My wife and I visited for a weekday brunch during a break from work, hoping to beat the weekend rush after seeing the photos and strong online reviews. The restaurant itself had a pleasant ambiance and appeared well-staffed, which made the experience that followed even more surprising. Despite there being only a few other parties dining, it took roughly 15 minutes just to receive coffee and water--and only after we asked twice. Several staff members were gathered at the front chatting, which made the delay feel less like a staffing issue and more like a lack of urgency. When the coffee finally arrived, it unfortunately tasted burnt. Taking our order took another 10 minutes. I ordered the sampler toast, and my wife chose the Birria Benedict. After that, we waited close to 30 minutes while guests who arrived after us were served promptly. We checked in twice for updates and were told someone would "check on it." When the food arrived, the execution was inconsistent. My eggs--ordered over easy--were all cooked differently, though to their credit, the server quickly brought out replacement eggs. The salmon, however, was overcooked to the point of being dry and jerky-like. The birria was the standout item, but the rest of my wife's dish didn't taste particularly fresh. Hoping to salvage the experience, we decided to order a plain waffle--thinking perhaps it was a specialty. Unfortunately, while we watched other dishes leave the kitchen within 15-20 minutes, the waffle never arrived. During this time, smoke began filling the restaurant from the kitchen, which didn't inspire confidence. We ultimately asked for the check. When it arrived, I asked about the missing waffle and was asked if I had placed the order with another server (I had not). The server offered to get a manager, but after nearly two hours in the restaurant, we were simply ready to leave. Overall, this was a disappointing experience given the high ratings on Yelp and Google. While every restaurant can have an off day, this visit felt like a series of avoidable missteps. This place was overhyped and overpriced in what world does a restaurant owner justify charging $4 for a can of soda with no refills. Some would say you're paying for the vibe but even their utensils and drink-ware was cheap. Unfortunately it was our first and last time here. I just hope that for the price this place is charging and the quality of everything that the least they can do is pay their employees more than minimum wage. This place was not great. Surprised by how many start it has. Did not take pictures of the other items but we ordered the red chilaquiles, egg Benedict's and the waffles. As you can see the waffle would separate and fall apart the taste was not fair. It seemed more like powder taste. Did she like did not taste like Chilaquiles? They were really red, but there was no red sauce taste to it seems like they added a lot of cumin to it and that's what I was able to taste the most. The egg Benedict were OK. The chorizo tasted more like sausage and I feel like the combination of the cheese and sauce. They used did not complement well. Our office selected Madres Brunch for our monthly outing and I was not disappointed. Located in the heart of uptown Whittier and right next to the Whittier Village Cinemas, Madres offers a variety of yummy breakfast and savory lunch entrees made with fresh ingredients and an eye for presentation. Vegan options are also available which suited our team just fine. We were a large group of about 13 adults and were seated quickly. We arrived around 11am on a weekday which is a good time. I noticed that the lunch crowd starting arriving around noon and filled the place up. I ordered the salmon toast which came on a thicker type of bread similar to Texas toast but much softer. The avocado added a nice base as did the onion. This is quite the popular restaurant which is no surprise when you take into account the excellent service, small town location, and delicious food. This is a perfect place to take out of town guests looking to enjoy Whittier. Free parking available behind the restaurant/movie theater in the public parking lot. The food is absolutely great ! I got the "Chilango" omelette. My husband got the "Madres chilaquiles " and they too were great! They are a tad bit spiced than the regular red chilaquiles. My husband and I went here for brunch. They have huge portion sizes so we decided to share a savory and a sweet entree. The service was standard it was pretty busy when we came in but we were seated right away. Definitely has a more modern feel. The Los Cubanos was good and the pork chops were cooked juicy and not dry. The hazel which is two waffles with a LOT of hazelnut spread could be dialed back a little. At some point all we could tastes is just the gooey spread and not the waffle. I would ask for the spread to go on the side next time. All in all it's an okay spot to eat. Now the food... can I say, the Churro French Toast has to be one of the top French toasts I've ever had. It almost had a cinnamon roll type taste, but the churro pieces made it a MUST GET for the next time I come. The chilaquiles verdes w/ birria were also really good. It was definitely enough for my wife and I to share. Lastly, the iced pistachio latte... let me tell you... I could've ordered least 3 of these things. Highly recommend! Madres Brunch is a large restaurant in downtown Whittier. There is lots of street and structure parking in the area. I highly recommend joining the wait list via