The cafe was very busy when we arrived but the staff were friendly. We bought a pumpkin cake (which was absolutely delicious!) and waited about 20 minutes to be seated on a Saturday afternoon which isn't bad! Once seated the waiter was prompt. I ordered the veggie burger meal and it was delicious. I also ordered a double americano but what I received wasn't what I was expecting. There was no crema and the waiter seemed annoyed when I asked about milk alternatives. Although its business hours are 8:00am~4:00pm, my wife, daughter and I arrived 2:30pm and was told a table is been set up for us, 3 min later, a lady came up said they could not seat us because the chef are not taking any food orders. FABULOUS. Simply put. On vacation with my husband and we found this quaint cafe with great breakfast and a bounty of baked goods. The pecan rolls look like they were prepared for the gods. We've been here three times this week... He loved the lobster Benedict. Omelettes are delicious and a good portion size. Prices are in the $7-$10 range which to some is pricey but being from Phoenix this is reasonable to us. Love their baked goods! I am not a fan of frosting (and haven't been since I was a little kid) and this is the one place that I'll eat their frosting rather than knocking it off a cupcake. This little cafe & bakery has delicious food! I had the French toast it was lightly and fluffy, made with cinnamon swirl bread but not too sweet. My husband had the Destroyer omelette which came with hash browns and toast. It was a big size and he couldn't finish it. We had a side of bacon which was thick and crunchy - yummy. But the favorite and their speciality is a warm pecan cinnamon bun . It was amazing! The service was also great. Atmosphere was warm and cozy. What an odd experience...food wasn't terrible and all the servers around us seemed competent, but ours forgot about us and it took 30 minutes and a few trips inside to get them out to take our order. No check in during the meal and no bill delivered, had to chase one down inside. To begin, we are locals and come to Mae's several times a month. It is our go to spot for consistently good food. We stopped in on Sunday for breakfast as we do quite frequently. However, something was off. Lately it seems, each time we visit, we never see the same people twice save for one or two servers. While I understand college students return to school etc. But honestly, it seems like the staff changes weekly which is concerning. In addition, the food has been inconsistent lately. Preparation and quality seem to remain however, timing is not consistent. Recently I have gotten my food lukewarm to downright cold. This past weekend, while I understand it was Labor Day weekend, it took literally forever to get our check. It was crowded but not "line out the door" busy. And, Mae's handles crowds of any size with grace, so I am not sure what the issue was. The thing that bothered me the most actually was when the owner or manager (tall thin blonde) rudely treated a guest at checkout; indicating that it is a hassle and inconvenience to split a check. But that she would do it if that's what it would take to "get you out of here". Again, Mae's has always handled every situation with grace. This includes a fall by an elderly woman exiting the restaurant which resulted in her being taken away by ambulance. The way the staff handled this was what makes me love this place in addition to their consistent food offerings. I sure hope whatever issues are occurring behind the scenes are resolved. I seriously loved this place. Great vibe, beautiful building, lovely artwork throughout the place, awesome food, large and varied menu, and amazing fresh-baked goodies (including plenty of gluten-free and paleo options!) Indoor and outdoor seating available. I had the Ultimate Sandwich (the croissant was seriously killer), and my husband had the lox sandwich (I believe it was called the Stephen James). We stopped here for breakfast after a few days of camping and had what might arguably be our hands-down best breakfast ever. They have their own bakery with delicious pastries and breads. The French toast is made with their homemade cinnamon bread, which is absolutely the BEST I've ever had. They even have gluten-free options with their own incredible gluten-free bread; my wife loved their blackberry and peach infused gluten-free French toast! Such a cute and cozy place for breakfast or brunch! My friend and I had this spot bookmarked and finally went on a day off from work. We loved the interior and felt so at home just entering. The little booths are the best to sit at and the restaurant itself has lots of space. The menu is inexpensive and has a good enough variety for everyone. I'd said for a meal it's about $10 per person.. give or take. The portions are huge though, we couldn't finish everything. I only gave it four stars because my omelette was a tad undercooked but everything else was fine. We cheated and went to the bakery section after our meals, the cupcakes were yummy I just wasn't crazy about the icing. Great spot in Bath, Maine. read more

I think this is a "depends on what you order place" . I was walking up Center St. which becomes a bonus, when I saw Mae's and remembered reading about it on Yelp. So I walked thru the front door and experienced the same thing others have mentioned about not getting immediate attention. A couple came in after me and they waited a few minutes, also. They may not have a dedicated hostess unless very busy. Anyway, I needed water as my beverage since I was shopping and walking during the morning. I had to ask for a second refill...ask for a third refill, getting a response from my server of "yup". Is that even a word? I hear people use it often. It reminds me of little puppies. Since I'm a fool for crab meat I ordered the Crab Meat Melt on slice of toasted white bread. So lump crab meat, slice of tomato, 4 very large rings of purple onion and melted cheese for 12.95 with chips and side of coleslaw and pickle. Lately, raw onions have been on my "do not eat list" so I pulled them off. The bread was too crispy from being toasted so I just ate the cm and cheese. Overall, I would rate this item a 3 since the cm was whole lump...the ambiance of this location was nice and calming too. I would suggest passing on this menu item. I would suggest to the owner to use a whole small red/purple onion and slice it on a mandolin slicer on thin setting and top crab melt with small amount of this style of onion instead of the thick-can't bite into-pulls everything apart onion they now use or remove it entirely from the menu. Anyway, with only 2 tables occupied my server placed a completed cc transaction tray on my table...it was actually the 2 ladies that were sitting adjoining me that should have gotten it...so I told her. I think the local folks that work in these cafes/shops in Bath begin to suffer from tourist overload mentality. Tourism keeps Bath alive like so many other Historic Towns. Make sure you provide your kitchen preps protective gloves when using the mandolin slicer. Not "meh" just 2 star. read more

