    Pastry selection

With 5 locations in the Northern California area, Manresa is consistent in delivering quality pastries like their kouign amann, monkey bread, and croissants. The prices are on the higher end but with just one look, you can tell how skilled the bakers are in laminating the dough and kneading the dough. The pastries always look airy, consistently shaped, and uniform throughout. They serve Verve coffee as well as a small selection of teas and juices. The breakfast menu is small but they have a wonderful selection of mouthwatering pastries that will definitely leave you tempted. Manresa offers everything from quiches, loaves of bread, cookies, pies, and muffins. Some highlights that should not be missed include: *kouign amann - Probably the top of my kouign amann list. This pastry is incredibly delicious with its flaky, buttery layers and caramelized finish. *lemon pistachio olive oil cake - Lemon taste in subtle but the pistachio flavor shines brightly in this loaf cake. Its on the drier side but still very much enjoyable and soft. *chocolate walnut cookies - Cookies are always a solid option here. These have a bold chocolate flavor with a soft chewy texture. *chocolate croissant- you can never go wrong with a chocolate croissant here. The chocolate is rich and high quality, while the croissant is so incredibly airy and full of light delicate layers. The service at this location is not super friendly. They are very straight forward and to the point so I would not expect too much of a full friendly experience here. It seems like it may hurt them to even smile at a customer. If you're looking for a quality, higher-end bakery, I always recommend Manresa. This location is street parking and has no indoor seating. There's only a few outside benches so keep that in mind if you are planning on dining in.

This is a smaller location but still had the high quality, occasionally crave-worthy, breads and pastries that Manresa is known for. Plus good coffee, official from verve but I've noticed cat&cloud on the shelf so I wonder... My favorites: Kouign Amann - Pronounced "queen-a-mahn" If you haven't had one before, you should as this is a legendary pastry and Manresa's version is very good. It's a combo of sweet, salty, sticky, buttery, crispy, flaky, and tender. Monkey Bread - think cinnamon rolls made with bite sized biscuits. Buttery brown sugar goodness but too sweet to eat a lot. They make a latte with the monkey bread syrup! Olive Ciabatta - ciabatta is an underrated bread with large air pockets and a crispy crust. While it's good for sandwiches, I like this version with butter or olive oil. Levain - a sourdough with a special yeast which enhances the texture. Delicious. Some days it's very busy but the servers don't seem overwhelmed.

Connie W. brought me here and said the vienoiseries were excellent. She's never led me wrong so I grabbed a baguette, kouign amann, croissant, monkey bread, and coffee cake. It might've been an off day for the croissant (or it's better fresh from the oven), but it was soft and not particularly flaky. I was absolutely obsessed with the kouign amann and the monkey bread though; I've never had monkey bread like this. Both are richly caramelized, buttery, and absolutely delicious. I think the kouign amann actually rival my favorites at Dominique Ansel Bakery (NYC), Metropolitan (Philly), and B Patisserie (SF, Oahu). I only had a bite of the coffee cake because it was for someone else, but it was so delightful I wanted more immediately. I haven't tried the baguette yet but I'm already very excited! I haven't devoured pastries so fast in a while.

Sunday afternoon, no line no customers. 2 guys behind the counter, younger and older gentleman. Older guy looked like he was in a bad mood, looked at me and walked away, younger guy was friendly, greeted. I asked if they had sourdough loafs, the older guy didn't even look at me and just pointed at one of the loafs, jeez. What the heck happened to this place. Bread was stale, hard... Came in a clear see through plastic bag, no handle. No paper bag or nothing... Walked around downtown holding a loaf of bread like it was stolen

    "Babka" roll?
    Aiza B.

Still a hit-or-miss place. I wanted some babka and saw that there as a loaf for $40, but I wasn't going to spend for a loaf of what felt like stale bread. I instead asked if they had slices of that babka loaf, and the lady pointed me out to what looked like a hot cross bun, but was named "babka". Well, this was not at all like a babka. It was oily, foam-like texture, and sweet. Gross. I much prefer the babka at Oren's Hummus over this.

Arrived at this bakery around 10am and pleased there were still basically everything available. Got the Kougan Amade and the cheese scone for something savory. The Amade was pleasant to eat, kind of like a crossiant when u bite in but sweet with a crunchy hard carmely bottom. Doesn't taste too sweet. The scone was delicious. Very flavorful and cheesy and oniony all at the same time, not too dry. Ordered the monkey bread latte with almond milk and it was very delicious with cinnamon-y taste and molasses and again, not too sweet!! This place has locations in Campbell and Los Gatos as well! Well it is very good.

This cute little bakery shop located on State Street in Downtown Las Altos makes the best monkey bread in the entire Bay Area! What is monkey bread you ask? Imagine a kouign amann on steroids! More buttery. More sugary. It's crispy and flaky on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. Each piece of the monkey bread breaks off into little small bite sized nuggets covered in the perfect mix of caramelized butter and sugar. Pop one in your mouth and be ready to be in pastry heaven. If you're coming on a weekend, be sure to show up early as they sell out quickly!

