This restaurant has a very long history as it is the oldest sushi restaurant in Seattle, and the fact that it is still open means that they are doing very well in business! Reservation process felt a bit old fashioned and a bit challenging as this place is quite popular and they take reservations by text, with variable response times (up to 24 hrs). When we got our reservations for Friday dinner for 2, around 5:15pm, we were greeted by the owner and got seated once the full party is present. Next to the stand, they say the restaurant is fully booked for the night. Ambience and food presentation are lowkey - what they excel is the food itself. A lot of the things including the tatami rooms look very traditional, and I wish we got seated at this rooms (which might be for larger parties anyways). We ordered Amaebi (sweet shrimp) nigiri, California roll, salmon namban, and unagi kamameshi. We also got hot tea which was nicely presented in a lightly decorated teapot. Amaebi (sweet shrimp) nigiri - the shrimp is quite fresh as it is to be expected for the price point ($12 for 2 pieces only). The issue was that they did not serve the fried shrimp heads until afterwards, so we thought we got a bit ripped off from the dish. The fried shrimp heads were gigantic and fried - so the portion is pretty decent. California roll - sounds basic but they use snow crab. It definitely tastes better than the regular California rolls with imitation crab. There are only 8 pieces and they are quite tiny, so if you get rolls here, you will be paying a loooot relative to other places. Salmon namban - this was an interesting dish as it is salmon that is lightly floured and flash fried, so people would think it is a hot dish. It is actually a refreshing, cool dish and the flour and flash frying gives a nice depth of fry flavor, while the lemon and soy sauce cool down the dish. This is one of the better value and higher quality dishes, which is also why this is part of their signature menu. Unagi Kamameshi - eel with flavored rice which serves 2 people. Order this ahead of time as it is cooked to order and takes 30 minutes. The eel is very good and the rice is lightly flavored and somewhat sweet. For $28, it is a bit on the expensive side but there is actually more food than what it looks as the bowl is very deep. There is quite a lot of rice so we ended up having leftovers for a small meal afterwards. Service was okay and is not really the focus. We got a refill for tea but wish they were able to fulfill ice water refill as I drink a lot of water during my meal. Prices are also on the higher end for the amount of food given. Otherwise, I had a positive experience dining here and can see why this place is still popular after many years in business. read more

It's finally open, hurray! After a tantalizing 2 years of waiting due to the onset of COVID and much hype from my wife, I was floored to see Maneki's doors open again for business. I immediately booked a reservation and literally countered the days until the fateful day we can dine at one of Seattle's oldest Japanese restaurants. Overall, a solid 4.3 in my books. We ordered: The Chirashi bowl The Variety Ozen bento The Black Cod Collars Takoyaki Let's start with the appetizers. The black cod dish was delicious, and it's super generous that the dish came with three collars. Ever since moving to Seattle and exploring the seafood scene, black cod has become one of my favorite seafood dishes to get. And Maneki's certainly did not disappoint. However, the disappointing factor of this dish was that it came out lukewarm, which was a huge bummer. I was expecting it to be hot, but it felt like the cod chilled for a bit (literally and metaphorically) after being cooked and before being served to us. Still, the flavors and buttery texture was to die for. The takoyaki was good too. Nothing super special, but 8 pieces for $8? That's quite a steal and I was beginning to learn that Maneki doesn't skimp on its servings, which is a delight to behold. My ozen dish, following suit to the appetizer, was huge and plentiful. It came with an assortment of greens and tempura, which were great. The sushi pieces were so good and the fish slices were *chef's kiss* just so good. The teriyaki kuwayaki was interesting though. I was initially expecting just plain ole teriyaki and was surprised that it was so saucy (that was my bad). After looking up kuwayaki as a sauce, I continued to enjoy the meat, which was cooked beautifully. But my mouth couldn't get over the sweetness and thickness of the sauce, and I honestly was not a huge fan of it. I mean no offense for saying this at all, but it was like if teriyaki and Panda Express's orange chicken had a baby, it would be this. Cooked teriyaki that tasted great, but lathered in a thick heavy sweet sauce. Not my cup of tea, but the rest of the assortment was great. The downside was the chirashi. My wife said it was merely ok, with the fish having a watery odd taste that was reminiscent of defrosted fish. I didn't get to try any, but I take her word for it. Overall, it was an honor, privilege, and an long-awaited journey to finally try Maneki. It was great and I would definitely recommend tourists and friends to make a reservation to dine at a historic spot like this. I do think there's better out there in Seattle, but for a Japanese meal that won't break your bank, this is a great place to visit. read more

