    A Taste of New Orleans
    Michelle N.

Creole food in Van Nuys! Everything we ate tasted great, but the favorite all around was definitely the gumbo. Came on a Sunday at like 6pm and we were pretty much the only people there, but they were doing some take out orders. The service was quick and our waitress was nice. Gotta come back for the sandwiches.

My partner pitched this restaurant to me, and I happily obliged. He made reservations for 6:30 on a Thursday, and we arrived around 6:10pm. There was plenty of parking spots in the back with free parking for 2 hours. There was also metered parking in the front. When we walked in, we noted that we had a reservation but it didn't really seem to matter. There were several open tables, which got more crowded toward the night. Since Happy Hour is 3-6pm, and we arrived at 6:10pm, we asked if there were any specials. Our server, Avery, told us on Thursdays the chargrilled oysters, and some drinks were still at a discounted price after 6pm. We ended up ordering a Swamp Tea, Sparkling Water, 6 Chargrilled Oysters, 6 raw oysters, A Taste of New Orleans (red rice and beans, gumbo, and crawfish étouffée), shrimp & grits, and a side order of cornbread muffins. The total ran about $116, but there is a 4% discount if you pay with cash! Our server was fantastic. I was very impressed that he did not write down a single thing that we ordered but our order came out 100% correct. He was also very knowledgeable in terms of recommendations, and seemed to know the menu very well. He checked in on us at appropriate times, and was attentive. When our drinks came, Avery mentioned to us that it was their first day with their liquor license, and they were able to finally sell hard liquor. It was exciting, but he said the downside was that they were still perfecting their drinks. We tried the Swamp Tea and it was strong (which is a compliment). I heard the table next to us giving constructive criticism about their drinks, and was very impressed with how the staff was open and receptive to their feedback. For my drink, I ordered a sparkling water. I was expecting a San Pellegrino, but it tasted like it was sparkling tap water from a soda gun. In terms of the quality of the food, I would personally pass on the oysters (both raw and chargrilled). There was a slight fishy taste that my partner and I both noticed, but it wasn't bad enough to stop us from eating it all. I just wouldn't come here specifically for the oysters. I did enjoy the A Taste of New Orleans because I love trying samples of everything. My favorite was the crawfish étouffée. There was a lot of crawfish tails in there, which I really liked. My partner also said his Shrimp & Grits were good. The atmosphere was very casual and relaxed. I would say very authentic to New Orleans. Having had phenomenal food in New Orleans, I wouldn't necessarily say that this restaurant tastes like the food I had there, but it's definitely worth a shot if you want to try creole cuisine and don't want to make the four hour flight.

The Catfish bites were delicious. Sorry I didn't take a Pic before I ate. It was too good to waste my time

This place is great, the food is awesome the service was great. I had the Catfish bites, wingletts, fries, and vegan jambalaya it was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly. Everything was perfectly spiced. The waiter had a dry sense of humor which I enjoyed. They have a jazz band in the weekend. My only issue was the parking. It's metered street parking. I recommend Mardi Gras Tuesday.

I've eaten here a couple times! Very flavorful seafood! Street parking - so be prepared and read signs. If you want a taste of New Orleans - this is where you go.

The vibe is very casual. There was live music that Friday night we were there. The staff were all very efficient and helpful. We were a group of 9 and they were able to address all our requests in no time at all. There's no private parking but there's enough street parking if you come early enough. The food was okay. The fried chicken was not as we have expected, though. It could be better. The baked oysters in half shells were bad and did not taste fresh at all. I had to returned that and did not get charged for it. The fried oysters were much better. The weren't bad and was just alright. The fried catfish was good according to my friend. They can only split the bill 3 ways for credit card payers and there is a % surcharge for paying with credit cards. Unfortunately, I am not coming back to this place for a second round of dinner with my friends.

Mardi Gras Tuesday on any day is good but on Takeout Tuesday is speaks to me. And I definitely get those Wellness Wednesday leftovers. This black owned and blooming biz is located in the Sherman Oaks area off Ventura Blvd/Van Nuy Blvd. Serving up Cajun, Creole and Southern style realness in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. It's a little bit of a hidden gem being neighbor places like FitBox, Charcuterie LA, across from 2nd Street secondhand store, Juice Crafters, Happy Days Cafe and more. Parking is mostly street, metered, with a private small lot in back. The have great service, a full wine, beer and soju craft spirits bar (made from distilled fermented spirits). Happy hour is amazing and features both beverages and food. The Plant-Based Creole Sliders being a 10/10. The food is bussin!!! Even for delivery or carry out. Their vegetarian/vegan menu is the chef's kiss. I have had some instances where they were out of things in the pass, like the Hearts of Palm Poboy :_( twice, but they do their best. Love the decor in here. Bar area is iconic. Feel big and intimate all at once. Good music, sometimes live and entertainment on their flat screens. MGT is open from Noon til 9pm Monday through Thursday, Friday until 11pm, Saturday from 11am to 11pm #BreakfastLunchDinnerDessert and Sundays from 11am to 9pm. Sometimes with tables in front when the weather is more on the ideal side, pup friendly, family friendly, Wi-Fi friendly. Gender neutral restrooms. And very much Open to All.

