Although I'm an avid meat eater and I love my meats in my curry, I have to say I usually like the sauces/curry broth more and would sop up all the deliciousness with rice or naan. This place is strictly vegetarian and I was willing to give it a try cause of all the amazing reviews - and you guys are right, there's definitely nothing like this experience and I don't think they could've done anything better for an Indian vegetarian place. We came by for lunch and was welcomed by the owner. He was really friendly and we were seated immediately. We waited for the arrival of the 3rd person in our party, and right when she sat down - we were bombarded with immediate service! The owner came by to ask us if this was our first visit, we said yes and he told us he'll be back once we get all our food to further explain to us what the dishes were and how we should pair everything. A server comes to pour water over your hands for a quick wash, another server comes so you can place a coin in a collection figurine (I'm sorry I don't recall what it was), I'm assuming for good luck or as some kind of offering for the food. They didn't explain this to us but now I'm curious and sad I didn't get a chance to ask! Then the arrays of colorful and delicious food comes out - I think 5-6 different servers came by to set everything on our plates. We got a buttermilk drink, a bit on the tart side - almost like a plain lassi. It probably does well in cutting the spices but I didn't quite prefer this drink - just wasn't a favorite for my pallet. They also serve you water at the same time. Then comes another server with a salad, 3 different sauces for dipping your samosas and onions. Another person comes with 4 different curries - potatoes, chick peas, lentils, saag paneer, etc. I couldn't tell you everything I had but it was all unique in textures and flavors. I loved the potatoes and my friend loved the saag paneer and another loved the sweeter curry with the chickpeas. There's definitely something for everyone. Then comes 4 different lentils - from savory to sweet. And then the breads - there's a flat bread, a puffy savory bread, and then a cake-like bread. All depends on your preference - and an array of vegetable and plain white basmati rice. There was the curry dish/soup of the day in the middle as well, along with 2 sweets - one white milky dish and a honey like pastry. I wish I knew the names of everything! They even brought out a sample of the mango lassi - which is less sweet than what I'm use to and more of a yogurt consistency. I loved all the breads, the puffy one the most. I loved the white dessert and the soup we got for the day. They come by several times with refills of anything you want, it is all you can eat, so come hungry and leave stuffed! The food is mainly influenced from the region of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The dishes are very homey, low on grease, perfectly seasoned and perfectly spiced. Salads, crushed papadam, appetizers, chutney's, buttermilk, 3 types of daal, 2-3 types of bread, 2-3 types of rice, 2-3 types of deserts are typically served on each thali. The Alumni Association of my University, decided for an outdoor spring event. As part of organizing committee, we contacted several restaurants of Houston. To our surprise, Maharaja Bhog quoted us the best rates and their catering menu had some innovative food items. Their basic menu was priced at $15.99 + taxes. Additional item could be added to the menu at the rate of $2/person. The delivery charges were calculated on the basis of distance. I dealt with them via phone and email. The response from their office was great. They took care in explaining the portion size and even gave good suggestions with menu selection. Special thanks to Ms. Hetal and Mr. Ketan. Currently sitting here as a family of 8 for a Saturday night thali dinner. First and foremost, food is good. Service has dropped severely since the first few times I visited this place years back. The rice dishes take a terribly long time to get to the table. By then the dals and curry are super cold. Then, not enough people are serving so if you ask for water or something... it won't be coming for 15mins. There was an old man running the register. Not once during our dinner did he come to touch the table and ask if our dinner was going well and if we need anything. But right when the bill was coming out, he came and asked if we wanted paan. My friend and I came on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and had a pretty good experience! We ended up waiting about 10 minutes - the waiting area is tiny so you'll likely end up outside, so keep that in mind if the weather isn't pleasant. The outside area is covered and has a few benches. We were seated in a booth that I would later realize was right underneath an air conditioning vent that was dripping water. Unfortunately, the restaurant was full so there was nowhere else to sit. Very unpleasant every time a drip of water from who knows where ends up on your neck. The service was very quick and soon we had a full dish in front of us. Definitely a learning experience trying to figure out how to eat the soups. The servers were very polite and quick to refill your dishes. The paneer was definitely my favorite, but there wasn't a single dish I disliked (except the okra, but I just dislike okra in general so not a surprise). Overall, definitely a very fun and unique experience, especially if you haven't been before. Great concept for people who love buffets but don't want to bother with getting up each time you want a refill. They bring the food to you! They change their options daily and you can let your server know if you have any allergies and they will be sure to serve you accordingly. There was a bit of a wait when we got there, but to me that's a sign that the food is good! Once seated they come around with a pot of water to rinse your hands then they fill your water glass and a then this other cup. I made the mistake of taking a big gulp before knowing what it was. I immediately gagged because it was unexpected. It was salted buttermilk. I guess it's an acquired taste. I tried a few more sips but couldn't get into it. Once they started bringing in the food items, that's when the fun started. They have a screen next to you giving you a run through of what they have to offer. The variety of food items they have to offer changes daily and it's all vegetarian! However, that can also mean a lot of fat from other sources which may not always be the healthiest. The service is quick, slopping the food on your plate and dashing off. Everything was delicious with lots of flavor. They also offer fresh naan and their puffed bread and a variety of chutneys. Ok the table you have three types of pickles to accompany your food. My only gripe is that some of the servers wouldn't stop by our table when new tables came in so I had to flag someone down. They sat us down and they explained how it worked. They said they have 7 dishes: 4 veggies, 3 curries, and a dessert at the end. They also had appetizers, spring roll, and a savory cake. But they cook different dishes every day so it will never be the same menu each time you visit since there are so many combinations. They came out and they