I've been putting this off for some time. My mother was in town. We went and checked out that side of St. Charles. Came across Magpies due to a resident who recommended it. I tried to look past how often they were using the microwave. Had I known they were just heating up most things with a microwave I would have rather waited to eat at home. Than to spend money and not cheap money on microwaved food. The other things my mother and I saw suprised me. How is this place still open? Disgusting. Maybe, put a wall up in front of the kitchen or drape something so people who can see INSIDE can't see how you're handling the food. That being said, I do not recommend this place. It may have been good at some point in the past, but not after our experience. They need to maybe recertify their employees who handle the food with ServSafe. It's not the level of excellence that I have come to expect from an Old Towne St. Charles restaurant! read more

Magpies has a grill menu during the warmer months that offers fish, beef , pork, chicken and really delicious side items. We had mahi mahi with mango salsa and grilled asparagus, it was great! They do have a full bar also...I don't know why it says beer and wine only on the description. You can get pretty much any cocktail you want, and they only use top shelf liquor. As far as groups go, if you contact them in advance you can usually make arrangements for that, I've even seen them do wedding receptions. read more

I live in St. Charles, moved over here across the River from St. Louis County esp. because of quaint Main Street. Magpie's has been my favorite for 20 years, ever since my brother who'd been living in St. Charles before myself said, "try the baked potato soup." I LOVE the patio, best ambiance ever. I don't think I've ever had bad service and always I've loved whatever I've ordered over the years. Last year I bought the Restaurant.com coupons (five of them!) to make sure I got there more often with my husband for a night out. Last Thursday I had the Mediterranean Salad. It was our first time to visit Historic St. Charles. We asked several of the merchants who they would recommend for lunch. Magpie's seemed to be the consensus, so we tried it. The seating process was a little confusing for the novice. We finally seated ourselves on the patio and were greeted quickly by our server. We ordered the Mediterranean Salad and veggie wrap/salad combo. The food was delicious, however, our server mysteriously disappeared after our food arrived, forcing us to wave down another for our bill 30 minutes later. One surprise perk was that a small jazz band arrived shortly after we were seated. The young group were really talented and accomplished musicians. Thoroughly enjoyed! read more

Was recommended to go here for the Southwest Salad and amazing desserts. Arrived and walked in, told to seat ourselves. We sat in the front room, at a table completely visible to the host stand/bar. Menu was small, one side was drinks, the other side was sandwiches and seafood. No Southwest salad (or any of the salads in other Yelp reviews) in sight, decided on one of the seafood options while we waited for service. Sat for 10 minutes listening to the gossipy waitresses and host talk about their exes and all their troubles with breakups. Very loudly I might add. Very unprofessional. After sitting for 10 minutes without being attended or even acknowledged, we walked out. Hostess standing at the bar did not even ask why we left. Although the person who recommended us RAVED about everything on the menu, I can't even review the food because we never had the chance. Bad service will lead me to not return. read more

Love this place. It's got a beautiful shady patio area surrounded by flowers. The service is quick and very friendly. We love the spinach salad, the baked potato soup, and the chicken salad is delicious. The atmosphere is so quaint and the perfect place to eat and visit in historical St Charles, MO. read more

I would like to review the food and service at Magpie's but can only comment on the service which was inhospitable. My date and I drove 20 miles to the restaurant arriving 25 minutes before the posted closing time only to be told by the manager (owner?) that they were closed. We were disappointed and asked whether they would accept our Groupon, which was to expire that day, at a later date. They said no, they would only credit us what we had paid for the Groupon. We said that given that we had driven far afield to patronize their business and they had closed early we felt it only fair that we should be able to use the full Groupon at another time. They said no we should have made a reservation (for a Tuesday night!). We asked if we could maybe get a complimentary drink at the bar or something and were told no, they were closed. The restaurant business more than any other is about taking care of the customer, who's visit represents a 100% discretionary expenditure in a space where many choices exist. In our case, we would never choose to go to Magpie's again if it were not for the residual value of our Groupon. We returned to our car rather stunned that Magpie's management turned away at every opportunity it had to make us want to come back. Fortunately the date was saved by a warm welcome and heavenly meal at Bella Vino a tapas place a few blocks away. This was our second extremely satisfying visit to Bella Vino. Although we were the last table to be seated we never felt hurried by the staff which allowed us to linger, even some time after our check was paid. That's hospitality! read more

