Spent the weekend in Sacramento and Magpie has come up a few times to be on par with the Chicago food scene so I had to try! There is a really nice outdoor patio with heat lamps. Super spacious and dog friendly of course. Between four, we shared the fried panko asparagus, saffron arancini, and pork belly as our appetizers. We also ordered the black bean chili, winter BLT, and acme burger with fries. Fried panko asparagus - I'm not a huge fan of asparagus but this was super unique. I loved the play on the egg salad on top. I've never had egg salad that was super lemony but I think it helped pull everything together and make the fried part of the dish feel less heavy. Pork belly - Really tender and flavorful. I was a little thrown off by the apples but no comparison because our dog enjoyed it! Saffron arancini - Amazing. No words. Really fresh and love the addition of dill. I didn't try the winter BLT or black bean chili but I heard nothing but raving reviews. The winter BLT was honestly an art masterpiece. As for the ACME burger, the bread was fluffy and delicious and the burger was good but when I think about Chicago burgers, probably not on the same level. However! I can agree that the appetizers resemble those in some of my favorite restaurants in the Windy City. Overall, a serious gem in Sacramento and the service was amazing and friendly.
Magpie Café is exactly the kind of restaurant that defines how I love to dine. Their menu is thoughtfully driven by the seasons, shifting often to reflect what's freshest and most inspiring at the moment. Dishes are presented in a way that encourages sharing, making the experience feel both communal and intentional. I've yet to have anything that disappoints. Their salads are among the best in the city--vibrant, balanced, and far from an afterthought--and the anchovy toast is nothing short of exceptional. It's the kind of place I'd bring out-of-town guests to showcase why Sacramento proudly carries the title of America's Farm-to-Fork Capital.
Is my mom's first time dining in a western restaurant and she loves it! Everything taste good, above our expectation, only improvement would be the pork belly if it could have some simple marinate to have some base taste would be great, and great services with attentive waitress and waiters, great atmosphere for dating with the dark environment vibe.
Food: Codfish Dip, Miso Radish, Sautéed Greens and Gnocchi. Literally all of them 10/10. I was surprised at how well balanced and delicious everything was. Even though the taste was very rich, it also felt clean and didn't make my stomach feel bloated. Service is friendly and informative. Love how proactive they are. Ambiance is lovely. Low lighting, warm walls, carefully chosen art. I can't wait to come back again!
Love, love, love Magpie! They never disappoint. We went for dinner and made reservations ahead of time. When you enter, the lights are dim but it gives a great vibe. The drinks are also so good and you a get a bang for your buck! I don't think I've ever had a bad drink here. I had the steak and my friend had the gnocchi and let's just say our plates were cleared off by how delicious the food was. This is a nice place to have a girls date to catch up or to bring your partner for a special occasion. Also, there is metered parking. We parked across the street at the park so it wasn't a bad walk to the restaurant. You definitely want to come a little earlier to find parking as it can get busy in that area.
6/5 stars for Magpie if I could! Magpie has been on my list to try for a long time, and I'm so glad we finally got to go during Dine Downtown week! My husband and I both went with the prix fixe menu for $45/person, and it was absolutely divine. We both chose the artisanal salad with house-made potato chips and onion dip. For our entrees my husband went with the gnocchi and batter-fried winter squash, while I went with the steelhead trout and seasonal roasted vegetables. Lastly, for dessert we got both the chocolate avocado mousse and meringue with lemon curd to share. We started off with some cocktails--I chose the Yeti and my husband chose the Rodeo Star. Both were made and presented beautifully, and wonderfully smooth. The salad was absolutely refreshing. I especially loved the crispy quinoa. I'm also a sucker for purple leaves, and the apple cider vinaigrette was right up my alley. The apple slices and radishes were a perfect pairing. The house-made potato chips and onion dip were spectacular. Our entrees were beautifully plated, and we were both so eager to dig in. Boy oh boy was the skin on my steelhead trout crispy, and paired with the beurre blanc sauce, I went straight to culinary heaven. The trout roe had a wonderful mouthfeel, and the smashed potatoes were perfect for soaking up every last drop of the beurre blanc sauce. The roasted veggies were a nice pairing with my trout as well! My husband was enamored with his gnocchi dish too. The duck confit was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the gnocchi had a lovely crispy bite. I tried a bit of both the duck and the gnocchi and was blown away by the texture and flavor of both. The batter fried winter squash was excellent as well. Dessert was a perfect way to end our meal, paired with their seasonal cider on draft. While I loved the chocolate avocado mousse, the meringue was definitely my favorite of the two. Service was attentive, and we were given a decanter of water to replenish our glasses, which I always appreciate. We were seated in the back corner, which I also enjoyed, so it was more of a semi-private dining experience away from the rest of the other diners. We left stuffed and happy. Definitely a meal to remember! I have eaten at many New American restaurants, including some in Carmel, but Magpie sits high on my list of favorite places for New American, and I will most certainly be back. The freshness of each ingredient and thoughtfulness of each element in every dish are main contributors as to why Magpie stands out from the rest.
