Thank to Amanda and Gabby for the best service we have had in years. We came as a family to Mama Cella's to send off our nephew to the Navy and it was his last meal. Mama Cella's exceeded our expectations in every single way. The food, service, and ambiance was everything we could have wanted and more. I will repeat myself the food was so delicious and we haven't tasted authentic Italian food like that in I can't even remember but it's been too long. The restaurant's recipe for the pizza dough and sauce were stellar. Thank you so much for making our experience so unforgettable and special. We will see you again very soon. Love, The Mendoza family

We ordered takeout from Mama Cella's while in the area, and were so delighted by every delicious item! I'm still thinking about the Penne Alla Cardinal weeks later. And that pizza crust was so chewy in the best way! Service was prompt. Excited to go back and dine inside some time soon to experience the full ambiance.

It took a long time for the hubs and I to make a decision on tonight's dinner (how did adulting become one long and frustrating back-and-forth on evening dining?) We found Mama Cella's on, like, page 6 of 9 on Yelp, and ordered with a sense of urgency, given they were closing in 34 minutes. I couldn't pass up the Penne Alla Cardinal ($19), and my husband opted for his go-to Italian meal: penne pasta with marinara sauce and a meatball ($14, plus $6 for the meatball.) We both also added a side salad ($5) because vegetables. Fifteen minutes later, we were back at the hotel with two piping hot bowls of pasta, a packet of garlic bread and small containers of greens and croutons. The salad, though basic, was refreshing and tasty. I never feel like I'm given enough salad dressing (ranch, in this case), but that could be me and my need to over-sauce salads, effectively canceling out any nutrition coming from the veggies. But y'all, that Penne Alla Cardinal? Insanely good. You wouldn't think that something that looks so simple - sun dried tomatoes and a tomato cream sauce - could taste so good, but it was incredibly yummy. I had to force myself to slow down and chew to stop myself from inhaling the plate in record time. And the garlic bread was the perfect side for the pasta. The bread was saturated with butter and garlic, slightly crispy and slightly chewy. I got my hand slapped trying to snag one of my husband's pieces of bread. Speaking of the husband, he was in his happy place, chowing down on the penne and the meatballs, which he said were really good, some of the better meatballs he's had in a while. We both really enjoyed the meal, and he said the staff was friendly and welcoming when he walked in to pick up our order, which we appreciated, especially since they were just about ready to close for the night. We're going to keep this restaurant on rotation for those nights where we don't want to cook and maybe want to eat before we make the drive back down home after a day at the office. Though maybe not too often, because it's not the most economical of meals. But it's worth it!

Our first meal there, Saturday lunch on a whim. I love the fact that it's a family run place. Service was so friendly and informative and the food was just wonderful. I had the lasagne (easily could feed 4 people - took home a bunch) and my guy had the chicken parm sandwich. Both were really delicious. Tyler took such good care of us, even giving us a meatball to try, which was fabulous. Tiramisu for desert was light and tasty. We will be back!

Nice little family run Italian restaurant in Rancho Bernardo that my friend recommended to us. It's small so it's best to make reservations in advance. We were lucky to snag their last table on a Friday evening. Service was stellar. Everyone was friendly and warm. We were checked on often and our dishes arrived in a timely manner. The food was hit or miss. I ordered the clam linguine with spicy red sauce. It was on the heavy side and loaded with clams, but a bit plain. The clams didn't taste fresh. We also ordered the chicken parmigiana and that was pretty good. The chicken was moist and crispy. The garlic bread was delicious. Really enjoyed that. We ordered the tiramisu for dessert. It's one of my favorite desserts but theirs was pretty plain. And I didn't like all those shaved almonds on top. Overkill and that's all I was tasting over a plain tiramisu.

