I've been hesitant to write this review because I've had some great experiences, but I've had some downright awful ones as well. I think it's a nice local salon, but your experience might be a toss up. Pros: -Massages are top notch! They even included stretching and cracking my neck, which removed so much of my pain. -Eyebrow waxing- good and thorough Even: -Pedicures- I've had some that were amazing. Others have been complete crap. I brought my mom in for a pedi and she was done in 15 minutes. They're $10 more than the other salons in the area. For that, I expect some effort. I've had 15 minute foot massages and I've had someone slap some lotion on and call it a day. Twice I've had to go back to get the polish corrected. -Adil is the sweetest and I recommend him. Unfortunately the last time I got a trim, he cut triple what I requested while layering. Bad: Color: twice they have completely (and admittedly) failed on my color. The first time, Maria made me look like I had tiger stripes. Pahn did an amazing job fixing it so I started to go him for highlights. My last visit was in February. This is when it got bad. My hair was so fried, I was unable to run a brush through it. Even after a deep conditioning treatment, my hair fell out in chunks. I was forced to go to another salon and have since spent over $600 in treatments and haircuts (I have cut over 7 inches off after spending the last 4 years trying to grow it out- this doesn't include the inches that flat out broke off). They refuse to until I have entirely virgin hair growth due to the damage. It's been a heartbreaking and expensive experience. I went to Mancini to tell him about the issue and he gave me a gift card for a color with him. Unfortunately, after 2 massive color mistakes in one salon, I'm not willing to take another chance there, so I threw the gift card away. I would have rather gotten my $220 back from the color. I could have applied it towards all the $ I've spent trying to fix the damage I paid to do to my hair. read more

I've come here over the years for color because I like that they offer Aveda products. Went tonight to cover up some gray hairs and I got that and more. Selena let the hair dye sit while she took another customer and it must have been too long. I asked for my natural hair color, medium brown, and we agreed on the color sample. Left with dark brown hair and dye on my skin around the hairline and some on my jaw line. Didn't notice til I got home because the job took 90 minutes and I had to rush home for baby's bedtime so I left with half wet hair, not expecting I'd need to check my face for dye. read more

I've been to this salon a handful of times since I've lived in the area - the word I'd use to describe my experiences at this place is "inconsistent". I've had nail techs who are competent but unfriendly; nail techs who are competent and friendly; and nail techs who seem to have no idea what they're doing. The lady who does eyebrows is pretty good; I've never had any other services so can't speak to them. It seems clean for the most part (although during one manicure, there were several long, dark hairs on the towel which the tech either didn't notice or did notice and didn't care to remove - gross). I go here when I'm in a pinch, but wouldn't be a regular customer. read more

Let me start by saying (1) this review is strictly of the nail shop not the hair salon and (2) this is not of the actual nail tech who gave me one of the best manicures I've had in a long time. That being said, I will never EVER visit this place again. Went in over the weekend for a gel manicure. Pretty simple ask, however, after sitting down, I mentioned to the technician that on one finger I needed to have an Acrylic tip put on because the nail continues to split length wise (ouch). Apparently, only 2 techs in the entire shop know how to do acrylic nails. The tech did 9 out of 10 of my nails and said that I would have to wait a few minutes for another tech to free up to do the remaining nail. My tech politely asked another tech if she wouldn't mind quickly doing my one nail in between her customers to which she refused because apparently she was SO busy and had an appointment coming in and she couldn't do it because she had to do her customer (the customer had not even arrived in the nail shop when my original tech asked). It literally would have taken 3-5 minutes to do one nail. My tech then approached a second tech who said that she could not do it because she had just finished a pedicure and had to do her customer's manicure before she could step away and do my one nail. It was so disappointing to see the other techs stonewall my original tech and make her feel helpless. The management supported the other two techs and refused to step in and resolve the very clear dispute between the technicians. I have never in my life been to a shop where only 2 people know how to do something that is a fairly common nail salon service. To think that the management expected me to wait an additional 20-30 minutes to have a single nail done despite being in the shop a full hour speaks to bad customer service and incompetent management. On many occasions, I've had managers at different salons politely ask me if my tech could quickly assist another customer. For the most part, I believe people are typically understanding of these requests. I wouldn't care, especially if it's one nail and took about 5 minutes. Let that person get their nail done instead of having to wait 30 minutes on my manicure that has not even started yet. BUT this philosophy is based in competent management who foster a spirit of cooperation amongst their workers. They didn't even ask the other customers if they cared if the one nail was done. They allowed the other two techs to bully the original tech and refused to help her. She kept telling them that it would take just a moment to do but they brushed her off and claimed that their customers were more important to them that helping her with her customer. My time is valuable and my presence as a customer should be valued. There are nail shops on every corner, I suggest you frequent somewhere else. read more

