We saw this hole in the wall restaurant and decided to just walk in blindly not knowing what they serve. We asked the woman who worked there what was good to eat but there was a language barrier so we used google translate. The only reason I'm putting three stars is because I had made an order online and apparently it doesn't go directly to the restaurant. So when I showed up for my food, it wasn't ready they hadn't answered the phone to receive my order and I had to wait an additional 40 minutes just for my food to be served to me. The pupusas are stuffed and oozing cheese, so good! I get the pupusas with cheese and loroco and bean and cheese. Both are delish and jam packed with cheese. They are hearty, I am full after two. They are generous with the curtido (pickled cabbage), too. I do agree with one of the other reviews that they are a little slow, but we had no problem today with takeout. The desayuno tipico (Salvadoran breakfast with blended black beans, plantains, eggs, cheese and crema) is also really good here. Pretty solid meal with reasonable proportions for reasonable prices. I sampled platanos fritos solo (fried plantains) and three of the pupusas: queso con frijoles, queso con loroco, and queso. The fried plantains were probably the best fried plantain experience I've had yet. In the past, I've found that it's hard to get a good enough crisp on the outside of the plantain while keeping the inside soft (most places either just achieve darkened but soft plantains or dried out plantains); Maria's plantains were more along the lines of what I was hoping for, sufficient crisp on the outside while maintaining the sweet plantain texture. Pupusas were quite good, my preference stack rank: 1) queso con loroco , 2) queso con frijoles, 3) queso. I'd say don't go the just cheese route -- was a bit too much cheese. But con loroco was the clear winner with con frijoles a close second. The loroco pupusa was honestly the best loroco pupusa experience I've had. Really good experience. If you want amazing pupusas this is definitely the spot. They are so good not greasy. The horchata is good. This place is worth the drive and worth the wait. Yes you will be waiting a while for your food but that's because there's only 2 ladies taking orders, serving people and cooking the food. You definitely have to be patient I suggest you call it in. I first went here a few months ago and got the carne asada con chorizo plate which was spectacular. The meat was perfectly seasoned. The rice was fluffy and flavorful and the beans were perfect. Today I decided to try the pupusas (currently only $2.75 a piece) which is a F***ing deal. THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. I went with the revuelta pupusas, but I have a feeling you can't go wrong with any of them. I couldn't recommend them higher. I thought they were finishing up when we got there, but they were actually still waiting on their food. Now I'm really upset. There were three other tables still waiting... how much longer until our order comes?! Aside from a bit more masa than my mom would make them, the flavor is there!! The curtido is great, not too salty and perfectly spicy. The salsa roja is a tiny bit watery but compared to some places I've been, it's good and it has a nice flavor. Bottom line: reminds me of home. Give them a try. read more

I order in the separate nook where they have a single little table and the counter. The lady was friendly and took my order of fried yucca, fried pork, with rice and beans, two tortillas, and salad. $5.99. Cha-ching! Right? What the hell, for that price I'll tag on a Mexican soda with the real sugar too. I sit down by a nice window seat and wait, and wait, and, no, actually only two waits, not that bad. Wow, big, thick, finger length chunks of fried yucca root, fried pork chunks (didn't look too good), a lemony salad of chopped radish, cucumber, lettuce, and carrots, and a whole bucket of pickled cabbage all to myself, but what to put it on? So I grab a piece of pork, it's very crispy. Suspiciously crispy. Crispy like a broken plastic cup crispy, Ok, into mouth and, one chew, hmmm, two chews, this is weird, three chews, what IS this?, four chews, this is straw, grab napkin, Ok, out of mouth. Seriously impossible to eat, no kidding, seriously, and for reals. Now the yucca was a different story. This was actually good but alas there was nothing to dip it in or put on it but it was so good I made my way through four chunks and then realized part of my smorgasbord was missing. No rice, beans or tortillas! Hey, they promised!! Up to the counter to reinstate my order. Back to the table to wait, and wait, and, ok here it is. A small plate of soupy beans and very, very mediocre rice. The tortillas looked like they had just popped open the pack and nuked'em for a couple minutes. Somehow the beans tasted ok, some bean flavor there but not much else. Hey, I was looking for any sunshine I could find. My husband is Salvadorean and these are the best pupusas we've had in the neighborhood. Pupusas taste home made, super tasty, the masa is soft and freshly made (unlike other places that just reheat pupusas). The two ladies are nice and hard working.