I love that it's local and I love how cute it is. I have been for breakfast several times and while there is always a wait the food it's not bad. The breakfast is a solid 4 stars. However, I placed a cake order recently thinking it would be of the same quality. Sadly, disappointed. The cake was decorated perfectly, it was a chocolate cake with PB frosting and needed for a birthday. The actual cake was delicious the frosting was terrible. It was extremely waxy and had no flavor other than shortening. We had to scrape the frosting off in order to eat the cake chocolate cake. I had also purchase a vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting for a non PB fan. It was the same thing- waxy frosting tasting of nothing more than crisco. The cupcake went un- eaten. Most of a $31 dollar cake went into the garbage as well. I really hope I purchased cakes on a bad day but I wanted to warn others before buying for a special event SAMPLE the cake before you buy. read more

Yelp wants me to write a review but here's the thing. I haven't eaten here for years. But what I do come for is Bakery items. They have the best key lime pie I have ever had and that includes every place I could find in Key West. So when we have company and I don't have time to bake it's over to Maes for key lime pie. I've got another pies here as well and cinnamon buns and other things and they make muffins - they are all excellent. I'm sure that their breakfasts are good and we have friends that love the place but when we're home we usually do breakfast at home. And I gravitate to the working man funky little places. That's what I wanted but when I asked about bread choices I was told "nope-it only comes on white" It's a bakery cafe and I can get a sandwich on wheat? or rye? After being told this so rudely by the waitress I said I no longer wanted that because I don't like white bread. I had to take some time to figure out what else I wanted and finally ordered a side of Oven roasted sweet potatoes. They were over cooked and spicy served on a tiny plate for $495. I ate about 2 bites then pushed my plate aside. The waitress never asked if it was ok and by then I was so fed up I just gave up. The waitress was rude throughout. The place was very busy and I had no problem waiting for a table or waiting to order once we were seated but I do have a problem with a rude waitress. No visible management to complain to. I'm originally from Texas - I'm not sure I would have called it jalepeno cornbread- but it was tasty. The home fries were great. The crab cakes were not so good. They had SO much seasoning you couldn't taste the crab. I'm all about seasoning... But don't hide the taste of the crab. The staff was great... The atmosphere was excellent - 5 stars for that. I'll give this place a 3.5 since it was the first lobster benedict I've ever had. We had a post wedding brunch here for a wedding party we attended the following Sunday morning with family and friends. So I ordered the lobster benedict, husband ordered the crab benedict and we split the corn beef hash. The best thing was probably the hash. In my personal opinion the yolk and hollandaise sauce are HUGE for the benedict. I like the yolk to be plentiful and runny meaning it's not overcooked and congealed. Our yolks weren't really consistent in runniness, if there's such a word, and the hollandaise sauce was really different. It was really creamy and not too much taste was involved. The orange juice was delicious though, and the service was great too, even for the girl who had to handle the big party on her first day. read more

I agree with a previous poster that it was a bit awkward waiting for someone to seat me in the beginning. We liked this place enough to visit two days in a row! And I can say without a doubt that if we lived nearby, we'd be regulars. The menu is extensive and impressive, and I'd say fairly priced. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and kind to our sons (even have coloring sheets, crayons and table puzzles available! LOVE that!). I tried a special one day, and a regular menu item the next. Both were scrumptious. Our whole family was thrilled with their choices, and we have since discussed which delicious item we want to try when we get to return (probably won't be for months!). I had the tuna melt; I'm a vegetarian and allergic to shellfish, so my options are limited. I bit into it and all I tasted was tuna and a tiny bit of mayonnaise - so, dry and pretty tasteless. I had a few bites more and that was it.We were a large, fun, talkative group, and the waitress didn't hover, so I didn't return it or complain at the table. When I paid at the counter, however, I reported on its, uh, lack of appeal, and the person did not offer to comp it or offer any kind of regret. Later I called to talk to the manager, but got the same person, who argued about exactly how I should have handled it. Apparently there is a very specific method in the (nonexistent) rule book, and I didn't follow it, so screw me. If you don't like what you got, good luck to you. read more

They forgot our party of 6, crossed us off the list, sat us 15 minutes after the mistake was discovered (by the way, never once did they approach or even take notice of 6 people standing in their lobby just waiting), then they sat us at an isolated table and left us there for another 10 minutes without a waitress. We placed our order 1 hour and 10 minutes after arriving. The crowning moment was when the waitress told us "We can't make alterations to menu items on Sundays because the kitchen gets a little (insert crazy face here)" We should have just left. Update:. In fairness, my meal was quite good. I had the Charlie's Benedict with the Hash, and I'd recommend them both. But two others in our party had pancakes which were under cooked. I had Mae's do the catering for my wedding on August 11 and they went above and beyond! We had them do the cocktail hour, dinner, bar, and cake cutting and it could not have gone smoother.
