You be the judge. On Jan 24th I walked in behind another customer. The host spoke in Spanish with that customer who was before me. When I spoke to the host in Spanish, he would only speak to me in English. I thought that was odd. Even though I've been told that I don't look like I speak Spanish, I am fluent. As a first-generation Hispanic American, I was raised speaking both Spanish and English. I was told there was a 45 minute wait and since there is no waiting area, we were asked to wait in our car. I watched several parties get seated without a wait. When I inquired, I was told they had all made reservations the day before. I waited patiently knowing they were spacing an empty table between every occupied table and I respect that. After returning to my car after my second inquiry, I watched a bigger group enter. Although nobody had left, all of a sudden our pager buzzed. We came in and saw that the group who just entered had been seated. The obvious conclusion is that the 2 tables had been available for a while. THEN- Although we had to wait because they were spacing tables, the same host sat a group of 3 at the table immediately next to us about 10 minutes after we had been seated. I asked the host why and he told me that I could sit at the far end of our table to be away from them. Now I really started to feel like something was up. Within a few minutes an older gentleman came and moved that group to another table so that they could maintain their spacing. A family member in my party mentioned that he'd previously had an issue with the same host and a manager had to apologize on behalf of the host's actions. I can only speculate but I feel like this host may harbor some form of prejudice. read more

The five star reviews for MPH... are all true! This is a wonderful restaurant serving a delicious selection of mariscos cuisine. We had a tostada covered in cerviche and a guacamole. Our server, Rocio, was super friendly and she made excellent menu suggestions. Rocio made us feel welcome! The decor is also really colorful and inviting. This neighborhood restaurant is super popular. We came just before dinner and by the time we finished the restaurant was crowded. Clearly, they all know where the best mariscos is. Unique amd Worth Trying Mariscos Playa Hermos is a seafood paradise located far away from the ocean. The menu is full of seafood dishes however if seafood isn't your thing Mariscos offers some popular Mexican dishes that aren't seafood. On this visit we decided to get a few entrees to go. We selected the Fish Tacos, Shrimp in Garlic sauce, Steak Fajitas, Chips/Salsa, and Shrimp. Everything is fresh, flavorful and handmade, even the corn and flour tortillas. The chips are served pipping hot. The salsa had a bit of a kick but was so flavorful, I enjoyed the green over the red, but both are great. I give it three stars because the seafood is two stars but the Mexican food is a four stars. The carne asada is always flavorful. The rolled tacos are delicious, but the salsa roja is spiiiiicy! The service is great, fast and friendly, and the mariachi on the weekends is a fun and cultural experience. Just moved here from the central coast of California and my mom is from Sinaloa so I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to seafood since I've been fortunate to be around fresh seafood most of my life. I really did not expect to find any seafood in Phoenix, of all places, that even compared to what my family makes both in Mexico and California but this place is something else!! Not sure how they get such fresh tasting seafood and perhaps I don't really want to know but this is definitely the place to go for some mariscos!! We came in a Friday night and were told we would be waiting up to an hour and a half for a table, thankfully it didn't even take an hour but we were ready to wait. You get inside and the tables and chairs are so pretty!! They are literal art, I wish I would have gotten some pictures, I didn't want to make other diners uncomfortable. We were seated at a pretty table con el Sol y la Luna. Once seated we were just waiting for a while to get our menus, one of the ladies noticed we were looking around, losing our patience and then informed us that we have to scan the side of the napkin dispenser to see the menu. Would have been nice to have been informed at the time we were seated but oh well. Our server came over soon after, we were not ready to order anything since we had just barely begun to look at the menu a minute or two before she headed to our table. The drink menu is so long, it's a challenge to pick just one so we went with what we knew but with their own twist. My honey got the chingadazo michelada which comes with 12 shrimp, highly recommend this!! I got their version of a mangonada, can't remember the name, wasn't my cup of tea. It tasted of artificial mango and that was all I could taste. We got the calamari appetizer, it was ok, nothing special but it wasn't bad, either. For our main dishes we got the molcajete frío and the aguachiles. The molcajete comes with oysters, shrimp, crab legs and ceviche. It's not the kind of ceviche I grew up with but it's what they call it. It had cubed fish, and a bunch of other goodness but my favorite part was the big pieces of octopus!! Everywhere I've gone I always find myself disappointed when I order anything with octopus because they always are ridiculously small pieces, not here!! And the portions are so big, I brought home a big cup full of leftovers!! Unfortunately I didn't get to try the aguachile but my honey must have really liked it because he finished the whole thing even though he kept saying he was full, he just couldn't stop eating it!! The dining room louder than average - more like a bar or club than a sit down restaurant (the owners should probably do something to help with noise). We were in Phoenix for the weekend coming from Cali, and we stumbled upon this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it out and it was the best decision we made that weekend! It's very hard to find a restaurant with great service and great food to match, this is definitely one of those. It makes me wish I lived in Arizona just so I can come here more often! We tried the shrimp platter because I couldn't decide which shrimp plate I wanted to try. All were delicious, but the camarones culichi stood out to me the most. I've never tasted such a delicious, perfectly spicy sauce for shrimp before. It was so good that I went back home and attempted to recreate the sauce(which was a fail). The highlight on top of the outstanding service, was the FREE tostada they gave us before our meal came out! They had already given us some free chips & salsa which were delicious, & gave us a free tostada too, which was one of THE best tostadas I've had! I wish I had just ordered a plate full of tostadas and their camarones culichi because they were SO perfect. This place is a must try for any seafood lover! Very interesting experience that maximizes your senses. I found myself enveloped in the colorful decor, small space, plasma tvs, and loud mariachi band music. Can be hard to focus on what you're eating with all this activity. But if you enjoy an active, loud vibe, this is the place. I've read some negative things about service, but will say that the place was packed and our service was outstanding. Received a complimentary seafood ceviche tostada to start. On a recent vacation to Mexico, my mom asked Jared and I where the best Mexican food in Phoenix was... This place immediately came to mind for us both! When you walk into the door of Mariscos Playa Hermosa, you feel like you very well may be in Mexico. It feels extremely authentic, with a festive atmosphere, a staff that doesn't speak too much English, and food that is delicioso! It's nothing like the Americanized Mexican / Latin places you've been to before. Don't load up on the chips and salsa as the portions are big and you'll want to save room for what is to come. Their house iced tea is very good if you want something other than a cold cerveza. As Annie D said in her review, I highly recommend going with the Molcajete Caliente with verde sauce. You can't go wrong with that! I ordered something else and ate off of Jared's Molcajete Caliente along with my own. That sauce is incredible! Note that this place closes early during the week. We met some friends there at 7pm and at 8:20 we were the last ones in there and we could tell the staff was ready to go home. I can't wait to return to this local gem of a restauran for another memorable meal very soon. read more

