I heard of this Filipino owned coffee shop from social media and had to stop by since I was in the area. I got the Malaya signature and really enjoyed how the coffee flavor didn't get lost through the foam, brown sugar, and condensed milk. Not too sweet, well balanced, and you can tell it was made with a lot of care and attention. The real star of the show for me was the Ensaymada. I tried the queso de bola Ensaymada and loved the flavor of the cheese with the sweet bread. The flavor just made so much sense as I ate it. The ambiance is very modern and simplistic, it makes it easy to get work done or chat with friends... I hate it when a coffee shop is super crowded, it's not my cup of tea. The drinks themselves were yummy! We had the Ube Crème and the Malaya Signature. The cream top isn't too sweet and the drinks were exactly what I thought they'd be. The ensaymada was alright, it was good but not like $7 dollars good... I would pull up to a filipino bakery for a bigger one. I tried the original one as a baseline to compare others I've eaten. If you've had ensaymada before, this one is worth skipping. Grab a drink or ice cream instead! I think those are worth the price. read more

I know no ways to mince it in words, but directly to say, you broke my heart. Without further ado let's begin. Malaya (est 07/2025) is a brand new tiny-Philippine inspired cafe in Silver Lake. It's located in a small corner plaza. They serve coffee, matcha, ice cream, and cheese bread ensaymada. Interior design and layout were adorable and spacious, respectively. It's modern and naturally well lit. Also, you will find some Filipino wall decor throughout the cafe. I was in search of a new cafe while driving on Sunset blvd; and much needed coffee refreshment b/c it's a sizzling afternoon. I was warmly greeted by a young Filipina. I perused their quaint modest menu. And decided to get a Cold Brew. Unfortunately, she stated don't have it at the moment and/or not sure when they gonna have it. (Strike no. 1) I was utterly befuddled!! I asked for a cold Latte x whole milk b/c they ran out or don't have half-and-half milk (Strike no. 2). Furthermore, I tried their Queso Ensymada and its quality was subpar (Strike no.3). At that point, she broke my HEART and ended up breaking up with her-coffee shop. :( Sadly, I only had two sips of my latte because it's too sweet for my palate. I left disappointed because I wanted to give my elite yelp blessing to this new coffee shop. The things I liked were service was spot on, free wifi, chill atmosphere and good music. Parking lot is limited, however, plenty of street metered parking. Overall, I had a lackluster experience. I don't see myself coming back for the above reasons. I think the coffee is decent and they have asian inspired flavors such as pandan. Stopped by this spot and absolutely loved my guava paloma non-dairy ice cream. It was sweet, creamy, and a little tart. Perfect for the summer! My cousin ordered the Ube ice cream and also really enjoyed it. For the road I got an Ube Ensaymada which is made by Ensaymada Project. Loved the ube creme and how light and fluffy the bread was. I can see it pairing perfectly well with one of the coffee or tea choices on the menu. Service was friendly. Interior was simple yet intentional. Love the Baybayin Filipino Wall Art and the island touches to this cafe. I look forward to coming back and trying more off the menu. Highly recommend! read more

Finally stopped by Malaya Coffee and I'm so glad I did! The space is super cute and welcoming, and the staff is just as sweet. I tried the vanilla latte with cream top and an ensaymada--both were amazing. I came back the next day for the caramel banana latte and might be obsessed now. Popped in twice for some advertised taho on two separate weekends but there was never any taho available :( the first time we asked about it, the staff didn't seem to know what it was. The second time they said they had just run out (11am). The ube and signature lattes are solid but a bit disappointed that we made the trip out craving taho and left disappointed both times. We ended up going to Gong Gan next door the most recent trip. Small but hip space. One couch, and a few two top tables spread around. read more

