I'll probably be single if my better half gets a hold of this review. Here's the thing... Marion's just isn't all that great. It's also not, as some people try to make it seem, the worst pizza around. It fits squarely in the middle but flourishes based on an abundance of undeserving hype. I'm okay with that... in fact, I applaud them for building up so much goodwill with the community that people are now blindly attracted to their pizza - similar to the spell that Skyline Chili seems to have cast on all of Cincinnati. Marion's pizza tastes alright. Their ingredients aren't particularly high quality and the pizza is actually rather expensive considering how small they are. 13" thin crust deluxe pizza for $17 on a small street in Dayton? Only because everyone I know is obsessed with this stuff. If you sat one of their pizzas down next to one from A Tavola in downtown Cincinnati or Jean Paul's Paradiso, or any other place that takes pride in the quality of their pizza and the ingredients... you would think that Marion's was one of those 5 for $5 frozen party pizzas that you find on sale at the grocery store. Blah. They get 3 stars instead of 2 because their pizza makes for a good hangover meal after a long night at Dayton dive bars. read more

Eh - I don't get the fascination... it was fine, but pretty much tasted like any divey pizza place to me. It wasn't bad, but certainly unremarkable. I will say that my husband (who lived in Dayton during his high school years and remembered the place fondly) and my 9-year-old liked it better than I did. Though my husband remembered them having really good root beer on draft, which they didn't any more. They only had a few basic domestic beers on tap - nothing I wanted. The place was interesting enough - had fun looking at the pics on the wall, and reminding myself of celebrities I hadn't seen since Match Game went off TV. Oh - and we were freezing the whole time, and they had one shaker of parmesan and one of red pepper flakes at the counter - none to keep at your table, just weird. read more

We've been here a few times while in town visiting family, and I really like Marion's. It's got an old school/divey kind of vibe to it. First, the ordering situation could certainly be improved. I don't mind ordering at the counter and going back up to pickup my food. The (mildly) annoying part is ordering & paying for you food, then moving 10 feet to the left and ordering and paying AGAIN for your drinks. This could be streamlined, IMO. I really like the food at Marions. The pizza and subs are both really good. Nothing fancy, just good food. I'm also a fan of the crumbled sausage and thin crust. A Dayton landmark. Their pizza is unique and awesome...thin, crispy crust cut into squares. Marion's isn't gourmet food. But they don't pretend to be, so who cares? I think this place is my 2nd favorite pizza place in Dayton. *Tip: if you like your pizza crispy, ask them to cook yours in the "old" ovens (they know what this means), and ask for it well-done. To some, it may not make sense why people of Dayton love Marion's but there is something about this place... The sweet tomato sauce, wafer thin and crispy crust, oregano flavor, and bite size toppings are addictive. If you really want the flavor blast, order only pepperoni. This is the one pizza place that I will. Be warned though, a large pizza is more like a medium from most establishments. The yellow walls and dated decor only add to the charm. Getting straight to the point.... This is mediocre pizza at best. There is nothing homemade about the pizza as the crust comes out of a box, the sauce out of a can and the cheese out of a bag. Marion's Piazza has been a Dayton staple for 45 years. I think it's one of the best pizza restaurants in Ohio! When my family visits, they must have their Marion's fix before they head back home! They're known for their simple, small square slices and thin crust. Personally, my pizza toppings are pretty boring with just pepperoni. However, when it comes to Marion's, I order pepperoni and sausage. I don't know what it is about their sausage, but it's delicious. This pizza is dangerous. Because of the crunchy crust and the tiny squares it gets cut in, you can eat a whole pizza all by yourself before you've even realized what you've done. The other thing is once you've been here and you go again, it's very hard not to bite into it while it's piping hot since it comes straight out of the oven to you. Look around. When you watch people eating after they get their fresh pizza everyone is doing that "oooh, oooh, hot cheese" thing with their mouths after they bite into a slice trying to cool it without having to ungracefully spit it back out. About the pizza: the sauce is sweet and uncluttered of too many spices. The cheese is the bomb. Just mozzarella...none of this mixed cheese nonsense. You must get sausage. Even if you think you don't like sausage - you have to. It's weird looking, but oh so good. I don't even LIKE sausage! It's thin crust and edge to edge. Some ask for it crispy on the edges and don't even ask your friend if you can have all the edges. You get your half / they get theirs. Service: Just go for the pizza. Don't worry about the customer service. You're there for pizza. If you wanted people to fall all over themselves taking care of you - don't look for it in a pizza joint. Price: If you're looking for a bargain, it's probably not here...but the pizza is good and worth it. If you're looking for cheap, get the lunch special. Pizza is always tasty and consistent. I don't personally love the sauce as I prefer a marinara style. This is a sweeter sauce. It's a total preference. The beer was excellent. So I've only been in Dayton awhile and most of the "dayton classics" people mention are actually Cincinnati classics and since I've grown up there I've had them before. I went here on a Friday night since it is close to my house not expecting anything particular. However I was given a treat. I ordered a pepperoni and sausage pizza to go and it took about 10 minutes to be ready. While I was waiting it looked like they had some arcade games in the back and an area for private parties. They also had a small bar and coolers of beer to go. When my pizza was finally ready I took it home and was amazed. First of all its a thin crust pizza and they cut it into tiny 1x1 squares. It makes it a lot easier to eat and I felt like I was getting more as I was reaching down to get a piece of pizza. But it wasn't just that Marion's Pizza was hands down the best pizza I've ever had. Comparing it to your nice 50 dollar pizzas in Chicago, Deweys, and all your national chains and I would def pick this one. read more

