There are two things most memorable about Mariposa; the service & the fries. Both of these things can take a restaurant very far. Having a waitstaff that is polite, timely & considerate makes you feel at ease & more than once has it been offered to bring a fresh to go tea, drink & even soup, to replace a half finished version.. I love good service & I love giving 20%+ tip and feeling like the waiter deserved it. Second amazing aspect is the fries. They are thin cut straw fries in light oil with rosemary and pepper. The fries are also served with a creamy olive dipping sauce. These fries are so tasty, a real treat & served with all sandwiches at no extra cost. Mariposa is inside Nordstroms on the second floor, it does not have a bathroom inside but there is one on same level near customer service. I have had 2 sandwiches but other than the fries being amazing, the sandwich itself didn't come together the way it should. I think it would go a long way if they were to melt some of the cheese. The salads are crisp, fresh & full of flavor. The soups are also rich and delightful. This Is a good retreat if you want to escape some of the busier restaurants at La Cantera & you won't miss out on flavor. read more

Do yourself a favor. Satay away from this place. Right from the moment my wife and I walked in. Karina Benitez was very rude and plain out nasty. Before even saying hello she right away told us she only had tables outside. We could clearly see plenty of available tables inside but we said fine we will take the outside table, it was like lighting a fire she did not like that and took us outside throwing things around and assigning us to the corner dirty table even if we could see plenty of clean available tables so we just left. I've known this place was tucked into a corner of Neiman's for years and I'm not sure why I've never tried it before. After mentioning it to some girlfriends, we decided to have lunch here. The meal started out great with a complimentary baked popover with some strawberry whipped cream cheese. The chicken consomme that followed was delicious. It had a rich chicken flavor. I could have had a much larger serving of the consomme. For my meal, I ordered the crab cake salad. While I'm not usually a fan of bitter field greens, these weren't bitter at all. The salad dressing was nice and light and didn't overtake the crab. The crab cake itself was a good sized crab cake. It was nice a brown on the outside and cooked perfectly. While it wasn't a good day for sitting outside, the outside seating area was quaint. It looked like it had several misters across the roof area for warmer days. Excellent food and service. The type of sophisticated menu you rarely see in San Antonio. It's too bad their location is so deeply buried within Neiman Marcus--I'd love to see them get more traffic. Despite the sophistication, they also do a great job serving kids--lids with cups, a thoughtful children's menu and no hint at annoyance from spilled drinks, etc. As to the menu, they have the widest and most interesting choice of salads I've seen in town--great place for a light lunch or dinner. I had low expectations for this place cuz let's face it - what could an ostentatious store like Neiman Marcus know about restaurant?! Turns out, they know a thing or two about food! Upon sitting down, the server brought an expresso-shot size of chicken broth (weird, right?) He said it was to clean the palete then he brought a medium-sized puff pastry with whipped butter. The combination of these free appetizers really stimulated my appetite. On to the main course, I ordered their mahi tacos. For $19 I get two tacos - a 2 ounce fish fillet on each tacos sitting on a slaw and topped with avocado (the whole thing looks pretty and appetizing!) The meal comes with a small bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. I was starved when I got here and by the end of my meal, I was satisfied. They also give out this chocolate-covered mint candy stick when you get the check. High-end stores like Neiman are known for their service and attention to detail. Mariposa certainly lived up to Neiman's standards​. From the tentative staff, the quality of food to their cute silverware/decor (the outside seating is pretty on cool days), I think it's definitely worth the price. read more

Recently I decided to treat myself and came here for lunch. It makes me sad that not a lot of people know about this restaurant because it's always seems so empty. I thoroughly enjoyed their complimentary chicken broth and popover w/ the most amazing strawberry butter ever. Yes their prices is a little on the high side but you really do get what you pay for. I know it's kind of frou frou, but I ALWAYS love dining at Mariposa, and at other Nieman's locations. They bring you consomme, a pop-over, and fresh strawberry butter as soon as you sit down. Their espresso drinks are correctly made. The service is prompt and gracious. Presentation is elegant. And you get a nice view of a large wooden roller-coaster out the window. I recommend the mandarin orange souffle, which comes with chicken salad, fruit and poppyseed dressing, a muffin, and the creamy orange gelatin mold. The shrimp over risotto cake is delicious as well, but the portion is a little small. I had the lobster mac and cheese once and could barely make a dent--tasty but extremely rich. read more