My favorite Dine Downtown 2026 experience! This was my first visit, and I made a reservation for two on a weekday evening. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed! Service was excellent, and wait staff got us seated in a timely manner. We waited less than five minutes past our reservation, which wasn't an issue, but I appreciated how customer-focused wait staff were! Our server was quick, to the point, and less personable, but I didn't mind as we were ready to order. Magpie's Dine Downtown menu offers plenty of options to customize your own 3-course meal. I started with the artisan lettuces with a side of bread and hummus. The salad was a little overdressed, but it was nicely offset by the bread and hummus. For my entree, I got the steelhead trout, which was amazing! Crispy skin, beautiful presentation, and the right amount of beurre blanc. For the side, I ordered the roasted vegetables with Seka Hills Olive Oil - good variety of vegetables including carrots, cauliflower, and beets! Finally, my partner and I ended with the chocolate and avocado mousse. It was smooth and a little salty, but overall very satisfying. It would've been nice to have the orange flavor infused too! Magpie Cafe is a great choice if you're looking for somewhere nice to dine downtown and celebrate a special occasion! Low light ambiance and perfect for a date night, business meeting, or simply any occasion to celebrate.
The special of the day which was the beet salad was delicious and our first waiter provided excellent service. Our first waiter (tall, slender, brown/blonde hair) had to leave and our second waiter (tall, slender, dark complexion with a poinytail) took over while my friend and I were waiting for our food. There were only three other tables of 2-4 people each. When we finished the waiter asked if we were done and we said yes, so he removed our plates and silverware. We waited for him to bring the check for about 10 minutes before I tried to get his attention about 3 times while looking in our direction. I finally had to wave both my arms to get his attention and he finally came over. I asked for the check and he said "oh, you're done?" I said yes, since he asked us if we were done earlier and took our place settings away. He came back with the check and said "thank you" in a very passive aggressive way to where my friend noticed and made a comment after he left. I only gave him a 10% tip because of his attitude and started serving us (and not very well) halfway through the meal. Love the food, ambience; but that one waiter needs to know that what you give is what you get.
Happy to have finally stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. While we made a reservation, there were still plenty of tables available. I would recommend a dinner reservation as the closer we got to dinner, the more people came in. The appetizer and meal both were delicious and full of fresh ingredients. The artichoke dip was more than enough for 2 adults and a kid, though they were very kind to bring out more bread for us. The gnocchi was cooked to perfection, and the whole meal left me feeling full but with room still for more.
A really great meal if you're looking to splurge. The staff is always extremely professional and welcoming and we even got a glimpse of one of the co-owners, Janel Inouye, a local restaurant celebrity! The vibe is very crisp and modern and everything is plated beautifully! Offerings - Cauliflower Fritters - I think this was the star of the meal. Extremely well fried and well seasoned. The sauce was very flavorful and other accoutrements paired perfectly. - Crudo - I think this was decent. I remember going to a talk once about Magpie's dedication to sustainable seafood and was excited to try it. I think it was good but not special. Flavors were very subtle, which may have been intentional for the fish. - Lamb - this was my partner's favorite. Cooked extremely well, perfect texture. The side veggies were a fine addition. - Steak - I may be biased but I don't think this was very spectacular at all. It was cooked medium rare as ordered, but lacked flavor and seasoning. A bit of salt or even a sauce on the side would have helped. Or is that sacrilegious for steak? Perhaps my simple palette could not appreciate the meat on its own. The sides were also a bit too oily and again, lacked flavor. Overall, I would say it's a great restaurant with good quality ingredients but they rely (heavily) on the ingredients shining and may sometimes lack taste and flavor. Cooking techniques seem 10/10 too!
