Ahhh, Christmas at Manny's. Much like our previous experiences of Valentine's Day at Manny's and our anniversary at Manny's, it always proves to be a great place for a chunk of meat and getting your drink on. I don't eat a lot of red meat, so when I do, I tend to make it a treat as much as possible. This, of course, means filet mignon. Unlike my experiences at too many other places in the metro, Manny's cooked my beef properly medium-rare. The salt and pepper crust was flavorful and delicious. And why did they give me bearnaise? Properly awesome meat needs no sauce. My husband didn't care to share any for his bone-in tenderloin, which is to say, he was also happy with his meat chunk. They may push the hashbrowns, but honestly, get the loaded mashed potatoes instead. They're exactly what needs to go with a meat pile. Any of the veggie sides are similarly solid, with the garlic creamed spinach being a nice garlic punch in the face if you are inclined to desire such things. There's nothing negative to say about the service. And although the cocktail menu itself is kind of meh, the bartenders will pour hard and heavy with anything you order. We had Manhattans that were more like a cup of rye with a vermouth afterthought. Two of those and I haven't been that drunk in ages. My husband certainly appreciated that. I know others may not speak terribly highly about brunch or lunch or whatever, but I refuse to shatter the illusion by going to Manny's for anything other than what they do best. May I just say - Manny's Steakhouse is a spectacular restaurant, one of a kind, perfect for a special occasion and definitely the place to go when you are in this awesome city, visiting or on business. It was named one of the Top Ten Steakhouses in the United States! My husband and I celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary here last night. We were treated like royalty. I would give this place 10 stars if I could! They brought us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary - Bailey's Irish Cream Mousse Cake. I was so impressed with this place, I can't wait to go back! It's not a cheap restaurant (it's not supposed to be) You absolutely get what you pay for - in service and quality of food. If you are a steak lover, this is the place to be. Expect to spend about $60 for a steak, but it will be the most delicious steak you will ever eat. All the sides and potato dishes are big enough to share with 2 or 3 people, and they bring out delicious rye bread and a sweet raisin bread with butter. Our server was wonderful - he was very knowledgeable about the different cuts of meat and the lobster tails and he was super attentive to us. I had the large Filet Mignon, done medium well, and it was perfect. My husband had the dry-aged Bone-In New York Strip which was also perfect. We shared the Loaded Mashed Potatoes. We had to try the Apple Smoked Bacon for an appetizer, and it was almost like an entree by itself! The most delicious bacon you will ever eat. oh haaaay manny's!!! first of all, let me just preface by saying that Manny's serves up the best steak between chicago and san francisco and there is a lot of corn fed goodness in these parts! If you're looking for the quintessential steakhouse experience in mpls/st paul...look no further. This place has their routine down like none other...the service is no frills, knowledgeable (i overheard many a fantastic wine recommendation along with random beef knowledge), the sides are out of this world and the atmosphere is fantastic. A few thoughts on my evening: 1. A great place to celebrate! My sister got engaged and her new hubby surprised her by having our entire families at manny's when they arrived...the hostesses and servers were almost as excited as we were - which really added to the whole experience. 2. the steak cart. yum. there is alot of meat on there. I usually order the small filet, which is delectable...but on the recommendation of the server, i tried the bone in tenderloin and HEYO!!! new favorite cut of steak. I also had some nibbles of my dad's prime rib and i must say - it was right up there taste and texture wise...and you certainly get alot of meat for your buck. 3. the sides. ooooh yes the sides. giant, perfectly steamed spears of asparagus with bearnaise.....deliciously buttery hash browns.....succulent mushrooms.....we didn't get my favorite - the creamed spinach...but trust me, its fantastical. 4. dessert. giant brownie sundae supreme awesomeness. one giant thick, creamy chocolate brownie/cake topped with ooodles of fresh whipped cream, strawberries, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. seriously spectacular. now - a moment to discuss the clientele. If you are a single gal, as i am, drop everything, put on a "sexy office" (yea, you all know what i'm talking about) outfit and head to the manny's bar. HOLY COW (no pun intended) the place is literally crawlin with men folk...a gal can't walk from the table to the bathroom without being looked at like a steak on the cart....which, if you're in the right mood, can be just fine and dandy! but seriously...go to the bar...get a petite filet or a yummy burger and just wait to be showered with martinis and don draper types. read more

