Mai Phung is well regarded for Banh Canh. They are open for dine-in limited hours, until 3pm offers take out until 7pm. I went on a Monday afternoon and there was a bunch of people waiting outside for a table. It's a small spot with limited tables but I only waited 10-15 minutes. I ordered the #1, Banh Canh Tom Cua Thit. Vietnamese udon with crab, shrimp and pork. I love the chewy texture of the thick noodles. The soup reminded me of Rou Geng Tang, a Taiwanese thick soup but is still considerably different in flavor profile. It was delicious albeit a bit bland so I had to add the lemon and fish sauce that's on every table. I also added a ton of the chili sauce which I absolutely loved. It's very spicy and has the flavor profile of puréed fresh chilis. Tread lightly if you don't have a high heat tolerance like I do. Overall, it's good, albeit a bit pricey for what it is. In each bowl theres two shrimps, generous with the pork, but didn't really notice much crab. Still one of top Banh Canhs in my books!
I've heard about Mai Phung for a while on social media. I came with my mother for lunch on a Monday. We waited probably around 15 minutes and there were about two or three other parties before us. Be sure to sign in on the notepad. There are a few plastic stools in the front. While you're waiting, they will take your order to add it to the queue for the kitchen. When our turn was up, we were seated at small table for two. I noticed another gentleman by himself at a table for four people. Hmmmm. Anyhow, there were about five tables total inside or maybe six. It was very warm inside since there is no AC. This is a type of life where you eat and leave as quickly because it's a no-frills no ambience type of place. That's fine with me except it was pretty hot. They charge you a dollar for a little tiny paper cup of water. I ordered the number one since this is their specialty or what they're known for. My mom had the bun thit nuong cha gio. My noodle soup had a good amount of crab pieces and shrimp. It seemed like there was not a lot of noodles though. I thought the broth was a little bland. I guess I'm just not a big fan of this type of soup. If there is a next time, I'll try the bun rieu. My mother was not that crazy about her dish. She said she didn't really like the egg rolls that much. For the price, the wait and the taste of the food, I likely will not be returning when there are so many other places in the area. I try to support various mom and pop restaurants, but for the previous stated reasons, I don't think we'll be back.
Mai Phung in Westminster is such a solid, no-frills spot if you're looking for genuine, local Vietnamese comfort food. It's super casual inside with a very local vibe, and the kind of place where you come strictly for the food rather than a fancy setup. They're super well-known for their Bánh Canh, and for good reason--the thick, chewy tapioca noodles in that rich, comforting broth are incredible and easily the main event here. But surprisingly, their Phở Đặc Biệt is also excellent. The broth is deep and flavorful, the meat cuts are generous, and it easily competes with a lot of the dedicated phở spots around Little Saigon. To wash it all down, their Vietnamese iced coffee is a must--super strong, rich, and gives you that perfect, intense sweet-and-bold kick. Just a heads-up that the line can get pretty long, and the wait takes a while since they seem a bit understaffed. But once you finally get seated, the food comes out piping hot. If you're in the area and don't mind a wait for authentic, heavy-hitting noodle bowls, Mai Phung is definitely worth dropping into.
I've been coming here for over three years, and it's easily one of the top three spots for bánh canh tôm cua in Orange County. I recommend arriving early, since the line gets long around lunchtime. They take your order while you wait though, so your food comes out quickly once you're seated. I'm also a huge fan of adding extra lemon to my Viet noodle soups, so I love that each table has plenty of pre-cut slices for self-service. This place really knows what it's doing.
server was rly nice, i wasnt used to the starchy thick texture of the soup but i can tell this place is a whole in the wall price is a bit pricey for the quality though, it's a nice homey vibe
Ordered the Shrimp & Crab Udon without Pork at Mai Phung to-go and it was delicious. Broth is thick and flavorful with good amount of crab and nice size shrimp. The udon noodle was thick with a good chew to it. Service was quick and accommodating to our request. Family owned business ambiance - quaint and simple - nothing to rave about. Over-all the Shrimp & Crab Udon is delicious (Banh Canh Tom Cua)
Ate again at this tiny restaurant with my Vietnamese speaking friend. She ordered for me "bun thit Nuong cha go". It was for me an absolutely flavorful and satisfying broth noodle soup with pork & shrimp. Make sure to arrive early to get a seat at this restaurant with only a few tables or plan on ordering take out.
Very limited seating and quite busy on weekends of course, but worth the wait. We arrived around 1pm and got seated by 1:50pm for a table of 2. There's a yellow notepad near the entrance on the window sill which is where you can write your name and party number down if staff is too busy serving tables. They go down the list and take your order prior to getting seated, menu is taped to the window to view. 1. Banh Canh Tom Cau Thit -thick silky rich broth perfect for cold weather with silky noodles, wished it was slightly more chewier. Shrimp was fresh with a crisp snap. Crab was fresh and flavorful but there were a few crab cartilage here and there but not too many, just spit them out. Pork was thinly sliced and tender. I'm from San Gabriel Valley and there aren't many restaurants that serve Banh Canh. I personally think it's worth the drive out here. 15. Phan Cha Gio (eggrolls)- so crispy! It's the rice paper type of eggroll, paired well with my hot bowl of Banh Canh. Pork filling was juicy and tender.
Had a group of 10 and waited about 30 minutes or so. It's a super small place. They will also take your order while you're in line so you can get it a few minutes after you sit down. Broth of the banh Canh cua was real flavorful with the crab and thick broth consistency. I'd def go back. Must also get the egg rolls. Be aware of the hot sauce. It's super spicy

