7/28/2024- Always on the hunt for the hole in the wall places to eat.. Decided to stop by and try a few items.. Located in a strip mall- nicely and colorful decor.. I like how the menu had lunch specials for the week.. Ordered the Taco President -with carne asada- Enchilada with pork carnitas-.. Prices very reasonable- Very impressed with the handmade corn tortillas.. Nice crunch and meat was tender.. Enchilada was perfect tasting.. sauce and the meat- Salsa had a nice fresh flavor.. $13.68 plus a soda.. Owner was very nice and asked how the food was.. great customer service.. Such a lovely, family owned restaurant! My dad and I made a stop in Carson City while passing through and had such a fantastic lunch at Maria's! While visiting from Las Vegas, we decided to sample Maria's Mexican Restaurant and I am so very glad we did!! The restaurant is a "mom and pop" place in a strip mall...but the food is IMPECCABLE. The gracious hostess seated us and we were addressed and our orders taken within minutes. The menu selections are plentiful and EVERYTHING is homemade: tortillas, salsa, sauces---every bite I tasted was better than the last. I felt welcomed and comfortable and they even let my octogenarian mother order the kids' menu chicken tenders.... The restaurant has a festive ambiance and it was very clean and tidy. We came here about 4:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. It was not very busy and they have about 15 tables inside. We were greeted by two young ladies who brought us menus, waters and chips and salsa. We each looked through the menu and my wife decided to order the chicken, steak and shrimp fajitas. I ordered the burrito. We both really enjoyed the salsa and warm chips while our orders were being prepared. Our orders arrived and looked yummy! My wife really enjoyed the fajitas and my burrito was just okay. We timed our meals wrong today and needed a quick go to for late lunch in north Carson. I remembered my friend Mike recently wrote a nice Yelp review for Las Maria's. So off we went! I am lousy with introductions and socializing in general. I blame it on the fact that I was a detective back east for years, which can be a very anti-social existence. Today, I believe we met Maria, a very head strong, straight forward woman. Turns out she's also a very friendly host. We ate for 15-20 minutes and chatted for 45. Of the many things I learned, Maria can sing and dj, plus, they have karaoke every Friday. All the food here is authentic, hand prepared. Safe to say, we made each other's day. Being not terribly creative, my wife and I ordered #7's. That's two enchiladas (with chicken), beans and rice. The food was terrific. The iced tea even better. The conversation, the best. I'm not usually one to complain and we've been returning customers because the food and service are always great. However, the last two times we've tried to visit, the doors were locked with only a note posted. The first time, the note said they'd return at lunch (no specific time), but it was already around 3pm. Tonight, we even checked online before making the driving over, but when we arrived, the sign said they'd be back at 6pm for "karaoke night"--yet at 7pm the doors were still locked. read more

Was in the town with the family when we came across Maria's Mexican Restaurant since it was close and open. Thank god we came because we were very hungry and the food was authentic and delicious!! Also loved the vibe of the place and the Day of the Dead Sugar Skull decorations they had hanging up. I went ahead and ordered the Carnitas Chimichanga with a Cazuela and a Molcajete. Beyond my tastebud expectations. The Cazuela was made to perfection with the right amount of mixture with alcohol and my chimichanga had me doing the happy dance in my chair from how good it was. I had some other business in this strip mall shopping center at Winnie and Carson street and it was a little early for lunch, but I thought I'd try this little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It's so "hole in the wall" that having lived here in Carson for years, I've never really noticed it, and it's been here for a long time. Entering I could tell this place had an authentic feel, not like some chain place or Chipotle. Empty when I arrived before normal lunch hours, but I was seated promptly and brought comp chips and salsa. I saw they have lunch specials and the price seemed right for these days with most items priced at $9.99. I decided on the Chimichanga which I haven't had in years. Mostly these days I've been having hand held burritos, so this was a change up. The rest of the menu was quite diverse with many items not offered at most Mexican restaurants. I'll have to come back and try other stuff on the menu later. The Chimichanga arrives, cut in two garnished with lettuce. The flour tortilla was deep fried crispy and the al pastor pork filling with rice and beans was quite tasty and had a very Mexican flavor, as opposed to some more Americanized places I've been. The al pastor was on the spicy side, but good. It's a pretty huge portion, so I took home half, but if you're a big eater, you might finish it all. One thing to know, is a 15% service charge (tip) is included in the bill. If you want to leave more, you can , just be aware 15% is already included. I leave more usually. Food - Excellent! I had the Mixta Tostada with octopus, shrimp and imitation crab. It was flavorful and fresh. Also, I had some street tacos with al pastor, onions, cilantro, and lime. My friend tried the Maria's Burrito. The Chile Rellano was freshly made and tasted fantastic. We enjoyed some complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy and delicious. The horchata is one of the best that I have had. It was not too sweet and refreshing. Ambiance and Service - Excellent! - Clean tables and a small tv playing soap operas. We got to chat with the owner and she is so nice! She kept checking in on us since there was a wait for our food. She was our server too. COVID protocols - Excellent! The guidelines are at the hostess stand. You can use hand sanitizer and pick up a menu. Restrooms are very clean and orderly. Maria's is a neighborhood gem located in a shopping center. Very unhappy with this place. The $11 margaritas had about 3oz of liquid and not much of that was tequila. Dinner was ok, nothing special. Once the server put our plates on the table she was done, she never once came back and offered us anything else. The restaurant was EMPTY, so it wasn't like she was busy. When I went to pay the bill (4 people) it came to $153! I was a little surprised at the price. But there was a line to add a tip and then total to charge...come to find out it's the restaurants policy to BILL you 15% gratuity! so this terrible waitress was given a 30% tip! I will never go back and I WILL tell everyone I know not to go there! read more

Wouldnt recommend. Ordered on doordash and found a dirty toothpick hiding inside the burrito. Huge safety issue. Burrito was okay before the toothpick, although the cheese inside the chile was hard and not melted. Horchata tasted as though it was extremely watered down and had little to no flavor. read more

Very friendly staff and authentic Mexican food! My friends and I decided to stop in and try Maria's instead of waiting in line at another over-crowded local eatery. What a pleasant experience. I had Chimichanga and everyone else had an assortment of different burritos...delish! The young man taking care of our table made sure we had plenty of chips and salsa. In short, we will be going back. This is a small, local restaurant just waiting to be discovered by more Carson City residents & visitor's. I don't know how to rate this place I've been here Multiple times. Always had gotten good food and service. Today I go in order what we order, came in a reasonable amount of time. Food was good service was good, then came time for the bill. Now, normally I'd pay and leave no problem. Well, I look3d at the bill and there was an extra charge for service and Gratuity. Now, I was going to leave a tip, in cash, but, because I was complaining the owner got upset that I was complaining about the service charge and then started complaining that I was paying with my card. Then started telling me how I should talk to him with my son in front of me. I told him to f off. Don't tell me how I should be I was ok tell he started telling me that. I asked what's the law say and he started going off on the difference between a service fee and a gratuity fee. Well, my friend, you won't have to worry about me being back, because I won't be. But, I am filing a complaint with AG'S OFFICE AND THE 15% your charging is over above the 1 to 1.5 percent your allowed to charge. I'll never go back here and people should really read there menus. read more
