Well, I'm in Kahala and I'm looking for a place to have lunch. I have a bunch of places to choose from. But I'm not in the mood for sushi... Baked goods isn't going to be enough but a plate lunch is too much. Literally right in front of me is a Chinese takeout. The menu looks uncluttered and simple, and the store is spotless. I googled it and it has a decent rating. I think I'll try this place. I got the fried rice, orange chicken and mapo tofu. Back at the office and I dig in. It's.....not bad. But nothing to write home about. The thing that concerns me is there seems to be little clumps of salt in the mapo tofu.... It was nice, then salty for a brief moment, then nice again. They've cut the offering down to a potion of the table, but it was good. Had chow funn, beef broccoli, and black bean chicken w/peppers. I've ordered here before and loved the fast service and food. Better than most Chinese food places around. But this last time I got food, they gave me the wrong dish. I didn't try to go back bc I was with my newborn and toddler and it wasn't worth the $4 difference to schlep back with them. And plus. I was starving so didn't have the patience either. I ordered broccoli shrimp and got beef and broccoli instead. A bit disappointed. The beef broccoli was not as good as the shrimp and broccoli. Today while spending time on the East side of the island I decided to try the relatively new Mandarin Kitchen. I was craving some good Mandarin cuisine like some xiaolingbao or spicy pork, etc. Was a bit disappointed to find more of a Cantonese style take out place. There is a precooked hot line of entrees at a pretty reasonable price starting at $6.95 for one side and one entree choice. Once resolving the fact I wasn't going to get "Mandarin" food, I opted to order off the menu instead. While the beef bittermelon was a disappointing portion which looked like only 2/3 of a "small" Styrofoam container, the flavor was spot on. The cooking was also perfect, just barely undercooked, allowing to come to the perfect degree of doneness even in the box for takeout. And, the price was fair ($10.95) ...I decided to try the roast meats as...what was hanging in the window looked pretty darn good. And while the prices were a bit higher than other places (I get it...this is Kahala and the rent is probably high) the flavor was heavenly I tell you! The roast duck was plump, very moist, with just the right amount of crisp (14.98 for half a duck). The charsiu was tasty without being too sweet ($7.50 for half pound). The roast pork...ohh the roast pork; sooo juicy with the perfect amount of crisp ($8.50 for half pound). I tried a bite...okay, a few bites as soon as I got home and it really was, one of my favorites; ranking right up there with my other favorite at Char Siu House in Chinatown. I can now get a delicious roast pork without going into Chinatown which can be worth the slight up charge in price. I also enjoy a take out place in Makiki for the easy parking and feeling of safety HOWEVER I dare say, the roast meats here at Mandarin Kitchen capture a higher ranking from me for taste. Because this roast park is so delicately delicious it should be eaten right away for best results. Located just outside of Kahala Mall in a strip full of eating options such as Jersey Mikes and McDonalds, parking is easy as there are a few parking spaces fronting Mandarin Kitchen dedicated to pickup for maximum 15 minutes. ... We happen to be in the Kahala area so we stopped by Mandarin Kitchen to pick up lunch, ordered the minute chicken with cake noodle and the fried gau gee. The noodles were very hard and dry, not in a cake form but in big lumps, and the sauce poured on top was overly salty. The chicken pieces looked like they were fried tempura style and were just okay. I didn't eat much of this dish. The fried gau gee came with plum sauce and looked good but it smelled like the oil they were fried in was rancid! Sorry to say it was a disappointing experience and I will not come here again. There were seats available for the customers who were waiting for take out which was good, service was courteous, and the place was clean with a glass window so you could see what was going on in the side kitchen. read more

I've noticed Honolulu kind of has a dearth of what, on the mainland, is often known as Chinese food--those cheap and oily Americanized-Chinese fast food places that are ubiquitous in New England--we kind of just have Panda and everywhere else is either local Chinese food or expensive. Not that this place tastes cheap and oily, but it's certainly in the price range and general taste range of those places. My mom apparently got like ten plates--each an enormous box with enough for two means, for under $100. For the price range, the food was great--even microwaved several hours later. The duck was good. I say that in spite of the fact that I usually don't really like duck since its kind of tough and has too many bones. This duck tasted very meaty and savory, and was soft enough that I could easily eat around the bone. The skin wasn't crispy (at least the piece I had) but it nice and oily tasting. The fried rice had egg nicely mixed into the rice with lup chong, shrimp, peas, and maybe other stuff. Tasted very fresh, pretty different from typical fried rice since it didn't seem like it was fried with shoyu--light, not oily, and a good substitute for plain white rice. The black bean beef chow mein had a good taste, nice kind of charred, sweet and savory taste. I prefer my chow mein a little chewier, but this one had