New spot alert! We live to see the Filipino representation in LA! Glad this new spot opened up nearby and they have unique matcha flavors! Love that they handwhisk their matcha, made to order! Only complaint is that the mango syrup that they use settles to the bottom so it needs to have a good mix before every sip. Haven't tried their ensaymadas yet but definitely will have to come back! Super cute spot. The vibe here is clean, bright, and minimal! lots of natural light, plants, and warm wood furniture. It feels cozy and calm, perfect for just sitting with coffee or catching up with a friend. The ice cream is really good. The ube coconut is creamy and flavorful, the guava paloma has that tangy-sweet balance and a smooth texture, and the miso caramel is super tasty too (though the two scoops are pretty small). The matcha is not too bitter, just the right earthy flavor. Service was friendly and quick, even though the place was pretty busy. Everyone working there seemed chill and welcoming. Stopped by on a hot Sunday with a group of friends visiting from the Bay and just wanted to give a shoutout to the one-man team holding it down in the shop. My bf and I had the Malaya ice coffee; we both enjoyed it :) The barista was incredibly patient and friendly with everyone despite the nonstop line, and most people had two or more drinks in their orders. He greeted each customer kindly, apologized for the long wait, and never showed any signs of stress--just kept thanking everyone for coming in. The service here is amazing! The person who took my order was so friendly and efficient, and even walked me through all the different ensaymada flavors one by one. They also made sure I knew how to heat them up properly once I got home. I tried the tablea mocha latte and it was so good. A lot of mochas can be too grainy, but this one was smooth, chocolatey, and just the right amount of sweet -- indulgent but not over the top. The ensaymadas were also delicious. The bread was super fluffy and still tasted great even after I reheated them hours later at home. I do think they're a little pricey for what they are, but they're not so easy to find so I don't mind. The vibe of the cafe is vibrant yet elegant, with really nice decor that makes it feel cozy but stylish. I'll definitely be back to try more of their lattes! read more

The service was really kind and helpful, and also pretty quick. I asked for wifi and was just a little shy about it but they were really nice about it. I ordered the pandan matcha and the ube ensaymada. The ensaymada hit! Loved the ube flavor. The pandan matcha.... was not my favorite. I wish it had more matcha in it, and to be honest, the staff seemed like the kind of really nice staff to add some more matcha if I really wanted, I think (don't do that though). I wish the drink was more matcha-y and I could taste the pandan which was sooo good but could've gone for an ounce of a stronger flavor. I'm sorry, but I think that's the only reason I knock this place down a star. I need to come back to try the coffee though! That ube latte looks Soooo good. The cafe layout itself was peeerfeeeect for someone working remotely. Lots of table space, lots of outlets, and surprisingly a lot of sunshine coming in and the place was bright. This Filipino inspired coffee and ice cream shop is such a gem. I've tried the Pandan Matcha, Ube Crème Latte, Strawberry Matcha, and even the Salted Egg and Ube Ensaymadas. The staff is friendly, the space has a calm and welcoming vibe, and there's even parking available. It is a small lot, but I haven't had any trouble finding a spot during my weekend visits. If I could change one thing, I wish they had longer hours throughout the week so I could stop by more often. i love this place! there's a parking lot although it is small. I went on a Tuesday morning at 10 am and it was packed by 11 am. As a coffee shop, it's aesthetically pleasing. But coffee-wise it's lacking a bit. They're using Sightglass' Ethiopian coffee beans, a coffee bean I'm well versed with. Frankly, it left little to be desired. Ethiopian coffees are quite fruity (usually blueberry in scent and flavor) and acidic. These beans were lukewarm and virtually flavorless and lacked any depth or god forbid body. That's an accomplishment given they're using a connicle burr grinder. Like most LA coffee shops, I would say they're hoping no one actually orders anything plain (or black). As we used to say when I was a professional barista, you can hide your mistakes with milk and sugar. I'll give it to them that they're still new and it will be a while before they're able to get up to speed. When I did this for a living it took me 3 months to get extractions right, and I was working with 7 different types of coffee beans from single origin to blends. Speed is a big thing here given they literally let my ice cream sit on a counter while they waited for the rest of my order to be ready before calling me to pick it up. I was hoping the one sitting on the counter wasn't mine. I would guess their milk and sugar drinks are good, but if you're a coffee drinker who drinks coffee because of flavor and depth, you may want to give this spot a pass until maybe a year or two. Give them time to settle in and get their coffee making in order. They fact they're making it work with ONE coffee grinder is commendable if this was a small coffee cart. But it's a shop with an ambitious menu. As previously stated, I would give them time to settle in. But as an opener, this was lackluster. My Order: Espresso: Bodyless, Flavorless, Sad Pour Over: Okay Zero flavor. At the very least not sour nor bitter. But it was basically water. Cortado: Honestly, just sad. Not even worth reviewing. Delicious Filipino inspired coffee! I am a fan of cream top coffee with whole milk and whole lotta sweetness. Very lovely cafe with boutique like ambiance coupled with plants and pothos galore. Sweet coffee is not ideal for my pre-diabetic bod but I can't help treating myself on weekends after a Silverlake reservoir walk or a Pilates stretch class.