Marion's Piazza is a great thin crust, toppings edge to edge pizza. Their sausage is particularly good, small and crumbly and covers the whole surface of the pie. You can tell that they have a good thing going because they can afford to be a little bit quirky. They do not give free refills on pop (it's pop here in Dayton, not soda) and they only take cash. It is called Piazza, not pizza, because each store is made to resemble an outside Italian piazza. Many of their locations have signed photos of celebrities who have passed through Dayton. Wonderful local pizza joint that is a must try when in Dayton, Ohio. Parking is in the lot provided by Marion's. The restaurant has a causal setting with many seating options. I had their pepperoni and sausage pizza. The pizza is a thin crust style, cut into square pieces. The sausage is a shredded style that is quite delicious, but the pepperoni is loaded with the most flavor. The sauce has a sweet tomato flavor which compliments the rest of the pizza well. My wife and I tried this when they had their anniversary discount, never had it before. We bought a large pepperoni and ham, a large sausage and mushroom, and a reuben. The ham is thin like its shaved, which was really good. The sausage was a bit overwhelming however, not in taste but in quantity. The pizza itself has never been disappointing. My family has had birthday parties and such here. Today was the big pizza deal day for the 50th anniversary. Of course we waited in line for a couple hours prior to opening, no big deal. I'm guessing it is the guy running the place that we came to have issues with. I work in retail and I understand how frustrating it can be, but you do NOT talk poorly to customers. If I talked to customers (regardless of whether it is a mistake of the business or the customer) the way he did to us, I wouldn't have a job. That being said, there is just something about the place and the pizza that keeps you coming back, even though you sit there and watch them dump the sauce right out of a can - and the mushrooms - and the peppers - etc. etc. They certainly aren't looking to win any awards for being the most fresh and unique, but if you put this stuff in front of me I will eat it until I'm almost sick. Marion's makes the best pizza, anywhere, period. I have had probably close to a hundred different makers of pizza, and nothing compare's with Marion's. (Although La Rosa's is a close second.) The crust is awesome...not too crispy, doughy, crunchy, soft...just perfect. Oh and the sauce is just the right amount with perfect consistency. Plenty of toppings, too! This pizza was not made by robots! the sausage looks like Rabbit pellets, and it was tasty, if only because it literally covers the entire pizza. Ultra thin crust and it is sliced into business card sized slices... so don't be alarmed if you eat 16 slices. 2 of us powered the large without difficulty, frankly, being from out of town, I've had better, you could do worse though.