DINNER REVIEW: Stopped into Magpie on a Tuesday night around 7:30 PM for dinner. Magpie has been on my list of places I wanted to check out for a while so this was really exciting for me. I appreciate farm-to-table/local farmer restaurants and dining. I ordered: * Farmer Fritto * Crudo (scallop) * Western Lamb Chops The farmers fritto was 4/5. Texture of the fried batter was incredible and the vegetables remained al dente. What I didn't love was the sweet mayonnaise type of sauce served with this dish and the fried bell pepper...it's a weird vegetable to batter and fry because of its water content. I enjoyed the string beans, artichoke, carrot, and zucchini. Everything tasted fresh and I would order again. The scallop crudo was delicious. Although it probably deserves a five, I give it a 4/5 because when it arrived to my table I could not help but notice the strong scent of raw fish/seafood. The fresh pluots and cilantro added a lovely brightness to the dish, as well as a subtle contrast of sweet to savory/salty. I loved, conceptionally, the teeny dollops of pluot sorbet but I struggled to decide if it did anything for the dish other than add lovely pop of color and more sweetness. If you love seafood and scallops, it's definitely worth the try. Finally, I settled on the lamb chops. It took me a few bites to settle into the dish and decide...4/5 is where I'm landing. The dish seemed middle eastern inspired, pulling together baba ganoush, summer squash, cherry tomato, pickles, fresh herbs and sumac yogurt. Instead of the roasted eggplant flavor that I was excited for, it was giving more "hummus" than baba ganoush. Yummy still. Cherry tomatoes were excellent and I'm not even a huge tomato person. The vegetables again were al dente and the pickles were a nice touch. What made this dish for instead of a five for me was the glob of sumac yogurt that was dumped on top of one of the two lamb chops. The yogurt was cold and I would have preferred a little off to the sides. The restaurant is dimly lit, and I loved the music selection. The music was not loud, but at the right volume to where you could hear it, but still enjoy conversation with others. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I would return to magpie and it is somewhere I would recommend for those who appreciate local menus.

I have been wanting to check out Magpie for quite some time. I'm glad I did! We started with the Arincine and chips with onion dip. They were both quite tasty and came out quickly. We also tried the lemon bomb, their summer mojito. It was a refreshing summer cocktail. We ordered the shrimp, avocado and grapefruit salad and the gnocchi. The salad was just ok. I like my greens cut up more than these were. The avocado was not so much slices as an avocado mush. The salad had a yummy grapefruit vinaigrette but the salad was so overdressed. I will say the grapefruit was very fresh. The gnocchi was fresh and hot and pillow-y. It is tight quarters inside. Not a place to go if you want a quiet dinner. The staff were friendly and attentive and the service was speedy. read more

Celebrated a birthday here. Parking was slightly challenging but doable. The restaurant was so cute and the waiter was attentive. I was blown away by how fresh the produce was! You could really taste the quality in their ingredients. Even their salad they used seasonal peaches with a light vinaigrette and the greens were tender but crispy & topped with crispy quinoa. The beef tartare was diced and marinated with a variety of spices and vegetables with some horseradish shavings for garnish. Their pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was creamy but not too heavy with a good balance of savory and hints of tomatoes. The aracino was piping hot and the garlic aioli was superb. The pork belly melted in my mouth and the peaches were a good complement to the dish. read more
I am obsessed with Magpie. It's one of my favorite go-to restaurants in Sacramento. The menu changes with the seasons bc they use the freshest locally sourced meats and vegetables which is why their food is always delicious. It's all about the ingredients. Perfect spot for casual lunch, dinner/drinks with friends or date nights. It's a lively place that can be busy at times so may have to wait a bit but I've never had an issue and I am here regularly. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating They also have a full bar with wine, local beers and excellent cocktails. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My latest favorite item is the veggie hummus bowl. It was so satisfying that after I finished I couldn't wait to come back to get it again (and I did a few days later). It didn't sound like much on the menu but I'm so happy I tried it. Every bite was like a party in my mouth. The textures - creamy hummus, perfectly prepared crisp veggies, soft forbidden rice and crunchy beet chips. One time I added avocado another time an egg. Next time I'll add both just bc why not?! There is something on the menu for everyone - sandwiches, a burger with fries, amazing salads (like the stone fruit salad), plates featuring local meats and veggies and fresh pasta dishes. Finally made it to Magpie after moving here four years ago. Why didn't I come sooner! We had an amazing meal. Came with friends, got one main and a few small plates and had a feast! The chicken was to die for. We sat outside under the twinkle lights. Lovely area, great for people watching or potentially a romantic dinner. Service was excellent. I can easily say that I'd reorder everything I had during my visit. For the table, we shared the fried broccolini and yams as well as the hummus and fresh baked bread. We all fought for the last pieces of both! The veggies specifically had a black sesame sauce and it brought some fun and fresh flavor to the dish. I enjoyed the cheeseburger. My favorite part was the jammy roasted tomato that they put on the burger instead of a standard sliced tomato. We also shared the avocado and chocolate mousse for dessert. I would say it was more of a ganache, but so great! Overall, I'm happy we tried them out and wish I had something like this restaurant closer to home. read more

Magpie Cafe is located on 16th & P street. It is the cutest cafe for any lunch date. I visited on a Sunday for a late lunch/early dinner with my boyfriend. The price range for many items is $25-45. Some items were more pricey than expected but the ingredients are also great quality and very fresh. They bring all the freshest ingredients to your dinner table. What we ordered: * The Steelhead trout($36); it had such great crisp skin. I typically do not like to eat the skin of any fish but this one was different. I ate it all! It was cooked to perfection and perfectly paired with potatoes. Next time I order this I will probably order the sauce it comes with on the side, it is a buerre blanc. Eating a lot of it was a little overpowering for my taste. * Niman Ranch Pork Chops ($42); It was amazing! The fruit compote and creamy polenta with the pork chop is a different twist but definitely a well balanced and delicious combination. *Farmers Friend ($14) *Port of Rye ($12) -their cocktail menu truly represents freshness and quality ingredients just like their food items. Haven't been in a long time so happy to meet my friend for dinner last night. The atmosphere is always so cozy and classy without feeling uptight. Staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. When someone asks what is the quintessential restaurant that describes Sacramento, I say Magpie Cafe. It's farm to fork, it's local, it's seasonal, sustainable, uses thoughtful and high quality ingredients, and it's creative. The menu rotates and I'm always excited to see what's on it. I got their Duck Confit w/ cabbage pancake and it was nothing what expected. It reminded me of a German potato pancake. The duck was delicious and paired well with the cabbage pancake and Fuji apple slices. But the highlight of the night was the anchovy toast appetizer which is seriously two bites of heaven. I could eat 10 of them! Overall it was a wonderful evening and will be back very soon! read more

I think it's safe to say that Magpie Cafe is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. The food is extremely fresh, and the menu rotates to show off what is in season. We live about 40 minutes away, and drive over just for Magpie. The service has always been great, and we enjoy sitting in the cozy back corner. read more
This place definitely catches your eye if you're walking around due to is really nice curb appeal. I would say, the menu is extremely over priced for the portion sizes that are offered. This place is also very designed to one specific palate and I don't believe a majority of people would be able to find something to eat. I had the winter BLT which had everything I knew would be a "safe" option for me. The bacon was perfect! The only downer was the sandwich was incredibly hard and dry. My friends got the house made pasta and they both enjoyed it but the portion didn't feel fulfilling. All in all the service was okay everyone seemed kind but we waited a bit for our food along with our check our waitress did however keep our glasses filled with water. Overall not a bad experience but I don't think I would come again due to the price and less variety. read more
They open from 12-9, love it because on our way to Tahoe we can pop in at 4pm for an early dinner and enjoy some quiet ambiance. The place is smelled casual elegance with a bar on the right along the wall and plenty of seating tables to the left. Black tables with bright flowers on each of them. Beautiful yet casual. Service was warm and welcoming. Our waitress was polite and helpful, with a little bit of chatter in between and quick to her feet when we asked for help. I chose Magpie because of its creative menu and on it we chose the house made pasta with duck and Japanese pumpkins. It came out a bit different from what I was expecting, especially the long twin noodle shape pasta and how the pumpkin was cut and roasted to a soft but more moist texture, but it tasted good. Fried Brussels sprouts could not go wrong. The steak and fries is a big dish. The steaks are cut already, it's more like a medium while I asked for medium rare but the crust has good seasoning and the meat is juicy and tender. It also comes with a huge pile of fries. The cheese board was a bit disappointing for the kid as the bread was too hard and crunchy for the teeth. The quince paste is the best part as it brings out the sweetness to balance out the slightly bitter aftertaste from the Brie. The orange slices are also a good mix. But we are not dried fruit fans, so maybe next time we should check on the type of bread before ordering. The cidar beer is also delicious. All in all a great stop! I saw our neighbor table ordered the dungeonese crab and shrimp salad, it's a huge bowl and looks delicious. I think it can't go wrong either. read more