    Chocolate croissant

Was in Los Altos recently and was looking for a good bakery for some croissants. Manresa Bread popped up immediately on Yelp. It's located to the right of Linden Tree Books on State Street. There's plenty of street parking out front and a decent size lot behind the store. Manresa sells 3 different types of croissants; plain, chocolate, and almond. A few muffins, breads, and a couple of loaves. It's not a huge selection. While the almond croissant contained a generous amount of almond paste, the chocolate croissant was not so lucky. There was very little chocolate. Their plain croissant was very flaky and buttery though. They also serve a variety of espresso and coffee drinks. The service was OK. The employees weren't particularly friendly or welcoming but at the same time weren't rude. There were "just there". I guess I expected a bit more enthusiasm or warmth from the staff.

Garlic monkey bread and croissant. Quite disappointed given its reputation. Not enough butter with the croissant. Monkey bread is ok. Not enough cheese, not enough garlic.

Great concept, underneath are racks with baked goods

    Do they have seating?

No indoor seating. Outside to the left is a city bench, to the right are couches in front of the children's book store

Do they have gluten free, dairy free breads?

In July 2025, they had a wheat free Cinnamon Blueberry Coffee Cake Muffin but I didn't see any GF breads

    Dairy free breads available?

I can't recall that they have some sorts of milk bread, therefore all of their breads should be dairy free.

Folks, do they close early if the all bread is sold out? I came to the shop at 2:30 pm today and the door is locked and selves were empty

Yeah, they do close early if they are sold out. Their web page says the same. https://www.manresabread.com

When we added a hot chocolate with the server, nothing came out after 15 minutes. So I walked in. There were 5 staff behind the counter. 3 were on their smartphones. 2 were joking with each other. When I finally got one of their attention, I asked about the drink. They said it would come out. Kiddo needed to go to the bathroom. Floorboards were rotten and torn on the walk over. Grimy, gross sink with that film on the door that you see in dive bars. We wait 10 minutes. Still no drink. I go back in with the boy and stand over the the barista so that they'd hand us a hot chocolate. Food was good, but with service and ambience like that, might as well go to a Starbucks. The menu will be current, the drinks will come out fast, the bathrooms won't be grimy, and the servers will give you the time of day.

So a few days after returning from an overseas trip, I made a lunch reservation with a friend. Apparently, reservations are required if you want a proper meal experience. At $35 per person for lunch, including tip but excluding drinks and additions, it still seemed like good value. Finding parking during lunch time in downtown Los Altos was surprisingly difficult. There were no spots available on the Main Street, so I had to park in the lot behind the buildings. As I walked inside, I admired the high ceilings, curved alcoves and glass-enclosed dining room by the entrance. The entire space seemed to be illuminated by a central skylight. Aaron is a co-owner of Tal Palo along with his partner, Chef Adriana. He greeted and complimented me on my Mikkeller Taipei t-shirt. Aaron told us he was once the co-owner of an Oakland bar specializing in Belgian ale called The Trappist and subsequently knew Mikkel's brother, Jeppe, who founded Evil Twin Brewery quite well. It was cool to meet a fellow artist and Renaissance man. Fittingly, the beautiful space was largely designed by Aaron. We had our choice of seating. It didn't seem as if there were any two tables and chairs that were alike. Each part of the dining room was unique. There's a really nice patio in the back with a cool huge mural on the wall that is undoubtedly popular during warmer months. We chose a nice broad two top table near the entrance, lit brightly by the skylight above it. Chef Adriana introduced herself and brought by what was essentially an elote muffin, and offered it as an optional appetizer. We took her up on it. It was delicious and buttery with the texture of corn kernels, not simply pureed into a batter. I also ordered a Cafe de Olla, which was pleasantly sweet and blended with cinnamon and spices. She then brought a plate with skillfully prepared green salad. It was then clear that each dish was meant to be shared family-style. The portion-size of each dish is about the size of an individual portion, but there were three dishes included in the lunch course. I could see how this might be an issue for those who eat larger portions, leaving them unsatisfied. Me and my friend don't generally eat a ton, so this was perfectly fine for us. Next up was the highlight of the meal, Chilaquiles Verde. The egg was perfectly fried atop tortilla chips that still had a bit of crispness to them. The tomatillo salsa was a perfect balance of flavor, tanginess, spice and temperature. It was a superb dish that outpaces any chilaquiles that I've been able to find locally, and I've certainly been trying out many for the past six months in search of the best one. I think Chef Adriana's version at Tal Palo may be the winner. There was one more interesting dish remaining: fried quesadillas served with a creamy red beet mole sauce. The quesadillas were light and fluffy, made from masa rather than flour. The beet mole sauce had pine nuts and sesame seeds and several other ingredients blended into it. Very unique and creative rendition unlike any mole I had ever tried. The overall experience at Tal Palo was very unique. There is no set menu, and you are served whatever Chef Adriana has prepared that day. So one needs to approach this restaurant with an open mind and leave preconceptions at the door. As I mentioned earlier, the shared portions might not be enough for people with a higher caloric intake. If these are showstoppers, this is probably not the right place for you. I personally really enjoyed the concept and experience. I look forward to trying their dinner course and going to their workshops for things like making tamales.
