There's something really special about Mae's Dining Room--a quaint, cozy spot that might get overshadowed by nearby Nemacolin, but it definitely has legs to stand on. We stopped in on a rainy evening, and the hot tea and dessert were the absolute highlights--comforting, warm, and exactly what we needed. The atmosphere is clean, welcoming, and clearly run by a team that cares. The hostess and staff were thoughtful, checking in just the right amount, and our server was attentive and kind. The food overall has potential, but a few dishes could use a little boost: The French onion soup was just okay--not bad, but not memorable either. The starter salad and seafood pasta were both fine, but didn't quite hit the mark. A small but impactful fix? Serve the bread warm--it would make a big difference. That said, the bones are there. The team is working hard, and you can tell they have the right ideas. With a few tweaks to the menu, this place could really shine. I truly hope Mae's sticks around and continues to grow--it's a lovely little gem with a lot of heart. read more

Stopped here for dinner on a Saturday. We come this way from time to time, but had never stopped here. Cool resort - rebranded and designed to match the Frank Lloyd Wright decor and layout. We made reservations for 7:30PM. Took a little longer than usual to get addressed after being seated but we put in an order sharing the Caesar salad and French onion soup to start. Salad was good - soup was good as well. For my meal I ordered the crab cakes which are billed as their signature dish. I is served with mashed potatoes and grilled mixed veg. Crab cakes were respectable - but somewhat on the smaller side. For dessert, I ordered the cheesecake which was good. Our server was very nice, though I can't recall her name. The Mother's Day buffet was very disappointing. Not sure if they have a different restaurant crew this season but the food was not edible. At $62.95 per person the expectation was a quality meal prepared correctly. What we had was dried out overcooked salmon and chicken piccata, mushy vegetables and overcooked lasagna, soggy Cesar salad and strawberry pie where the insides floated on the plate only gooey red syrup with a few strawberries. The crab cakes were good as well as Mae's salad, however 2 edible items on the entire buffet disgraceful. Do not recommend. We have been coming to this area seasonally for decades and this was such a turnoff we will not be back. read more

After reading other reviews, I think it's important to list some info here as well as a review. -Mae's dining room is located within the Historic Summit Inn Hotel. Park in the lot, and walk toward the front door.. you can't miss it! This is a very historic hotel, yes there are stone buildings in the back but just head toward the main entrance. -Only open during the summer months, due to road conditions on the mountain. -The Summit is a short drive from the interstate if you are traveling through, and is certainly worth the short trek up the mountain. -Mae's has a candlelit indoor dining room, as well as outdoor seating on their veranda. The outdoor seating is covered, and if you're lucky you will catch a summer sunset which is completely breathtaking! The menu is same for both the indoor, and the outdoor spaces. -Open to the public, you don't have to be a guest! -live music on Friday! Ok, review! I worked at Mae's when I graduated high school. The summer that I worked here I got to know my way around the kitchen, and also was really inspired by the high quality food that was served. Fast forward 15 years later, I still love coming here! Mae's serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - all are excellent! The menu doesn't seem to change much, I think they have their menu selection really nicely planned and there is something for just about everyone here. This past weekend, my husband and I stayed at the Summit for our anniversary. I can't tell you how nice it is to stay somewhere that has such a nice restaurant, you feel like you're much further away from home than you actually are when you get to experience something like that! Breakfast, and dinner were fantastic. We sat outside for both, and even if I wasn't staying I can't tell you enough to check this place out. The calamari is always 5 star, my husband tried the prime rib, and I had the salmon. Everything was fantastic, and cooked to perfection. To finish, we had the blackberry cobbler which was homemade... oh, did I mention that we got to overlook the most beautiful backdrop too? This place is spectacular. All around wonderful! read more

