Even when I moved away to Fresno, I always make an appointment once a month to get my nails done before driving up to Fresno. Don't be fooled by the unassuming location. I have anxiety and one of my habits has been biting my nails. Anytime I've come in, I've never felt shamed for my bitten nails, and Mimi does magic whenever I ask for acrylics! I telework so I try to not get super long nails, and I appreciate how thorough Mimi is with them! This is my latest set done, and they're just perfection! The grandmother who does my pedicure is always super sweet too, and she always takes her time with my toes and does awesome work with the spa service too. Definitely my favorite place to go to for nails! Make sure to call ahead of time and make an appointment though as they can get busy with other customers for the best experience. Yesterday was my first horrible experience and I vow not to return EVER. I politely expressed a concern I had about the service I was receiving. Both eyebrows had different shapes and I wasn't sure why. I received the following response: The concern you have about the way I shape your eyebrows are your problem. The way they look now actually looks better than before so I don't know why you are complaining? It wasn't a complaint, I was expressing a concern in the most respectful manner. My co-worker witnessed the entire encounter and agreed she was very rude. When I paid her she did not give me change like she usually does, but walked away and did not receive her tip. I left it on the desk and walked out. Oh there's more... I get home that evening only to find welts on my face from the hot wax. I now have little scabs under my eyebrows because of it! Okay, so with all the crazy controversy surrounding nail shops, I thought I would weigh in with my favorite. Yes, it's in a little strip mall in Chula Vista, yes it's a little rundown and somewhat shabby and no, total bummer that they don't take CC's. HOWEVER, they give the best damn pedis you can get for the money and all done in the "old school" technique of massage and conquer. There are no fancy spa chairs here...there are however a lot of old office chairs which swivel around and which you will hang out in until your pedi is done. The ladies will bring out an old school plastic square with a vibrating attachment which has long stopped vibrating but the water is hot and soapy. Each bucket has a disposable plastic liner (really a plastic bag) so it gets dumped out with the water every time. So here' s the drill....plain pedi, costs about $20 flat. But for that you get a pedicure that will bring tears to your eyes. The little shop is run by a family, Holly is the lead nail tech, her sister, mom and sister-in-law do nails as well as pedis and the elderly aunt does only manis and pedis. They have the requisite sign in sheet for you to fill out but really they know who's next no matter how many girls are in line. So there you are....soaking the old hooves and either Logan (the sister-in-law) or the aunt will come over and begin your transformation. I don't care if there are 10 people in line, when it's your turn, it's your turn and they don't hurry for NOBODY, get it? The best part of any pedicure I have had there is that they dig out my ingrowns...gross I know, but the truth is I can't see that well and my fat stomach gets in the way so I am at the mercy of either my half-blind husband or the ladies at the nail shop. Damn...they don't even flinch when they see some of the ugly feet that come in there! So they trim and trim, scrub your heels with some serious human Ajax mess and then massage your calves all for the cost of what you would pay for a mani at other shops. After they are done with your feet, the wash them very well in the water and then rub your legs down with a hot washcloth...are you kidding me or what? Then they go back and trim your cuticles again, because that's just the way they are. If you want a French manicure on your toes or little designs, well of course you are going to pay a bit more but it's still worth it. The ladies will also stay until every last customer is done, there is no such thing as "We're closing now, it's 7 pm." They will stay until they are done with everyone. Sure, they don't accept CC's and that's inconvenient but there's a drug store next door with an ATM machine. And yeah, their English is pretty limited but they work hard so bring a book or your Game Boy and settle back. I have had pedicures all over town, from low end to high end and these folks are definitely at the very top of my list. They only reason they don't get 5 stars is because they don't do CC's...but what the hell, the pedi is so good I am willing to go to the ATM. Ugh! What is this place?! Ok. Maybe it's because I'm an out-of-towner. Maybe it's because I'm used to the way they do things back in Chicago. I mean, you can take the girl out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the girl, and this tops anything I've seen. Buuuutttt I was in this place for a minute and you can bet I dipped the hell out. So... No massage chairs. You're pretty much just chilling in a $20 office depot desk chair while you sit with your feet in one of those little at-home pedicure trays they sell at Walgreens, full of soapy water and covered with a plastic bag (?!?!). (Dude. If I wanted an at-home pedicure, I'd do it myself.) I'm pretty sure the chair at my desk at work is more comfortable. The polish selection was miniscule too. No credit cards? Bummer, but I didn't bother staying long enough to find out. And honestly, it didn't look any less expensive than any other of the nail salons in the area. Maybe they work some crazy-ass magic while you're in that ugly office chair (I can't imagine why else this place would have such good reviews) and I am missing out on a life-changing experience, but honestly, if I'm going to be paying pretty much the same amount of money, I'm going to go to a place that's a little less straight-outta-Compton. Magic Nails give BEST pedicure hands down! I 100% agree with the previous rater! I will not go anywhere else for a pedicure! It's only $18.00 and the callus removal, massage, etc. is included in the price! I hate it when you to other place and they charge you for each extra thing and you leave feeling like they just washed your feet only! Not at Magic Nails! I've been going to this salon for the past 12 yrs since I was 16. Amazing service, clean and organized. Love the ladies here!!!

