    The rebel within

This is not an actual store it's just a pop up at the Palo Alto farmers market on the weekends! I was hoping to run into Emily Mariko while I was here and though I didn't, I did see that they had the rebel within and had to try one of these infamous muffins. Pretty good, but I would recommend it warmed up for sure. The egg was absolute perfection and the salt that it came with was super fun but the cornbread muffin itself was okay for me. They have a ton of other yummy looking baked goods though, I'll try and stop by another time!

Craftsman and wolves was not as good at the farmers market as it is in SF. I got the rebel within. And the seasonal kouign aman. Both were good flavor wise however I feel like it was not as fresh as it could be. There was so many pastries here and I wanted to try them all. It will definitely have to be back to try them all but will most likely hold off until I get to San Francisco location.

Our haul. Egan's Addiction was eaten before the picture was taken!

Summary: Their offerings do live up to the hype! For those of us that live in the Peninsula/South Bay, you do not have to trek up to The City as long as you can wait patiently until a Sunday morning. That is because C&W is at the California Avenue Farmer's Market in Palo Alto on that day! You can preorder on their website or purchase what is available at their kiosk. The Rebel Within was delicious after being reheated per their website. We also tried the following: Egan's Addiction, Chai Lemon Ricotta muffin, Morning Bun, and Impossibly Bulgogi Scone. All were delicious! We definitely plan on going back on another weekend to try their Crx Loaf and Crx Pudding!

If you live in Palo Alto, don't miss out on getting these amazing pastries at the farmer's market! Although they are famous for their Rebel Within, I actually enjoyed a lot of their other pastries a lot more! The havartadelli croissant (ham and cheese) is super flaky and the sauce inside really enhances the flavor! Their seasonal mistress truffle croissant stack and xiaolongbao croissants are amazing with runny egg in the middle - highly recommend warming them up at 350 F for 5 mins. Their morning bun is also super delicious and flaky, not too sweet - again, recommend warming it up. Be sure to place your orders online to skip the line and not miss out on the ones that get sold out quickly!

~ L O C A T I O N ~ Cal Ave Farmers Market, which can be a little crowded! Very nondescript black canopy stall on the same side as Izzy's/Joanie's with a fancy display case. There often is a line! ~ S E R V I C E ~ They cannot warm up items for you, so you purchase the items to take home and warm up at home. They sell out FAST. And they have weekend specials! If you have the foresight, I highly recommend pre-ordering! ~ F O O D / P A S T R I E S ~ Ham and Cheese Croissant $5 Make sure to toast it when you get home! The lamination is great! And the ham is very high quality. The Rebel Within $8.50 The cost of this little muffin is almost inhibitory but it's worth it! Don't let the price tag scare you away. This is one impressive muffin! Make sure to warm it up! THIS IS A MUST because the egg inside is soft-boiled and then refrigerated so its cold inside. You want to warm it up so the runny egg is warm! Preheat oven to around 400-450F and pop this little guy in for 5 minutes! Then cut it down the middle and watch that golden yolk runnnnnnnnn! This is served with tabasco salt that's packaged in a 1.5 mL microcentrifuge tube! Don't forget about it! The salt is a great pairing with the egg! The muffin is delectably moist and has a delicious caramelized onion flavor! This is the scotch egg of baked goods! ~ O V E R A L L ~ Pricy, pricy! But to be honest its worth it. Very instagrammable and very delicious lololol. Some places aren't worth it, but this place is! I will be back to try the kouign amanns!

COVID review This is a SF bakery but you can order online and pickup on Sunday in Palo Alto's farmers market. Super smart move for the South Bayers! So I did just that with 3 items, the Rebel Within, CRX pudding (just for weekends) and Cocoa carrot muffin. It was such a joy when I cut open the Rebel and the egg yolk oozes out! It's just perfect! When I picked up my items, they were all cold and I asked instructions in case I wanted to heat them up. In the end I didn't. I was told to put it in 415F for 8 minutes. Felt a hassle to spend so much time preheat the oven and warm it for so short time. But if I did that the egg might be fully cooked. As my friend told me she didn't get a soft yolk in her SF store visit. So really happy overall! CRX Pudding - it's so soft and silky inside and tastes good! But I just can't tell what's inside. Cocoa carrot muffin: I like it not sweet with enough cocoa flavor! Well, can't find the carrot but still very satisfied with the not-so-sweet flavor. Overall a big thumbs up!

10/2/21 - Dark Chocolate Croissant (CRX). SKIP. Worse than a regular croissant.