As a party of seven, we were pleasantly surprised to have our own private room, adding an intimate touch to our dining experience. We were so excited to find ourselves near Maneki, one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in the United States, after visiting the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience and even more so to be welcomed as a party of two, who promised to eat quickly before the bulk of Maneki's evening reservations arrived. We ordered a smorgasbord, including: Sunomono (sliced cucumber in light vinegared dressing with kelp); Age Dashi Tofu (fried tofu topped with dashi soy sauce), Tako-Yaki (donut hole filled with octopus and topped with special sauce, bonito shavings, and nori sprinkles), Gyoza (Maneki's homemade potstickers), Sukiyaki (vegetables, clear noodles, udon noodles, and tofu cooked in a soy sauce base) with beef; and Spicy Tuna Roll (raw tuna in chili sauce, green onions and radish sprouts). What a blast from the past. Maneki has been serving the Seattle area for over 100 years and as the saying goes, if it's not broken don't fix it. The restaurant is a throwback to simpler times when the focus was on the food rather than on the decor and dark lights to keep you from seeing other people. This place is about a sense of community and tradition. I went here with my friend from high school and loved everything we got. The fish was fresh and well cut. No tendons were found, which is always a bummer when the chef misses them. If you are looking for an old school sushi experience, definitely come here. I called their number (the one listed on GOOGLE and not Yelp) which directed me to text them to make a reservation. I actually got a text response the following morning so don't expect an immediate response! What we got: miso dengaku, black cod collar miso, beef sukiyaki, spicy creamy scallop roll, maneki ice supreme Miso dengaku--this eggplant was SOO good. Maybe a little potent if there's a lot of sauce on the piece you eat but otherwise delicious LOVED the scallop roll as well. This place is currently doing takeout, so my experience is only based on that. We got the yakiudon with chicken and the whole squid. The portions are very generous for the price. The yakiudon was good, the chicken was a little dry but the ratio of everything was really good. Not too much of anything. It's interesting as it came with katsu sauce and ginger which I'm not use to but it was good. My favorite was definitely the squid. It was cooked perfectly, not too tough or chewy. The flavor was good as well. Service was good, the lady was nice. We had to wait for a bit but they definitely had a lot of orders coming in. One of Seattle's best Japanese restaurants, in my opinion. In 1904, Maneki became Seattle's first sushi restaurant. Just be aware that this restaurant requires reservations for dine-in service, and the process is a little unusual. You can reserve a table by calling the restaurant and leaving a voicemail with the day, time, and number of people you'd like to reserve. If the time is available, the restaurant will call you back. The moment you enter the restaurant, you genuinely feel as though you have been flown to a sushi bar in Japan. We started with the gyoza, which was a great choice for appetizers. The spicy tuna roll, which is really well-balanced and not overly spicy, was the second item we had. Finally, we ordered the beef sukiyaki, which has a ton of fantastic flavor and is by far my favorite dish at Maneki. I came here in a group of five for a graduation celebration dinner, and booked a tatami room two weeks in advance via text. While the tatami room has the classic floor cushions, there's actually an indent under the table to place your legs, so no worries if you have knee issues. