Walked in here at ~8:15am for breakfast. There was not a lot of people yet; we were seated at the bar. After a few minutes, people started trickling down and soon the place was close to being full. I liked the mallorca with ham, bacon, cheese! It was delicious. They looked small but they were filling. The pastries displayed at the window were inviting. If you're dining in, you have to tell your server that you're getting some pastries that are on display then you ask the person at the counter who also serves as the cashier to get them for you. The guava pastry was good. The vanilla bread with strawberry and pineapple/lemon was okay. They looked better than they tasted in my opinion. Payment for everything would be at the cashier after dining. If you're in San Juan, this is a place to try!
One of the classics that are amplified via social media. Here was our experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Old San Juan rules--come early or be ready to walk. Seating: Inside seating, plenty of seating but just gets pretty busy because of how popular this place is. Vibes: Welcome to Old San Juan! Heart of Puerto Rico but also a very touristy spot as well. The attitude changes based on the time of day. When it comes to the early/mid day - brekkie/brunch busy. The spot itself was nothing too flashy just your authentic morning coffee shop with servers busy serving people. Great place to chill, chat, and start up your day. FOOD / DRINKS Mallorca - Regular (Recommend) A mallorca is basically a sweet bread but this one is most known for their ham and cheese. We tried getting their as early as possible but they were backed so we had the regular which was a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet but powdered with sugar. A nice morning boost of energy to start the day. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gotta respect the employees for handling the busy rushes time in and out. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. A must-try Old San Juan experience. You can get mallorcas in other places but the history here is pretty nice. Not trendy, not curated--but deeply rooted in local culture. If you want to understand Puerto Rican breakfast, this is a great place to start. TIPS * Go early to beat the crowd * Tip your servers
Review #1,046 Posted on 4.26.26 We came here on Thursday the 23rd while in San Juan area for my buddies 50th birthday. This spot we had seen on social media a ton for being famous for their Mallorca sandwich, a special type bread, we got the one with bacon & American cheese. Man, I made the mistake of doing the bacon instead of ham, overthought that deal. I tried my buddies with ham n cheese and I think that was way to go. I loved how this spot had that super old school feel of like a diner. You can sit at one of the table tops, or you can do the countertop too, which has tons of seats, we all were able to sit there. I'd 100% recommend this spot, but get the ham n cheese mallorca sandwich, don't overthink it.
Stopped by for breakfast on a Tuesday morning around 8am. It wasn't busy at all when we arrived and we immediately got a table. We ordered two coffees, cheese Mallorca, Swiss Mallorca, coconut macaroon, and Mallorca bread. The coffees were small but mighty. Cheese Mallorcas were delicious and we slightly favored the Swiss version. I'd get it with ham next time. Super simple. Sweet and savory. From the pastry window, we picked up a Mallorca bread with powered sugar which was amazing. The bread was SO soft and fluffy. Very similar to Japanese milk bread. We also got a coconut macaroon which has a bit of lemon flavor to it. Also good, very sweet. I'd definitely come back and highly recommend!
We were recommended this spot by a local - and we are so glad we came to Old San Juan to find it! We arrived just after 8am for good reason, the place fills up so quick! We sat at the bar top for quick service! You must try the famous Mallorca with ham and cheese - this light flufffy pastry like sandwich is delectable. The perfect balance of sweet and savory. Everything was served on paper plates and plastic cups... nothing fancy, just fantastic food and great local coffee. The service was quick, friendly and yes, he spoke little English but it was quite easy to understand as we don't speak Spanish.
What a charming old-school diner. We were staying around the corner and had walked by a few times in the evenings, when they are closed. I had seen recommendations to try the Mallorcas, so we came back early one morning before 8 AM as we had to catch a tour bus. At that hour it was pretty empty, just the waiter, a cashier, a handful of older gentlemen hanging out, and a couple of tourist groups like ourselves. We all ordered Mallorcas, which are basically breakfast sandwiches of soft thin bread rolls (Mallorcas) with powdered sugar, but come in variations with egg, cheese, ham, bacon, etc. Get any of the variants - not the plain ones, which I don't think come toasted - as they crisp them first with the fillings, then sprinkle the sugar. They were pretty good and cheaper than most other breakfasts we tried in the area. The next morning, we even tried to came back, but it was PACKED at 9 AM so we wandered down to El Meson (fast food) and were sorely disappointed at their version of Mallorcas (to be fair it was dirt cheap there), so I would stick to Cafe Mallorca but COME EARLY! Ambience was old school diner with a long counter and vintage photos of Mallorca and Old San Juan. I wish they would use real plates and cutlery instead of the disposable stuff we found prevalent in PR. Oh and the coffee is nothing special so you fill have to get your espressos or lattes somewhere else.... Oh and the bakery case was filled with what looked like delectable treats but unfortunately we did not get to try those (other than the mallorcas)... next time!
Went from 5 Stars to 1 real quick. Although there are full trays of pastries in the window, they refuse to sell us Mallorca to go. You can only eat on the premises; they are too busy for take-out. Whatever that means. But there are no seats. Does not matter. So we waited and sat at the end of the counter. Where people standing to our left were picking up their to-go orders. No kidding. Plus no air. Server moves like a sloth. Got our order of 4 Mallorcas and 2 coffees wrong. Plus they nuke the coffee. To pay, you are back in 1975 on a long line with the cashier marking every sale in a marble book. And she moves like a snail. All the charm is gone. Mallorca bread is delicious, but it just. Ain't. Worth it.
The sandwich was a 20/10. I saw it in a video and said huh? A what? But you must go try it for yourself. The dining room can get crowded, its seat yourself and then get served, but service was rather quick. Think casual dining. You check out on your way out where you can grab pastries to go as well.
Must visit while in PR for a quick authentic breakfast experience. Beware, there is usually a long line, however it moves super quick due to the quick service. Their breakfast sandwiches are made right on the spot with fresh mallorcas. Their lemonade and orange juice are also to die for! Freshly squeezed! They are also pretty cheap, in comparison to other options in the area. The hype around this place is definitely worth it, making it a must try!
This is quite literally the best surprise I've ever experienced. This constantly comes up as as a must try when in San Juan and there's a line out the door to prove it. Inside, it's a typical cafeteria type restaurant and the poor server we had had a lot of tables to take care of so service was slow but the sandwich is WELL worth the wait. I tried the egg ham and cheese Mallorca. Delicious!!
Foods are great it's a mom and pops place very popular here in San Juan Puerto Rico but you need to stretched out your patience waiting to get your order and for your orders to be served as well only 2 servers getting in all the orders and serving for the price is just right food is good cleanliness i would say 2 stars service is 1 star foods are 4 stars even mom and pops breakfast and brunch place need to step up just saying but of-course first time visitors need to try this
We arrived at 11:00 am on a Friday morning. Since all of the tables were full we sat at two barstools at the bar. A server slid some menus down to us and by 11:15 we were still waiting (and attempting to get the servers attention). When a table opened up, we asked if we could move to it. They said yes. We then flagged down a server to say we were ready to order. He said ok and kept walking. After being ignored for another 15 min, we finally were able to place an our order. We both got coffee, juice and a Mallorca con queso huevo y Jamon. Mine did not have egg. The server did get us another one. Overall the food was ok and the service was so bad that I can't recommend this place nor will I return