Aveda products but not pushy about trying to sell them. Mr. Mancini was friendly, kind, and shockingly young (40s). Adil Karkas cut my hair tonight, and folks, there is a reason the man has a cult following in the DC/ Northern VA region. He is a salon superstar, a fabled celebrity. A bashful knight in shining armour to legions of professional women yearning for a consistently good, evolving, reasonably-priced hair cut. He focuses 100% on you, he listens, he's not pretentious, he's gentle and kind, he's on time/ consistent, and he has a gift for cutting beautiful hair. An uncommon gift. The man does a blow-out like a bandit. Cool. Calm. Doesn't pull or tug at your hair. Y'all are chatting, and then suddenly - voila! Your hair is glossy and gorgeous as you've ever seen it, while he demurely admires the mastery of his work. Adil has a gentle hand and an eye for creative, soft, beautiful, professional looking hair. He's embarrassed if you compliment his strikingly obvious talent. Not only does he have a large client following, but the sweet lady who does washes and color has been his professional partner for years. The cut with Adil was priced at $50 (Nov 2013). Wow!!!!! The owner's response to Julie P.'s review, I am completely appalled! I WAS a frequent patron of this establishment and would get manicures and pedicures almost monthly. I was with Julie during her visit and can vouch for everything she said. While I have had a few good experiences and will say some of the technicians are good on this trip my experience was lacking as well. My hand massage barely happened and the technician rushed through the paint job which chipped almost immediately. The salon's response has sealed the deal on me taking my business elsewhere from now on. The managers/owners comment was beyond rude and clearly he has zero understanding of customer service. Just a suggestion, but you probably won't stay in business long if instead of working on improving your establishment you spend time bashing your customers. read more

As a three-time customer, I will now never step foot into this salon again thanks to the owner's terrible attitude and blatant attempt at over-charging me on this last visit. All the reviews below are accurate when they mention the terrible customer service. If you get a haircut by the director Mancini (?), the experience will be wonderful (I did my first time and I loved it), so I will not write poorly of him. However, this past visit, I was given the special treatment of a haircut by the business owner (presumably the woman leaving the combative and antagonistic comments to posts on this page) and it was a terrible experience. I don't hate the haircut she did; I hated her attitude. She didn't even bother to introduce herself, she didn't really seem to care about the haircut she gave me (granted, I only said "shoulder-length, layers, side-swept bangs" - as I'm sure she'll remark upon should she grace yelp with her presence again). She told me at the end of the appointment, "I can't read your mind. That's why we tell you to bring a picture." Another gem, "It's only hair, it'll grow back." But the icing on the cake really, was when I stood up to leave and she walked away without a word, visibly upset that I was underwhelmed by the cut and her terrible attitude. And when I went to pay? WELL, they tried to charge me $55 for the haircut, the cost of a cut by the director. I questioned that price and the woman was quick to pull out the salon menu and tell me I was wrong, but then when I said "Oh, I thought the director was that man over there," she just as quickly acted apologetic and said she would only charge me $50. How generous! I called back today to double-check before writing this post - Indeed, the only haircut that costs $55 is one done by the director, who is MALE. Thanks for trying to rip me off. After all of that, I still left her a 20% tip...at least one of us knows general courtesy. read more

I come to this salon relatively frequently because its right down the street from my apartment. As time goes on this place gets worse and worse. It's no longer clean, the staff isn't overly friendly, and the service is poor. The manicure price increased to $18 which would be fine if the service was up to par. My hand "massage" was more like a slopping of lotion on my hands for about 15 seconds max (overall between both hands). The worst part was that the tools were not in a fresh sanitary bag, they were in a clear box that the technician reuses. When my nails were drying I saw her barely wash them off in the sink and then put them right back in her box. Next time I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

I rarely give 5 stars for anything, but this salon and spa is worth it. Let me start by just saying that Adil is shear genius. I came in with drab hair with dead ends and absolutely no body. I'm leaving with my long, healthy looking hair full of long layers and so much volume. This man is so polite, funny, and a master of the art of cutting hair. Find Adil if you need a makeover, trim or just a blowout. He's amazing. I travel 3 hours in Northern VA traffic to see him. Also, Maria did a beautiful job on my sisters hair color. I honestly can't believe I'm writing this review because I rarely have issues with getting my nails done. I went in on 12/14/18 to get a fill for my acrylic nails, it's a simple procedure. The technician was a nice older lady I forgot her name but everything was going well. I liked the shape of my nails and the color I picked, overall I was satisfied leaving the salon. When I was opening the car door I noticed one of my nails felt loose before I even left the parking space by the salon but I left thinking Maybe I imagined it. After further inspection I noticed that not 1, not 2 or 3 but 4 nails were loose and not applied properly and were coming off. I have never had this happen to me before. I called the next day and told the receptionist told me no problem come in and we will fix it. I asked if another technician could work on my nail and I was told she was the only technician that did acrylic nails which I am now finding out be a lie after further inspecting yelp reviews and posts of other nail technicians work in their salon. Anyway I went for the second time in a couple days and got my nails redone. They seemed fine at first but I noticed the technician was still using minimal gel to fill in and I even showed her one of my nails looks like it would come off and she reassured me it will be fine. These pictures are og my nails day 2 after getting them redone by the same technician. I will never return and I do not recommend this place for any acrylic or gel work to anyone. $48 for an acrylic fill and end up with messed up nails that I have to get redone else where. I was very excited when this salon came into my neighborhood. Convenient location and updated look and feel. The manicures and pedicures I get from Carmen and Sophie have been excellent. They both do a great job!! My repeated issue with this salon is the staff, namely the front desk staff. On SEVERAL occasions I have made an appointment for a specific time, only to have them call me back and ask me if I can come later. As we can all understand, some days that simply isn't possible. I don't understand why they continue to book people for services and then try to push them back. The last time I went, they made me wait 20 minutes beyond my appointment time to begin my service. Everyone's time is valuable, but the staff at Mancini don't value their patrons time apparently. I did ask them to get a better display case for their polishes, and they eventually did, which really made it easier to find the right shade. I also suggested they quit playing the radio over the stereo system as no one wants to relax to the sound of constant commercials. They have started playing other music which makes it feel like a more spa-like atmosphere. Again, Carmen and Sophie have done a great job each time, but the staff really could stand improvement with scheduling, client appreciation and attention to detail and service. read more