I ordered the prime rib special and my wife ordered the ribeye. They were $35 and $45 respectively. Both were horrible. I understand prime rib can have fat, but this was about 40% solid fat. The ribeye had so much fat that it was mostly inedible. The dinner rolls were cardboard. I asked the waitress if they could bring out fresher rolls, and they were exactly the same. We had two very nice meals here while staying at the Historic Summit Inn. On our first night we started with the zucchini planks--they were very good and the horseradish dipping sauce was out of this world fantastic. I had the Salmon for my main dish. I asked for it medium rare, though it came out more like medium well. Still it was tasty and I enjoyed it. My husband had Chicken Fragelica--I had a bite and it was very good, moist and tender. On our second night, we both had salads. I had the Caesar Salad with chicken. It was good but too much dressing for me. Hint: get the dressing on the side. Tommy had the Mae's Salad with chicken and said it was very good. Our service both nights was attentive, and the atmosphere was great. Not bad but not great dinner at Mae's. My cocktail was great. Bread a little boring with a spread which didn't seem like butter. Overall, menu was limited. Not many options for a light meal. Why so much seafood in the mountains of PA who knows. However my husband enjoyed his oysters rockafella. My mushroom ravioli was good just not to my taste. Nice selections of desserts. Now here is where Mae's lost points with me....we did opt to eat inside but had no idea we'd have to eat in a windowless poorly lit room. The doors to the windowed space were shut and curtained. Apparently that section was closed because if it rained the veranda people needed to go there....i do sorta understand that. Mae's is just dark, unappealing and frankly depressing. I almost didn't want to go in. Living in New England I've dined in many historic inns and 1600 taverns none were this blah. Nice comfortable furniture but it ends there. While our one night stay at the Historic Summit Inn was wonderful, our dinner at Mae's was not. Located inside the hotel we were excited to not have to go anywhere for dinner. After a couple of drinks in the bar we were seated at Mae's. Cute inside and our waitress was lovely. We started with salads which were good. Husband had the ribeye with rice and vegetables and I had the filet with a crab cake. We agreed we've never had a worse meal in our lives. And we've traveled everywhere. My filet was covered in a dark lukewarm sauce that was so over-salted as to make it inedible. The meat itself was obviously a cheaper cut and that too was way over seasoned and over cooked. With that came an ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes and a medley of what appeared to be roasted vegetables. I recognized one broccoli floret and couldn't tell you what the rest was. Also over seasoned and way over cooked. The crab cake was the size of a silver dollar and wasn't bad. Husband had the ribeye with rice and the same disaster vegetables and his steak was also over seasoned and over cooked. He plowed through because we'd been drinking and he was ready to eat the a$$ out of a skunk. I managed the crab cake and that was about it. We were honest with the waitress and she said she'd tell the manager. Sadly one never came by or attempted to right this travesty. Her last comment was 'do you want a discount or something?' I think she was so shocked she didn't know what else to say. We ended up paying $120 for a good salad. Come stay at this wonderful hotel and see Mallory in the bar. VERY disappointed with the food quality at Mae's. I should have known better after reading the prior reviews, but I was lured into making a reservation while staying at the Summit Inn and hearing about watching the sunset while sitting outside on the beautiful porch. We were one of the only couples eating, but the service was very slow. Every other table was given a bread basket, but we were not offered one. Both our entrees came out incredibly fast, like they were just sitting on a hot plate in the back or something. The food tasted like cheap catered wedding food, pre-plated and incredibly salty. I doubt anything used fresh or local ingredients. Entrees were pretty pricey for the area. I was frustrated with myself for spending money on such a poor experience and hope I can save other travelers an unfortunate experience. read more

Rolls were doughy and undercooked. Shrimp was bland, I asked for zucchini noodles and got angle hair pasta. Pasta was watery not hot. Side dish Vegas were well cooked and rice pilaf was meh. I would not come back for dinner. read more

One star for delightful sever. Food was inedible and flavorless. We literally walked away from our meal with full plates. Food comes out of the kitchen within minutes of ordering leading us to question how anything could be "prepared" or cooked. We ate breakfast here two days while staying at the Summit Inn & Resort. Day one, had two eggs over easy with home fries and toast. Day two had the spinach omelet. There is nothing fancy or different about their breakfast menu, pretty boring indeed. The omelet had NO FLAVOR at all, even salt and pepper didn't help this tasteless breakfast. The best part was the blackberry Smuckers jam in the little containers that I had on my english muffin. Remember to say, not butter on the bread or muffin or you will end up with bread soaked in butter, not for my taste. read more

We stayed at the Summit Inn and ate two breakfasts and one dinner there. The breakfasts were both fine - food was decent and service was good. Dinner was less satisfying, however. The service was very poor - we were seated for nearly 15 minutes before someone even acknowledged us, and it continued to be just as slow from there. The food was mediocre for the price - it seemed we were paying more for the ambiance of eating on the veranda than for the food itself. They also either messed up my drink order or need to be more explicit on their menu - I ordered a Nutty Irishman (the cocktail) and received coffee with Bailey's and Frangelico. The menu did not say their version included coffee. While we had a nice time at the Summit Inn, we would not eat at Mae's again for dinner. read more
