The taste and texture of these tacos were simply amazing. I would recommend these tacos to any taco fan. I then ordered a cadillac margarita on the rocks and it rocked my world. I hope this review finds the owner of Mariachi's and crushes their soul because it's a disgrace that this place is in the Mexican food business (I love Mexican food). My wife and I came across this place when we were having trouble finding some place to eat after 9pm. It seems all restaurants on this island close at 9. Anyways the space is nice. it's open and breezy and pretty awesome on these warm Hawaiian nights. The service was sub par but to me that's besides the point because I've been in the service industry my whole life and everyone has their off days. Now the food. Honestly it is the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. The first round of service we ordered margaritas and an appetizer. Beware drink prices are not listed on the menu, probably intentional to shock guests at the end of service. Margaritas were okay. Premixed sour, too much triple sec and not enough tequila but I have had worse. The appetizer for which I don't remember the name was horrible. First off it seemed to be Asian influenced sticky rice with a stir fry type veggie mix and a teriyakiish sauce. Tasted like an Asian TV dinner. Frozen veggies and mushy rice. But beyond the horrible quality why is there an Asian food dish with a Hispanic name described as sautéed veggies and rice at an "authentic" Mexican restaurant? Had we not already ordered the next course and another margarita we would have stopped there. For dinner we split shrimp fajitas. Again severely disappointing. The shrimp was sautéed in a seasoning that was very salty and tasted like Worcestershire sauce the bell pepper and onion were undercooked and unseasoned (no garlic, no cummin, no oregano, no chilies, no good Hispanic flavors at all).Tortillas tasted homemade which was surprising but they were under cooked and doughy. Like they were made then frozen but not thawed fully before putting them to the grill. I managed to get one down with a lot of lime and guacamole (guacamole was good). Anyways we went from hungry to only slightly hungry after each having a bite of the app. The bill came and was $60.31.......... $12 well margaritas. The owner of this restaurant should be ashamed of the quality of there food. If you're thinking about going here and it's before 9pm go across the street to mermaids cafe. Went there for happy hour. The happy hour prices are very cheap compared to the regular menu. We had the $7 nachos which were very tasty, the taquitos which were also very good and beers. Oliver our waiter was very friendly and accomodating and made us feel at home. We were a party of 6 and everyone was happy. The only reason this place is in business is by taking advantage of tourists with their good location and misleading appearance of looking like a Mexican restaurant... Went there for happy hour and ordered 2 Margaritas & veggie enchiladas. First we were served chips & salsa by the grumpiest least friendly server I've ever met.. and I generally don't even care if people are friendly, people have bad days whatever but this guy.. Maybe he was trying to scare us away to save us from the food.. The chips were disgusting..and you have to pay for seconds.. what? I Watched the bartender pour pre-mixed Margarita into our $7 happy hour glasses. What a deal! The $17 enchiladas plate came out in a descent amount of time. Imagine buying a can of black beans, a can of corn, a can of spinach & a tortilla and then dumping them on a plate and putting it in the microwave for a minute. Horrible is an understatement... We walked in and the Hostess look at us like a nuisance. We tried to order pico de gallo and beans for our chips and the waiter said "oh no that's extra money you don't want that." We said yes we do. But it was never brought to the table. We ordered nachos and carne asade fries. It took 45 minutes for the food to come and I had to ask for a water refill 3 times. They were basic greasy bar food for $14 a piece. But we were there to watch the football game so we didn't mind. None of the waiters smiled the entire time and look as if they didn't want to be bothered with any of the customers. We had to ask for the bill from two different waiters, when it finally came we paid half cash half card. We noticed the waiters digging around by the register looking for something. Waiter came back to the table said "did you give me a card?" Turns out he lost the card or gave it to someone else who walked out with it. His response was oh sorry. And shrugged it off. We asked him to comp the meal and he looked irritated that we asked and said "yeah yeah." When we asked for our cash back he ignored us and kept looking for the card. After about 5 minutes he gave our cash back. He ruined the rest of our trip and showed us no respect or remorse. Do not come here. The food is overpriced and not tasteful, carne asada had no seasoning as all. The hostess was rude as well as the server. He was shorter that the other server but never gave us a name. read more

Ate here tonight with my family and I honestly should have questioned the decision when we walked in and saw maybe six other guests total in the restaurant. A server walked up to us with a smile and when I told her the size of our party, she pointed us to the back corner where we sat ourselves and waited on menus and drinks. During the transaction we had three different servers. The first brought out or drinks, the second took the order. And the third delivered the meal and cleaned up the plates when we finished eating. It was a slower night so I figured they were all just trying to interact with customers. However, once our food was placed on the table, no one came back to check on us. My small water glass remained empty from before my food arrived to when we got up to Pay. When the woman delivered the food to the table, she quickly asked if everything looked ok, then left without acknowledging mine or my brother's empty glasses. The guy who brought out our drinks (server #1) was asked to split our checks before we even ordered drinks. Server #2 must not have gotten that memo, because everything was combined incorrectly into two separate checks instead of 3 like needed. When I asked the woman (server #2) to please split my meal on its own, she told me that in order to split checks it was a $3 up charge per check. I explained to her that wouldn't be necessary because she split it incorrectly and she needed to fix it. She continued to be defensive saying that she only works here and she doesn't make the rules. I explained that I understand how business and customer service works, and I would be more understanding of the check splitting charge had it been an inconvenience more than just the simple task of splitting a check. Also, I'd be more patient if we had received any form of competent service during our visit. She argued with me for several minutes on how she had done her job correctly and checked on us multiple times. She said "I don't see what's so complicated about you having to pay this $3 up charge." I asked for a corporate # to call and complain to a manager and the number she gave me was for that same individual restaurant. A fourth server answered the phone when I called while watching from the outside. I understand how business works and how large parties will sometimes have a gratuity added to their bill for the servers convenience. I think it's completely bogus and poor service however to charge $3 extra on three separate bills after receiving some of the worst service I've ever gotten. The food was decent Mexican food, nothing special or rave worthy. The service, however, along with my experience tonight has left a very negative impression on me that I wouldn't recommend to anyone else! read more

