Swung by Mama's Grill tonight. Hadn't been there in a while, as it's further east on Route 32 than I typically traverse. Good spot to get roughly half your kicks, especially during a winter storm. It was actually my second time there during such inclement conditions and they were open for business both times. Nice track record, as far as dependability and adhering to the hours of operation goes. The place has nothing to do with Vicki Lawrence's teeth, so if that's what you were expecting going in, prepare to be let down. If a better than what you'd expect to score at a diner meal is what you're after, you could do much worse. The menu is laminated, extensive and not illustrated. So, no "this looks tasty". You're going to have to break out the old imagination skills; good practice for we, the too cool for Sesame Street crowd. Despite only being here a half dozen times to date, I've already managed to find my go-to selection. It's the N.Y. strip sandwich. Ok, maybe that screeching sound is my imagination skills slamming on their brakes. Don't hate. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find a decent steak (read my lips: steak, not cheesesteak) sandwich on the starboard side of town. At $8.99 including crinkle cut fries, Mama shalt not disappointeth. I've never used the word succulent to describe a sandwich, yet I brandish it this evening as my adjective of choice. Tender, juicy and oh so yum. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Vicki Lawrence could handle this particular steak sandwich without her teeth. No tenacious bulldog, trying to wrestle a sock from its owner's grasp, dragging all the fixings along with it. Just minimal effort chomps 'n swallows, without the "who are they trying to kid?" Salisbury aftertaste. You also get a complimentary loaf of warm bread, with cinnamon butter. Like I mentioned earlier, the menu is plentiful. Breakfast, lunch, dinner ... maybe even a few secret meals to which we storm travelers are not privy. As a relatively no frills breed of night owl, my only two gripes with Mama G.: a.) Pepsi products and b.) "Y u no 24 hours?" Diners are supposed to be open 'round the clock. I don't know where that's written. Not on the outskirts of Williamsburg, evidently. Cozy. Well lit. We stopped for a quick bite on the way to an event and weren't overly impressed. It's not the worst place I've been to, but I don't plan on ever coming back. Our food was just very greasy and the burger I had was definitely a pre-packaged, probably not all meat, frozen patty, which is the worst kind of burger. It's a roadside diner that serves breakfast anytime so they have that going for them. The place was clean and the portions were big enough. I had something that I can't remember the name but it was hash browns, two eggs with toast and country fried steak it was really good. Look, this place isn't going to serve you avocado toast and eggs Benedicte but that's ok. That's not who they are or who they are trying to be. It's a good diner on your way to or from Cincinnati. Mama's Grill is not a bad restaurant by any means, but it's not the best either. It is what you think it is and that's a nice hometown restaurant where the food is above average, the wait staff is great and most nights you will be greeted by the owner at some point who takes great pride in his establishment and in customer service. My personal suggestion if eating here is trying the "old fashioned Kentucky hot brown" it's not a healthy meal for your heart but it's a perfect remedy for a cold day in December. The only thing I can say really negative about this place is that it's menu is comparable to a small novel. I know people enjoy a variety but my simple mind would prefer a smaller menu so I'm not spending 10 minutes trying to figure out what I want. We were meeting some friends there and weren't planning on staying so I ordered ahead a sausage egg and cheese biscuit and hash browns. For $5.99 I got two fried eggs, two sausage patties and two slices of cheese on a biscuit plus some pretty good hash browns. So, based on my previous review, obviously I didn't expect a whole lot when I decided to try this place for carryout tonight. Stopped in and walked up to the counter, helped myself to a menu, hung out for about 5 minutes until someone finally asked to get my order. I ordered a Greek Salad and 2 kids chicken tenders meals. It took over 10 minutes to put that order together, I didn't receive the drinks with the kids meals that are clearly marked to come with them. The waitress was unfriendly the entire time and while this was going on, the owner was sitting within 5 feet of me at the counter doing nothing. The $7 salad I received was pathetic..like not worth $2. I will make sure to post a picture of