A small restaurant with limited seating but is usually busy, as they are only open a few hours of the day. There was a notepad outside to add your party's info onto and a few short, plastic seats available for use. A few minutes before being seated, the host would take your order. So after being seated, you'll just wait a bit longer for the food to arrive to the table. I had the banh canh cua tom thit and the noodles and broth consistency were nice. The noodles were soft and bouncy, while the broth had just the right amount of thickness for my liking. The toppings were plentiful and the bowl itself was filling. The banh canh is what they're known for but honestly, I was overhyped for it. Don't get me wrong, it was ok but I was expecting much better. Would I crave it again? No. Would I wait as long for it? Probably not. But it's probably good to have when you do crave banh canh since there's not too many other places in the area that serves it well. My group also had the bun thit bo xao and mi kho tom cua thit. The bun thit bo xao was said to be not as appetizing compared to the mi kho. The mi kho was said to be flavorful and enjoyable, and it also came with a small side of broth. Prices on the menu is a flat charge. So, if it was $17, your total is $17. Also, heads up! There's no A/C in there and the door stays open. So be prepared to be hot while eating, unless it's cool outside.
Just warning you, you will wait. It's a small restaurant with about 7 tables. Is it the worth the wait? Most definitely. This restaurant is known for its banh can com của. The broth is perfectly thick. And there is so much crab! I was surprised to see mushrooms (I love mushrooms!). There is a homemade chili that will set your mouth on fire so be warned. But it's delicious. Service is quick and friendly.
Mai Phung is highly recommended on Yelp for its Banh Canh noodle soup, so I had to give it a try. I ordered the Banh Canh Tom Cua ($17), and it was flavorful and hit all the right notes. The noodles were soft and thick, served with just enough shrimp and crab meat. The broth is on the thicker side, but the lime wedges on the table help balance it out nicely. I also tried the Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($17). It was solid, but it didn't stand out compared to similar dishes at other Vietnamese spots. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait during peak times. My only complaint is the price, at $17 per bowl, it feels a bit steep. Still, I would come back for the Banh Canh when the craving hits.
This place is known for their banh canh and yes it is one of the best places to get your thick broth crab banh canh. However I got to try their hu tieu kho and it was definitely high quality with the amount of crab meats they added. It's not your typical hu tieu kho, this one has crab, pork, large shrimps and chicharrones. They used fresh thick soft noodles here so if you're into the chewy kind make sure to ask. I have to knock a point due to the broth tasted like american can chicken broth rather than freshly made broth. Other than that this place uses high quality ingredients and pricing seems fair for what they served. $16 for the large bowl. Service was fast, restaurant is small so maybe best to order togo. read more

Get here early or be ready to wait ... However the wait is worth it! Of course they are known for their Banh Canh Tom Cua which is #1 on the menu. The soup was tasty and the seafood was fresh. I forgot to take a photo of their hours but they are only open till 3pm. Although Apple+Google and even Yelp says they don't open till 11am, I went on a Sunday and there was already people eating inside and online at 10:45am. read more
the banh canh tom cua is the best dish here 4/5 tasty, flavorful, warm, and if you like spicy be careful not to drop too much of the red spicy sauce because it will burn later definitely recommended if youre feeling for hot thick soup the service was quick not many seatings as its a small restaurant recommended to go early and wait ambiance is your typical authentic asian vibe check this spot out! read more

