Abstract: Cozy, good service, awesome hummos, 3 layer chocolate dessert = yum. The rest is so-so. ---------- I like the atmosphere and the service provided by the staff. EXCELLENT. The food though... maybe I was hyped up by all the yelp reviews (which I definitely respect), but it didn't (completely) work out for me. So let's get down to it. Hummos with Pine Nut: 4/5 So this was creamy, rich, and not overpowering. There were plenty of pine nuts to give it texture as well. It went well with the pita bread that was provided. Mantee "Traditional" (ravioli filled with seasoned fresh Angus ground meat) : 4/5 The presentation of this dish was nice, The "mantee" itself was actually pretty good. The problem with this dish is that you can only eat a few pieces before you are overwhelmed with the garlic yogurt sauce. It's good, but you better bring a group of friends to help out. Soujuk (Armenian beef sausage sautéed with fresh tomato): 2/5 Okay, this was not that good. And oh boy, let me tell you, I've had my fair of sausages (hm.... that didn't come out right, but focus, people, focus! :D)! It seemed to be too dry and it felt like they used too much oil. King's Delight (filet mignon sautéed with garlic, tomato and parsley): 3/5 I was underwhelmed by this by the fact that I didn't really taste the garlic at all. I don't expect it to be like the Stinking Rose or anything, but it does need more flavor. The dessert with the 3 chocolates (with mousse): 5/5 Okay, wow, I don't even know how to articulate how good this was. I wanted to order 10 more, but obviously, I cannot eat that much. It was just the right amount of sweetness and was at a perfect temperature. A+. ---------- Summary: I am giving this place a 3.5. I think if they improved some of the entree dishes, it would be fantastic. I will say though... for all the guys out there, if you want to take a girl to a nice restaurant with a great atmosphere, this place does fit the bill. Came by for a late lunch and left full and happy. On the inside, Mantee feels like a home doubled as a restaurant. The patio in the back is well-decorated and serene. Mantee's ambiance certainly helps contribute to the sense that you're eating a home-cooked, authentic Mediterranean meal. I loved the King's Delight. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked--tender and flavorful but still with a little chew. It was seasoned well with parsley, a tiny hint of garlic and delicious, fresh tomatoes all stewed together. Very delicious. Their dolma is not the traditional meat-stuffed grape leaves that you might expect. It's a paper-thin shell of eggplant encompassing a heavily-oiled rice and vegetable mix (mostly rice). I got it with the yogurt, which I'd recommend. The dish was a little too oily for my taste, and I would have liked a little more substance in the eggplant, but it was still quite good. Charming if overpriced place with poor, slow service. We were in the restaurant for seven minutes before being acknowledged on a Friday night at 8 pm. A well-managed place or perhaps common sense would train their employees to acknowledge you when you see two people standing around for seven minutes. We were never given menus, and asked someone sitting next to us for them. Water came fifteen minutes after entering the restaurant. Someone cracked a wine glass next to us, and patrons and waiters stepping and crunching the glass underfoot for five minutes before it was swept up (and not very completely...we still had shards of glass underneath our table). The food came slowly. Everything was slow. We had hummus, dolma in yogurt, the Mantee boat (both meat and veggie), muhammura, hot feta, and itch salad. All was good, not great except for maybe the dolma in yogurt, which was quite tasty, and everyone's favorite. The sesame dip that comes with the complimentary soft/baked pita bread was also quite good. For the price you are paying, the portions are small, and the quality is decent, but elsewhere, you can get larger portions AND at cheaper prices while being noticeably better. And where might that be? Well, I'll tell you and that's very sweet of me. :D Better Lebanese style restaurants in Los Angeles include Marouch in Hollywood, Carousel in Glendale and Hollywood, Alcazar in Encino, and Sunnin Lebanese Cafe in West L.A. All of them have considerably better service and food, and if you're a hummus lover, it's really darn near difficult to top the hummus at Sunnin Lebanese Cafe. read more

The warm, peaceful atmosphere is inviting and comfortable, like stepping into your moms kitchen. The music has a cool, unexpected classic rock kinda vibe quiet enough to hear your date without raising your voice. THE FOOD. The chicken kabob was juicy, and excellently seasoned. It was served with a garlic paste that I'd ladle on breakfast, lunch and dinner if I could regardless of any bystanders complaints. The dolmas were an excellent mix of rice and ground meat that weren't too salty at all. We didn't get any desert but you can bet I'll be back for a healthy serving of baklava and coffee very soon. Well this little restaurant is gem. Mantee Cafe offers a well kept, adorable back patio dining area and their wait staff are very accommodating. I tried the traditional Mantee, not knowing anything about the dish (and even less about the cuisine) except the description. A boat-shaped dish arrived to my