Don't let the signage fool you. We ended up here for breakfast after the restaurant we wanted to go to was closed for the day. Even though the place was dead, it took 20 minutes to take our order then another 20 for the food to start to arrive. The menu has a lot of breakfast options. We ordered 2 omelettes, huevos rancheros, 2 orders of pancakes and a Mexican hot chocolate. Nothing there tasted like it was made in house. The ranchero sauce had a tinny, just came out of the can, flavor. The pancakes came out at least 5 minutes after the rest of the food and then we had to wait another 5 minutes for butter (that had to be asked for). The pancakes were luke warm on arrival and cold by the time the butter arrived. Once we started to eat the pancakes they had a very distinct pine sol flavor. Not sure if it was in the batter or on the griddle but couldn't take more than a couple bites. The Mexican hot chocolate tasted like dirty dishwater with a splash of chocolate and a sludge on top that I'm assuming was cinnamon. Between every interaction with the waitress she would disappear for long intervals of time. Horrible service and horrible food. I would never go back there and I visit Kauai quite frequently. read more

This place deserves 0 stars! Service was awful, food was bland, and it took me about 15 minutes to get the check and I asked the bartenders (yes, 2 of them) politely for my check four times. Didn't expect to go to a Mexican restaurant on Kaua'i, but was pleasantly surprised. Great, authentic Mexican food and really good service. As we've been disappointed in the service at the higher end restaurants here in Kaua'i, it was refreshing. Had huevos rancheros and a breakfast burrito for brunch. Not sure why all the bad reviews -- my experience here was EXCELLENT! I actually read the yelp reviews prior to coming here and was nervous. My girlfriend and I had just finished a morning visit at the beach and were craving some mexican food. Despite the yelp reviews, we gave this place a shot. Glad we did. Service was fantastic. Chips and salsa were great. Cadillac margarita pitcher was great and margaritas were made just the way I like 'em -- not too sour and not too much alcohol taste. Food came out so fast it was almost like they knew what I wanted before I ordered (food was out in less than five minutes and presentation looked great). I had the carne asada tacos and they were delicious -- totally hit the spot for my mexican food craving. Not saying this place is the best mexican food I've ever had but the atmosphere, service, food quality were very good. I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to write one just to help this place out after seeing the bad ones. My experience here was great. Give it a chance. Also, try Verde up the street. That's also a great local Mexican restaurant. Service wasn't as great there, but the food was excellent. read more

Great food. I came expecting to be disappointed as I have many times before when looking for good Mexican in far flung places but this restaurant exceeded expectations. This place gets one star for it's location, not for food or service. While we usually check yelp before we stop, traffic was bad and we spur of the moment decided happy hour called. A real mistake. The happy hour margaritas were $6.00, small, and weak. The $5.00 happy hour Negro Modelo draft was warm. The nachos were really bad. There were very few people in the place but the service was still really, really slow. To top it off, they had added a item to the bill. I don't understand how they are still in business. read more

Believe it or not my husband and I were at the Harbor Mall in Lihue and ate at the Mariach's at the Harbor Mall and here we go to Kaapa and here is another Mariachi's. We live on the Island of Hawaii and again we have to travel to Kauai to get good Mexican food. At this Mariachi's we had beer and guacamole dip, the beer of course was great, the guacamole was fantastic. I definitely recommend Mariachi's in Kaapa or the one in Lihue if you want good Mexican food. read more

My $10 margarita tasted like frozen salt water with no tequila, the cheese dip(queso, for those who know Mexican food) was very obviously Velveeta heated in a microwave with a tiny scoop of Chorizo-wasn't even heated all the way to the bottom of the bowl. This is my go to place for real authentic Mexican food. There are a lot of Mexican food choices on the island, but this (both Lihue and Kapaa) is by far the best of the best. In Lihue the tortillas are made fresh right in front of you, all the food ingredients are fresh from the island and prepared to perfection. Most definitely the worst Mexican food I have ever had. It was almost a joke. I had the vegetarian burrito and it only had fried onions, corn, and a few beans inside of it. Nothing else! There was no salsa, cheese, refrained beans, tomatoes, guacamole or rice...not in the burrito or on the side. It was unpalatable. The burrito did not come with any sides or toppings. When we asked the waiter, he explained that that was all extra and that he had had bad food there too! The chips were stale and the meat had an odd flavor and texture. My blended margarita had large chunks of ice in it and was watery and bland.