been sitting out so perhaps that's why. The mochiko chicken was among my favorites. Nice and chewy and crispy but with more of a peppery maybe oniony taste than the usual sweeter mochiko chicken at okazuyas and aunties' houses. The singapore noodle were tasty, can't go wrong with them. I enjoyed the texture of the egg plant, with the succulent and soft sliced of eggplant mixed with kind of crunchy menma (I think?). It had a nice sweet/salty garlicky taste but the sauce was a little overpowering, maybe too salty. It was good in a small eggplant to rice ratio. The pork chop, on the other hand, had a nice peppery garlicky flavor but had a lot of breading and probably the oiliest. Again, probably because it was sitting but, in this instance not my favorite. I found a bug in my food! Cooked into the noodles. (See photo) I was going to email the manager, and just give them a heads up. Wasn't going to post on Yelp because it didn't feel right. However, I just called them to ask for their email address. The lady who answered did not know, and was no help at all. She basically just rushed me off the phone and kept saying ok..ok... as in "what do you expect me to do about it" Bugs in food happens, but I feel they should take some responsibility. Once every so often I have Roast Duck Attack. I just gotta have it. And I read about this new place in Kalaha, so I had to try. But for a few times I called them and they told me they ran out of the duck. So, I thought it must be so good if they run out every time! So, I called them first thing in the morning (at this time they open at 10:30 am) and reserved one! Yes, you can reserve it so they will keep it for you to pick up. There it was. A brand new take-out place in the spot where used to be a Ramen shop "Tsuta Ramen." And I had a faint feeling of doubt in my mind..... "oh, that place.... Ramen shop no more." I thought of this because this place used to be the closest Ramen shop from my old place. And I had to write a 2 star review due to their Ramen that was so ........ not authentic. So, I asked the lady at cashier if the owner is the same as that Ramen shop, and she told me 'yes.' (and yes, she looked familiar, too....). So, I asked the lady "is the chef same chef?" And she told me "no, not same chef." I was relieved. A bit. But anyway, I've reserved a duck so I purchased it for take out. The result? It was pretty good, actually. Fairly tender, and the duck skin (my favorite part) is not too dry, not too fatty. I would prefer the duck itself to have more Chinese herbs and spices, and just a little more salt, though. It was a taste more toward "Roast Chicken" a bit. But it did taste like duck for sure. The sauce is very different here. Kind of thin, not so sweet like other places. Now, I'm not so much in favor of sauce that's too sweet, but the sauce at Mandarin Kitchen is much thinner and lot of garlic in it. So, I had to add a little bit of soy sauce at home. Anyway, the duck is not bad. Not bad at all. I think it's just a matter of preferences. But now I've moved to Waikiki, so it's no longer the closest Chinese place for me any more. So, at least when I have the next Roast Duck Attack, I may go other place that's closer....... I would like to try other menu when I'm in Kahala area hungry for Chinese food. P.S. Just like others, I was intrigued by the signs all over the Kahala and Kaimuki area. This is a take-out Chinese restaurant, which is perfect for the pandemic. The "wok" is definitely going strong in the back and food is better than Panda Express. Not overly salty but properly seasoned. It kinda reminds me of Mandalay on Alakea (downtown). The honey walnut shrimp was the crowd favorite and the house fried rice is also good with some lup cheong. I would return and try their roast duck and bbq spareribs. read more

Oh boy! First time here but so glad I found it. Yes on Yelp. Called to order before hand. Store in the Kahala Mall property, right next to Mc Donald's. The area is newly renovated so the bright lights stand out and can spot them right away. Store was bright and clean. Roast duck hanging, assume char siu and roast pork usually, they were probably sold out by the time I got there at 6:40. My order was ready. Remembered to tip them (usually give them cash for tip) because we want to support these local businesses. Drive home, enticing my appetite, food smelled so yummy and freshly cooked. Taste did not fail. Usually not a chow fun person but since my friend liked it, we ordered it and I loved it. And look at the portion, also for the ginger chicken! This new Chinese takeout is a nice addition to the Kahala area. Everyone misses Lam's Garden and this is no replacement. There are a few ready to eat selections like fried rice, chow mein, ma po tofu, etc. There is roast duck, roast pork, etc. But we ordered off the menu. The crispy gau gee was very good - meaty filling and fried to a golden brown. Nice size of 4 for $3.50. The duck was good but Roast Duck Kitchen's is tastier. The beef with bitter melon was good with lots of bitter melon. The salt fish and chicken fried rice was good but it had more rice than I'd like. Overall it was good but not crazy good. First time ordering here. I ordered the fish and Choi Sum and Gon Lo Mein. The fish entree was good I like that there were plenty of fish and veggies. I would order that again especially when I want something light. I'm from the Bay Area and I was craving chow mein and unfortunately their Gon Lo M in was too greasy and didn't have the flavor I was missing from back home. I wouldn't