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including: - EGGPLANT MISO DENGAKU ($9): This was smaller than I'd expected, but the small slices of eggplant are broiled so that the skin gets a nice mild crisp, and the miso sauce adds a nice sweetness that was quite tasty if a little slightly strong for me - BLACK COD COLLAR MISO ($14): probably my favorite -- super flavorful, with a nice crispy seat. - SAKURA SALAD ($20): A sashimi and avocado salad that I highly recommend. When I knew we were doing a weekend escape to Seattle I hit up a friend from high school days who loves there for food recs. Maneki was the too of her list so I made a reservation for our first night there. We were a party of 3 and our reservation was for as soon as they opened. We had some time to kill so we walked from our hotel to Japantown and checked out the area before heading to the restaurant. Once inside, we got to experience the decor, old school, what some might call retro or vintage, but homey feeling. Highly recommend making an appointment as they run out of seats every time I came. If you want sit in the tatami rooms, you need a table of six people. When they get busy, there came be a bit of wait for the food to be served. I've enjoyed the different dishes I tried at Maneki. My favorite dish was the miso black cod collar. We first went here 15 years ago and it was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious and authentic. As expected for an authentic Japanese restaurant, the service was impeccable. Fast forward 15 years. A group of us made reservations for August on a trip back to Seattle and were seated in the private tatami room, so they called it, but there was no tatami anywhere near to be found. The first hint we got that the service was not going to be good was when the server refused to take our drink order until we ordered our food first because "the kitchen will start to get busy". So I guess not serving us a drink was supposed to motivate us to order quickly. Although there was plenty of room for the server to walk around the table and serve us individually, she always went to the head of the table and asked the people sitting on each side to grab the water off her tray and pass it down. She did this with the beer, sake, appetizers and the main course as well. Now let's talk about how the quality of the food coming out of the kitchen. It was mediocre at best. The Ika Shiokara was watery and overly salty, the Ika natto was dry natto with transient scraps of ika, the sukiyaki too sweet, the tempura not crisp, and the rest of the dishes were just as meh. However, the Chirashi Bowl from the sushi bar was excellent. The portions of the appetizers were far too small for the amount they charged. To make matters worse, after the food was served, the server announced we had to be done with our meal at 7:15 (for our 6pm reservation) since there was another party showing up at 7:30. Never had this happen to us in a restaurant. Ever. Needless to say, we were very disappointed and will not be returning which will most likely not bother the owner one bit since this restaurant serving mediocre food was packed full with people who don't know authentic Japanese food and will not miss us our absence one bit. read more

The restaurant owner was nice to eventually slip us in (there were some no shows maybe?). Contrary to a prior review there is no sushi bar so technically no walk ins. The service was great! I made a reservation for a week night dinner by texting the number on their website and it was so easy to make one! Upon walking in, we were seated right away. It was a little busy and there were only two or three servers at the time so it took a bit to order & get our food. We ordered takoyaki as an appetizer but it ended up coming with our main dishes but the rolls came out super quick. We got 4 rolls between the 3 of us to share and they were really good and fresh! I liked that the sauce was just the right amount and not overwhelming where you can't taste the fish For the main dishes, we got nabeyaki udon and beef yakiudon. It's been really cold outside and the nabeyaki udon just hit the spot!! The broth was amazing, noodles were cooked to perfection and there was a good amount of toppings. For the beef yakiudon, I ended up not liking it as much as I thought I would. Compared to the udon, it didn't have much flavor and it tasted a little bland. I tried adding more soy sauce and other condiments that were on the table but it didn't fix much. I just love the old, traditional, non-fru fru Japanese restaurants with an extensive amount of fried foods, small plates, and sushi. I grew up in Hawaii with amazing Japanese food, and this place reminds me of home. Unfortunately, they were understaffed and couldn't serve sashimi or sushi this night, but they had rolls available. Glad they told me this in advance during the rez booking. I recommend getting the sukiyaki, miso eggplant, miso black cod collar, and ankimo (monkfish liver). All the other dishes including tempura, sushi, and croquette were good, too. Overall, I wouldn't say this meal blew my mind, but I enjoyed every dish and found the meal variable and comforting. Always look forward to bringing our extended family to Maneki for a delightful Japanese dinner. Last visit a couple of weeks ago was the first disappointing experience we've had. Six of us with our relatives from Nevada sat in the Tatami room and enjoyed the atmosphere on a moderately busy Friday night......assorted