What a fantastic meal I had. I've been desiring amazing Mexican restaurants in Arizona. Since I moved here, I've been to several places that were underwhelming, at best, and generally just not good to me. So, I'd given up on Mexican Food in AZ and I just didn't eat any. Well, a conversation in Yelp Talk about Mexican Food inspired me to check out some different places and this one turned up in my searches on Yelp and other websites. I'm happy to say that I was so thrilled and enjoyed my meal very much at Mariscos Playa Hermosa. Again, another hole-in-the-wall, but still quite the find. Mariscos is located in a pretty seedy part of town, so don't get nervous going there. They close early, so you'd better arrive early. You will find that there is a full bar inside this colorfully decorated resto. Don't eat at the bar. That things not suitable for anything except decoration as the bar itself doesn't extend out far enough to make it comfortable to sit there. (this is a tip from a person who opted to sit at the bar) I tasted a few items off the menu. The shrimp in diablo sauce was my favorite. I ordered extra diablo sauce on the side. The sauce has a smokey taste with the heat of the peppers. Perfect for my heat seeking taste buds. They prepare the sauce "fresh to order".So there is a charge for $3 for the extra sauce on the side to go. I used that sauce to make more shrimp diablo at home later that week. I also enjoyed the camarones culichi... shrimp in green sauce. Culichi is a tomatillio sauce made with some dairy product and cilantro and of course the poblano or tomatillio peppers. The sauce is simply to die for. I left there satisfied and happy! I will return and take a friend for the Molcajete Caliente with verde sauce. Can't wait. I'm sure it will please. They have a check-in offer too, so be sure to check-in. Oh, that parking lot is TINY. Be aware of that when you go. read more

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. My dad was craving ceviche, so I decided to take them to Mariscos Playa Hermosa. There is a reason the reviews for this restaurant is so high - it has great food, great service, and beautiful furniture/ decorations. Before we received our order, we were given chips + salsa/guac. The chips were very oily and I wasn't a big fan, but that initial impression was soon overcome with the best tasting ceviche on top of a crispy corn tortilla. My mom, who isn't a fan of cilantro, said that it was the highlight of her meal. My dad and I decided to share the House Special/ Molcajete ($30 for two people), which consisted of shrimps, two tilapila pieces, two chicken slices, and two beef slices in green sauce. It came with corn tortillas, rice, beans, and salad. None of my family members can eat spicy foods, but there is also an option for the "Diablo" sauce, which I heard is pretty spicy. We were definitely not let down - it was just the right taste and the right temperature. My mom got the garlic shrimp (I think it was $13?) and the portion for the main piece was relatively small-medium in size, but it also came with rice, beans, and salad. She liked the clean taste. The service was great; our waitress constantly checked in to see if we needed anything. The noise level was loud because there were constantly people coming in and out of the restaurant, but that signifies just how many people are fans of this restaurant. Also, for anyone who's curious, there are TVs (might be good for game-days). At the end of our meal, we got a free coconut cake by checking in to Yelp, and the cream on the cake was delicious; the icing tasted like a sweeter version of coconut ice cream. When we were finished, we were way too stuffed. Dad said that we should come back again with the aunts - that's one of the rare times I've ever heard him say, "let's come back again". After months of being locked down without having my cravings satisfied we decided to be adventurous for my birthday and head out to playa hermosa. The last time I visited, months before the pandemic, I always left so satisfied craving for the next time I would visit playa hermosa this time around I decided it would be my last time. The restaurant itself, esthetically speaking, is beautiful. It was recently remodeled, painted and rearranged to feel more welcoming and not as crowded. The staff has new uniforms and everything looks clean and welcoming but the effects of the pandemic are obvious in the quantity, quality and prices. Now, I am reasonable in my expectations that seafood is expensive and thus understand there is a premium. However, the flavors were not there. My taste buds have a good memory of what foods taste like and they were oh so sad at this experience. When I have to add more Chile, like and salt to get a flavor out of the food Wellp we have issues. Why am I paying someone 55+ a plate for me to doctor it up. The aguas frescas at $4.00 a cup were overly sugary and undrinkable- my kids couldn't even finish them. The biggest downfall for me is the loud music- I may have lost some hearing on this evening; you can't even enjoy your diner and forget about talking to your family/friends unless you want to either shout or play charades. For me it' was a sad birthday dinner experience and will be on the search for a better mariscos place. read more