This place was slammed & for great reasons! This place is a must go for breakfast if you are in old San Juan! I would definitely recommend ordering a traditional dish you will not be disappointed :) read more
Do not leave Puerto Rico without devouring... I mean eating a Mallorca! Food: oh my Mallorca! I ordered the egg cheese ham Mallorca with a papaya smoothie and I was struggling to finish my delicious breakfast. The Mallorca have a generous layer of powdered sugar on top which does make eating messy even with a knife and fork.The Mallorca prices are comparable to a NYC breakfast sandwich. Ambiance: nothing special, think diner meets Chinese take out joint seating Service: nice courteous and the food was served quickly All in all if you're in Old San Juan and want to try a Mallorca might as well do so at a place with Mallorca in their business name! read more

Love this place everytime I come I go here for breakfast. Its affordable and filling . For $4.50 you can get Bacon,sausage and eggs, buttered bread and coffee. It's also bakery with all.kinds of great baked goods. This is a gem on the heart of old san Juan. read more

If you visit old San Juan stop by here for breakfast! Get a Mallorca which are amazing! The OJ is soooooo good! And even the coffee is good! Cheap and delicious definitely a must! read more

If ever in Old San Juan, go to La Mallorca, they said. Order a Mallorca, they said. They were right. "Sandwishes" are granted here. Menu offered an option for a ham, egg & cheese Mallorca, but substituting bacon for ham was no problemo. So, bacon egg and cheese it was. So so SO freakin delicious. Coffee on point, too. read more

Mallorca with ham and cheese was delicious, it was topped with powdered sugar! The cafe con leche was amazing. We also got eggs with sausage, which was very good. We didn't have to wait at all for a table of 4 on a Saturday at 10am. The food is very cheap $20 for 4 people. read more