My husband's family's been living in Rancho Bernado since the 80s and finally tried out this restaurant that has been there as long. It did not disappoint! I'm just gonna talk on behalf of my husband and my mother-in-law and my son dishes. My husband got the lasagna and he said it's the best lasagna he has had (outside of Italy)! My mother-in-law got the eggplant Parmesan and she said it was fantastic! My son got the cheese pizza and he loved it! My husband tried the pizza and said it was so good. The service was excellent. waitress is one of the owners or is part of the family business. Very cute little restaurant not a lot of seating but very cute and quaint! :) So I was disappointed because there wasn't a gluten-free pasta available most Italian restaurants these days will have the option since there's a lot of people that can't have gluten so I was kind of disappointed about that. The only thing that I can get on the menu was the salad with some grilled chicken and it was OK I wouldn't say anything special at all. But my family did enjoy their meals so this review is mostly, based on their experience and not my personal own, so I personally probably won't go back there because there's nothing really special for me to eat there because I am gluten-free and I also don't eat meat but a lot of other Italian restaurants I can always find some thing like gluten-free pizza or I can find gluten-free pasta to eat

I ordered chicken parm to go for $24. It took about 25 minutes and was ready when I arrived. The chicken appeared to be filleted. It lacked flavor and was disappointingly thin for the price. There was hardly a full-sized serving of pasta, and the sauce lacked flavor. The garlic bread was about 3 x 2 inches per piece. Meh . I was excited to try this place since I live in the neighborhood but for the price, it was very disappointing. I won't be back:-(.

The size of the restaurant really shows just how much love they prepare the food with. The quality of the food prepared is excellent. The best seller on the menu is the Antipasto salad if you look at the menu. The salad is a best seller for a reason, it's excellent. When I visited most people ordered the salad along with pasta entrees, chicken entrees and other Italian dishes. My group shared the Antipasto, Penne Pasta with meat sauce, Chicken Parmesan, Meat ravioli and Shrimp Fra Diavolo. All of the dishes are excellent in taste, freshness and flavor. I found the prices to be excellent for the portion size. The service was excellent and the dining room was small, and welcoming.

Ask the Community - Mama Cella's

Is there a private room for 15-20 people?

It doesn't appear that there is. It's a small place with the single dining area. Buon appetito!

Does Mam Cella's offer gluten-free pasta, bread or pizza?

From what I see and have read ...not an option.

Does Mama Cella's take reservations? I have a party of 12.

Not sure but they only have one space that would accommodate that many people.

Now onto the food - I love a pasta with a creamy flavorful sauce, and Cesarina always delivers on that! I love doing the build your own pasta option, where you get to choose your pasta shape (mafalde is my personal favorite), your sauce (these rotate out throughout the year, but my 3 favorites are the boscaiola, funghi, and the tartufona [truffle]), and your topping (I will say I wouldn't recommend the meatballs, but any of the cheese toppings are lovely). They also provide delicious complementary bread with marinara sauce for dipping! For dessert, if you order the homemade tiramisu, they make it for you at the table and it is so fun and delicious. The pasta is well done, and the staff was genuinely wonderful--friendly, attentive, and welcoming. That said, for the prices, I expected a lot more. It feels significantly overpriced for what you're getting. The biggest disappointment was the manager, who came across as extremely pretentious and a little too impressed with himself. It definitely took away from an otherwise enjoyable experience. Good Italian food and great staff, but for the price and overall attitude, I'm not sure I'd go back

My oldest ordered the salmon salad, and the creamy dressing was light, fresh, and full of flavor. The salmon portion was on the smaller side but cooked perfectly. My youngest got a "small" order of spaghetti Bolognese (there's no kids' menu), and she cleaned her plate. We also ordered the house bread, which our server explained is baked fresh to order, so it took a little extra time--but it was worth the wait. The seasoned olive oil dip was incredible, and the butter was rich and creamy. The only thing I personally missed was a side of balsamic vinegar. The drinks were just as impressive: a refreshing lavender mocktail for my oldest, a beautifully presented strawberry lemonade for my youngest, and their take on an Aperol Spritz for me. All three were refreshing and a perfect complement to the meal. Great food, wonderful service, and a spot we'll happily return to!

We substituted the tagliatelle ragu with pappardelle pasta since we already had fettuccine and I liked that a lot. When the pasta came out, our server asked if we wanted cheese on the pasta to which we said yes, and then he forgot to bring us cheese so we had to ask the hostess standing outside. Nothing was necessarily bad. it was just surprisingly bland. For a dish that's usually rich and comforting, this one felt forgettable. The pesto was enjoyable, and I appreciated that it wasn't overly acidic. Beyond that, it didn't really stand out. The cocktails were good, the service was fantastic, and the complimentary limoncello cake was delicious.