Fabulous cut and color! I went here for the first time a few months ago when my long time stylist moved away. Maria talked to me at length about my color, looked closely at my hair and talked to me about what she recommended. It all sounded great so she got started. She was efficient and I was thrilled with the results. It looked shiny, natural, and really the color that I had been hoping for. My hair was really damaged when I went in and looked fabulous when I left. She gave me some great pointers about how to repair it and get it back in shape. I had told her how I previously had a scalp reaction to color and so I appreciated she was very aware of that and applied a small amount to start to make sure I wasn't having a reaction. Adil took care of the cut. He was equally as fabulous. Made a great recommendation for a haircut that he thought would flatter my face shape. He was fast with the scissors you could tell he's been doing this a very long time. He blew it dry and I felt 5 years younger! They are a great duo! So happy I've found a new hair team! read more

I needed a quick mani for an event. They quickly accommodated my mother and I. The lady that took mom tried to up-sell her to a gel mani ($30) and was unsuccessful. While she was courteous to mom, she didn't give her the full mani treatment. She didn't use cuticle oi, have her wash her hands, or give her a hand massage. SMH. My lady on the other hand, Carmen was super nice. Gave me the whole experience. Carmen was apologetic for mom's technician and offered to help and makeup for mom's sub-par experience. Great Neighborhood Salon. I found this place through Belly and got a free deep conditioning treatment. The staff was very friendly, was able to accommodate my limited availability (they have great week day hours), and didn't try to force any additional services on me (which I appreciate). I've been here several times for pedicures and once for hilights, so those are the only services I am reviewing. First, I tried this place once for my hair. They put me with the owner (Mancini, at least I assume he is the owner, in the front chair), which I thought would be great, but it wasn't! He did my hilights (not actually sure how to spell that!) super fast, and I thought he must have mastered a skill that every other hair dresser in the world still needed to take their time at--it turns out that taking time IS necessary; he basically just dyed my hair blonde instead of doing hilights. I was definitely not happy with the outcome. Then after my hair was washed he told me that drying my hair was something like $30 extra, so I just left with wet hair, which was the last thing I would expect after sitting down with the salon's owner!! Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I feel like if washing your hair is part of the service, a blow dry should also be built into the price. Next, nails. Generally the service is okay, with a pedicure taking about an hour. This place doesn't smell horrible like actual nail salons, which is why I come here. However last time I made an appointment and took my husband in with me for some pampering--2 o'clock on a Saturday (not some obscure time on a weekday). All my husband really wants out of a pedicure is a long foot rub. Our technician's, though, rushed through the service so quickly, the massage part was less than a minute. They were understaffed, and what normally took an hour was over in 30 minutes. I was so disappointed. Also, the girl next to me (the ONLY other person there for a pedicure) had already had her nails done and was more than half way through her pedicure, when someone showed up for an appointment and her technician had to abandon her. She sat there for at least 15 minutes until the technician who rushed through my pedi was able to go finish hers. Really just understaffed and terrible. I'll be looking for another place to go next time. read more

I made a last minute appointment with Mary for a bikini waxing. Because the former location seemed a bit sketchy, I was not sure what to expect with the new salon in Penrose. First, the salon itself seemed nice and professional. The only criticism I have is that the waxing room door opened directly into a hallway, so when the aesthetician comes in pretty much anybody in the hall has a direct view of you...at whatever your clothing level. They may want to consider a curtain. Second, Mary was fantastic. She was very professional and efficient. She did a great job and I will definitely return to her. My last experience was at the Red Door, so I had fairly high expectations. She exceeded them. read more

After searching around for a good (and affordable) stylist since moving here a few years ago, I'm thrilled to say I found Adil! The Yelp reviews for him are not wrong. He is kind, takes his time, and gave me the hairstyle I didn't even know I wanted. The price is reasonable, the atmosphere pleasant, and the staff professional. I also had my eyebrows waxed, and Fatima, who is new to the salon, was excellent. She was careful and took her time to be sure the job was done just right.