table and I discovered many miniature little meat-filled gyoza, perfectly pan-fried crispy, draped with a delicious garlic yogurt sauce, coupled with a red pepper chili sauce. We tried a number of their vegetarian Meze options - all fantastic especially the muhammara. The crispy pita is fantastic with all of it! LA native, SF resident. Very confused and overwhelmed where to take my brother and his beautiful (vegetarian) fiancee for their celebration engagement dinner on me. I looked high and low, asked my LA friends and for some reason wasn't into any of the suggestions UNTIL I found Mantee and read the glowing reviews. Glowing is the perfect word to describe Mantee. Service top notch, cozy ambiance, delicious authentic cuisine. We booked a four top on the patio and enjoyed how much it felt like a family backyard with flair. We ended up ordering a bunch of appetizers instead of large plates and were pleasantly full. So much so that when the check arrived for $50(!) I got no heat from the server (I would imagine it was a disappointment, but heck, the food is FILLING!). Adore this place. I will definitely return with all of the Mediterranean food aficionados I know. The owner, Rafi, is so sweet and adores dogs--so bring your pups for the patio! Call ahead to make a reservation as the outside fills up--but they are very accommodating! The Australian bloke was so nice. When asked, Rafi will tell you that the cuisine is "Middle Eastern," but the majority of the menu is Lebanese and Armenian with 4 award-winning French desserts. I am Turkish, so I loved it all. What an adorable little café! Food is authentic, and quite delicious. Actually, the Fattoush salad is the best I have had outside Lebanon! It is a must. Their rendition of cheese beoreg is very different than most middle eastern places, and another must try. The tabbouleh, the muhhammara, the bread, and the meats are very good. But I did not like the hummus with the filet mignon... something was missing...? Top it all off with a good "any" Lebanese dessert, and you have an excellent culinary experience. This is an extremely solid restaurant, from the decor to the food. The fattoush here is one of my favorites (even more than Sunnin, a place I'm gaga over). The lemon/cider dressing had me from the moment it hit my buds. The offset of the fried pita scattered throughout the freshness of it all, sent it over the top. The Mantee "Veggie" was different and fun, from textures to flavors. Hard to explain, just have to try it. Their falafels are perfectly crispy and flavored. I'm a fan. I would have given this spot a five star, but my favorite dish to get when I have Lebanese food is the Kafta/Kefta. This time, the Kafta... was just OKAY for me. A wee bit dry and the herb seasoning was off. Which probably means it was really good and that I'm just a Kafta/Kefta snob without enough experience, haha, so what do I know? This review is based on a phone conversation not their food. I have been looking for a place to throw a private event and came across this restaurant. The reviews looked really good and the ambiance was perfect for my event. I called the restaurant to inquire about pricing. First off, I had to call them several times before I could get a hold of the chef who has the pricing information. When I finally got a call from the chef I was told he can't give me a price since I have never been to his restaurant. Which seems fair but I explained to him that I live out of town and won't have time to stop by anytime soon and just need an estimate so I can decide whether or not it's under my budget. If the pricing is within my budget then I will stop by to try the food before I make any reservations. He still refused to give me any estimates so I had to hang up knowing nothing. I found this to be very unprofessional. Why would I want to come try food at a restaurant without knowing if their pricing will match my budget? I don't find it realistic to drive couple of hours just to try food knowing it may not be within my budget. Also, after this kind of interaction with the owner/chef I am not sure if I can expect good service from them? Mantee is a restaurant in studio city. Mantee is a dumpling stuffed with spiced minced meat - often spelled manti and often served in a yogurt sauce with spices such as dry sumac and pepper. What was original at Mantee for me is that the mantee are lightly fried in butter before being boiled. Previously I've had manti in Afghani restaurants where the dumplings are simply boiled. The frying step gives the mantee a complex texture exploring crispy and soft. It makes sense that when a dish is eponyous to the restaurant you should order it, but to emphasize my point - ORDER THE MANTEE. We also enjoyed a dolma that was an eggplant stuffed with a spiced rice filling and smothered in a different yogurt sauce than used with the mantee. We closed our meal with a shish kebab which was well prepared, but unable to compete with the more unique flavors of the mantee and dolma. Still grilled meat is always welcome on my plate. The outdoor patio is intimate, well decorated, beautifully lit at night, amply heated with gas lamps, enhanced by several small trees that form a canopy overhead. We had a small table in a corner which was romantic even though there was a joyous, large group immediately next to us. Mantee is worth a trip to Studio