items were ordered and most were excellent but my wife, the only Japanese person in the group, ordered Ten Zaru and when it didn't come and everyone had more or less finished their meals we asked the waiter about it....he then brought out cold and overcooked tempura with limp, warm and overcooked soba noodles......sad for my wife who was so looking forward to a Maneki dinner. Got there around 7pm and they were already fully booked. Prices were affordable and food was delicious. My friends and I all loved everything we tried. We ordered 2 of the miso collar, unagi kamameshi, miso dengaku, spicy scallop roll, fish karage, chirashi premium, tempura udon meal and it was more than enough food for 5 people. Our favorite was the black cod miso collar which they're well known for and it was perfectly marinated and perfectly cooked- not too salty but still super flavorful. All the sashimi was very fresh. This is a family owned business I believe. Jean Nakayama, the owner of Maneki, took her time to chat with us, check how we enjoyed the food, and gave us recommendations on things to do in Seattle since we were new to the area. While scrolling on IG, I noticed one of the videos mentioned sushi and saw the person raving about this cute authentic Japanese restaurant. I showed it to my boyfriend, and we both decided to have a date night here! It's located on 6th Ave S in the International District. The restaurant can be easily missed if they didn't have their sign up front. Super hidden yet a big space for a restaurant. There's only street parking which could be difficult to find during rush lunch/dinner hours and weekends. My boyfriend and I ordered a ton of food to share. We ordered the Black Cod Collar Miso, Spicy Creamy Scallop Roll, Spider Roll, and the Variety Ozen. Black Cod Collar Miso: really really good! Probably our favorite out of everything honestly. There were three pieces which were all nicely marinated with miso. Some places marinate with too much miso, giving an overwhelming flavor that overshadows the fish. But this dish had a good balance! Spicy Creamy Scallop Roll: also very good! Our second favorite, honestly. The scallop was raw with a nice blend of the spicy mayo. It had a small kick of spiciness which was nice! Spider Roll: wasn't as great as the previous roll. The rolls were huge! But there wasn't much flavor into the roll. Variety Ozen: included miso soup, four piece nigiri, and main course of tempura and chicken kuwayaki styled. The sushi were thick pieces and very fresh! All different types of fishes (and a shrimp). Highly enjoyed it! I didn't realize what kuwayaki chicken was and realized it wasn't the kind of sauce I cared for LOL. My boyfriend enjoyed it though! It had a sweet glaze which didn't really balance well with the sides. Nicely marinated with big pieces! A downside was that everything all came at separate times where the main course came out after all our other foods were almost completed. I felt that the main dish came out a bit too late because if we weren't sharing, the person ordering this would be the last person to finish eating. We also got the Hatsumago sake which my boyfriend really enjoyed almost all of as I'm not a big sake drinker. LOL. Overall, the restaurant is reasonably price with a nice atmosphere for groups. It's simple and understated flavor runs deep in its hot pot veggie and tofu sea kelp broth. They shine in the crispy slightly sweet unagi and black cod collars. You will be amazed how crispy and light the panko oysters are but your eyes will roll in the back of your head when you try the scrumptious oysters Rockefeller. What keeps me coming back is the fresh sashimi platters. It's hard to pick which one is not too big yet always satisfying in choices. The fatty tuna, salmon and scallops taste like the ocean in the best way. Best place to bring out of town guests especially if you reserve a tea room. This review is a mix of past dine-in experiences and one COVID take-out experience. Info during COVID take-out only time: 1. They are taking online orders only. Even if you walk in, they'll tell you to order it online. 2. The online menu items are the only items available. It's limited, and they are not offering any raw fish. 3. Pickup time is 4:30 to 8. Not having raw fish takes away some of the Maneki charm as I fondly recall amazing toro, belly of any fish variety, to-die-for uni. Some of the hot dishes are also not available for now such as fried eggplant and unagi rice. It's almost tragic with lots of 5 stars options that can't be ordered. Food from take-out menu: Black Cod Collar Miso - 5 Stars This is one of Maneki's epic dishes. It's delicious!! Perfectly seasoned, grilled, and generously portioned. Ika Garlic Bata-Yaki - 5 Stars Along with Ika Maru-Yaki, we've had these whole grilled squid in the restaurant. It's not as good anymore by the time we get it home, but at the restaurant (or maybe if you live closer), it's the bomb! Tempura Garlic - 5 Stars This is one of Maneki's most unique offerings. The garlic isn't super strong. It has a wonderful coating, and the drizzled on sauce is a perfect compliment Vegetable Sukiyaki - 4.5 Stars Admittedly, the beef version is a full 5 stars, but I wanted to try the veggie, tofu version. It's missing something, but still very good. Salmon Namban - 2 Stars This was our least favorite dish, and new-to-us. It's on the signature dish portion of the menu. It's served cold, which we didn't know. Maybe it's meant to be a cool, summer dish. Whatever it may be, we're not fond of it. read more

