One of our favorite breakfast cafes. Perfect place to take teenage boys with an endless appetite!

Normally love this place. Today was different. I went in early and was met by one of the most hostile "hostesses" I've ever encountered. She was about 60 with short, heavily dyed black hair. She asked how many and I said, " Two please." She said, "Is everybody in your party here?" with a scolding tone and kind of a snarl on her face. I said my friend would be along any moment to which she said she couldn't seat me then, turned and walked away. I sat down for a minute in a waiting area then decided this was stupid. I asked another hostess if I can just sit down and have coffee while I wait for my friend. Hostess Ratchet flew across the room and scolded me again. I looked her in the eye and said, "why can't I sit down and have coffee while I wait for my friend?" In a huff she grabbed a menu and walked away but this time I gathered she was seating me. The whole way, over her shoulder, she was fuming and even insulting to me. As soon as I sat down at a table for two, she grabbed the other place setting and stormed off. My friend showed up about 30 seconds later and I waved to him. Eventually a waitress replaced the setting and gave him a menu. Final note on the bad part of the experience. While we sat and ate breakfast, I noticed Hostess Ratchet pulled two waitresses toward her and was literally pointing at my friend and I. The other waitresses were taking furtive glances at us. The food is good and I've never had a bad waitress. However, this angry Hostess (seems like management or owner) made the experience so bad I won't recommend it. Again the tone was the least friendly or helpful tone imaginable. If you treat your customers like they are a burden then you should expect them to go away as I will. They are always busy and so don't need my business but this was just such a shocking display of the opposite of customer service I felt I had to post a review. read more

Excellent! I had the eggs with mushrooms, onions and sausage. The bran muffin was huge! I got the cinnamon roll to go, it could feed 10! It's gigantic. Very delicious and I can't wait to try lunch on the weekday. read more

I have been to the Maltby Cafe quite a few times and the food has always been good. The only problem is that everyone wants to eat there so there is often a wait. (not a necessarily a bad thing) The last time I was there I got an omelet and they happily gave me a huge side of beautiful veggies instead of potatoes. It was excellent! Love the service. Maltby's is my ultimate breakfast dream come true. Thick slices of bacon and stacks of pure happiness. There is a bit of a wait, and parking can be a bit tricky but it's completely worth it once the food arrives. read more

We had lunch at the Matby Cafe. It took a long time for someone to take our order. We ordered French dip sand and it was very disappointing. The beef was Big pieces of meat with no cheese. We did not know that was extra and you had to order. I like thin beef and always have cheese. We had a hard time getting our waitress attention. She was very busy. Nice we not feel she had time for us. We ordered the boysenberry pie to go and it was outstanding! I would not suggest the French dip unless you want to eat a dry roast. We will order desert to go the next time and pass on lunch. read more

This is one of our favorites. The marionberry pie is amazing! Everything on the menu taste great and we've tried half of them.

Best breakfast place around. Our favorite used to be the Woodinville Cafe. This trumps it by a mile. The food is perfectly cooked breakfast fare, and comes in ridiculously enormous portions. You could order one of their cinnamon rolls and easily feed four (I'm not exagerating.) There is one huge downside however.... the waits can be very, very long. You can call ahead to get in line. If you don't, you could be facing a two hour wait on a busy day. read more

I used to be a big, big fan of the Maltby Cafe, but no longer: I'm afraid it is well past it's prime... and we won't be going back. We have gone there several times on Monday recently for breakfast, each time hoping the last visit was an anomaly... and each time I have felt absolutely ripped off for the price we have paid. The portion size used to be enormous and you could always count on having enough to take home for later - this is no longer the case, at least not on our last few visits. Example: "Montana Potatoes" have always been a favorite of mine and I used to adore the ones served at the Maltby; but the name needs to be changed here to "Rhode Island Potatoes": the portion (mostly potatoes, of course) is about 1/2 of what it used to be and the poor spuds and other ingredients are now all but drowned in oil. I mean, how expensive would it be to toss in a few more tubers? You could make up the "extra cost" by cutting back on the oil... ahem. Throw a brace of indifferently cooked eggs off to one side, add one quality-varies-each-visit biscuit... and there you have it: $11.95 please. Uhhh, I don't think so. I don't know at which Maltby Cafe other reviewers are eating to get the big portions, but it isn't the same Maltby Cafe I've been frequenting... not anymore, based on my recent experiences. There is a reason they are voted Best Breakfast in Western Washington year after year after year. Great service, huge portions, great mimosas!! Worth the wait or a fun "stay-cation" breakfast spot when you take the day off. I always bring out of town guests here. read more