it. The foam boxes the chicken tenders were in were melted. When you expect a 2 star visit its hard to disappoint.....yet they managed to do it. Bravo!! These 5 star reviewers have to be friends, family members, employees, or perhaps inbreds that crawled out of the ditches and just don't know any better. I really like this place. It's in the middle of nowhere, but you feel right at home inside. The thing that makes Mama's grill so unique is the menu. There are over 300 items on it, and there's 5 different specials for lunch each day, and 5 different specials for dinner. Honestly, I have no idea how they can manage to have a menu this big and not have issues. This generally causes problems for restaurants, but this is what Mama's prides itself on, and what makes it unique. The couple times I've eaten here, it's been very good. The servers were all very friendly too, which is a must to make a restaurant good in my opinion. If you're rude, I don't want to eat here. But I found this place pleasant. This is the place to go when the whole family wants something different and no one can agree. You can go to Mama's, because they have everything. read more

My husband and I stopped here for breakfast, the wait staff was so polite and accommodating. We both had eggs, breakfast meat, sausage gravy and biscuits, all of it was very good. The portions are large so we have leftovers. Prices were good considering the portion size and for how good the food tasted. We will be ack again the next time we are coming thru on our travels. Delicious food and friendly service at a great value! The patty melt, onion rings, fried pickles, pancakes, biscuits and sausage gravy were all AMAZING. This is your COMFORT FOOD DESTINATION. The food was good and I didn't have to cook it, but...yes there is a but, I asked for a potato with sour cream and butter, but they were out. This restaurant is a time portal and as soon as you step in the door you are transported back to a time when customers were treated with appreciation and given quality and quantity for their money. We got greeted quickly and treated as if they were happy that we were there! The waitress got our drinks right away and we both got a pepsi, and the pepsi was fantastic. I can't tell you the last time I got a soda to drink and it tasted great. I got the fish basket with fries and coleslaw. Fish was delicious, coleslaw fresh and tasty, fries were golden brown and perfect. My wife had the empress chili and she said it was delicious and reminded her of when she was a kid eating out with her family. The portions were huge. A young man came by and refreshed our drinks. It just smelled spoiled! (Side note: We ordered the sampler appetizer (all fried food) & it was pretty good, I can't lie!) BUT, the meatloaf was ABSOLUTELY disgusting!! Back to the smell.... if someone sits a plate in front of you & you immediately smell ROT.... or something in your nose telling your brain, "Don't eat this!" That's a warning!!! I took one bite of meatloaf & almost spit it out! The hash browns were like a greasy pile of mush. The green beans were also mushy & had kind of a "twang" to them, if that makes sense? I asked for a box just to be polite, blaming it on filling up on apps! TOTAL LIE!!!! I was starving!!!! I don't normally ever give mom & pop restaurants bad ratings. But, this was SO gross, I couldn't even eat it!!!! My whole meal, sides & all... were NOT EDIBLE!!!!! It's a greasy spoon type of place with a good variety to choose from I'll admit and you don't leave feeling totally sick. I have eaten there with my husband 4 times and I am consistently happy with the food as is he I love the chicken and shrimp Alfredo and the burgers are amazing we don't go out a lot as we have a small child but when we do we always throw out mamas as one of our first choices to go and we usually do. We were at a soccer tournament in Batavia on 10/13 for an 8am game and it was unseasonably cold. I called the day before and asked if they could accommodate 20 or so soccer players and parents. They didn't blink an eye, took my info and said see you tomorrow. We arrived as planned at 9:45 and they had a table for 20 already set up and ready for us. A young guy took our drink order and then Jessie (the fabulous waitress) took our food orders. With kids at one end of the table and adults at the other, she somehow kept the orders straight. All 20 dishes (and associated sides) came out within 5-10 minutes of each other which I thought was terrific. The wait for the food was short, the portions large and the price quite reasonable. Friendly and capable service was provided during our visit. We lingered a while to get warm and they didn't rush us out. Even the owner came to check to see if we needed anything else.
