I was excited to try them here but was a little underwhelmed. I ordered the Madres Chilaquiles, which is chilaquiles rojos with birria and beans on top. The birria and consome was a little bland I had to add more salt to it, which honestly says a lot because I'm a light salt type of gal. The sauce on chilaquiles tasted familiar like they used pato sauce, which is fine, but if I'm going to a restaurant I would hope they made their own especially for this price. It felt like it was missing something. An egg might have balanced the dish out but it doesn't come with it and you have to pay extra to add. It was dry even after I poured the consome on top. My bf got the lomo saltado chilaquiles. He said it actually was spicy but the steak was not that great. He would not order again for $25. The only part he liked was the chilaquiles. The pistachio waffle had the aesthetic but lacked balance. The waffle itself was pretty sweet but on the drier side for how thick it was and was hard to cut. Ice cream was included but wasn't enough moisture to balance the dryness of the waffle. It could have used more syrup but it would have just made it way too sweet. I love pistachios and was so excited to try this but I was so disappointed with it. We tried the cold brew flight and was not a fan. I couldn't taste any of the cold brew. The foam wasn't that creamy foam texture I enjoy, and the sweetness was too articifial. The only thing I liked was the banana chips on one of them. Server came and I ordered the red chilaquiles with an extra scrambled egg and my husband was stuck between the breakfast sandwich and the Popeye, he chosed the popeye. We also ordered egg and hash brown plate for our kids with added pancakes. For drinks we ordered an iced horchata latte and a regular latte. The presentation of the chilaquiles was very nice However the chilaquiles were very dry and the beans tasted straight like out of the can. My husband plate came with a side of queso panela and as soon as he took a bite he spited it out, the cheese had gone bad and tasted extremely bitter and sour. It smelled funky too, I don't know how the kitchen didn't realize it was expired before sending out the plate. We couldn't get the servers attention so we asked the bus boy if he could call her over and he did and we explained what was going on and to ask for a different plate.Her only response was "I'll tell the manager" took the plate and left. His sandwich came out and the mixed green salad was dark and looked old as if it had been in the cooler for more than a week. At that point we just asked for the check because clearly something is not going right in that kitchen. They are not checking their product for freshness. The server brought the check and told us that $3.50 had been discounted from his sandwich! The manager never stopped by the table to check on us or apologize for the mistake, and I get it mistakes can happen but serving any form of expired dairy can cause food borne illnesses immediately. What if it was a child that ate that cheese? Please do better!!! The only positive from the place were the lattes and the bus boys attention! read more