the baked potato soup is the best I have ever had. That alone is worth the trip there. The waiter was outstanding and very helpful in that I had never been there in what to order. I've been here more times than I can count. This spot fills up fast around lunch time, and can be a little longer than your usual service when they're busy, but it's well worth it. The wait staff is always polite, and quick to take care of any issue, which has only happened once in all the times I've been there. Consistently the best French Dip in town. read more

They cook most of their food in a MICROWAVE!!! It's not "baked brie" if it's microwaved. I tried this place many times and after the last...well...that was the last. I will say their baked potato soup is good and the patio is nice but for microwaved food it's not worth the price point. read more

My wife and I had heard good things about Magpie Café so we decided to give it a try. We arrived late on Saturday evening, which happened to be a beautiful night so we opted to eat on their outside patio. The scenery was nice but considering the sun was already down it could have been a little more well lit. A candle on each table would have helped. We were told to seat ourselves, but didn't realize that there was still food scraps from a previous diner on our table do the lighting. When the waitress came she did wipe the table down for us. We decided to get the chicken nachos as an appetizer. I ordered the southwest chicken salad as my entrée, and my wife opted for the baked potato soup and house salad. Our appetizer and meal both came quickly. The chicken nachos were excellent. You could tell that the chicken was grilled in house. My salad though was fair at best. The good was again the chicken plus the dressing was top notch. The bad was the fact that the salad had a real earthy taste to it, which is something I'm not a fan of. The salad was also supposed to have tortilla strips on it, but when it came all I got was a pile of tortilla chips on the side. My wife's salad was similar to mine. She really liked the dressing but also complained about the earthy taste of the salad. She enjoyed her baked potato soup. We were also served bread which was tasty. Even though we finished our meal at about 9:15 pm they were already getting ready to close up for the night. We waited for quite some time for our check. The staff were taking down umbrellas at the tables right next to us as my wife and I sat there obviously finished with our meal, but no one offered to find our waitress for us even though we were the last ones on the patio. It seemed like the staff was in a hurry to close up. Why they were closing at 9:30 on a Saturday night was beyond us, as well as 3 other couples who seemed surprised and disappointed when they were turned away as we were leaving. Overall our dining experience here wasn't bad but wasn't good either. I was a little disappointed considering the good things that I heard about the place. read more

Magpie's always has FRESHEST food in town! Always tasty. Great service, and a bonus of live acoustic music on select nights. I check their website for music listings and dinner specials. Their dinner menu is great - I've tried almost everything from steaks to pasta and it has all been good. And be sure you save room for their homemade desserts! read more

We always look at value for dollar and really do not mind spending money for an excellent meal. If we have dinner out and spend with wine, two entrees and tip a $100.00 we expect a certain level of sevice and food quality. Needless to say I would have rather gone to Steak and Shake. A decent burger and chile and a couple of soft drinks. At Steak and Shake we receive good service and value. I will never go back to to Magpies. Too many places to go where we won't be dissappointed. I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! I have been a customer for over twenty five years and still crave the food. From their delicious lunch menu that consists of a variety of quiche, soups, salads and sandwiches to their evening menu which consists of grilled foods and pastas-it's a winner in all categories. I recently hired them to cater our company party (60-80 people) and they won in that category as well. Two of my friends and I have been going to Magpie's since the mid 80's. It's a must on our list when we go to St. Charles on our annual trip - more like tradition!! The food is always wonderful (our usual is baked potatoe soup, palm salad and they get sandwiches. And of course dessert!!!) The staff and atmospher are always pleasant and up beat. The owner is often there and is such a nice lady. I purchased one of her cookbooks and have enjoyed several of the recipies and the stories. I cannot go to St. Charles and not eat at Magpie's - it's one of our favorites. read more