TLDR: Solid pastries. "The Rebel Within" just get it. **NOTE** This location is a booth at the Palo Alto Farmer's Market SATURDAY ONLY. You can order online ahead of time and pickup here, or go and see what's still available. Food: (4.7/5) The Rebel Within (soft boiled egg thing): GREAT. The star of the show. A really strong ham/cheese muffing. Strong additional green onion/savory flavors. The base would make a really great scone/muffin on its own. The perfectly soft-boiled egg takes it to another level! The yolk was perfectly jelly and added extra richness. A full breakfast in muffin form. It's pretty heavy, and could carry you through the morning. Great idea. Great execution. (4.0/5) BlackBerry Almond Muffin: A dense, moist, flavorful muffin. Large chunks of blackberry mixed in. Very fruit forward without being too sweet. Nice crumbly, sugary, chunks on top were a bonus. (3.9/5) Kouign Amman (Nectarine filling): An interesting step up from your standard KA. A HUGE amount of nectarine filling. Not too tart/sweet. Like a homemade nectarine jam stuffed inside. Great cross-section and filling/pastry ratio. The filling could have been even more Nectarine forward, but still very good. (3.0/5) Croissant Pudding (Saturday/Sunday only): A standard bread pudding-type dessert made with croissants instead of bread. This added even more buttery richness, but looses the croissants' signature layering and textures. It's definitely tasty, but not mind-blowing. (2.0/5) Dark Chocolate Croissant: SKIP. Worse than a standard croissant. It had great layering/lamination. Well baked, with a great dark chocolate color. But the flavor didn't come through. Not enough sweetness to counter the dark chocolate's bitterness. The bites with actual chocolate chunks were pretty good. Though, a standard croissant would have been a better play. Other: - Best to order online beforehand. Pickup time doesn't matter. Your order will already be packaged when you arrive. - They sell out of "The Rebel Within" pretty quickly.

Ham and havarti cheese (not enough cheese) croissant, get the rebel!

As for ambiance, it's located in farmers market at the Palo Alto location, there's no sitting C&W, but plenty of sitting areas around the market. The service is typical of a farmers market, the staff is welcoming. I purchased the Rebel within and the ham & havarti cheese croissant, the Rebel within was pretty good and will buy it again...:) , the ham & havarti cheese croissant it's another story, that is the croissant pastry is well made , there's ham in it, but, where's the cheese? To my disappointment It was absent, felt more like a ham only croissant, hence taking a star off. I would definitely come back for another Rebel within and to try their other pastries...:)

I am surprised there's no reviews thus far of Craftsman and Wolves for their Sunday appearance at the California Avenue Farmer's Market in Palo Alto. Of course, you know per Yelp rules that I'm not being paid by Craftsman and Wolves so while this may sound like an advertisement, I'm simply trying to bring attention should any folks stumble upon this Yelp page and also wonder why are there beautiful pictures of an egg stuffed in a muffin and cakes, but no reviews? Is this a scam? No, it's not a scam. Craftsman and Wolves is a bakery located in the Mission District of San Francisco that is best known for making the wildest baked goods. The Rebel Within is their famous muffin with a runny soft-boiled egg stuffed inside. Other notable goods include their chocolate croissant (pain au chocolat), Japanese milk bread, and Strawberry Kouign Amann with their strawberry jam mad from Dirty Girl Farms strawberries and chamomile macaron. To order during COVID-19, you can go online to their website (https://craftsman-wolves.square.site/s/order?location=11ea8418632f2839a53a0cc47a2b63cc) , select the location you'd like to pick up from, and place your order. We ordered the Japanese Milk Bread, Pain Au Chocolat, Strawberry Kouign Amann, and Morning Bun. The Japanese Milk Bread was delightful when lightly toasted. I only tried mine with a bit of apricot jam though I think it would work great with some fried pork (tonkatsu) and/or fried egg as well. The pain au chocolat was decent. It's not extremely airy like croissants you'll find at Ariscault Bakery, but it's tasty. There is a lot of chocolate inside so chocolate lovers will be happy. In fact, I think I like this version better than the pain au chocolat at Tartine Bakery. The morning bun was okay as well. Think of it as a roll of cinnamon sugar. Unlike Tartine's version, which adds orange zest to the recipe, I didn't taste the orange zest in this one and it's actually a key flavor so my vote goes to the morning bun at Tartine instead. Finally, the Strawberry Kouign Amann. I was pretty disappointed with this one. My benchmark for kouign amman is the one at b.patisserie and this one didn't have the intense crunch, flakiness, and butter flavor that the b.patisserie version exhibits. The strawberry jam is only located in the center of the kouign amann. You can probably picture my look of disappointment when I sliced into 1/3 of the kouign amman and didn't get any strawberry jam. The macaron was cute, but there to make it fancy without adding too much in terms of enhancing the flavor. Maybe I just don't care for thick strawberry jam and the delicate flavors of chamomile together. I definitely need to try their Rebel Within muffin and a few more of their crazier concoctions to get a comprehensive review, but I think based on what I've had so far, I haven't really been blown away.