The best Japanese restaurant I ever been to. It is not easy to get reservtions-you have to text their phone number provided on the website and tell them which time and day you want-since you dont even know the options its quite challenging and requires a few tries. But it's a big relief that you don't have to deal with long waits. The owner Jean was there in person. All of the waitstaff were incredibly sweet and helpful. We got the takoyaki, natto and yellowtail, black cod miso, karaage, unagi kamameshi, gyoza, california roll with real crab and salmon roll. And a cold sake. Everything was delicious. If you can get a reservation here, go for it!! It looks like they are operating off reservations primarily and only accepting walk-ins if they have availability. I was lucky to score a day-of reservation for a Wednesday evening. When we arrived, there was a sign that said that they were full for the evening and would not be taking walk-ins. Completely booked on a weekday! :0 The service was amazing and the food was stellar. Everyone was so kind and you definitely felt like you were in someone's home. The ambiance was cozy and comfortable. I tried the variety ozen and the JoJo roll and it was way too much food. The portion was massive that I ended up taking most of the bento home. The JoJo roll was simple and delicious with eel, but the ozen was definitely the star. The variety ozen started with a variety of nirigi. The fish was so fresh and there was the perfect amount of wasabi on each nirigi. The bento that came next had a variety of tempura, rice, chicken, orange segments, cabbage salad, and cucumber salad. If you don't know what to get, try the ozen! I'll definitely be back next time to try some sukiyaki. read more

Maneki, one of Seattle's oldest restaurants, has an abundance of fruity Japanese cocktails infused with shochu and sake, melt-in-your mouth fresh fish, and the best steamed eel over rice! Be sure to make a reservation in advance to sit in the group dining rooms with tatami mats! 1) Service (+): Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The restaurant takes reservations and offers walk-in. For a larger group (4+), definitely reserve one of the Tatami rooms! 2) Ambience (+): I love the authentic and cozy vibe of the restaurant. 3) Food (+): Right after you sit down, be sure to order the Eel Kama Meshi, which takes 30 minutes to prepare but is worth every minute of waiting time! It features deliciously seasoned rice with bamboo shoots and carrots, and perfectly seasoned fresh water eel. All the fish here is very fresh and melt-in-your mouth! We ordered a variety of Nigiri - including the white king Salmon, tuna, and spicy scallop. All were amazing but I highly recommend the latter two. We also ordered the fresh salmon and spider maki. 4) Alcohol/Drinks (+): There is a an assortment of Japanese-inspired cocktails featuring shochu and sake, and I had the saketini, featuring shochu, sake, and yuzu. It was so refreshing and smooth! 5) Value for Money (+): I would say this is one of the best Japanese places in Seattle in terms of value for money! So delicious and affordable, with Nigiri around $10 for 2 sushi pieces, maki rolls under $10, and cocktails for around $12 each. read more

I was so glad to find out that this location had recently opened back up since the pandemic had slowed down business and cause them to close up for a bit. Just a note, at least as of June 2022, they were wanting you to be masked entering and up until you are seated, and then on the way out (for safety), so just take one in case (or ask for one on your arrival). We enjoyed the sushi and meals that were brought out - very authentic and as prepared as expected. I wish we had more people that could have let us go into one of their group rooms (do that if you have a group of 6-8 or so!). Will be back next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

WOW this spot is phenomenal! It's unassuming from the outside but so cozy on the inside. Some rooms have traditional seating on pillows on the floor for larger groups. My friend and I shared a few plates and loved the variety of classic Japanese dishes. We especially loved the sashimi platter! Will definitely be back to have more.