I was a little apprehensive when I saw the prices, but although Magpie is definitely on the expensive side, I can confirm it's still worth a visit. We accidentally stumbled in on a week where they were running a three course special, so we let that guide our choices. I had the toasted quinoa and greens salad, which was wonderfully nutty with a tart finish from the vinegrette. It also came with a side of fluffy, just-toasted bread and hummus, both of which were delicious. The main course was salmon with potatoes, carrots, and a light sauce. They crisped the salmon skin PERFECTLY, and the fish itself was still moist and flaky. Fried squash was the side I chose, and it was sweet with a light tempura batter - so good. The only let down was the dessert. I got the lemon curd, which was unpleasantly grainy although the flavor was nice. The ambiance is great too, moody with some candle-esque lighting. Our waiter was polite and helpful, and the food was brought out pretty quickly after the orders went in. I'd definitely return for a date night some time! read more

We love this spot in Midtown, Sacramento. Its a true veggie paradise, as you can always get fresh local veggies with great pairings and sauces. I think it's nice when you can find a nice restaurant that has a variety of fresh, from the Earth food options. And to that point, mostly those options. It's a good break up from most restaurants who focus on meat and processed/fried options first. We loved the crudo, as it was a nice balance with the citrus and oil. The carpaccio was also amazing with the bread that was firm but not break your teeth hard. Wine list is great, middle of the road to not break the bank but some delicious choices. We went with the CA Pinot and were not disappointed. We've enjoyed brunch here too, also a great option! You must go if you haven't and my review sounds up your alley. read more
Came here for dinner. It was an enjoyable experience. Food was amazing, we split all of the dishes we ordered and everything was perfect. The hummus and olive oil with bread and the scallops were excellent, the pesto pasta was light and wasn't too heavy, salad was refreshing, and the pork chop was delicious. We got here pretty late but was still seated and treated well. Our server was on his furst day of training and did an excellent job of checking in on us and making accommodations for us. We had the ceviche, which was nice needed more salt tho. Absolutely appreciated the server splitting our ceviche in 2 bowls so it'd be easier to eat. Beef tartare was nice too. I've had better but it was my friends first time and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was texture was just perfect and went perfectly with the condiments Homeless folks sat in front of our table as we ate dinner which I wasn't a fan of; I'm from the northeast and it isn't normal to hv homeless folks talking to themselves loudly sit in front of you while you have dinner. read more

This is an awesome spot in a great location, right off the corner of 16th and P. We were able to find seating pretty quickly for a party of 8. Service was great. We got some wonderful recommendations. The trout and pasta were tasty. The espresso martini however was a little off, it may have had too much cream. The portion sizes are also fairly small and prices are a little high. Item prices range from 25-45. The food quality however is great. read more
Came here for Father's with the family for a party 6 late Sunday morning. It was pretty busy already, but we were able to get a table that accommodated all of us. It was hard to decide at first because so many things sounded great. It has been many years since I've dined at Magpie and I was due to return. We came early, so it wasn't busy inside. I don't usually drink, but I ordered a cranberry gin fizz. It was fruity with a frothy top. We started with an arancini. It was creamy and crispy. Then we had the roasted beet panzanella. We enjoyed it a lot. There were slices of crispy beets along with chunks of sweet beets. They went well with the Burrata and feta cheese. Our main dish was the strozzaprete with duck and red kuri squash. Strozzapreti is a type of pasta. The squash was hearty, and I felt like I didn't even need the duck. We also ordered an avocado salmon toast as well, but I was too full at that point. Service was great. The owner/chef? came by to check in on us. He also stopped by toward the end of the meal and gave us a container of quince paste- sweet!