City. This place is pretty good if you just drink the sauce they give you. Sit down and say "Give me the sauce!" It's a semi romantic, semi old person feel decor. There is a small parking lot in the rear, you need to drive in from the alley. It's a bit cramp in there. The free pita/hard pita is a great idea because it makes you want to buy hommus, which we did. But really, if you have that sauce you are golden. Their hommus is pretty normal, nothing special, we ordered the one with filet mignon, which didn't really taste amazing but was pretty good. For the actual main course everything was kind of mild. We got the King's delight (a soup type item), lamb chops and rice pilaf, all were ok. The Rice pilaf was fluffy textured. I recently moved to Sherman Oaks from West Hollywood and am in the process of discovering new restaurants "on the other side". Having gone to Mantee twice now, this is my new favorite restaurant hands down. The food here is simply amazing! It says the restaurant serves "middle eastern" food, but I had to clarify with our waiter on what region the food comes from; turns out it's Lebanese Armenian cuisine. It's comfort food, but most of the items we've tried are baked, although swimming in some delicious garlicky yogurt. So if you are all about healthy food, perhaps this is not the place for you. The menu: my absolute favorites so far (and it is really difficult to pick favorites here!) are Mantee's Traditional and Dolma with Yogurt. I've also tried and liked Soujok and Mantee's King's Delight. Fattoush salad is good, but there is either too much lemon or vinegar in it for my taste; I could also live without pita bread in it. Service: First time I came to Mantee, it was on a Sunday around lunch time. The place was virtually empty and the food was flying out of the kitchen. It was two of us and we wanted to try several appetizers, so we ended up ordering Fattoush salad and 3 appetizers, which was enough food for lunch. On my second visit here, we came on a Saturday night and brought another couple with us. They were extremely busy with most tables in the patio occupied, so make reservations. While the food was equally delicious, the service was much slower with appetizers coming out one by one in about 15 min intervals. Not that we cared, we had great time in their adorable patio, chatting and enjoying a nice summer night. The owners, a very cute older couple, were going around the patio and were making sure that their patrons are happy, now where do you see that?? Other: They don't serve booze. Not even wine or beer... A glass of wine would go really great with the food, but I won't hold this against them. From what I understand based on other reviews, they don't allow you to bring wine as well, perhaps something to do with lack of alcohol license. However, they seem to be doing well without it. Iv always made a reservation on OpenTable, so the times I came, I was seated immediately. But iv seen some people walk in and easily get a table. Now they have the most adorable patio, its so quiet and relaxing, makes you forget you're right on Ventura Blvd. I haven't actually sat inside before, I can't get over the patio! I am the biggest sucker for patios, and this place is certainly in my top 3. My boyfriend and I have tried many different dishes from here, but I think we both agree (for once in our lives) that their lamb chops are the best. Cooked and served just perfectly. Mint tea made of fresh leaves and also had honey available. Muhammara was delicious but hummus was meh. (Unless you mixed in some muhammara to add flavor. Pita was also bleh. The only stand out dish for me was the famous dish-mantee baked with yogurt on top. This was the only dish that really did it for me. This was basically like really yummy pasta baked in yogurt. Mantee is interesting and fairly well executed Armenian-Lebanese cuisine. The restaurant itself is a bit quirky: it looks like a small, older family establishment that has reinvented itself a couple of times, rather than a purpose-built or fully renovated restaurant. There is a sense that you're dining in a cozy old house that now has multiple dining tables in each room. The main indoor dining area is split into two levels, and there is a heated patio in back. Service is friendly but a bit disorganized. We arrived at the same time as a moderately large group who seemed to have a reservation. The place was barely half full, but the large group seemed to be having all sorts of problems with their reservation and the tables they'd been given. My friend and I were seated in the partly empty dining room and immediately given a basket of mixed crisp and soft flatbreads with a dark sesame dipping sauce. My friend is currently aiming to be semi-vegetarian, though it's not a hard and fast rule as yet. That was a good thing, as Armenian & Lebanese restaurant food (as opposed to what people eat at home) is very heavy on the meat. Even the dishes that featured vegetables prominently were often stuffed with meat. We had an amazing stuffed eggplant, tender and rich, melting in your mouth, with a yogurt dressing. We also had the special mantee dumplings, a bit like very small tortellini or ravioli, but with an interesting crunchy texture to the pasta and smothered in a sauce with sour cream or a very rich yogurt. They have a number of intriguing desserts, most of which