Let me reiterate what everyone has said on previous reviews - SOURDOUGH DONUTS. It's a matter of taste, I agree - my boyfriend apparently loves them, but I don't. What I do like is the other things that make up the donut itself - the presentation and art (the donuts look really lovely and appetizing), and how soft and spongy it is on the inside but has a bit of crunch on the outside. Aside from the donuts, the store's interior is a pastel colored dream~ it's very aesthetic! Service is fast and friendly as well. Not a lot of seating on the inside, but the shop is located near a bougie apartment with a courtyard AND a public park so plenty of "outdoor seating" space. read more

Absolutely amazing! It's donut meets sourdough bread meets dessert. So many fun flavors and not your typical donut. It does have more of a "bread" taste than what you'd think of for a traditional donut but I prefer it. Simply delicious! Ordered salted dark chocolate, dirt & worm, s'more, and lemon meringue. Amazing donuts! These donuts have sourdough base and I've never had anything like them. I tried double strawberry, dark chocolate sea salt, and blueberry lime. All of them were delicious and perfectly "not too sweet". The underlying sourdough flavor balances the sweetness of the toppings, even something as rich and decadent as dark chocolate. However, I was a little disappointed with my iced matcha latte. After I ordered, I saw a bottle labeled "matcha" next to the espresso station so it looks like pre-mixed matcha mixture is tossed into the milk of your choice. It didn't have much flavor to it other than milk. The matcha is also a yellow-green color which is usually a sign of lower quality matcha. I'd skip the matcha for now, but maybe their coffee is better. Overall I was very happy with my visit and the staff was so friendly. The interior has a beautiful design that makes you smile when you walk in. I'll definitely be back! read more

Wow what a place! This is the most beautiful donut shop I've been to. The donuts are made from a sourdough starter which gives the donuts a nice chewy texture although you can taste the sourdough a little bit at the end. Wow. I was definitely not expecting this when I first heard of it! When I friend told me about this new doughnut shop opening I expected it to be gimmicky-- more focused on drawing in influencers than serving quality food. I was dead wrong in that regard as this has become one of my favorite doughnut shops in the city! First of all the bakery is just very pleasant to hang out in, offering some seating and an overall pleasant ambience. The staff is especially nice and seem to genuinely enjoy being there. Oh and that they offer free samples on occasion is also great! Now the doughnuts themselves... Well... They are utterly FANTASTIC! These are sourdough doughnuts if I recall so they are a bit more dense in comparison to doughnuts found at say Krispy Kreme. I personally like this denseness as I enjoy the texture more and feel more satisfied afterwards. The Lemon Meringue Pie doughnut is the true standout. Not only is it gorgeous to look at with its pillow of meringue on top, but the taste is stunning as well! The lemon really comes through, and the merignue helps to balance out the flavors so that the tartness doesn't overwhelm the doughnut. Today at Magic Donuts I witnessed the most horrifying and revolting thing I've ever seen at a restaurant. I was sitting outside at one of the tables. Six feet away, another couple was sitting, enjoying their donut and coffee and working on their laptops. A large stream of liquid from above doused the woman, her food, and her laptop, leaving a large pool on the table. It was dog urine from a dog on a patio above the seating. The staff did not seem to help her clean up or offer towels or supplies as she spent 10 minutes wiping her belongings with thin napkins - although she was given a replacement donut. 20 minutes after the incident, just after noon, the couple left, and the table was still soiled with pooled urine, including a yellow-soaked napkin dispenser. At this time, I heard a male staff member laughing about the incident. I am sickened thinking about this incident, the poor woman, and the uncaring staff. Hubs discovered this place while on jury duty. It was jury appreciation week and what a wonderful treat they got. When he told me it was sourdough, I wasn't too keen. As fate would have it, my nail salon, in Potrero Hill, was right near this place so I had to try it. It has the cutest, retro like, diner vibe with a lovely outdoor seating area. For the longest time, a great donut has been lacking in SF. They now have a great donut shop in Magic. You walk in and it's clean and well designed. I had really high hopes for Magic Donuts since it is right down the street from me and I love donuts and coffee. Let me start with the good: Ambiance -- the shop is beautiful and the Potrero Hill location is incredible with easy walking and driving access. The outdoor tables are a nice touch and a great place to sit down with a coffee. Service -- again excellent. I counted 10 employees working there on my second visit and everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. The bad: Food -- good lord the donuts taste terrible. I LOVE donuts and coffee. The drip coffee is serviceable but nothing to write home about. The donuts however are some of the worst I've ever tried. Sourdough is not for everyone, and It's definitely not for me. I think the sourdough taste itself could be salvageable if the donuts weren't trying so hard to be fancy. I tried honey vanilla, s'mores, sea salt dark chocolate, and milk chocolate across two visits hoping I would like something. Unfortunately, none of them hit the spot. I understand that that they are trying hard to justify the prices but the toppings are overwhelming and the frosting/glazes just aren't good. The terrible taste profile is compounded by the weird contrast between the sourdough and the toppings. PLEASE make some normal donuts. I'd be happy paying higher prices for normal donuts and I desperately want to support to support a local business -- make some classics and let's keep this place alive. read more

I got a lemon meringue doughnut and was in awe of how the doughnut itself was light and chewy but had a very subtle crunch to it. I swear it defies physics! The flavors were also unbelievable, with a harmony of marshmallow meringue, tangy lemon curd, and the familiar flavors of a new take on classic glaze doughnut. Got the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, the Cheesecake, and the Lemon Meringue Despite being on the larger side, the donuts were all really light and airy. Nowhere near as dense as expected. Dark Choclate Sea Salt - a decent amount of chocolate on top. Wouldn't mind a little more Cheesecake - I'm not a huge fan of cheesecake, but this was really good. Probably because the cheesecake part wasn't as strong as regular cheesecake Lemon Meringue - the best of the bunch, but watch out for the meringue the size of a child's fist. I wanted to like this place, doughnuts are okay, decor was not bad. Unfortunately, I found the staff to be cold and rude each time, did not greet me or respond to my greeting when I politely said hello, or how are you. Simply ignored me. This happened 2x. I decided to not over think it and gave it a third try with some friends and we received the same rude behavior from the same tall blonde male wearing glasses that made my friends and I feel un-welcomed and unhappy to spend our money here.