poured water to wash our hands and they started serving us. I ate so much food. I wanted to visit this place for a long time and finally got the chance when we were visiting Austin. We were a group of four and there was 10-15 minutes wait even at 7pm. Make sure to reach on time to get the experience of your lifetime. I have heard about this style of dining before but experiencing it first hand is a total delight. The staff was greeting everyone and they were really eager to serve each and every customer. The best part for me during this experience was dal baati ( hard wheat balls) and churma. They crumble the baati in a bowl and then pour dal on top of it. This is my favorite Rajasthani dish. The second part was the jalebi. Which is one my favorite deserts. The jalebi was fresh and they were crispy. Towards the end of our meal the owner offered another round of jalebi which adds to the great customer experience. I came to Maharaja Bhog on Dussehra, which fell on Tuesday this year. Before I proceeded, let me back up a bit. It started when my Indian coworker found out that I was on a vegetarian diet and it happened to end on Dussehra. She then offered to take me to Maharaja Bhog on this special day. Still, I didn't give up; I proceeded to call Maharaja Bhog hoping they would be opened on this holiday. Lucky me! The place was opened especially for Dussehra. I arrived at the restaurant with a couple of co-workers and I was immediately greeted by a host. He asked whether we had been here and got his answers from my two Indian-descent coworkers that they had visited here before today's occasion. One of my coworkers informed the host that she could not eat spicy food so the host placed a sign in front of her to inform the servers. A big aluminum tray and 6-7 little aluminum bowls were then placed in front of each of us. Next, we were offered a hand wash, which I thought that was a nice touch. After my hand wash, waves and waves of servers came to our table and serve food to us. Each server would have 3-4 items to offer. My friends suggested to me which dishes complemented each other. I also asked the servers as well. The servers were informative, nice, and patient with my inquisitive mind. Food: Great. I didn't know which was which. I knew nan, samosa, and other basic Indian dishes. Having said that, whatever were put in front of me were gone. Some of them I asked for second and third serving. Service: Great. This place is awesome. I heard of this place and I was excited to have another restaurant I could eat at. We came in as soon as they opened on Saturday (I skipped breakfast) and were the first ones in. The workers were crowded towards the back and we were led to a table complete with the metal dish and mini bowls. I told them we ate Jain (no onion/garlic) and they placed a little sign at our table with the word "Jain" on it. The meal came with water and a cup of buttermilk, which was interesting. I didn't mind the buttermilk but it does take some getting used to. I can't say the same for my table mates. Then the food started coming out and it was awesome. As soon as I thought that was it, more food came out until my entire plate and the little bowls were occupied. I love Indian food so I've eaten my fair share, however, I wasn't really familiar with what I was being served. I was a bit too hungry to ask though. There's a large assortment of veggie based curry like eggplant and then items of a more soupy nature, some of them appear to be yogurt based. The breads were good and came from the beginning but the rice didn't come until halfway into our meal (something some people weren't thrilled about). It's definitely more traditional - that day didn't have any malai kofta but I think one of them contained paneer. There was jalebi and a really thick and sweet mango puree. About 15 minutes in, other customers began coming in and about an hour later (yes, we were there for that long), the entire place was full. By the time we left, there were people waiting for tables. During the entire meal, we were repeatedly asked by this lady (the owner? Manager?) if we wanted more and if we did, we would get more. Sometimes, we were asked a little too much. I have a thing where I need to finish everything on my plate before I can get more so it was a little distracting when I was trying to finish my meal to see if I could stuff myself further. (Proud/Fatty moment: I managed to finish everything by the time we left and also had seconds of 2 off the veggie curries.) The servers would also walk around when there were more tables and you could flag them down. The only complaint: towards the end, they didn't do it as much. Maybe they thought we had been there for too long and didn't want to encourage us, haha. My friend wanted a stuffed appetizer thing and though I had asked for her, she never got it. It was an experience to remember. The place wasn't like your usual Indian restaurant on Hillcroft. It was more upscale and the servers had these uniforms. They even brought a fancy pitcher and basin to your table before you eat and after to wash your hands. Essentially, they wait on you and you don't need to get up at all. Food was plenty and I personally loved their lentils (did they put rice or poha in it?) because they were so tender and fluffy and not "beany" at all. I would definitely return again, but not as much as I'd like. At around $19 a person on weekends, not including tax or gratuity (which is automatically included for parties of 5 or more.... we were a party of 5), it's not to be a regular thing unless that's how you roll. However, I'm happy to say they still get good business (most of them Indians, so you have to say that their food must be authentic! ). Delicious fix for takeout! I love the thali dishes from this place. I had a Saturday dinner thali meal (which definitely serves 2 people) for takeout. It was super well-packaged (a must during rona times), filled with lots of delicious portions (their platters to change daily, but you can ask what they're serving that day). It was ready super fast, within a few minutes after I called to place my order. The service is great, the food is delicious, and you get a lot of it for ~$23 or so). I really hope to dine-in there once it's safe again. If you are showing Indian food to a friend, this style of food is not typical of Indian restaurants (just a disclaimer, but it's delicious!) and I'm happy to see some vegetarian thali-style representation in Houston! read more

This was my first time here and it's truly a unique experience! We arrived and waited near the door to get seated. Parking isn't an issue here since there's a big parking lot. The place was pretty busy and we had a 15 minute wait. We got seated and the servers started serving the various curries and thali items. I loved the rotis and trying all the various items. I wasn't a huge fan of the liquid curries because they were watery but everything else was delicious! My favorite was the paneer, vadas, and jalebi. Although it was incredibly busy, service was pretty good and the waiters came around to make sure our plates were always full. Overall, the price came out to $47 for two Thalis so definitely on the pricier side but worth it for the experience once in a while. read more