Just amazing. Maybe it's because we went with a regular. You know, the guy that fifteen different employees come up to and chat with during dinner; the guy that knows your waiter, and therefore the waiter comps the appetizer, drinks and dessert. It was a show. One big crazy experience. And yeah, I know the next time I go back won't be nearly as good (unless we go with "that guy" again), but seriously, it was great. ***Only for a splurge*** Juicy, 'melt-in-your-mouth' beef. Thick, flavorful lobster. And one word for the side choice: HASH BROWNS! This place is worth it (for a splurge). The price of food is astronomical. Even lobster shouldn't cost $100 for a tail. But, there is something about going to Manny's that makes it worth it on a 'special occasion'. The service is excellent. By the end of your eating experience, you feel like you have a new friend in the waiter. The food really is delicious, but like I said. I was in the Mini for a conference and happened upon Manny's by accident. I ordered the bacon slices as an appetizer. Thick cut, knife and fork bacon. I'm the king of bacon, and I had never had bacon so good. I followed with the ribeye. A huge pound and a half plus steak with delicious, but unnecessary truffle fries on the side. Highly disappointed. Would probably never recommend or visit ever again. The steaks- we ordered the Porterhouse and Bone In Ribeye. Both tasted bland as ever. Basically like they just threw a slab of unseasoned, unsalted, untouched meat on the pan. Now, I've never been here before, so if that's how it's supposed to be then they've done it correctly. But that was the worst thing that I've ever paid for. Also, we ordered the porterhouse at a Med and the Ribeye at Med Rare. The porterhouse came out like a Med Rare, identical to the Ribeye. Another fail. The sides- Loaded Mashed Potatoes and Mushrooms. They were both nothing special. I would say the Potatoes were better than mushrooms. There was just a nice kick to it! Saved the whole night. We also got the Cesar Salad and it was an interesting size because they were pretty long, not like the usual cut-up, one inch sections! I'm not one to complain about price when I get great food, but this was just disrespectful. Again, I have never had a more bland steak in my life. I rarely get the opportunity to dine at what I call "expense account" restaurants - because they are simply unaffordable unless someone else is paying the check. That didn't stop the restaurant from being completely sold out on a Monday night at 8 p.m. We had reservations, so no matter. The wait staff was very attentive and very good up selling everything. That didn't stop us from ordering a "seafood tower" which I thought was an entrée - it was $90. Yes, $90. An appetizer for 4. Then we ordered dinner. I ordered the lamb chops which were very good, but maybe a bit chewy. I figured this was the smallest portion of red meat as the steaks ran from 8 to 54 ounces. Two other dining companions order 24 ounce steaks, which were huge, but they finished them off. We ordered the hash browns and asparagus, which were expensive and really too much for a party of 4. The hash browns were served on a bed of oil that must have been draining out of them. Asparagus is asparagus. The desserts that went by were gargantuan. I dunno, to me it all seems very unhealthy. And with dinner and 3 glasses of wine, I'm sure the check added up to $350, not including the 20% tip. read more

After getting the cold shoulder at McCormick & Schmick's and walking out in disgust. We stepped back out onto the street to be asked by two gentlemen where Manny's steakhouse was. We pointed them in the right direction and followed. Went in, and were seated quickly, with a friendly coat check. Our waiter brought an entire table of raw food for us to inspect. We lovingly named the lobster 'Gary'. The boyfriend boasted the oysters, and I found the scallops benedict worth bragging about. He ordered the baseball steak which really should be called a softball steak. I had the small filet mignon. Both were cooked to perfection. Had some asparagus as a side, it was huge and a bit tough. The mashed potatoes were extreme and were over powered by the smoky bacon flavor. Was a bit put off by the random children wandering about but it wasn't a deal breaker. $200 later we walked away full and happy. read more

