Found this place on my very first visit to the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. I was fascinated by the purple bread and cookies. Ube is what it is called, and Im so glad I tried it. I had the ube cookie, which tastes like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of Trixx cereal. Delicious. The owners are the sweetest and so informative. I come from 2 hours away just for these cookies. I definitely recommend the ube swirl bread also. So sweet and soft and makes a great sandwich or toast. I will be back again next week. read more

From a store that seems to mainly sell tchotchkes, there are occasionally some fresh baked foods. Seems like mainly Saturdays. Anyway, really tasty like something you'd find at a proper French pâtisserie. Matcha Dome Cake: Loved this one the most. Light and airy. The bitter matcha powder is a great contrast to all the sweet stuff underneath. Lots of fluffy sponge cake. Only downside was that that meringue on top tasted a little moist/stale since it didn't shatter like fresh meringue should. Chocolate Royale Petite French Cake: Very dense and rich. Felt like 50% of this was ganache. And soft cake underneath. A perfect pairing with coffee. Mango Mousse with Strawberry: Reminded me of those light fruit cakes from Chinatown. No actual mango slices, but tons of mango flavor in the mousse and filling. The strawberry was a bit more subtle (besides the whole strawberry on top). It was like a very thin layer of jam in the middle next to the mango filling. Almost didn't notice it. read more

It's about time I swing by Maison Verbena once again for not one, but two separate purchases after last Thursday's walk at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. My sweet tooth was ready for some bites of sugar high. And it didn't take long to please the pair of owners by ordering matcha tiramisu and ube puff pastry. While the Ube cream filling was off-the-wall delish, the matcha tiramisu had me in low orbit. The big taste of each pastry will have me coming back for another. But with my strong will power and my wise savings, I'm willing to put my sweet tooth at rest. Hope everyone shall come to Maison Verbena for some outstanding pastries. read more

We live here in SF, and decided to get some local holiday gifts at the Ferry Building. We had looked online, and wanted 4 candles at this store. When we walked in today, one guy was tripping over himself trying to help someone who, even I could tell, wasn't going to buy anything, and that person walked out. We were patiently looking at other items, when another salesperson was so shockingly rude to us, we decided we could buy candles elsewhere. I bought the cookie sampler today, which is four cookies (ube, mango, pandan, and orange chocolate) for about $17.00. They look so pretty and appetizing, but all except ube were underbaked. The mango one was so underbaked, the cookie (or should I call it dough because it wasn't a fully baked cookie) stuck to the paper wrapper in a glob. For $4.25 a cookie, I was really disappointed. Ube was good, though. I also want to note the cookie is more cake-like. No crisp edges or bottoms anywhere. More like cake in a cookie shape. This is my impression from eating the ube cookie. read more

I haven't been to the Ferry Building store, but I stopped in their Napa location today. The Napa location opened about a month ago and is run/owned by a Filipino man, working alongside his brother and sister. Super sweet family. The store is serene and impeccably curated with high quality, local items. I stopped in for some pastries from Acme, as well as the ube crinkle cookies (phenomenal!). I will definitely be going back to explore the store in greater depth and to pick up candles, fragrances, soaps, chocolates, etc. Highly recommend that you check out the Napa location if you're in the area. One brother said that the Osteria will also be opening a location in Napa soon as well. I cannot wait! read more

Had the Dubai Chocolate Croissant which was $14 but man was it good! I was sticker shocked but blown away by the taste and amount of chocolate inside the croissant. The flavor and texture were amazing! I know I'll be back for sure even if it is $14 for one croissant. Yes! It's that good! Unfortunately I did not snap a picture before devouring it. The pastries are from Osteria Verbena which is right next to Madison Verbena. Pastries (except macarons) were half off towards the end of the day which was a sweet bonus. The ube pastry (pretty much an ube cookie) was buttery and soft. The coconut pandan cream puff was nice and light though I wish there was a stronger pandan flavor. During my weekly Saturday farmers' market shopping trip, I stumbled upon a new stand near the south south west entrance to the Ferry Building. The previous business sold small tarts and cakes which didn't pull on my heartstring. Seeing a large display of baked goods, I promptly parked my cart and my eyes started wandering. A few minutes later, I picked a couple of items to try. I then saw some drinks as the kind lady packed my goodies. Then, I went around the corner and saw another attractive counter... well, you get the idea. Not a good idea to shop on an empty stomach. In fact, a chef friend stopped by and I ended up buying him breakfast (ham and cheese croissant) while at it. Before you knew it, I had a small shopping bag and was already thinking about my next trip here. When I got home, I had already bought my planned breakfast and lunch so my pastries would wait for another day. I would get this again. Technically, this review should be for the business name Osteria Verbena since that was the sign above the section where I shopped. I will take a peek at the main store Saturday since they are closed during the early part of the week. I heard some mention that some of the truffles are from that wine country three Michelin place with the initials FL. Will ask more questions when there again. Edit after revisit:. If you are looking for the worst shopping experience and humiliation, please go to this story and the obvious under educated in-civilized owner will guarantee you have that! We were having a wonderful Saturday afternoon experience in the Ferry building and entering this tiny store with all the crowds starting to smell all the candles on the shelves using their glass covering, which is just what you would do when trying to find a nice candle. Then I saw a giant candle and wanted to smell it as well, so I grabbed the glass cover up. Then the cashier friendly told us "we weren't supposed to touch" that specific candle they put together at the shelf. So me and my friend said we were sorry and put the thing back immediately . At the same time, the owner came to us and started to shout behind us "do you not know how to read? It said do not touch!" And we saw the sign, it was a tiny sign embedded at the back and no one would notice at a glance in that crowded, dark environment. And without giving us any chance to react, the owner shouted again to us "get out of my store" with extremely rude tone. As he is a male that is taller and strong than me and my friend who are female, we even started to fear that he will do anything physical to us, so we ran away from the store as soon as possible, it almost look like he at least has a temper issue, I hope that's it with his issues. The way the owner reacted to this little thing was totally inappropriate, humiliating and over. He could just normally tell us this is not for sale and touch, as he should have put the sign bigger, brighter, and at where people can see. What he did was totally unacceptable in this civil world and international city. I hope anyone who can see this could know the things you could be experiencing if ever you enter this rude store. And I could totally say this shopping experience was the worst I've ever had in my entire life. I hope people visiting from the other places to San Francisco would not think bad of this city because of his behavior as a resident. This person should not be allowed to do business or his store should not be in the Ferry Building with all the other adorable stores and staffs. read more

I was browsing the Ferry Building looking for a small gift for my neighbor. I noticed some nice looking lotions displayed and thought a bottle would make an appropriate gift. I wanted to try a few scents but couldn't get the bottles to dispense lotion. The man working in the store snapped at me that if I wanted to try something, to let him know and he would "serve me." I asked for a sample of one of the lotions, thinking he would give me enough to moisturize my hands so I could get a feel for the product and aroma. He opened the bottle and made a tiny little squirt into my palm (to give you a sense, it was the size of one of the stars above. It felt a little insulting, as if had he left it to me to serve myself, I would have been greedy. I decided to take my business elsewhere where I felt more welcome. read more