It was my first time every trying this dish and it was very flavorful! We waited approximately 30 min before getting seated, but the staff was very quick with bringing out the dishes. I wanted to also try their egg rolls, but they have sold out of them, so I will definitely be back to try that next time. read more
Visited for the first time at 12:30 on a Sunday & there was a crowd of people outside when we arrived. Walked inside to put my name down on the dine-in waitlist, saw there were only 3 tables inside and soo many takeout orders being prepared. Seeing how popular the place was definitely made me very excited about trying it out! We were seated ~35 mins later and got our food very quickly after! We each ordered a bowl of the banh canh tom cua (shrimp & crab w/tapioca starch udon noodle soup) and shared an order of fried spring rolls. Spring rolls were a 10/10, perfectly crispy on the outside with the yummiest insides that paired perfectly with the lettuce wrap and fish sauce. Highly recommend ordering this as a starter. Banh Canh Tom Cua - so the only other time I've ever had this dish was in Vietnam and it was one of the most unexpectedly delicious dishes I've ever had and I've always wanted to try it again back in SoCal. While this dish at Mai Phung is pretty good, it didn't totally live up to the one I had in Vietnam as there was a slight sweetness to the soup that was missing here. But aside from that, I have no complaints. Soup was nice, thick and flavorful. Noodles (tapioca starch udon noodles) were bouncy, chewy and everything I wanted. I'll definitely be ordering this again. With the seating situation being quite tight though, I will probably be calling in and ordering ahead for takeout next time. read more
Small hole in the wall place that serves soup, crab shrimp and pork Vietnamese udon noodles. You can see all the crab on top. The sauce is sort of thick, which I love. Wait was 10 minutes for a table or 4 which isn't bad. Food came out quick! They close at 3pm for dining in and 7pm for Togo orders. read more
We waited a hour to try this place. Very limited seating I believe 6-7 tables total so if you have a large party I recommend you going to early. We tried their speciality noodle which is #1 on the menu. They were generous with the crab and shrimp. The soup is more thick with cornstarch but this is because the noodles they also use pairs better with it. The eggs rolls was my favorite it was delicious. The noodles it was okay I'm glad I tried it but it didn't wow me away. Also know they charge $1 for water it's not free. Luckily my husband question what the additional $2 charge was on the receipt. Btw we never got our water but they corrected the mistake and apologized. read more

This place is known for their banh canh. Came here on Saturday at noon. Even though there were 2 parties ahead we still waited about 20+ minutes. It's a small restaurant so expect a wait. However, they are efficient. They take your order when you are waiting so as soon as you get seated, the food is prepared. I also got the egg rolls. They used rice paper so it comes out very crispy. It comes with a generous amount of Vietnamese herbs and lettuce. They have chili sauce on the side and it's actually spicy! Add it to everything! read more

Best place to grab some banh canh tom cua (shrimp and crab udon) Be ready to wait in line since theres only 6 tables. They open from 11-3 but its best if you can come about 10-20 before they open to put your name down to be the first group in. Egg rolls here are pretty good too so make sure you grab both dishes. We came here around noon and for a table for 2 bc we waited about 40 mins. You put your name on the paper sign in sheet, they call your name & you place your order prior to be seated. They'll put a check mark next to your name once you order then you have to wait another 5-10 mins before they call your name again and then you can be seated inside. We ordered the banh canh tom cua and egg rolls. The egg rolls came with tons of veggies and fried pork skin as a bonus! We enjoyed both dishes. Banh canh broth was more light than I was used to but still flavorful. Will definitely be coming back. read more

This is my go-to place for Vietnamese Udon/Banh canh in Westminster. The flavor is just right and the noodle soup is very filling. They give a good amount of crab meats which I appreciate. It's 16 bucks a bowl but if you are small eater, you can save some for later as well as the portion is pretty good. Remember to order the egg rolls, you won't regret it. read more
This is THE go-to place for banh canh tom cua (crab soup udon) and bun rieu (tomato-based noodle with pork). Both both are always full of bold flavor, thick, and filled with either the crab meat or pork. I also love how spicy their chili hot sauce is and how "sticky" their fermented crab paste is! IYKYK! The only concern I have is their ability to survive... when phoned in to make to-go orders, they only had three items from the menu left. Not sure if it is because it's a slow day and almost closing time, or if business has been so slow that they have to cut back on their menu options... please stay in business because I can't find anywhere else that has banh canh or bun rieu!! read more