order that again. I like mine dryer. I want to taste their Salted Fish and Diced Chicken Fried Rice. Not all are equal, I like returning to places that make it well. I'm not a fried rice person and that's the only fried rice I would eat. I will have to try their Char Sui too. If there's that close by that's a plus. It's nice to finally have a Chinese restaurant in Kahala again. Made me really miss Lam's Garden. A couple people told me about Mandarin Kitchen opening up recently and they said they have ready made hot foods (like how you order at Panda Express) and they also have regular Chinese take out. What really brought me here was that one of my friends told me that they have roast duck, which I was really wanting. I stopped by in the afternoon, about 3pm. They were still doing constructions to the dining area (which is unavailable anyway due to Covid-19). It's a small place with the counter only a few steps away from the door (which is great!). First thing that caught my eye was the roast ducks hanging in the booth next to the cashier... that's the first thing I ordered! I looked at their hot line but they only had about 4 dishes out, which looked like only had fried rice or noodles... either I came too late or that's all they had for now (since they're fairly new). I ordered the half roast duck ($13.95 as of May 2020), and a mapo tofu (no rice included). The roast duck was fairly good. I was hoping the skin would be crispier. The duck is a bit sweeter than I'm used to but other than that, it satisfied my roast duck cravings. I was also wanting Mapo Tofu (tofu with ground meat). It was pretty tasty and not overly spicy, but it's a bit liquid-y for my liking. I prefer it a bit more gelatinous. We waited no longer than 10 minutes for our order. We saw them chopping up the duck, right in front of us. Parking is shared with Mcdonalds, L&L's, etc... I recommend parking closer to McDonalds side because the parking stalls near the restaurant is hard to maneuver since the lot is a lot smaller. So I normally don't write bad reviews but unfortunately, this restaurant was asking for it. I'm giving it 2 stars because the meal was made in under 4 minutes which was astonishing. However, the food was disgusting. I got the beef chowfun with black bean sauce. I'm Chinese. Chowfun is basically a staple food item that you can't mess up. ESPECIALLY if you add black bean sauce. Not only was the black bean sauce diluted beyond measure so you couldn't even taste the flavor of the sauce really, but they diluted it with unfiltered tap water that tasted like it had been sitting outside in a plastic bucket for days before being used. The "gravy" was extremely watered down and the beef was made up of mostly fatty pieces which were hard to chew. I really wanted to love this spot since it is extremely convenient for me but after this experience, I am terrified to try and eat here again. The food tasted so bland and terrible that I didn't even feed it to my dog. That's how bad the food was. read more

This place used to be Tsuta Ramen next to the Kahala McDonald's. Other then Panda, there wasn't any Chinese food in the mall so I was glad to have another option. We went around 1 pm on a Friday afternoon. The place was nice and clean and places to sit when the time comes when we can. It's like any other Chinese take out where you pick your starch and choices. When we where there a number of pans were empty. Got the beef noodle soup, orange chicken Also tried the roast pork which was pretty good - had a nice crispy skin. They also had duck hanging but didn't try that. The beef noodle was very generous with the beef. Tons! Unfortunately it was very very salty. The noodles were too soft for my taste. And it was drowned in sauce. The beef bowls I had in the past were noodles with pieces of meat on top. This one confused me- was I supposed to eat the dish with just the sauce or pour the broth on top? Was like a combo of soup noodles and sauce noodles. Couldn't finish it. Usually there is at least a few pieces of char Siu None and shrimp is plural because there were 2 tiny shrimps on top of the Choi sum. I called and the girl answered said you get 4 Gau her. The experience was excruciating. We waited five minutes before the attendant got off the phone. Then while we are giving our order the phone rings and she answers it mid sentence. This occurs another eight times maybe. When my husband finally gets to tell her he wanted oyster chicken from the ready made food, she scoops orange chicken into his plate. No going back now. He just went with it. I ordered the Singapore fried rice noodles. The noodles were cooked well and flavorful. The food overall had good taste. I would recommend calling and ordering ahead. They definitely serve phone customers first no matter if you are standing right in front. The attendant was overwhelmed. There was too much going on. When a second person did arrive she was rude and just threw things around right in front of everyone. It was a weird experience to say the least. Girlfriend ordered cold ginger chicken plate. Price was good for the portion of food given. Only issue with the food was its very bland and the texture of the chicken is grainy and over cooked. The chicken really tastes like it was boiled in 50 gallons of water, then frozen and thawed. It pulls flavor out of your tongue. The ginger sauce they give you isn't really Mandarin and comes in a small oz container which enough to cover 1/4 of the chicken. When asking for another container the cost is $1.75...just for mostly plain sauce. Other dishes maybe all right, but based on others reviews I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