Lots of questions to wonder about this place... When we walked in, waited for about 2 minutes before a waiter walked out and told us to take a seat anywhere. We grabbed menus as we picked our seats, cause it seemed like he was the only one there. Anyway, he brought us some water, then proceeded to get the order for a lady at a nearby table. After a couple minutes, he came and took our order. We ordered the fisherman's combo, which included fried shrimp, catfish, oysters, and hush puppies. It also came with fries and two dipping sauces. We also ordered the happy hour chicken wings, gumbo, and jambalaya. We also added a side of collard greens, and some charbroiled oysters. So after we ordered, we waited. And waited. And waited. An hour later, our food is ready and comes out. Why? Well, the lady sitting next to use ordered a decent amount of food for a party of four, or maybe two, it could've just been just as much as we ordered. Another table of two, which came after us, ordered after us, got their food before us. Who knows.... What we ordered was just slow to make? Anyway, if the food is good, than it might be worth it.. was it though? The happy hour cup of gumbo ($6) and the side of collards ($8) were super salty, what the heck?! Who eats this?! The collards tasted like they made too much some other day, reheated it a few times, and it concentrated the salt into the veg. The gumbo was just too salty. The happy hour chicken wing plate was $8 and came with four wings and some fries. One wing was dry, the other three were ok. The flavor is light. It was marinated for 24 hours? Really? The happy hour jambalaya cup was also $6. It was ok, not great but not bad, just ok. The charbroiled oysters were good, but they were really tiny oysters that you could barely taste due to the stuff on it, is that why it is good? Barely able to taste or see the oysters. $2each. The fisherman's combo, $24, uses small shrimps that are not worth eating. Give me four decent sized good ones instead. The oysters were cooked to death, and were not good to begin with too. The catfish bites were right, and spot on. The hush puppies were good too! Overall, just get catfish bites if that's all you want, I can't see anything else on this dish being worth ordering. Anyway, I am not planning to ever come back here. I recommend you save your time and money, especially time, and go elsewhere. This is not what it seemed like it was going to be. This was a waste. If you come, you better come half full, cause the wait takes long, and your food won't be satisfying. Inside is clean with plenty of seating, does this place get filled? Maybe, but won't be by people who know good food and a care about time. Restroom had no soap too, although there were two dispensers.... No soap. Like I said, don't do it.

From the outside Mardi Gras Tuesday seems as if it's just any other themed family restaurant. It's when I have these thoughts and am then proven completely wrong that makes me happy. Mardi Gras Tuesday is one of the best restaurants I've visited in a while. Going here for a late lunch we were greeted by an incredible waitress who was extremely knowledgeable and kind. Definitely the best wait staff I've ever encountered. For lunch I tried the half chicken Po' Boy with a side of Mac and cheese. Words don't adequately express how amazing these dishes tasted. The Mac and cheese was perfection. The chicken Po boy was a flavor explosion. Perfectly marinated and cooked chicken alongside delicious fresh veggies on a roll that was just delicious. Thinking back on the sandwich now I wish I could go back there this instant and have it again. I've been curious about this place for a long time and now am kicking myself for waiting this long. I highly recommend you stop by and try the phenomenal food of Mardi Gras Tuesday.

This Gumbo was truly made with soul and love. Perhaps the 2nd best Gumbo I have had in LA. A very rich and amazing broth served with a decent amount of rice in a bowl so big you will lose the spoon if you're not careful. Kitchen and service are great. I have to say though this place needs to discover its identity in the beverage department. I am seeing Soju whiskey, Soju Vodka. As someone who likes liquor I was not impressed with the drink optio

Made the drive from Bakersfield and WOW absolutely worth every mile! Every single thing we ordered was beyond a 10/10 The grilled oysters? NEXT LEVEL Huge shoutout to Mark for the incredible hospitality top-tier service from start to finish! The whole spot had such a clean, chill vibe that made us want to stay even longer. Safe to say this is officially our go-to spot anytime we come over the hill! If you've been thinking about trying this place... DO IT. You will not regret

Went for Father's Day with no reservation and they accommodated our party. Food was absolutely delicious. Parking can be found around the corner on Moorpark. Will definitely be back. The gumbo put my brother to sleep! Great atmosphere. Call for reservations.