Hands down the best banh canh I've ever had at a restaurant. We got there pretty early when they just barely opened and the line was already out the door. The restaurant is pretty small, only 4 tables. We waited about 45 mins but the wait was totally worth it. The fried egg rolls were so crispy. The banh canh was so flavorful, thick, with fresh noodles, and don't forget to add some spice. Their sate is hella good. They also make pretty good crispy burnt rice with pork floss. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed. read more

I got the most famous dish banh canh tom cua (noodle dish with thicker soup base and crab meat) as well as the egg rolls on the side. If you plan to eat here I would expect to wait at LEAST 30 min. I came around 11:30AM on a Monday (they open at 11AM) and ended up waiting around 40min. I'd imagine others would wait longer on weekends. It looked like takeout was very common though since I saw people coming in and out often. There's only like 4-5 small tables which is why the wait is bit longer, but people eat fast. Each dish is about $10 and one dish can definitely enough to fill a person up, but I decided to get two since I was eating alone and for waiting that long I wanted some variety! The banh canh tom cua was very fragrant and nostalgic for me from when I've had it in Vietnam and the bowl was HUGE. The egg rolls were incredibly crispy and comes with about 10pcs. Be sure to eat lots of greens with them! My whole meal ended up being about $30 after tip and was enough to fill me for dinner too read more
We arrived about 10 minutes before they opened and there was already a small crowd. There's only a few tables inside, but we were lucky enough to be seated immediately! We weren't given any menus, so make sure you know what you want before being seated! The waitress walked right up to us and asked for our order. We got a Banh Canh Cua and I honestly wasn't sure what the menu had but I knew I was craving some Hu Tieu. So I literally just ordered "Hu Tieu" and the waitress looked at me a little funny and asked wet or dry? I answered wet and I ended up with a bowl of Hu Tieu with crab, roasted pork, ground pork, pork skin, BBQ pork, and shrimp. Did I actually know what I was going to get? Absolutely not. Did I love every second of it? 100%!! Also, the Banh Canh Cua was not too thick, but had great flavor! Almost comparable to homemade! I always crave for Vietnamese food when I'm in Orange County, so we decided to check this place out. I didn't realize that Mai Phung was so popular! There was a short wait, so we put our name on the list. I really like their system- before our table is even available, they will call out your name to take your order. Once we were seated, it was a matter of minutes when we received our food. I ordered their infamous banh canh tom cua and my hubby got the mi kho tom cua thit. He also asked for iced Vietnamese coffee and water was $1 extra. The bowls of noodle soup were so delightful. I enjoyed my soup and got to taste his as well. They use real crab meat and giant shrimps in each dish and the noodles are so fresh too! Even his iced coffee was very tasty, but they put too much ice in it. For $4, it was only 3/4 full. Best pho of all times. The flavor is so savory n the rib eye in it is sooo tender. This totally our to go place every Sunday. We love the owner they are very welcoming. Service is amazing n quick. Definitely mama papa store w a feel of home. Come try it for yourself. The seafood udon is amazing too. Yummy read more

Located in a very small plaza so parking might be a hassle during peak hours on weekend. We came around 2PM on a weekday so it was fine; 4 out of the 5 tables were already filled. A lot of customers also picked up to-go orders. We ordered the Banh Canh Tom Cua (shrimp, crab, pork starchy udon noodle soup). Currently, it's $15 a bowl. Serving size is huge so you will not be leaving hungry! Adding the lime wedges & chili sauce, it was a hearty & warm meal. Soup gets watery as it cools down bc of the starch. Nothing too special, esp at $15. read more

I've recently discovered banh canh and I love the version here at Mai Phung! Big tapioca noodles in a thick seafood broth, topped with a generous amount of crab, pork and shrimp. I love adding a squeeze of lime and a generous portion of the chili sauce. The chili sauce is pretty spicy, a little goes a long way, and it makes the dish soooo good. It feels like a soothing bowl of spicy seafoody goodness. read more
