency to come talk to us. I said no we are going to leave. Still charged us for drinks. I should have protested but did not. I don't blame the waitress but the manager should have come over. Absolutely ridiculous service. read more

Love this place. Don't live in Boston anymore but this place is now a breakfast staple on every family visit. Charming, friendly, and great food. Great coffee and homemade soda bread. The classic Irish breakfast, blueberry and strawberry French toast, corned beef hash with eggs, and veggie omelet were enjoyed by all. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Usually there is a wait on the weekends but today we only waited 5 minutes. My only critique is that the waitresses are so involved in the kitchen too that their black uniforms have been covered from top to bottom with what appears to be flour and food particles on both occasions I've been. Throwing on an apron when working back of the house I think would be an easy fix. The regulars don't seem to care and it doesn't bother me that much because they are all beautiful but I can see how for some people it could be a bit of a turn off from a sanitary perspective. If they change this practice and have fans/AC in the summer inside, would definitely bump up to a 5 star rating. read more