yelp. The menu is brunch oriented with lots of Mexican leaning dishes. They also have sparkling wine and what I believe to be wine based margaritas (they don't offer hard alcohol separately). We ordered a flight of mimosas with orange and pineapple juice, all of which were delicious. My chilaquiles verdes were also outstanding - rich and fresh. The service is not super attentive, but they are always hustling. All of the tables are full and I think that they are a bit short staffed. They help as they can. Great place for a trendy brunch spot! Their customer service is excellent! Super kind people working at this location. They have 3 door however, the main entrance is the one in the middle. It's apparent that there is a worker/host that will come out to greet you and seat you. You must wait outside/make a line and they'll call you up on a first come first serve basis. They have a bench to sit on, but it's limited to like 4-5 people to sit on. I went on a Sunday around 945am ish and there was no host for a good 3-5 minutes so we did have to wait a bit. I ended up asking the worker there if we come and look for someone or if someone will come out to get us? He said someone would come out and sit us down. Eventually we got sat down. The server greeted us within 5 minutes of us sitting down. We ordered drinks first and got them within 5-7 minutes. We then ordered our food and got that within 10-15 minutes after ordering it. I always get water and their water cup is super small/like a kids cup. So maybe get the bottle if you drink a lot of water. I got the waffles and I'd rate them a 7/10. The waffles were dry :( but the strawberries and bananas were fresh and delicious! The Nutella wasn't overpowering and the ice cream was just the right amount. My favorite iced coffee is their pistachio latte ! Highly recommend it ! Parking out front is limited so you may need to walk a ways or park in the back area and walk down the mini alleyway here. I'd definitely come back and try more menu items. Also, their Yelp reservations does not work here, I do not recommend you try it or rely on it. We visited Madres in Whittier for our Autism Moms Mother's Day brunch, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. The service was extremely slow from start to finish. It took a long time for our order to be taken, the food took even longer to arrive, and throughout the meal no one checked on our table or offered refills. The biggest issue was the food itself. I ordered pozole from their Mother's Day menu, but what was served was clearly birria consommé with hominy, not pozole. As someone from Guadalajara, I know the difference in flavor and preparation. When I brought it up to our server, he admitted they had been debating whether to make pozole that day because it normally does not sell well, and mentioned they may have mixed the two due to not having enough prepared. That was very frustrating because if an item is unavailable, it should simply be communicated to customers rather than serving a completely different dish. I was genuinely looking forward to pozole, and the meal did not reflect what was advertised on the menu. Traditional pozole is typically prepared with pork, while what I received was clearly beef birria consommé with hominy added. In addition to the food issues, several staff members were unprofessional and unfriendly during our visit. To make matters worse, gratuity was still added despite the poor service and after I had already tipped the cook, who was the only person who made an effort to help us. Overall, the experience was disappointing, especially for a special Mother's Day gathering. I would not recommend this restaurant based on our visit. read more

This is a great breakfast spot especially if you have a sweet tooth! During this visit, I tried the green chilaquiles with steak and shared a pistachio waffle. Both were delicious especially with an Abuelita (chocolate) latte. The service is great here and our server (I apologize for forgetting her name) was very pleasant. The food is delicious. I got the Chilequiles Verde and it is a star dish. A bit too much tortilla chips but that is just me. Steak topped and very good. The green salsa is obviously in-house and the chopped onions were freshly cut and good as well. The bed of beans on the plate was perfectly seasoned and just enough to be hearty but not too filling. I got a single pancake as a side and it was fluffy and well seasoned too. I ordered a cortado and it was beautiful and very good as well. Now. My only criticism for this 2nd time here is the wait. The service staff are very nice, very attentive, but it would help for this place to get a bar to seat parties under 2 quicker. Waited almost an hour to be seated when initially quoted a 20-30min wait time. I saw at least 2 other waiting parties just leave due to the wait. If they get that under control this place will have a long local life for sure. Happy to eat here again, just work on that wait time. read more

The strawberry did not pair well with the viscous spread of evaporated milk on top of the manhattan french toast that gave it a sour unpalatable aftertaste. The chilaquiles were soggy and the chips tasted stale. It was also very salty. the pancakes were chewy and bland. all i wanted were regular pancakes. in my opinion, IHOP makes better pancakes. VALUE AND PRICE: It was super expensive yet situated right next to an IHOP down the block for a cheaper more economical price and better taste. Not worth it. SERVICE: It was super loud.