    Any music? How's the ambiance?

there is live jazz on sundays, and yes there is music usually. great vibe!

    How about parking?

Street parking. Maybe a spot in back but I wouldn't count on it.

I see several vegetarian options. Are they able to make Vegan?

My daughter was my guest there, ordered vegan ( as she is) and it had to be remade twice...just keep 1n eye on your food!

    Do they serve fried chicken?

    Yes They Serve Fried Chicken

Does the chicken sausage have pork casing?

If it’s chicken sausage there won’t be anything pork in/on it. It’s delicious and an alternative for pork sausage.

Can I get jambalaya with no shrimp?

    Yes! Definitely

    Are reservations necessary?

    No reservations necessary.

Do you have any vegan option? I am coming for a birthday :)

I didn't see any Vegan options but to my surprise there were several Vegetarian options - You can always call, the Owner is very helpful.

    Do you show Saints games?

Yes, when ever they are playing.

    Is there still outdoor dining?

    Indoor and outdoor dining available

First let me start by saying I loved every bit of my experience at this restaurant! My question is do you all have live music at all during the day or night on the weekends?

Weekdays they have a jazz or karaoke night. Best thing to do is call and confirm. Food is amazing!

Is anything on the menu gluten free by any chance? I have Celiac and got so incredibly sick in Nola when I was assured the dish I ordered was gluten free. I'd rather not have that happen again.

As of now we don't offer any gluten free items but our Chefs are working hard to make that happen. So make sure and check back with us in the near future.

I don't eat pork & saw that their jambalaya is made with chicken sausage. If that's the case, would love to try. Can anyone confirm this?

the chicken sausage may have pork casing

Is the chicken po boy made with chicken breast? Also, can you get a shrimp Po boy with grilled shrimp instead of fried shrimp? Thanks!

Yes Chciken sandwich is made with pulled and seasoned chicken breast. They will make a Grilled Shrimp poboy if you ask...

Hi! So excited about this restaurant! Can anyone advise if the veggie bowl and mac n cheese are vegetarian?

Yes both are vegetarian they also have more vegetarian options available just ask a server.

What are the vegan/vegetarian options in this restaurant? :)

I don't know all of the selections there. However, I do know that they have a sweet potato po'boy that is very good. Check out their menu for additional information.

Their little market area is fascinating as well - with small bottles of soy sauce aged in bourbon barrels and other delicious sounding ingredients. I did end up taking home a shaker bottle of their house made furikake. Can't wait to try that! I'm so happy this is in the neighborhood. I've had oyster shooters before and loved them but didn't like their take on it here. Way too much horseradish and the vodka portion was way off (too little vodka) and unbalanced. Oysters Rockefeller - 4 1/2 stars. Quite meaty and delicious, such a great flavor and take on this classic dish. Crab Cake - 4 stars. Quite the large portion, and quite good! Miso Chilean Seabass - 5 stars. This was excellent! It was cooked perfectly with a delicious miso sauce, served with a tasty jasmine rice and steamed spinach. Short Rib w mashed potatoes - 5 stars. No notes! The meat was soft, tender, and rich and flavor and the potatoes were also excellent. Our waitress (who was fabulous) brought out an ice cream Sunday to celebrate the birthday occasion and I have to say it was also fabulous! It was an old school brownie sunday with gobs of delicious hot fudge and sprinkles and an item I would definitely order upon my next visit. I didn't realize they had a complimentary parking lot in the back, that's a huge bonus. Would definitely come back here for a special occasion, this spot is solid!

Was in the area the other day so we decided to stop by for a late lunch about 45 minutes before…read morethey closed for the afternoon. We were able to walk right in and grab a table as the afternoon rush was over. First, it is a cute restaurant with nice ambiance inside. You can also eat outside it looked like, but it was hot so that was not going to be an option. Started with the mini crab cakes and the tuna on crispy rice. The crab cakes had a good amount of crab in them, which was really nice, but they definitely tasted under seasoned. The tuna on crispy rice was great though, topped with avocado and a spicy mayo. Nice crispiness on the outside, soft rice in the middle, good flavor, just a nice bite. For entrees we tried the chimichuri steak sandwich, the French dip and the lobster roll. The lobster roll looks the part but was light on the actual lobster, in our opinions. Felt the bread to everything else ratio was really off, so it feels like mostly bread with some lobster here and there. The chimichuri steak sandwich comes with arugula, gruyere, roasted peppers and grilled shallots and was a decent bite but not overly memorable. The French dip, on the other hand, was really tasty with that au jus and melted cheese. That was the real winner. Overall, nice ambiance, drinks were decent, some misses and some hits. If you go, definitely get the French dip and the tuna of sticky rice, slip that liner roll and the mini crab cakes and up to you on the chimichuri steak sandwich.