Craftsman and Wolves is one of my favorite patisseries in the SF bay area. Today I learned that they started coming to the Palo Alto Farmer's Market. It's really pleasant surprise that now I can get their cakes within 15 min drive from my home. So far my family has only tried a limited number of items but we were totally satisfied. I don't think their croissant is better than Arsicault Bakery. But other cakes are totally unique and excellent. I don't know who is the chief pâtissier here but I can definitely tell that their style is a Japanese feel with own delicacy. If you like the heavy & sweet western style cakes, you might feel that cakes here are too mild. Otherwise, I am pretty sure you will like it. All the photos I am posting are actually taken in SF Valencia St shop. Since the cakes are delivered to the farmer's market directly from their main shop, I think they are still relevant.

super excited that i don't have to go up to sf to get some craftsman and wolves! accidentally preordered for next weekend (double check the date!) but went today anyway. got the fig and walnut KA- the pastry itself was a bit dry and not as buttery as i would've hoped, and didn't come with the macaron in the photos, but the fig walnut filling was pretty unique and really great! their tent is closer to 350 cal ave, not 400, and you have to preorder at least a day in advance for most pastries, so plan ahead!

Craftsman and Wolves is a killer crafts bakery that makes the perfect Kouign-amann. The shop does many things including a signature bread pudding, small in size but big in flava. Measures maybe two and a half inches diameter, an inch thick. Packs a wonderful wowie punch with the seasonally ripe berries and fruit, plus a few pieces of specialty chocolate. My friend who knows from excellent pastries says the goods at C and W are special because the sugars in each item are balanced, not excessive. The goodies we sampled together were scrumptious. Somehow even my pedestrian palate senses that these dessert thingies are distinctive and of ultra quality. Ambiance-wise, it's a noisy place with a few tables lining the windows. You are elbow to elbow practically against neighbouring tables. I know I heard every syllable of the conversation going on to my right-hand side. I also knew it was Korean, so I couldn't successfully eavesdrop... boooooo. Very unique metallic artsy fashioned chairs make the space seem modern. There's merch in the corner and on a wall. You can get coffee drinks too. Service is excellent: the majestically tall staffer -- who I thought was manager but isn't -- was the kindest friendliest soul, very pleasant to chat with. Craftsman crew were mad busy, but always with smiles and ready to help customers. You won't find any bakery bites that are not delectable at Craftsman and Wolves. Kool yummy easy five stars.

My family and I stopped by Marvel Cake during Mother's Day for a sweet treat on Sunday. This location is in the strip of Downtown Palo Alto and has limited parking (similar to the rest of the stores there, there is a lot of parking, and you will need to get lucky). My mom does like the Marvel Cake in their first location, so we swung by here to try this one out! Location-wise, this is a smaller shop than the original one in West San Jose with limited seating inside. I would say it's not work from home friendly however, I did see a college student next to me on her laptop so maybe I am incorrect here! The interior is nice and light, matching the elegance of the desserts. We ordered three items on the menu: the pillow cake, the bisou, and the blueberry lavender roll. Here are some thoughts: * Pillowcase cake: It may seem like this would be a fluffy cake due to the nature of its shape, but it is a gelatinous Jell-O cake with fruit jam. It was not bad, and tasted refreshing and light. I didn't know if I liked it at first, but ultimately I did come back for seconds and thirds, so this is approved. * Blueberry lavender roll cake: This was not at all what we were expecting. I did not taste any lavender, nor did it have a strong blueberry flavor. I think what threw our party off was the layer of gelatin that surrounded the cake. Texturally, we were not a big fan. * Bisou: This one was our favorite one. I appreciated the nutty crust in the bottom layer of the cake, while the filling was soft and bouncy. It is very sweet, however, but overall, I really enjoyed this one and feel like it would go great with a cup of coffee. What made the experience here a 3 instead of a 4 or 5 was the service we got. We weren't greeted when we came in, which, to be fair, is totally fine, maybe they were busy. However, the person helping us stared at us the whole time and did not really communicate well with us. When I tried to order the cakes for my family, they looked bothered that we were there, and I was not sure if they understood what pastries I was ordering because they did not repeat it back to us at all or confirm anything. When I did place the order, they slowly grabbed the plates and looked visually confused, which again, if they wanted to, I could have repeated it back to them. After they gathered everything, they put it in front of us and rang me up. The whole time, they did not say a word to me at all. Did not reconfirm anything, did not acknowledge we were there, did not say thank you. It was a bit strange, and I had to check with my family if it was me or if that was a really weird experience (it wasn't me).