Wow- this was out first and last visit to this place. Not only did we receive poor service (the waitress first helped a table that arrived after us-then ignored us for another 10 min) but the food was subpar as well. I had the "good neighbor" and I'm just glad I ordered a half sandwich is what I'll say.. My husband ordered the French dip- it was bottled au jus and they toasted the entire bun (instead of just the inside) so it was basically just a hard rock of bread and meat-ick; and to top it off there wasn't much meat on the sandwich !also ordered an over priced schafly for being bottled and forgot to mention earlier the waitress forgot to bring us drinks all together! I had to flag down another waitress to ask for our waters and when our original waitress came back she didn't even apologize for the mistake. Now I will certainly for give these things if its super busy- but it wasn't and I wouldn't recommend this place. We also tried to let the register person know of the poor experience because she asked "how was everything" and when I said that our experience actually wasn't good and our service was poor she didn't even respond- just processed our payment. so I then said I'm glad that I have already placed my review of this establishment on yelp. So I walked away and my husband was waiting for the receipt and even that person was being rude and seemed to be taking it personally that we weren't thrilled with the place- he walked away as well. Terrible. I hadn't eaten for almost 12 hours and I was starving, so we stopped into Magpies and I ordered the french dip - didn't even finish it. The bread was so hard that it cut my mouth, the Au jus was from concentrate and it came with a meager portion of tepid meat. As hungry as I was I didn't even eat the whole thing. The hummus wasn't fresh either, and they didn't bring our waters out until we finally had to flag down a waiter to bring our waters. When I went to pay, the lady at the register asked how everything went, so I commented on the problems with the french dip and she started to get a little rude. I said to her that she doesn't have to take the comments I'm saying personally - then she proceeded to give ME an earful, I sat there like an idiot being embarrassed by her while she chewed me out in front of other customers. I'm never going back to that place again - I can make a better french dip at home - it's one of the easiest things to make so I was surprised how messed up it was - I'm guessing they've either never tried their french dip, or never tried a good french dip, or both. read more

Traveling through the area, we learned about the historic St. Charles downtown and went to the Magpie Restaurant. First of all, we walked in to the front door of a charming brick home where a blond woman was doing inventory behind the short bar (definitely not a hostess stand). But we had never been there before and waited patiently for her attention. Big Mistake! We were gruffly asked what we wanted! She amended that posture upon seeing the shocked looks on our faces and we were told to sit anywhere we would like. We started off by sharing the Baked Brie appetizer, that, as per (quoting from the menu): "We're told ours is the best! Served with seasonal fruit, toasted almonds and French bread" which in this case, Tuesday October 21st, 2014, meant that we were presented with an oblong plate of melted brie/goo and grease, topped with a smattering of massed produced, sliced almonds and brightly colored, but dried, cranberries (the seasonal fruit? well, cranberries ARE kind of fall-ish), with the obligatory rind of the slice of brie, floating at random in the greasy brie/goo. The "French" bread presented with this best of all appetizers, was mass market from the local superstore and had the consistency of old fashioned sliced white bread best used for spit balls! Except for the greasiness, the taste was "ok". We also shared the entree of Lemon Artichoke Chicken which, although not exactly as described in the menu, was delicious none-the-less. The entree came with two sides, one of which was described by our waitress as "twice baked mashed potatoes" --- which we never could get her to understand could not be TWICE baked unless made from previously baked potatoes, oh well, not the sharpest tool in the shed. --- They were just so-so. The mixed grilled vegetables were less than so-so, as sloppy knife skills and inconsistent cooking were on display. We finished the meal by sharing a coconut cream pie slice that was quite tasty. I guess a good dessert makes up for some of the not so great experience, but, after all, the coconut pie was supposed to be their signature! read more
