Mae's Café has been around for many years with different owners. It always has such an inviting and homey feel. The dining areas are bright and welcoming. We went recently for breakfast. We were greeted by a friendly server The menu was diverse, and all the dishes seemed well curated. They serve local coffee! I had the generously portioned sweet potato and scrambled egg bowl. My husband ordered corned beef eggs Benedict with home fries. It was unfortunate that his home fries were cold and rather dried up. The server offered to bring out fresh home fries. then the front of the house manager brought our bill and discounted the tab greatly. He was very apologetic. We definitely would go back based on this customer service. Worth mentioning, there is a side entrance that is handicap accessible (the main entrance on Centre Street has steps leading up to it). But if one wanted to go to the bakery counter from that entrance, there are a few steps to get to that level. read more

Fabulous food and fabulous service! We had a large party and small kids - not an easy group - but everyone had a marvelous time!

Mae's is fantastic! Their breakfast is great and has a ton of options. The oatmeal whoopie pie and sticky buns are the best ever!

Bath has quite a few breakfast options, and it was hard to choose, but we are so glad we gave Mae's a try! We were seated quickly, and the server was attentive and friendly. Our beverages were there in no time flat. I ordered the avocado toast. WOW! Excellent decision! Perfect slices of avocado and tomato on toast, served with two eggs and the freshest, most beautiful fruit cup! Delicious! My son ordered the breakfast burrito with no onions, and although it did arrive with onions, he was successful in removing them. He said it was very good. Mae's is definitely a staple in the area! Conveniently located just off of RT.1 but far enough into town to give you the flavor of Bath, the restaurant also has all the charm of a historical building with the updates of modern comfort. The staff are all very friendly and happy to answer questions. Even on a busy day (we visited on Fathers Day), service was prompt. Once we placed our order, it took about 45 minutes to get our food, which is long, even for the holiday. It was all pretty tasty, but the home fires were all burnt and the pancakes were not super warm, so I am guessing that some cook forgot to make something. Overall, still very enjoyable, but not perfect on this trip. read more

We came on a Sunday for brunch and were able to get seated right away on their porch by their kind hostess. Since we were outside, I did not get to see how large their indoor space was but it was very homey from what I could see. They had a delicious french toast made from their homemade cinnamon bread and perfectly cooked the eggs whether it was over easy or poached. The home fries were a little overcooked for my likings but they did have a touch of cajun seasoning on top. However, I found my Salmon Benedict to be too salty given it was smoked and paired with a feta smear. The green bowl included thinly sliced greens like broccoli and brussel sprouts that were cooked to my slightly crisp preferences. Overall, we had a good experience. Our waitress was so kind and personable but I do have to give a warning for the bees that can be quite relentless. Food was good and prices were reasonable so I would like to come again! read more

We visit Mae's annually during our trip to Maine. This visit they were especially accommodating of one of our dietary restrictions. All of the benedict options we wanted were appealing and we wanted to share 2 different ones while accommodating a gluten and dairy allergy. We were able to request 2 different benedicts deconstructed so we could split them and everyone was happy. They really made it work! Both the corned beef and short rib benedicts were delicious! I have been wanting to try Mae's. The location has tons of memories-like from the 90s! We stopped in today and it was amazing. I had an eggs Benedict-surprise! And it was soooo good - interesting that there appeared to be cheese under the ham - yum. The hollandaise was light, just right. Wayne went for corned beef - and proclaimed it awesome. We absolutely loved Mae's cafe. The food was great but even better were the servers. Donna was our server the first day we visited and she was amazing! Very attentive. Our second visit we had Michelle and she was just as amazing. There may have been a little fun banter with the two of them and my husband. We enjoyed our food both visits. I've wanted to visit Mae's for a while but they've been closed the couple of times I stopped by, previously. Yesterday was the day. The outdoor porch seating is lovely. I picked a corner table. Our steak and mushroom omelets were fine but nothing "special" per se. The sourdough was good. I really enjoyed the homefries. They were out of corned beef hash - the main reason we stopped in - chicken sausage and squash. Our waiter was proficient but not really friendly. Went into Mae's Cafe & Bakery and the service here was assuming that I wanted go instead of letting me order to sit and enjoy. I stayed back to enjoy a cinnamon bun and vanilla latte. The vibe here was calm. The vanilla latte was more like a vanilla cappuccino. It was really delicious. The male who made my drink had so much foam in it. Lattes have more milk than foam. read more