I walked in to order because they don't do online orders anymore, but their prices on their website are wrong. The food was cooked quickly, but their portions have gotten much smaller, and their prices are more expensive, so its like a double whammy. I ordered the chicken with broccoli and there was more broccoli then chicken, it might have had one piece of chicken thigh cut into small pieces, usually the items in the ingredients list is most to least, so they should call it broccoli with chicken not chicken with broccoli. I also had the egg foo young with gravy and paid $40.00 for the two items. The food had a good taste. Will have to reconsider if I'll go back again. Chinese food used to be a good, inexpensive choice but has gotten so expensive now. I don't mind paying the price as long as it's a good value. read more

It's a nice alternative to Panda Express in Kahala Mall. It's likely now the 2 Chinese restaurants in the Kahala Mall area. I didn't notice they had a soft opening in late May 2020. If you fancy yourself a nice and generous portion of Chinese fare, you're in luck if you are in east Oahu or passing through. Mandarin Kitchen reminds me of Patty's Chinese Kitchen in Ala Moana's Makai Market food court back in the day, where they had a roasting area for their chicken and ducks being on display. I discovered Mandarin Kitchen open on a random weekday afternoon after Memorial Day weekend. There were people looking in and some people already ordering inside. They have the menu posted next to the entrance. This restaurant's space seems like a take out place, but it has enough room for a few tables and chairs for people to sit down and eat (although not currently in the current pandemic). I'm sure we can eventually do such a thing, but for now, it's mainly a take out affair. For the most part though, Mandarin Kitchen is a pleasant and refreshing addition to Kahala Mall. The prices here are on par with other Chinese restaurants in the Honolulu area. They average $11 for many dishes, depending on what you are ordering. I gotta say, I'll likely be back depending on if I have a craving for Chinese cuisine but don't want to go far. I ultimately ordered beef chao fun, which is simple and generally not overpriced. The taste was on point and delicious, while not being overly saturated with oil when they cook. Other items on the menu looked good, but will save for another visit. The overall experience here at Mandarin Kitchen - Kahala Mall was nice, casual, and a breath of fresh air. It's been a while since we had an alternative to Panda Express at the Kahala Mall. While there are Chinese restaurants in Kaimuki town, there was only Panda Express for a while - at least to my knowledge anyway. Since they had a soft opening in May 2020, the space here is very immaculate and clean. Very inviting for sure. The service here is friendly and fast, while serving up customers like how you would at Panda Express. They offer plate lunches too, as well with 2 choices under $10, which is pretty awesome really. They offer catering services as well, which is apart of their menu as you walk in. If you are in the area and want to check out this brand new Chinese eatery, come on by. No dine in services yet, although that would be available eventually. Might be the hidden gem in Kahala that everyone is craving. Mandarin Kitchen - Kahala is located within the Kahala Mall complex, although it's next to Kahala McDonald's. It's address is 4618 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu 96816. I had cash on me at the time, so I blindly paid for my food with that. I'll need to double check on whether or not they accept major credit cards for my next visit here. Kahala Mall has generous parking options, along with the spaces right up at the restaurant itself, along with McDonalds and other merchants in that space that's kinda separated from the main mall building. If you are like me, TheBus routes 1, 1L, 14, 22, 23, 24 come through the area and stop off at various points along the shopping center. Best bet would be to come here before or after the lunch or dinner rush to secure the best parking spot and get your food without having to wait in line. My experience here at Mandarin Kitchen took about 10 minutes from start to finish. Next time, I shall order the plate lunch. I am service sensitive, and this is why this place does not get my vote of approval. I walked in to find a worker slouched in a chair in the corner, and a woman with her back to the counter prepping stuff. I had to say "excuse me" three times before she turned around to pay attention. The worker continued to sit and ignore. My husband brought home Chinese, and told me about this place. We have been searching for a really good alternative to fill that Chinese void on the East side, I have high expectations for noodles. He brought home the house fried noodle, and beef broccoli, and sweet and sour pork. It was decent, however I told him he needs to order the noodle and have the sauce kept separate, because the noodle was a little soggy. We've been back a few times, and have yet to try the plates (pre-made options). The only thing we ordered that wasn't quite as expected was the Kung Pao beef. It lacked the pow, and had lots of onions and bell peppers and chili peppers, but not much flavor. Ordered Minute Chicken Cake Noodle. The cook burnt one side of the cake noodle really bad! Couldn't even eat it! Go somewhere else.