sound in descriptions like new variations on classic Middle Eastern dainties, but in fact are more like the French-inspired mousse, chocolate, and light gateau confections that one finds in Japanese or Vietnamese bakeries. We had the mango dessert, which was tasty but not at all what we expected: again, with layers of mousse and sponge cake, when we'd expected some sort of a pudding that would have been a more traditional Armenian dessert. They have a small selection of wines from the eastern Mediterranean and elsewhere. Prices were comparable for other Armenian restaurants. The vibe in the restaurant suggested that they aim towards their local, regular customers. They were friendly, but also a little informal--the host bragged about several of the items, in a way that seemed a little off-putting. I'll be the judge of whether the hummus is outstanding, thank you, unless you've won some sort of award. (Their hummus is decent, but Hummus Bar & Grill blows them away, and I love the hummus at Sunnin, which is heavily cut with tahini.) All in all, a nice place. The dumplings were unusual and the eggplant was exceptional. I would stop here again if in the neighborhood, particularly if with more of a meat-eater, but I don't think I'd make a special trip here just for dinner. Also be warned that it is not a good option for anyone with food restrictions, as pretty much everything on the menu seemed to have gluten, dairy, meat, and be mixed in an un-kosher, un-halal manner. Food: The mantee: I've heard many good things, but was a bit disappointed. If it wasn't for the yogurt sauce the mantee seemed too crunchy and tasteless. Fatoush was seasoned to perfection. Soujuk was heated in front of us and was just a nice amount of spice. Kids loved this as well! The kashka kabob was delicious and so was the sauce. The lamb was my favorite. Melted in your mouth. They do give you 3 types of chips/pita breads so that you're enticed to order hummus to dip them in. The signature mantee dish had a flavorful meaty/yogurty sauce over baked pasta shells. The pasta was hard an crunchy, almost tasted like half baked raw pasta. Other reviews assure me that this is the authentic thing and its supposed to be this texture, but my Tate buds would prefer the pasta to be a softer consistency like ravioli. The shish kabob, which was a beef skewer, was delicious. Nicely marinated and grilled, but not too dry. The white rice with mixed noodles it came with was just okay though. Servers were nice. The dolma with yogurt was super delish and I definitely recommend it. The chocolate ganache was heavenly and I would recommend it to all chocolate lovers out there. If you're Armenian and had mantee growing up like I had, you'll prolly prefer grandma's mantee. Our bill was about $35 and we had leftovers. We sat on the patio which is super cute and has string lights and plenty of heaters - very intimate but I enjoyed that. Romantic setting. The servers were super friendly and knowledgeable, but the hostess (dark hair) was super rude and couldn't be bothered... I don't want to knock down their rating because of her but she went out of her way to be rude and dismiss us when we asked questions. Overall, we will be back. The food was all excellent. It was exactly what I was looking for and more. They used so much fresh garlic and mint it was incredible,and all the meat was very lean and well cooked. Terrible service. When we sat down at the table, we asked for water. It took more than a half hour for waiter to even come back to the table. Waiter forgot the waters. After we finally ordered, it took more than one hour to get the food. I asked to have separate checks for my husband & I and the other couple-- waiter messed it up twice. We finally just paid because it took so long to get service. I went to this same restaurant two years ago and loved the experience. However, i would NEVER go back now. Pretty little place to get your Mediterranean fix. I heard about their mantee time and time again, and finally gave it a try. Unfortunately the mantee was not what I had anticipated-actually it was far from that. The mantee was pieces were too small, the meat was a very small roll, and it was too dry/crispy in general. Maybe it was left in the oven to long, I'm not sure, but the dough is not supposed to be that hard especially when you top it off with the tomato based water and the yogurt. (We make it at home all the time!). It was served in a small plate costing 13$. I guess it's ok to try one time since everyone else loves it, but I won't come back for it. The mutabel (eggplant dip) and the hot feta plate were tasty. The kadayef was also pretty good, and the presentation was up to par. To wrap it up, they have some tasty Mediterranean dishes, however the mantee (which I assume is what they are known for) needs some improvement. read more

Ok.i went in last Friday with my girlfriend.we sat in back patio..food was good.it was 945pm..everything was great until a slender guy named Fred walked by and wreeked of weed..he is a chef by what he said..the smell was strong and made my gf gag..is this the kind of employee you hire to make food..he seemed very mad when I stopped him asked if he was dining or worked there..he said he worked as chef very angrily..ruined my gf and my visit here..fire this employee for his bad attitude..we are never coming back!!! read more