We had a birthday extravaganza weekend that ended with a meal at Manny's. My husband & I had never been before so we were equally excited. This is definitely a special occasion place unless you're a straight-up baller. After we ordered some bubbly our waiter brought the meat cart to our table to show us what they have & how gigantic everything is. I have no idea how one person can finish a steak that is the size of a 4 year old. The portions are out of control huge. We started with oysters on a half shell which were just okay. For my entree I ordered the special for the evening which was potato-crusted sea bass. Ryan ordered the bone-in tenderloin with a half order of mushrooms and a side of bearnaise sauce. We also ordered a half order of the loaded mash potatoes. My sea bass was delicious & I'm proud to say I finished everything on my plate. Ryan, on the other hand, put a large dent into his steak but ended up boxing up the rest of it. The half order of the potatoes was still a ridiculous portion. We ate the rest of them for lunch today. Very good & still worth ordering, though. Rather than the signature bread pudding dessert, we asked for key lime pie (birthday dessert is comped). The size, once again, was abnormally large. "The food may have been excellent, but I was choking on the prices." Manny's was a great experience and my one liner is a bit of a joke, after all, you get what you pay for. My buddy Ty highly recommend I try the Manny's Burger- so I did. The GF had the Shrimp Scampi and the sis had the Fillet Mignon. Well, here's how it went down: The Manny's Burger? Freakin' delicious. This thing had to at least been 2 lbs of center cut goodness layered with pulled meat at the bottom and fried onions. It could have seriously fed me and Larry the Live Lobster who rolls from table to table. I ordered it Medium and I have to say that it was full of flavor and every bite felt like I was biting into a chunk of cotton candy from the state fair - just melt in my mouth. The GF said her shrimp was plump and juicy and oh-so-good. It was sauteed with just the perfect amount of butter, peppers and California garlic. Full disclosure fellas: Do not kiss your gal after she's had this plate - for at least 2 hours. Floss. Brush. Repeat. The sis had the fillet mignon and also expressed it was easily one of the best she has ever tasted. She said it was full of flavor, very tender and actually got better with every bite. She recommended it and said it would definitely be her go-to meal next time we dined here. As for the sides we shared the incredible mashed potatoes, hashed browns, fries and the Mexican spicy elote which wasn't on the menu. All of them were equally great tasting. My husband's brother was in town for work and we met him near his hotel and tried Manny's for dinner. All three of us were impressed. The place was clean and nice, service was great. The cocktails weren't weak. As for the steak (yes, we all had steak) it was delicious. Cooked to perfection and flavorful. Needless to say, although this is nearly and hour's drive from us we'll go back. It was that good. Since it's more "upscale" I wouldn't recommend taking babies or young children here. read more

Rating 2.5 Well I was pretty disappointed in stopping in here today. We swung in at 11:00am for a nice lunch. I already figured I would have the Prime Burger after previewing the menu online, so it was a easy menu choice for me. My wife chose the Steak Sandwich and off we were. The place is pretty fancy with white linen and all, but it was dead. Maybe two other tables with people at them. The waitress was very nice and the staff very pleasant. We got a complimentary cinnamon pastry with warm caramel topping. It was delicious. The food arrived quickly and we jumped in. We both ordered fries with our meal. The fries were crispy and tasted fine. Nothing special. The biggest problem with them was that a third of them were fused together in a clump. You had to tear them apart to eat them. Fail #1. I ordered my burger medium and there was nary any pink meat to be found. Fail #2. And finally, the bun was super dry. It was literally crumbing apart as I was eating the burger. Fail #3. I mean for a place like this, it is almost seems inexcusable. The bar was set pretty high walking in here, and it was a big bummer. The taste of the burger was alright, nothing spectacular about it. My wife's sandwich was better. The steak was tender and perfectly cooked (medium). With all the fixings on, she was expecting more flavor. Kind of blah. Overall, great service. The food, not so much. Manny's consistently sits in the top 5 best restaurants in Minnesota. The service is top notch, the food is even better, and when you go there you are treated like you belong there. Their steaks are consistently high quality and their chefs know how to prepare them. My usual is the New York Strip; I personally enjoy this because of the marbling consistency throughout the cut and when prepared correctly (as is always done at Manny's) the seared fat and gristle on the outside edges are the perfect mixture of crispy and chewy. The only suggestion I have is to offer an aged Kansas City Strip (bone-in Strip Steak), the bone keeps the meat even more juicy (as if that were even possible) and offers more flavor. Sticker shock is expected at the end of the night, but every once in a while when you have something to celebrate definitely keep Manny's in mind. Note: A few weeks ago when I was there last I literally sat 6 feet away from Leslie Fraiser; rich people gotta eat too! Being that there are not that many high end restaurants in Minnesota, on a Friday or Saturday night you will almost always see some celebrity or star at Manny's. Keep on kill'n it!!! read more