Food is great as always, but the portions continue to be excessive....take half to go! A long wait for a table by 10am on a Sunday morning. Highly recommend the biscuits & gravy with eggs and sausage on the side. Not authentically Southern, but pretty good for the West Coast. read more

This place was rated "best breakfast in Washington"? Maybe "biggest breakfast in Washington." Yeah, we had left overs for 4 days, but definitely not the best. The Dish, on Leary Ave, has a much better hollandaise sauce, and better Eggs Benedict all-around. We (3 of us) drove one hour, round-trip, from Seattle to discover that we have better breakfast just down the road. read more

First thing to know about the Maltby Cafe: there is ALWAYS a wait..but the food is well worth it. I ordered the baja omelette & ate the whole thing! However. I do have a complaint. From outside it doesn't really look like a resturant at first, but the food was pretty good, fast service and the employees were friendly, i had the blueberry pancakes, the coffee is not too bad, plus they have pictures of famous people who stopped by on the walls and given it's location it's too hard to find this place. read more

the info for this place says no wheelchair access...not true! It's not ADA, but there is access around the back of the building. We came out here with a large group for fall pumpkin harvesting and were greatly anticipating an amazing meal at Maltby's beforehand. Here's the deal...it's good, yes. Portions are huge. And indeed the cinnamon roll is notable. However, the much chatted about potatoes are NOT as some reviews say "crispy." They are super super soft. Like..have been cooking in a vat for hours soft. And are heavily coated in some sort of margarine/oil, with no seasoning. If that's your thing: you'll really enjoy them. They are not my thing. The cinnamon roll is plate-sized. We split one between a group of 10 as a breakfast 'appetizer' and that small portion was plenty. It is very very sweet. Like...makes your teeth hurt. And not very cinnamon-y. Again, if that's your thing: you'll LOVE them. They are not my thing. But I'm not too into sweets. Everything else is pretty typical. Reports from the group were that the pancakes are 'good-hard to screw up a pancake' and things like omellettes and eggs were 'about like anywhere else.' The staff were all lovely and very accommodating of our large group. The wait was not bad at all for our group size (10); i do know that for a basic group of 4 at 10am on a Sunday was 40mins. If you're in Maltby it's a good place for breakfast. I wouldn't recommend a special trip from Seattle. read more

This place is great. I have only had breakfast there but the management and staff pay attention to every detail. The food is wonderful , big portions. Though they are good, they are quality. Of course the cinnamon rolls are the biggest I have seen and made homemade everyday. They serve great coffee and the atmosphere is pretty unique. The wait for this café is well worth it! The ambiance, wait staff and menu is amazing! I've been here on multiple occasions. This café is tucked slightly underground with a cozy atmosphere. The wait staff is very friendly right off the back and even tempts you with their DELICIOUS & HUGE cinnamon roll right from the start; they have a few cinnamon rolls right at the sign in area. They are delicious!! Their menu is an eye-full. There are many options for scrambles, omelettes, and waffles to please everyone. I ordered the Nardone Fruit Waffle Special and it was a crispy yet moist waffle with a large serving of delicious fresh mixed berries and amazing homemade crème fraiche. The portion for the waffle is very large and can be easily toasted for the next day for leftovers. When I crave waffles, I always come here! read more

We had to visit the Maltby Cafe again because it is here. We started with the cinnamon bun.....Yumm! Each of us had different breakfast dishes, all huge and delicious. I ordered the Montana bacon and eggs. The best bacon I have ever had. Real tasty and thick. Everyone else took a taste and agreed. I may go back for a cinnamon bun with a side of bacon. Best breakfast in WA state. No need to get crazy with the menu either, all you need is some scrambled eggs, a little bacon and ONE (only one, mark my words) of their ridiculously delicious, MASSIVE cinnamon rolls. They're out of control. I love the Maltby Cafe. The cafe itself, by the way, is an a beautiful old schoolhouse. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd want on a Saturday morning or after picking out a Christmas tree on a cold December day. Anyone that gives Maltby lower than a 5 star rating is cynical, generally unhappy, pessimistic and just doesn't "get it". I feel sorry for them. read more