Stopped in for lunch recently. Loved it. LOVED IT! Everything is made right there in the restaurant so sometimes the flavors or ingredients will vary slightly but frankly, I like that because you know there's actually a person in the kitchen cooking for you instead of opening frozen packages and heating it up before serving your table. We had no wait to get a table and I loved being served the hot chicken broth, popovers and strawberry butter when I sat down. I honestly didn't enjoy the taste of the strawberry butter, but the rest of my table did - it's just not my kind of food. The popovers are amazing though. Flaky, light, crisp, buttery flavored hollow rolls. Who knew egg batter could be made into such an amazing thing? And the broth was one of my favorite things I've ever tasted. I could honestly make an entire meal out of the broth and popover and be totally satisfied. Don't do that really though, because the menu at Mariposa is great. Soups, salads and sandwiches really never tasted so good. They take classics and give them an elegant and creative twist. The service here was exemplary. Everything we needed was taken care of promptly with nice, friendly smiles. The staff was attentive but didn't hover. My table and I enjoyed every minute of our time there. This place is always so delicious and easy to come and grab a bite with friends. The food has always been well portioned and they are great with accommodating with special dietary needs. When I think of neiman marcus all I can think of the type of flashy,unique and expensive customers they attract. Naturally Mariposa was supposed to appeal to that clientele.The place looks great, the ambiance is not disappointed and the waiters were attentive. That's the good bit. Now for the food. I wish I had the option to switch the chicken broth in a small tea cup for actual tea before my meal. Chicken broth? I've visited countries where you has to lick salt before eating to be respectful but this was whole different level of strange. The bread waitress came with the muffin top and I've never eaten an appetizer so hallow and empty; i was entertained by the hollowness but that should be a major red flag.I still thought that Mariposa was a restaurant for the adventurous souls despite the dull menu. I opted for the chicken pallard Milanese that was supposed to be a herb Parmesan encrusted chicken but I could hardly taste the herb. I've had chicken nuggets that had more flavor. My friend's "boutique burger" seemed tasty but again there is so much you can do with a burger. Overall, it's a restaurant that would rather want their customers to be too tipsy to care for the bland quality of the food in the middle of the afternoon rather than the taste. I may come for their dessert between shopping trips. Restaurants like Mariposa give other slightly pricey restaurants and cafe a bad reputation for being bland and overpriced. 2 stars for the attentive staff and one for the ambiance. read more

Came here with my mom and one of her girlfriends for a little lunch date. We all started with Mariposa's famous popovers with strawberry butter, yum! Mom and I both had the grilled salmon salad with goat cheese... absolutely deliciousss!!! The salmon had phenomenal flavor.. I didn't even need to add dressing to the salad. We finished up with a cup of coffee and enjoyed the view from the outdoor patio before heading back to Neiman's to shop. First off... I have been a here many times for lunch and dinner. I made reservation for my son and his date for homecoming on a Wednesday evening. I just so happen to be at La Cantera the next day and decided to stop by and check to make sure everything was set for Saturday night. Making sure to inform them 2 high school students were dining with them. My son loves it here and wanted to celebrate homecoming with his date. I approached the check in desk and was ignored. Then I got the attention do the hostess who might have been the manager after i talked to her, who was looking at coffees behind the bar. When I told her I just wanted to confirm my reservation, she said "oh we close early on Saturday". I told her I was not aware and just make the reservation the night before and I had not received a call, she said "sorry we have a big party that night and had to cancel your reservation". She just literally canceled it right there in my presence. I stated she should have called me so my son could make other arrangements. Apparently this big party was just scheduled earlier that day. I said well you should have communicated to people that there would be no reservations honored on Saturday. On the flip side she did ask my if I wanted at 12:30 pm slot but come on, this is homecoming. I didn't want lunch. I understand things come up last minute but inform your patrons ASAP. I'm glad I stopped by or my son and his date would have been turned away. This situation makes me rethink ever coming here again. So sad... I really enjoyed coming here. A table was available but they told us they had to seat six people there, although later they put a party of five there. Had to ask for menus twice. Gave 3 of us water had to ask for 2 more waters. I am not sure where everyone else is eating but my experience was the worst. Saturday lunch was worst I eat. The waiter delivered our lunch and blamed the kitchen for not preparing our crab cake appetizer. He later admitted he forgot. I ordered the angus burger thinking this would be a safe selection and I was wrong. The burger looked more like mystery meat and didn't seem like a burger. Lovely little restaurant tucked away on the 2nd floor of Neiman Marcus. If it had been a bit cooler we would have asked for a table outside on the patio surrounded by trees. The restaurant was bright and airy, service was just right and the consommé and popovers were yummy. I tried the specialty margarita cocktail and loved it. We also tried the tempura shrimp appetizer and were happily surprised by the three large juicy shrimp with mixed slaw on the slide. We thoroughly enjoyed our tasty steak salads and were, unfortunately, too full for dessert. It was just a little pricey but considering it is in Neiman Marcus, that wasn't a surprise.
