Delicious Meatball with crab meat vermicelli soup; Light, soothing and comforting. Shredded pork with bean curd. Many places make this dish, but Shanghailander makes a better one. The whole steamed fish was nicely seasoned, light and nice texture of the fish. We also tried the fried pumpkin pancakes. Hot, crispy and perfect sweetness. The service was mixed, but not in a bad way. The server was definitely warmer to another 'regular' customer, always joking with her but more serious and subdued with us. The manager was very friendly. Overall, no complaints. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the Stewed Duck Soup Noodle. The Crab Meat With Dry Noodle (one of my favorite dishes I tried in Shanghai) was admittedly a bit of a letdown. Overall, our experience here was positive one. Service was friendly, and the food came out surprisingly fast. The space itself is on the smaller side, but the ambiance is nice and intimate. This restaurant has a large variety of items on their menu, so I decided to test their staples with an order of Chicken Fried Rice which was about $17 after tax and tip at the time of this review. Opening the to-go container, I found a pretty decent portion of Fried Rice. With a mix of peas, carrots, egg, and chicken, there was enough variety to give different flavors. However, The ratio of rice to other ingredients was about 80-20. Because of this ratio, the dish was heavy in an unnecessary way. At $17, the price to portion was pretty good overall. But if I had it my way, I would have wished for just a bit more chicken. Tastewise, the fried rice was overall pretty good all things considered. All of the vegetables tasted freshly prepared and had a sweet snap to them. Combined with the savory rice, it balanced out pretty well. The rice itself had a light, salty flavor and held its own pretty well without any soy sauce. As for the pieces of chicken, the meat was pretty moist and had a medium-firm chew to them. The chicken definitely anchored the dish and I wish I had more of it. The Chicken Fried Rice at Dumpling House was pretty tasty overall. Nothing about the dish was bad per-se. However, the imbalanced ratio of ingredients to rice and the the higher price point compared to other restaurants in the area made me second-guess ordering this particular dish again. I would give this spot a solid three out of five and would probably choose to order something else next time I visit. If you're looking for a no-frills chicken fried rice and are making a stop in the Arcadia area, Dumpling House is pretty solid.