My absolute favorite Steakhouse in the U.S. Excellent steak, lobster, salmon and all side veggies were amazing! I'll give Manny's 10 stars if I can. I live too far from Mpls now so I won't be able to indulge in their fine food and unprecarious service but I have tons of memories at Manny's from the 90s and they are ALL SO GOOD!!! I really hadn't had anything bad here, by that, I mean, not only their steaks but their lobster, salmon, huge asparagus spears, gigantic baked potato, and their hash brown (? the cooked potato) were all fabulous! Even as a poor college student at the U, I couldn't resist going to Manny's at least every 6 months with my carnivore friends! :D If I were there now, I would probably be dining there every month! I haven't been able to find any steakhouse around the country that gets even close to Manny's. The only other place I uttered a big blissful "aaahhhh" was Gallagher's at NYNY in Las Vegas. As far as steakhouses go, it's hard to wean me away from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. But I had the opportunity to eat at one of the Top 10 independent steakhouses in the nation -- so I did. The company I was with was lame, but the waiter and service was top notch. I ordered the porterhouse cooked medium and we got the asparagus, hash browns, and mushrooms. Wow -- WAY too much food for 2 people. Also ordered a bottle of wine but I forget what is was. After about 10-15 minutes of eating, I realized why I like Ruth's Chris' better -- my steak went cold. And started tasting a bit salty from all the seasoning. It was still good, but I expected a bit more. You see, Ruth's Chris serves their steak on 100+ degree plates and the steaks are sizzling in a small pool of butter. Yum.... =) But all in all, it was good. Not sure if I'd pay that much to eat there again, but definitely worth a visit. Oh, and the place was just a bit too bright for me. I'm used to very dark brown/red colors at restaurants and I felt like I was eating during the daytime. But there was some seating available in the bar/lounge area -- just have to request it, apparently. read more

I've tried several high end steakhouses working in public accounting in my previous career and this was by far the best, better than Morton's, Ruth Chris, Alexander's or Birk's, all of which are great restaurants. I went to Manny's when I was in Minneapolis for training. My old roommate from Notre Dame lives in Minneapolis and he suggested we should all try the place out. Four of us got reservations here on a weekday, which was a little difficult but not too hard. No charge if you cancel your reservation. They start out by bringing out actual cut pieces of meat and throwing a lobster at your table. The waiter was quite amusing, seems the natural aura of the place. Was very honest and told us that anything but the steak was a bad idea. I got the new york fly strip steak and it was just great. Medium rare, and so tender that you did not even need a knife. Using any side sauce would be unjust. We ordered one side which was big enough for four guys. Was also reasonably priced, under $10 a side. Ordered a bottle of wine to split between three people and the waiter recommended a great $40 Cabernet, surprising that he did not try to oversell. Portions were great, sides were enormous, and for a high end steakhouse it was very reasonably priced, $80 per person with appetizers, steak, sides, and wine. One of my favourite places to eat in Minneapolis. The new location is fantastic and when I'm in Minneapolis, far more convenient than the old. My only complaint that even with reservations you wait and wait for your table. This has every single time. Fortunately, they have a well-stocked bar and some of the nicest port I've ever drank. The service is brilliant and so is the atmosphere. Treated like landed gentry, you can lose track of time here when you are with your friends. The food was fantastic. I hop about from the lobster to the filet mignon - both are gorgeous. The filet mignon, rare, melts in your mouth like butter. I've ate at some fine establishments with 'great' names attached to it, all around the world, but this repeatedly returns to be my favourite. The "best" steakhouse in Minneapolis (from my polling of locals) is really nothing spectacular, especially considering the price point for this city. Yes, service was fine, although it didn't make any sense to wait with my reservation and open tables. But, more importantly, the filet was not and way too dry and tasteless. And I ordered medium-rare. A good steak should not need bernaise or whatever other sauce to make great as well. And if it is dry-aged, then it's certainly tastes like it was done for a day. As for the sides, the specialty hash-browns with onions is a total pass (tasteless and too oily). Never have I seen creamed spinach with full spinach leaves, is this a regional thing? Didn't fit the side dish name at least based on taste either. The better tasting things we had were the lobster cakes, shrimp scampi, and the Manny's (double layer) brownie a la mode dessert; but I don't need to pay comparatively high prices to eat this at a steakhouse. With those extremely large portions, such high prices, and with unimpressive food, it's something to remember not to come back to. I usually don't go to steak chains, but I'd go to Ruth's or Capital Grille over this. read more