Way overpriced for the quality of food. $18 for breakfast burrito with hardly any black beans in it and the hasbrowns were burnt, half of them tiny little burnt pieces, and you hardly get any. Everytime I've been in there the last year, they rush you! Wanted to take my order before I'd hardly looked at the menu. Asked us if we wanted desert when we were clearly not done eating. Restaurants cannot urge you to leave just because they "close" at a certain time. We walked in at 1:30, they close at 2. You can't rush a customer out. What close at 2 means is that you serve customers before 2. So not worth the money. They probably think they can get away with it because of their location. I'd rather go to the Galley. read more

There are several awesome things about this place--the "pastrami" salmon Benedict with chèvre was a perfect balance of rich and tangy salty savory. The home fries were perfect. But then the espresso tasted like it was scorched or had rancid oils from having the steam cup left dirty. And one of our espressos was so weak, we returned it for a do-over. Finally, the Brussels sprout hash just tasted like barely cooked bland shredded Brussels sprouts. What a disappointment Mae's Cafe was today. Their menu has been streamlined for the Fall which is understandable. However, that should translate to the food being prepared to a high standard if there are only a few items on the menu. I ordered the Morse's Mountain which consisted of two eggs, home fries, bacon or sausage and two small pancakes. Unfortunately my eggs were rubbery and seemed to have been prepared well in advance as did the home fries. The home fries where very dry inside because the were warmed again and dried out. The pancakes were chocolate chip and after a bite it was very off putting as the chocolate was burnt. I turned them over to see them burned over the entire bottom of both pancakes. I did ask that they bring me two new pancakes and they accommodated that quickly. The new pancakes were very good which tells me that they didn't care how they served the food in the first place. They knew they were burnt. I won't give up on this place but will definitely not order scrambled eggs and home fries again. I will try another item next time. A big let down today! read more

Always a favorite, but this time they outdid themselves. A surprise birthday party for my wife with 9 guests. She knew we were going to Maes for brunch/lunch. We drove up and she got her first clue when she saw a banner outside with her high school photo and "Happy Birthday". The second clue was when we walked into the room and everyone began singing. The service was attentive, the reserved front room was ready, the food was delicious and the cake--a lemon raspberry layer cake with buttercream icing-- was beautiful and tasty. We went to Mae's this morning. I was excited they took reservations and really looked forward to having breakfast w/o a 30 to 45-minute wait. We arrived a bit early and were promptly seated in a private dining area. I think we were the first patrons as they opened at 8 and it was a few minutes after when we arrived. From here nothing was really "prompt". The drinks were brought out within a reasonable time, but everything else took a long time. Our food took almost 30 minutes to come to the table, maybe a bit longer. And we had to flag the waitress down for coffee refills beforehand. Once the food was delivered we asked for butter and syrup - we finally gave my mother ours because her food was getting cold. I ordered oatmeal with apricots/blueberries/cinnamon and asked them to hold the nuts. Instead, I got apricots and literally no flavor in the oatmeal; it was so bland. I was told the menu is confusing and it's blueberries or apricots... I asked her to at least bring some cinnamon but it couldn't help it - that stuff was just bad. Luckily the french toast was delicious and a large helping so my family shared it with me. I asked for the checks right after the food was brought as we were beginning to run behind schedule given how long everything was taking. It again took forever for her to come back to get the checks - I finally walked up and found her. I wouldn't go back - slow service just grates on my last nerve, but the French toast may be worth the wait if you did go. Just stay far away from the oatmeal. read more

I have nothing but positive things to say about this place. I went for breakfast at this sit down cafe, and was not disappointed. First, the vibe. Very Maine, very comforting. I sat in a corner booth with real cushions and it was so cozy. Second, the staff. Very friendly and personable. Never had to ask for a refill on my coffee. Even helped me decide on my meal. And with that, the third, food. I got the sagadahoc bennie that came with home fries. Not your typical home fries. Nice spice to them, not overcooked. The bennie was so flavorful. Great brunch at Mae's! Had the ham Benedict. Hollandaise was perfect! Bright, fresh, and delicious! Poached yolks were over cooked, but I forgot to ask for them gooey. Unfortunately, after making reservations and being seated promptly, our order took 45 minutes to get because the waitress said a catering order had come in which evidently took precedence over the seated and waiting customers. I should add, it was not busy. My daughter's Benedict was good but if you order the Brussels sprouts bacon and egg hash, note there are no potatoes as is traditional in a hash dish. So, for 16 dollars you get 2 eggs, a piece of toast, and shredded Brussels sprouts with probably 1 piece of cut up bacon. We will not be returning. read more