I will say this much every time i visit this amazing institution in old san juan, i feel as if i am tepping in to a cafeteria from the 1950's. The staff wears a black and white uniform with vests very professional. They all seem to be either family or perhaps they have been working here since the place opened. I ran into this place thanks to my cab driver ( El Chino) who owns a taxi in the area and swore to me he has been eating at this place for a very long time. Not to be rude but he is a very big guy and from the looks of it he can eat like a football player. To be specific the Mallorca bread is the main attraction at this joint.. They have all kinds of breakfast items, eggs, bacon, pancakes and different types of pastries. Out of all the pastries you have to ask which have guayaba inside cause those are the most delicious treats to be had with the best coffee only they can brew. Getting back to he Mallorca is a delicious treat that is not always available. You can have it plain or with the filling of your choice. The bread is warm and it is lightly dusted with confectioners sugar and its fluffy and buttery. Literally it melts in your mouth, the locals like to order it with ham and cheese and some even add eggs in the sandwhich. I had it with ham and cheese and it was awesome. Dont worry about your butter intake here just enjoy the moment. I guess the shortest way to put it is like eating a sweet cubano sandwhich on a nicely toasted mallorca bun. Perfect little diner for a quick yummy bite! We sat at the bar and I just ordered a simple ham and cheese press. The service was excellent and we got our food fairly quickly. They also have tons of sweets if you're looking for a good pastry and coffee. Definitely will be back! read more

We came here for a nice relaxing breakfast. My sister and I had the ham & cheese mallorca and cafe con leche. They took a bit to come take our order and the cashier lady was a kind of rude when we went to pay. However, the food and coffee was very good! The Milojas pastry was heaven! Definitely try their pastries. They have a good assortment to choose from. The Mallory as are obviously very delicious, warm, sweet, and buttery. Will definitely be back for breakfast. The waiters were extremely polite. read more
Really cute old-school diner style restaurant specializing (I think, according to their name at least) in mallorcas. It's like PR's version of a croissant breakfast sandwich, and kind of tastes like a really crispy flapjack - I got my workout of the day in trying to cut it into manageable pieces. I had mine with ham, egg, and cheese; the sandwich came with one slice of Kraft and maybe two slices of ham, as well as a thin fried egg. Dusted in powdered sugar, so if you're hopeless like I am you'll get it everywhere as you eat. Cafe con leche got the job done, but tasted like something I could make with some Folger's at home. As sad as that meal sounds, I really enjoyed it and thought it was a charming place to get a cheap, quick breakfast. read more

Our hotel told us about this place. Looked really old school inside. The server behind the counter was perfectly helpful and polite. I was grateful given Puerto Rican food is completely foreign to me. Since we only wanted an afternoon snack, we had cafe con leche, cheese flan, and mallorca with ham cheese and egg. First time for me having mallorca and I thought I heard angels singing for a few seconds. Just perfect blend of sweet and savory and soft and crispy... Prices were very fair. Their restaurant title lives up to what it's famous for - Mallorca. If you were to dine here, remember to try Mallorca! I got the egg, ham and cheese Mallorca and it was so effing good! I could eat it everyday! Mallorca all day errday! Ps - if possible, avoid busy hours coz the lines were a little crazy when I got there. read more
Cafetería Mallorca, Old San Juan April 24, 2016 Visited the Cafeteria after reading some incredible reviews and recommendations from friends. The locale will not disappoint. Parking is at a premium and hard to find near the place. The cafeteria has been around for years and locals flock to the place faithfully. When we visited the place was full to capacity so we managed to get three seats at the bar. The was a trumpet player playing giving the place a bohemian vibe. Our server, Jose, was ok; not too friendly and talkative. He took our order and left. Every time we asked a question about the menu he seemed bothered. The food was great and tasty. The portions were great and the breakfast was fulfilling. The price was affordable for Old San Juan. Long lines for pay as the waitstaff won't take payment. The pastries were amazing. The vibe of the place is lively and fun. Would I go back??? Probably not. It was a one time deal!!! read more

Wow! This place is one of the best breakfast I have ever here in PR. Mallorca with cheese ham and egg is highly recommended. They also added white powder on the top of Mallorca. You would expect long lines for this place. read more

On our last day in Puerto Rico we stopped in for breakfast. Great service and great food! First time having a Mallorca and it was great. If we are ever in Puerto Rico again we will definitely stop in. read more