The basics of the restaurant: Service: Excellent. I could not have asked for better. Our waiter knew the menu well, knew a lot about the cuts of meat, and stayed engaged with us but not to the point of being annoying. One thing I particularly liked about him was when he took our order he asked us to describe your idea of a perfectly cooked steak. Asked some follow up questions. They HE assigned if that was rare, medium rare, etc. The result was I got a steak cooked exactly the way I wanted it. Five Stars. Ambience: Pretty simple dining room. It is a big room. I personally like a warmer and cozier style. Mannys has a rolling menu where they bring all the different cuts of meats to your table to shock and awe you. That was pretty cool the first time around but our table was near the place where they stored the rolling menu so I got to see it a lot. And this is just me but booths in a restaurant like this? I mean the only reason you put in booths is to maximize your floor space. Normally I would not say anything but this is a $125 per person meal. For a place that was a bit less money - 4 stars. I give it 3 stars just because if I am going to spend that kind of money I want a lot. Three Stars. Normally this is where I have the header Food, but in fairness I am going to break it down to three sections: Steaks, Sides, Drinks. Steaks: The steak was excellent. The steak was really really large. The steak was expensive. $54.00 for the New York Strip or the Porterhouse. Overall if I compare my experiences with this steak against other top steak houses this one came in at number 6. Not bad considering the company they are keeping. Five Stars. Sides: This was disappointing. Mannys is one these places where you do not get a side with your steak. You have to order sides Family style. I find this annoying. We ordered two sides. The mushroom. 4 Stars. The asparagus. 2.5 Stars. The asparagus was really large. I like it younger and tenderer. But what was bad is when you have asparagus you break off the woody stem at the bottom before you cook it. They did not do that. Over all we will say 3 Stars. Drinks: Great bar and wine selection but a tad high priced. Over all 4.5 Stars. Cost versus Value: There were two of us and we dropped $250 after taxes and tip. That is right $250. I know the steak was great. I know the service was great. I know bar was great. But frankly if I was paying (I wasn't.) for this meal I would have had buyer's remorse. There are a lot better values in Minneapolis. But if you want the prestige of eating at Mannys and a great steak. Here you go. Personally I would give it a 3 Stars. Overall a 4 Star Experience. I'll keep this short. You will not find a better steak restaurant anywhere and I have been to nearly all. Not surprising because this is the keynote of the MLPS like Burns in Tampa, and Peter Luger in Brooklyn. At a recent show I ate here 3 times in a row (2 dinner one lunch). Had the 65 day dry aged NY Strip. That was an interesting and excellent experience. The cheese cake for desert is incredible and MASSIVE enough for two big eaters or 3.5 normal stomachs. I scarfed it down solo though like a member of the Nights Watch on a long patrol aver the wall. Liquor and wine as expected for any high end stake eatery. read more

This meal is now known to my office mates and I as the "beef with a side of beef" meal. We had the applewood smoked bacon for an appetizer. Don't mock that until you've had the bacon. This is not the bacon you get at the diner down the street. I had the sirloin for dinner. Honestly, I could have split it with someone else. That was way more beef than any single human being could eat but if I could have, I would have. Manny's was spacious enough (and not over crowded) so you could have a conversation. Big and Bold! On a recent Saturday evening, my dining companion and I went to Manny's. Neither one of us had ever been there and we are in the process of comparing all of the so called 'great places' in town. This was our last stop. As you can see, I'm not a meat eater, but I do like pork chops. Knowing full well they have pork chops, we dive right in at 8:30 on a Saturday evening. Here is what we had - Great service - service was excellent and she was spot on. I love how the come out with a 'meat cart' to show you everything. A loud dining experience - the place was too loud to have a nice conversation. It was not what I expected at all. Excellent cocktails - 2 perfect Lemon Drops, one so so Blueberry extravaganza, good wine, and some cucumber martini. Out of this world truffle fries - seriously - I bet I couldn't put my arms around the bowl. The couple next to us had them. We typically shy away from starches, but they looked too good! Note - gave me heartburn. Rockin' caraway rye bread (think tuna melt bread at Cecil's) and dark rye bread - see above - too good to resist! Caesar salad - good, but a little too lemony for me. Beet Salad - ask him, didn't want to even try. The 3 medley pork chop - 1 breaded, 1 grilled, and 1 Cajun. I liked the breaded one, but was so full from everything else I took the other 2 home. Some gigantic steak - Dining Companion really enjoyed. Asparagus - no hollandaise - grilled to perfection. And because we hadn't had enough, tart and flavorful Key Lime Pie. Great taste and texture. Now, I liked Manny's, but I didn't love it. The draw backs for me were the noise level and lack of non red meat specials. I truly pictured something more quiet and low key. I was way off base. I would have like to have seen a special of pasta or chicken, or something else, but I think I'm the only one. Next to the Capital Grille, Manny's is the best steak in Minneapolis. This old school (everything from the walls, to the velvet chairs, to the old wait staff) is a Minneapolis Staple. If you have to seal a deal with someone from Minneapolis then there is no better place. Remember nothing warms good business like a butter-knife ribeye! The steaks are just phenomenal. I've been to several steak houses (what can I say? the bf likes his steak), and while I've had other steaks that were the same quality, I've never had one that was better. The hash browns are good, but *gasp* I've actually had better elsewhere when I've gone out for brunch. While it quite possibly may be a heart-attack in a dish, I'd go for the loaded mashed potatoes. Now for the green portion of the meal (and I'm not referring to environmentally conscious). The asparagus and hollandaise is insanely good. I'm still trying to find out where you can find an asparagus stalk that's so thick! My only complaint: some of the seating is comprised of a long booth on one side which is broken up by individual tables, but it can feel like the couple next to you is sitting right on top of you listening to every aspect of your conversation. read more

I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said, but I will try to give another perspective to strengthen the case for this place. It's really good. I went alone as I was traveling for work. Some coworkers encouraged me to go and since I had my corporate card, it seemed like the right time. What I didn't know was that it I would ring up such a bill that I didn't feel like I could rightfully charge such an extravagant meal to the company. Don't let that dissuade you from going. I started off with an Aviation cocktail because I wanted to assess the quality of the cocktails. This one was very good. I don't drink a lot of Aviations, but the fact that it was on the menu is a plus to me. The gentleman next to me ordered a margarita and I ordered one because it just sounded good. I didn't even finish the Aviation but I needed to try the margarita. It was OK, but nothing remarkable. While sitting in the bar, I had the opportunity to watch the bartenders at work and I identified a key element that would make the drinks better...shake the damn cocktail. At most the drinks were shaken two little shakes. My margarita hadn't even been shaken enough to thoroughly chill it. Again, don't let that dissuade you from going. The spirit, wine, and beer menu are extensive. Just don't expect an out-of-this-world cocktail. Before you order, they bring around the meat cuts so you can select your entree. I've never seen such a presentation. Not only do they have some of the largest "single serving" cuts of meat I've ever seen, they actually bring around a live lobster. It's quite a show. I ordered the petite filet or what they call the "lady's cut." I also ordered the Caesar salad, asparagus, and hashbrowns. It was all amazing. I've never had asparagus that good. I can't even tell you why it was so good. If you go (which you should) get the asparagus. The hashbrowns were also really good, but they just didn't seem to mesh with my amazing steak. If I were doing it again, I would choose a different potato. If I were there for breakfast, I would certainly order the hash browns. My filet was tender, tasty, and plentiful. It came with a garlic herb sauce that only enhanced the flavor. After it was said and done, I ordered the key lime dessert which is apparently their hallmark dessert. As with everything else, it was darn good. Next time, I will try the bread pudding or banana cream pie. When I go again, I won't go alone. This is not a place one can fully enjoy alone. Nor should you. The portions are enormous and the sides are all family style. They are designed to be shared. Even though my waiter (Robert) was great and brought out half portions, they were still gigantic. Go there. Go with others. Go with a fat wallet because you can't fully experience Manny's on a tight budget. read more