My husband and I decided to try this spot for brunch today. It was a 25 minute wait, so we got on the waitlist and walked around for a bit. Once our table was ready they gave us a call. We were then seated and had our order taken shortly after. I ordered the Birria Benedict with an Iced Strawberry Horchata, while my husband tried their Madres Chilaquiles with a Horchata Iced Latte. The menu here is pretty unique, and has a lot of interesting choices. I think the food is very good, while my husband thinks it's good but not great. He says the birria is inconsistent, with some of it being satisfyingly tender, but other parts dry and chewy. He also feels it needs more salt and flavor. We both like the composition of the dishes though, and we both think the drinks are delicious. The prices here are high, but the location is in Uptown Whittier, so that's to be expected. On the other hand, the portions are pretty generous, even for a breakfast/brunch spot. Our waitress, Cari, was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The restaurant atmosphere however is a bit lacking. It feels crowded and clinical. They could use more greenery, and just an overhaul on the general vibe to be more homey/authentic. Birthday brunch !! Thanks to my bestest friends for celebrating me! Even though I hate being reminded of how old I'm getting lol. Technically we only have one birth day! The day we were born!! This restaurant was perfect. Easy parking and no lines went we got there, but it definitely was a full house at noon. Great for big groups. Lots of brunch options. Mainly Mexican dishes so I had no idea what to order. I just went with the Avocado toast sampler. 3 half toasts with different toppings. They have an option with two whole toasts with just egg is supposed to be a vegetarian option but I guess you can always add bacon to that. We came in on Sunday after service because it was the closest brunch spot to the church, and we were excited to try it. Unfortunately, we left very disappointed with the quality and taste of the food. The chilaquiles were extremely dry and almost tasted stale, and the chicken was very chewy and unpleasant to eat. The pancakes and French toast were overly sweet--so much sugar that it overpowered any real flavor. I also ordered an iced vanilla latte, and it was not good at all; it tasted like watered-down coffee with barely any vanilla flavor. That being said, the customer service was great. I really hate to give only 2 stars but I can't lie on the experience we had here today. Maybe due to the fact it was a Sunday afternoon - middle of rush hour, but our dining experience left a negative impression and we will not come back. Efforts were made at the end of our brunch by the management and waitress in which we are grateful for, but I left embarrassed. This place was hyped up and I wanted to treat my son-in-law to his first meal of his birthday day. Started off with our drink order. We ordered an horchata latte on ice, cafe de olla, blended abuelita coffee. Drinks were good but we enjoyed them 10 min apart from each other. It took almost 20 min to just get the 1st drink on the table. We stayed patient, finally placed our meal order. Waited another 45 min for the food to come out, which is understandable. Again, we could not experience and enjoy our meals together. We generally like to wait for everyone to get their food before digging in, but we sat there waiting for all 3 plates to come in at different times. 10 min apart. When you're hungry, those 10 min seem like a lifetime and then everyone's food was getting colder by the minute. Usually your whole table's meals come in at the same time- but not today! To top it off the last plate to come in was cool not hot or warm. It was a sad plate of chilaquiles for the birthday boy. Sigh. Very dry even at sight! You can clearly see, it was sitting somewhere else for quite some time. I know my son tried his best to eat the plate, but he was struggling. I was a victim of hyping up this place and was so embarrassed. I had to reach out to the manager to work with me on his plate. I got the Rancheros and my daughter had the pastor omelet. Our plates were ok. The pastor omelet had the best review on the table. My daughter said she wished it had a side. We could have went somewhere local and saved the gas, time and money! I went with the highest hopes that the food was going to be delicious. 4.5 stars is pretty solid. Unfortunately, the whole experience fell incredibly short. I brought my mom and husband after leaving the PIH hospital. (My mom had a small outpatient procedure and I had promised her something yummy to eat after) We arrived, there was no wait, was seated right away. The waiter handed us menus and left. When hw arrived to gwt our drinks order enough time had laps to know that we were ready to order all at once. My husband and mom ordered hot beverages and I ordered an iced cafe de Olla. My husband ordered bacon and eggs, Mom and I ordered Mole chilaquiles. The beverages arrived around the time the meals were arriving. My husband thought his meal was OK. 2 of the 3 slices of bacon were edible as 1 was so fatty and not crispy. As for the 2 mole plates, they were so disappointing. They arrived warm at best, dry, and nothing like I thought it would taste. My mom who was the hungriest, after fasting from her procedure, left more than half. It just lacked flavor and freshness. Definitely not worth the $22 per plate. My iced café de Olla was so watered down, no taste what's so ever. The other beverages were ok. I will say the breakfast potatoes were the best thing on table. The server was no where to be found from just the bare minimum. I had wave him down for salsa, and not once came to check in. Very disappointing. Never will I return again. I've heard many good things about this place, so I decided to try it. It was cold outside as well as inside, I had to wear 2 jackets to stay warm. The place was large divided into three sections with many tables. The girl told us to sit anywhere so we picked a table that seats 4 because I saw another couple do the same. Under her breathe she said it's usually for three or more but it's ok. I pretended not to hear. The place wasn't full so I didn't move, more people came in and didi the same! Time to order we put in our order and she went to make the non refillable cafe de olla, it wasn't what I expected. It wasn't warm and tasted watery with a hint of cinnamon- sad! The meal came and my eggs were cold from sitting on the window too long. No the restaurant wasn't packed maybe 5 tables. I never leave a bad review, so I ordered a meal to go- Thankfully it was perfect. So I'm assuming things were cooler because the place was cold. Maybe if the heater was on, the food won't get so cold??? The place has big windows in the front which brings in the cool air. Hopefully no one else experienced the same. I don't do spice so I always have to modify, well the only modification to my "chilango" chilaquiles was light on the green sauce, these were so good, it's an omelette with the chips inside so the chips weren't just dry like at other restaurants ... Love that they have black beans and they were generous with the cheese... maybe more sour cream on top. Vanilla latte was good. Madres was a bit of mixed bag for me and my friends. The presentation of the food was quite excellent and in general the flavor of the chilaquiles and seafood omelet was pretty solid, there were a few aspects to our meal that were pretty lackluster. Our two biggest complaints were that the "loaded baked potato" that came with some of the dishes looked like a sad boiled potato wiith a smidgeon of toppings on it, and the belgian waffle was dense and not crispy on the outside.  This being said, I personally enjoyed the chilaquiles and the omelet dish. I wouldn't say it was above or beyond, but I definitely cleaned my plate with those two. The coffee selection was also pretty fun! They are sweeter concoctions and highly flavored so it was more of a delicious fun coffee beverage as opposed to finer high quality beans but I feel thats totally acceptable for the type of establishment they are.  Overall, there are some solid aspects to the food here and there are some fun elements to the cocktails and preparations, with some relatively big flavor caveats to me. I personally enjoyed it enough to not regret visiting but probably would not go there again. read more

Best experience ever! My husband and I drove from Claremont all the way to the Whittier Madres Brunch for breakfast. It was a well worth trip...the food delicious, the drinks to die for and the atmosphere was great with good music and such hospitality! We order a flight of mimosas that were phenomenal. This rating is a little tough - I didn't have any issues with the food. The birria omelette was juicy and rich, and the Benedict was very solid. However, the staff just wasn't really professional at any point. A lot of the hosts were just on their phones when I tried getting their attention because we needed silverware. We needed silverware because they never gave us any by the time the food came out. It took us multiple efforts to get our servers when a few of the servers were talking and laughing with each other, ignoring us calling them. I understand brunch is more of a slow laid back vibe but I had a flight to catch after and heard really great things about Madres so the entire experience was a little bit of anxiety throughout. This was my first time at a Madre's Brunch and it was FABULOUS. I got the breakfast sandwich and the ingredients were so yummy. My table also got the Manhattan French toast and it was a large portion and also so good! My favorite item was the dulce de leche latte. Aside from the great food, the energy of the restaurant was so cute. Colorful walls, good service, and roomy for how busy it was for brunch at noon on a Saturday. I live in Monrovia and will definitely be trying that location soon! read more

Chilaquiles! It's been awhile since I've gone out for breakfast/brunch and this place is so cute! We got there around 10:30am right before the crowd! And the service there was great and they always checked in on us to make sure everything was good and if we needed anything else. We ordered the chilaquiles and the Rojos with birria was very good. And very filling, was only able to finish half of it before being full. The Verdes with steak was also good but we had to add some hot sauce and then it was better!