I defy any claims of better breakfast served in the Greater Seattle area. Service is outstanding, every employee welcomes you w/ a nice warm greeting. Your coffee & water is filled w/out having to ask. Soy option is avail. The Californian Scramble was hit the spot! Thick baccon that isn't overcooked, creamy avocado slices, & hearty tomato pieces. All scrambles come w/ red potatoes in a spear shape that are to die for. Gluten free bread is avail. & their blackberry jam is deliciously sweet. read more

The only thing I don't like about this place is everyone is catching on to how Amazing it is. I live 3 min away and it takes 30 min or more to get a table. They do do take out too if you call it in. These positive reviews must be coming from the quantity equals quality crowd. Lets say that I didn't walk in with high hopes. I'd been burned by several breakfast joints around here, particularly the ones where much of the talk is about portion sizes. However, my boyfriend had had this place recommended to him by numerous people, so we decided it was worth a shot. When we got in the place was packed. There are rows of benches clogging an already cramped hallway so that the people trying to leave, the people trying to get to their table, and the people trying to check in are all milling through the same small space. The woman checking people in said it would be about 35 minutes so we decided to walk around for a bit. It was a dreary day, and due to the location, there isn't much to do while you wait. We decided to get some coffee, but as soon we picked up our cups they called us in. The quick turnaround was a pleasant surprise and no one was upset that we were bringing in outside drinks. We took our seats and my boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak and I ordered one of their potato dishes. The wait for the food wasn't bad and the orange juice was good so my expectations were rising. Looking around at the other tables the food certainly looked good. Then we started to eat. I sliced open my biscuit to get the butter going. It was thick and dense. The butter barely made a dent as it tried to seep down into the crumbs. I took a bit of the potato dish and thought, this is okay...just okay...forgettable even. The first few bites all you taste is cheese, which is better than the later bites where all you taste is under-seasoned, undercooked potatoes. I tried the scrambled eggs. They were the rubbery, not fluffy sort, but at least they weren't watery. They weren't seasoned at all. I bit into the biscuit, still no real flavor, just heavy and dry because the butter couldn't soak past the top layer. I tried a bite of the chicken fried steak and all I tasted was the gravy which was overpowering to the point where I couldn't taste the meat. The staff was nice so I might be willing to give another star for that, but its a long drive and for most a long wait for mediocre food, so I think I'll let the 2-stars stand. We left disappointed and decided that it just wasn't worth the hassle to give them a second chance. read more

Great lunch spot after Flower World. A little confusing to go downstairs, but cozy once you're down there. Pretty stuffy on hot day and a bit noisy with the open theme. The staff is all extra friendly and helpful to the first time diner. We had club and meatloaf sandwiches and they were huge ( doggie bag huge ), the fries are very tasty but just not crisp - even when ordered crisp. Fries should be called slices instead of fries, but have really good flavor. Super selection on the menu, hope to be back for a hearty breakfast. read more

Ive been here multiple times each time the food was good! But the last two times I've been the food wasn't of quality... I get the same thing every time, the biscuits and gravy. The last two times the potatoes were hard and not cooked thoroughly and the biscuits(which is why I got the dish in the first place) where not even edible. The biscuits were very hard on the edges, by the time I cut the edges off there's hardly anything left. It's as if the biscuits were previously frozen and not defrosted all the way.... Thought these were freshly made each day? Disappointed .... Especially when u wait so long to even get a table and the food wasn't up to par... Double disappointment .... :/ read more

I've been here many times because it is close to our house and my mom likes meeting me for breakfast. Everyone raves about it but it's not really that good. Tons of potatoes on the plate, filler. It's good but I give it a 2 because it's supposed to be so much better. Eggs are eggs. There isn't any special must have here that sets it apart. I guess people love their large cinnamon rolls. They are good but that can't be a good reason to call it awesome. They are just big... Cost 2x as well. read more

First and last time going here. Poor service, everyone was nice but weren't very attentive. Food is way overpriced, I wouldn't have minded if it has tasted good. Too bland and salty and greasy. I ate half of my chicken fried steak and couldn't finish it due to the salt and grease, didn't eat the bland eggs, or the greasy bland potatoes. Felt sick for the next two hours. Seeing how popular this place is, it was quite a letdown. :( read more

What can we say other than that this place is wonderful! We are fortunate to live nearby but have actually met people from nearby states who tell us they try to stop here for a great meal if they are in this part of the country. The service is efficient and friendly and any dish we have ordered is excellent. There are Lines to get in at normal breakfast and lunch hours, but Coming a little earlier or later is usually helpful. Be prepared for huge portions. read more