It took me a minute to realize which shop this was (i never pay attention to names lol) but believe me when I say that I love love love LOVE this shop. My friend && I decided to give it a shot one day && we've never been disappointed. White tips, designs, manis, pedis...I love it all. They've always been so nice...actually the best customer service i've encountered at any nail salon I've been to! they're not that pricey either. $22 for a full set (natural or white tip) && if you want a design on every nail, it comes out to $38 which is still less than what I've paid at other places for no design. Oh && don't think that the job isn't high quality just from the price. I'm used to nails falling off within 3 weeks or so when I go to other shops. These nails stay put for weeks && weeks. When I don't have the funds or the time to stop in for a fill, I have to pry the nails off a little each day for days before they'll come off. I went to another place in National City to "save a couple bucks" once && I really regretted it. The nails from there fell off within a week...so I saved money on the first one but I had to qet 2 full sets in a week so no money saved in the long run. For Mother's Day last year, my mom && I went over to Magic Nails to get pampered with mani/pedis. My mom got a pedicure with white tip && a manicure;; I qot a full set && a pedicure. Now if I remember correctly, I spent less than $100 that day (tips for 4 ladies included). My mom is so picky about salons since she does all that stuff too but even she had to admit that this place is a hidden treasure. Only con for me is that they do not do powder gel tips (or whatever they're called..I forget) so I have to go somewhere else when I want those done. But obviously is doesn't bother me that much cause this place is still 5 stars in my book. read more

Pedicure- Although there are no spa chairs, the pedicure here is just like a spa pedicure. They massage and exfoliate included. I won't go anywhere else, because I always return to Magic Nails. I like how Lee does her work. This is a family owned business. They are friendly and welcoming, if you call ahead they'll work to see you sometimes extended after closing hours, but you arrive before closing. I LOVEEEEE Magic nails!!! It's operated by a family of 4 females. I always have Logan do my gel nails and she's wonderful! For $28 you get your nails cleaned (extremely well) and you also get a 5-10 min massage! Yes, the place seems "cheap" meaning they don't have those super fancy spa chairs and whatnot but you get such a great mani or pedi here compared to those expensive places!! Im sad that I've moved out of town and cant go here anymore! But when I'm visiting family I'm def stopping in to see Logan!!! P.S. They only accept cash, no card. I'm browsing around pictures from the other salons around the area and yes, even I have to admit some of the other salons look incredible but if you care ultimately about what your nails look like at the END of your experience, then does it really matter that you were sitting in a 'office chair' (excuse me, Annie S, as I happily take your seat)? If you're like me, hell, I don't care if it's cash only or 'straight out of Compton', just make my nails look so nice that I receive compliments from the bank teller or the sales associate (from Burberry actually, someone who is surrounded by beautiful things all day). Mimi has been in this profession since President Clinton took office so you can bet that she knows a thing or two about how your nails should look. I honestly cannot wrap my head around how women think it looks okay, even nice, when your nails look like the shape of an 'A' or what I like to think of as duck feet... You know, your nail grows wider as they lengthen. I usually tell myself these women are so blind to beauty and are so disillusioned they can't even recognize beauty if it hit them upside the head. I usually just like a manicure and pedicure with a french polish or something classic like red or a burgundy/brown but Mimi always sculpts my nails into such a beautiful shape and finishes it off with a polish done so perfectly... Her American-French is done incredibly beautiful. I always walk away feeling like my hands belong in some fashion editorial (eh, I read too much of em). I'm normally not an active yelper... I just search places up and read a couple of reviews and am on my way but because I adore Mimi's work and her family that run this place, I felt obligated to write a good review to offset the bad one. The bottom line is, if you want your nails to look like duck feet, don't come to Mimi because this is not the place but if you're brave enough to drive to 'Compton,' then Mimi is your go-to-girl and you won't be disappointed. I came to this place because it was near my house , and the place I usually go to was closed . & I asked for a pedicure they don't have fancy pedicure seats , they over charge for a pedi , and the lady that did my toes , cut almost all my nail off ! Like really !!!!????? I was pretty mad because I like my nails Jst trimmed ! And long . And this lady Jst cuts my whole nail off , and left them tiny !!! Sorry Miss Thang from Chicago didn't like it....she can go on a get then...Save the chair space for us women who appreciate good work and friendly staff and a real concern for your mani pedi waxing needs. These ladies are the best. The service they give is second to none! It is true, no fancy spa chairs with built in massage. The don't have the widest color selection, but what they have is top notch service. Who needs a fancy massage chair anyway? I get a gel manicure and this is always done to perfection, plus you get a hands on massage all the way up into your scalp! My pedicures are always done by the owner's mother and she is so kind and caring and takes good care of my slightly ticklish and tender feet and then gives a very relaxing leg massage, which has done wonders to the healing of my broken leg!
