My husband and I were craving Mexican style seafood and decided to stop by Mariscos San Juan for some take out to share with my parents. It was a weekend afternoon, and the store still had plenty of customers.  We ordered their extra large ceviche (with shrimp and octopus); large super cocktail (with shrimp, octopus, and oyster); and large aguachile green. All of the seafood was fresh and didn't have a fishy taste to it. The ceviche and aguachile had some avocado in them, but not too much that it was a filler for the actual seafood. We were given a lot of tostadas and salditas (saltine crackers) with our order. The portions looked small, but were actually reasonable for the price. We even had some leftovers for the next day! They have a small (maybe 1-2 spots?) parking area in the back, but it was occupied by a truck when we went. We ended up just street parking about 2 blocks away in the residential area. read more

My friend who lives near by thought we should have lunch at Mariscos San Juan. She and her family eat there often, but it was my first time. Each table had jars of hot sauce, saltine crackers, napkins, fried tortillas & limes cut in half. I'm sorry, but I don't want to eat tortillas that are out for who knows how long with how many people touching them. That's just not sanitary. Speaking of not sanitary, the plastic coated menus were covered with bits of food. Yuck. Okay, maybe my menu was the only one that was dirty, but I doubt it. My friend had the Copa Campechana, which is a big goblet filled with shrimp, octopus, avocado, & cilantro in a cold tomato soupy mixture. I had the Camarones al mojo de ajo, which was a plate with sauteed shrimp, tomato rice, and a salad of iceberg, tomato, & avocado. My shrimp were garlicky and buttery, but they were also over cooked and rubbery. There only seemed to be one waitress, and the six tables of customers seemed to be too much for her. She didn't appear frazzled or anything, but we waited a long time to get any help. She also charged us $10 too much, but she did make the adjustment without any hassle. When Mariscos San Juan comes to mind I think of one word..... BOMBA!!! BOMB in English translation..... The food explodes with flavor. I ordered the Camarones Rancheros and my bff ordered the Camarones A La Diablas and two Ceviche tostadas. The Ceviche tostadas were not the best I had ever had but they were 2 bucks each so I was actually surprised how generous they were with that price. It was very fresh and loaded with avocado so I give this 5 stars. The Camarones Rancheros was overflowing with succulent shrimp marinated and sauteed in serrano peppers and tomatoes and onions. I like spicy but not too spicy and it was perfect!! I ate every pepper and shrimp..... My bff ordered the Camarones A La Diabla and it was CHINGON! Bad Ass. Enough said. The service was nice and quick! The ambiance is much like a little hole in the wall but don't judge a book by it's cover until you've tried their Micheladas! (like a Mexican version of a Bloody Mary prepared with a cerveza of your choice) I love this little Mexican hole in the wall. One thing for sure is they are generous in their portions. So come prepared with an empty stomach and hunger pains because you won't leave hungry. We had to go for a walk after to walk it off.... The major highlight of our dining experience was that they serve their coronas with lime, salt, a cocktail shrimp, and a dash of Tapatio! Now, no other Mexican hole in the wall can top that! I love their shrimp tacos and as Asian as it might sound, but it tastes like an egg roll! Their tostada de camaron (shrimp tostada) was on point! The shrimps were huge and tasted so fresh and juicy. The only reason why I subtracted one star is because they didn't have rice and beans... Although they ONLY serve seafood, most Mexican restaurants that I've been to that also just serve seafood usually have rice and beans. Also, the lady who was working at the register as well as the waiter didn't seem to be very welcoming. She was on the phone chopping it up and just told us to seat ourself and didn't even come to drop off the menu till she was done having her conversation. This is a great spot to enjoy some seafood. The tostada de ceviche is made with fish and they add the traditional tomatoes, onions and cilantro. They give a great portion for only $2.50. We also tried the mixta tostada that has octopus, ceviche and shrimp on top. I will definitely keep coming because the service was great and very attentive. Even though the tables were all taken, the waitresses worked fast and always smiling ready to help. Come here for some seafood and a couple beers all for a good price. Seafood and beer! Can it get much better than that? This place must be one of the best seafood restaurants in the South Bay. My group and I ordered the $16 mixto platter to split. The mixto platter was amazing and featured an assortment of seafood marinating in lime juice, tomatoes, and cilantro. You can basically build your own tostada since they serve large tostada shells instead of tortilla chips, as is typical at most Mexican restaurants. All of the seafood in the mixto was really fresh; no hint of fishiness at all. The flavors are super bright and vibrant; it's really a refreshing dish. I also ordered the camarones rancheros, which was equally amazing. The shrimp have a nice kick to it since its cooked with peppers. The shrimp was very tender, and like the mixto, was very fresh. For non-Spanish speakers, it may be a little intimidating at first. At first the servers actually were a little surprised that we didn't speak Spanish fluently. They don't skimp on stacking that tostada with chopped ceviche, salsa, and generous slices of avocados. For a good two-for-one, get the shrimp tostada for $5 - it's twice as large as the ceviche dish, with a grip of shrimp piled on top of ceviche. They also serve shrimp cocktails and breaded fish and rice plates, although a bit pricier. The best bang for your buck - go for the tostadas! read more

During my last visit I ordered a small dish of oysters and when the waitress brought them out she said that she plated 8 of them since they were small. Most xclnt! I love the shrimp tacos, but my new favorite is the huachinaga (fried whole fish). My first encounter with this dish was in Baja and I'm so happy that I can find a a delicious version in San Ho! When we arrived, it is definitly a hole in the wall place. Small, kind of clean...They gave us the menu and they had shirmp tacos for 3 for $5 (what a deal), oh and big campechanas for $10!!! 4.5 stars This place is DEFINITELY worth checking out. To clarify for others, you do sit down -- but it's not "sit down" fancy if you know what I mean. I got shrimp tostados and Chris got some sort of fried fish dish with rice. The shrimp were super plentiful and tasty -- though at the end I got a third tostado to split with Chris that was just pescado, and I think it had a better fish-acid-creaminess(avocado) balance. The shrimp were fantastic but it's hard to really get the acid right when they're so big and piled high (not that I'm complaining!) The only negative was that while they could not put cilantro on top of the shrimp, there's already cilantro mixed into the fish mix that they sit on top of. Chris' fish was tasty and he said the rice was really tasty. Overall, the price is totally right and it's packed full of people -- a definite find! read more

I thought from all the reviews I would find this a haven for great Mexican seafood. I ordered the six oysters. She walked into the kitchen and came out with them less than two minutes later. Not a good sign unless the oysters grow on the half shell. They were gray and room temp. They did not taste right and I braved two of them. Red flag #1 Then, about a minute later the shrimp ceviche came out and it too, was room temp. The shrimp were a bit too fishy tasting which scares the heck out of me. The tostadas were cheap store bought. When I went to go pay the bill at the door, the temperature coming out of their prep area was about 80 degrees. Not what you want when you are preparing seafood. Best mariscos in San Jose and probably in all of northern Cali. I've tried hella marisco spots and this is by far the best one. Taste like seafood from Mexico no bs.
