I love the quality and variety of donuts that Marie's offers. I prefer this shop over any other in my area.

There are several forces out to deter my enjoying a good meal: 1. Getting my fat content read at the recent Capitol Bike Event. 2. Having a person with an eating disorder present at a buffet. The first is my fault. I'm not obese in person, but according to the standards set forth by the WHO (World Health Organization) my BMI was "25 or more and less than 30" = High (Pre-obese). After that fateful blow to my spandex arse-spanning bike shorts, I proceeded to down the freeze supplied by Merlino's and then promptly stood in line for the free popsicles. My few minutes of depression were definitely prolonged by the free frozen sweets. The second foulness are people with eating disorders. Granted it is a sad state of chosen mental affairs, but when you go to a buffet and all they get is an iceberg salad with no dressing, I find myself eating more to make up for their lack thereof. Why waste food on a plate with all the people starving around the world? I am sympathetic to the case, having been there once, but when faced with someone who is adamant in ruining her life, I've chosen to walk away. There is truly nothing one can do. I am, however, happy to state that I always ate the grilled chicken off of their salad, since they were ready to throw it away. So with these two weapons of mass destruction, I found myself riding my bike one early Sunday morning over to Freeport and came face to face with the devil: Marie's Donuts. Marie's Donuts has been a fixture on this corner for years. I'm just shocked that I had yet to stop by and savor their fluffy confections. Pretty round maids, glazed and sitting on display. Moving forward slowly in that line made the waiting even more agonizing. Old Fashioned. Blueberry. Powdered sugar. Maple bars. Apple fritters. Donut holes. Twists. Cinammon rings. I walked off with two Maple Bars and two Old Fashioned donuts. My friend had the Apple Fritter. Nothing beats a fresh warm donut. We stood there in the parking lot, next to our bikes, savoring each bite with the sun on our backs. Four donuts for less than $5. In addition, be prepared for the onslaught of cars and lazy chubbies not wanting to walk the extra 300 yards or so from more parking down the street. The private lot is usually full. After a second visit, I finished only half of my chocolate glazed blueberry donut (I justified the consumption based on the 6 miles we rode, which apparently is nothing) and thought to myself as we pedaled off, if this was Hell, then I had just signed my papers over to Satan himself. I finally understand why this place has almost 300 reviews and almost 5 stars. It's that good! I had it bookmarked for awhile but was never in the area for breakfast so I jumped at the chance to stop by on Sunday morning because it is a quick drive from the Farmers Market. I'm not sure why they don't open until 10, but I'm glad they open later and stay open later because who gets up before 8 or 9 on the weekend anyway? At least I know after I get up and stop by Marie's, all the donuts won't be picked over. It's a super small place with a walk up window and small parking lot. There was only one or two other people in front of me in line so service was quick. I paid $3.00 for 3 donuts and was on my way. I chose the Maple Donut (my favorite, such a great strong maple flavor), an Old Fashioned Glazed (so fresh and flaky) and a Chocolate Buttermilk Bar (so buttery paired with amazing silky chocolate frosting). When I first moved to Sac long long ago, I heard about Marie's donuts ("best in Sac"), and had to try for myself. When I finally caught them during their odd business hours, I agreed that they were really good. Not the best, but very good. It had been a few years since my last visit, but since I was recently in the Land Park area for the Doggy Dash, I decided to fuel up with Marie's. We had glazed and chocolate donuts and glazed donut holes. The glazed and chocolate were extremely fresh, slightly warm, moist, and delicious. The holes were terrible. Now that I live in San Francisco, I rarely get a chance to come and get Marie's Donuts. But whenever I am in town, it is always on my to-do list. Marie's has been here for as long as I can remember and the quality is top-notch (this means size, taste and price). I have never had a bad, or even "okay" donut here. They are all great. With that being said, my all-time favorites are: -Apple Fritter: crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside with plenty of apple in it. Nicely glazed and very big. -Maple bar: these are absolutely amazing if you get lucky and are there right when they are made. The donut has an slight crunch when you bite into it, and the warm and fluffy inside is great. Their maple icing is full of flavor, but not too sweet at all. Recent favorite: -Cream-filled donut: this is a round shaped donut sliced in half and filled with cream. This sounds like a pretty generic donut, but the cream they use is really delicious, it kind of tastes like cool whip and they don't skimp on the cream at all. It's a really tasty alternative to the standard maple bar or regular glazed. Notes: -Walk up to the window and order; there isn't anywhere to sit and eat. -If you are a late-night snacker, Marie's donuts are best when they are freshly made, starting at 12:00 a.m. -They have a small parking lot, but street parking is free as well. read more

Marie's Donuts is next door to Freeport Bakery. It's a very retro donut shop. It has long hours and they have a walk up window with a long line. (Long lines are a good sign.) I've seen it several time when I wash my car, but have never tried it out. Today was the morning to give them a try. (From the person in front of me it sounds like you need to buy over $5 to use a credit card.) I tried the cinnamon roll shaped donut. It was very moist and fresh and tasty and settled well in my tummy. I'm not a big donut fan and haven't eaten one in years. They are also reasonable price. They have a bigger selection then Safeway and they are the same price or cheaper. I was shocked by the good price. We next door to Freeport Bakery to get their Cinnamon roll for a taste test and Marie's won hands down. Freeport's was very dry and so bad that no one finished it and it was tossed. That's a really bad sign as I love cinnamon rolls. I was really shocked that the donut cinnamon roll won. The dough was rolled and just like a cinnamon roll it hand a vain of cinnamon sugar in that rolled part. I will be back. This summer I will head to North Northern California (like the Oregon border) to find a better Blueberry donut that is better then Marie's. But I doubt it will be. You can always see the workers making fresh donuts - I think that's part of the appeal, I love watching the donuts being made! Been wanting and craving some old-fashion donuts. And when I mean "old-fashion" I mean the type of donuts you normally get from a donut shop and not Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kremes. A few years back they won Sac's Best. They retain my vote. This is a few-mornings-a-week stop for me since I work at McRatchet. (These donuts made me the man I am.) The buttery glaze on the ... glazed donuts define their excellence. They're at the opposite end of the spectrum from cardboardy grocery store donuts -- always light and absolutely fresh. I buy other stores' donuts, too, and on the Pocket-to-Broadway corridor I find all to be good. But Marie's wears the crown, easily. Marie's is a great old school neighborhood donut shop. Their no frills location in Land Park is not open 24/7, but they open late in the evening and hit all the right times. The restaurant only has a walk-up window, but they display their deep fried goodness in the long window as you wait, giving you plenty of time to change your order several times before just ordering one of everything anyway. Their standard menu includes all the standards including great old fashioned and excellent apple fritters. Marie's has a unique way of making filled donuts; they cut them in half and make a donut sandwich with a cream or jelly filling. It is a little different at first. They take credit cards and are often busy making everyone happy. How can you not like a fresh donut? It is a great stop after a late night for a quick bite, and especially waking up to a box of leftover donuts in the kitchen. Their Freeport location makes it easy for most people in the southern part of Sacramento to stop by coming to work or after the bars.
