First time trying this spot and was not disappointed. Had dinner Friday night with a friend and the place was packed but luckily we were able to snag a spot outside which was nice. Waitress was pleasant and took our order right away. I ordered the rigatoni pomodoro, that was creamy and spicy but delicious and a chocolate soufflé, which truth be told was the reason I wanted to try this restaurant. Three stars is for your deeply lame and embarrassing 20% automatic tip for all party sizes. You're embarrassing yourself, Marvin owners: we know how to tip and tip well; you know how to pay a proper living wage to your staff, but you're choosing not to do it (COVID is over). In an improvement, you are transparently listing the fee on your menu, but even the language is misleading and extortionate: phrasing it as if servers aren't "front of house" and would get no gratuity if a diner doesn't add to the 20% automatic fee. And that you would structure your tab print-out so that I'm expected to calculate any additional tip on the initial total *including* your mandatory 20% fee? Unforgivable, really. We didn't seem to have 1 fixed server, we were looked after by 3 different guys, and bizarrely they all had the same ice cold, uncompromising demeanor. At best, they were curt and abrupt. At times they were outright aggressive and always completely unapproachable. If you've ever been to a Dicks Last Resort restaurant where the staff put on an act and treat you like crap, this is a very similar experience, but it's actually scary because it's for real! When a restaurant charges a flat 20% service charge, I guess they don't need to give a flying fork about what their guests think of their service because they've already maxed out. This is my favorite restaurant in LA. Anyone who is rating this less than five stars has no idea what they're talking about. The food is absolutely legendary. The wine list is sublime. Yes sometimes you have to wait but that's what happens when you're at an incredible restaurant. People that want to give lower stars because they have to wait a little bit are ridiculous. Don't try to hate on the restaurant down because you don't understand how restaurants work! Truly, there's not a bad thing on this menu. All the pastas are dream worthy and better than any Italian. The food was decent but overpriced in my opinion and for that reason not comparable to other similar spots. The $20 glass of wine tasted more like a $10 bottle. Also note that they include an automatic 20% service fee but don't give really any service. Then you are meant to tip on top of this because the automatic 20% is apparently towards paying their staff... I'd rate it a 3/10. The rigatoni bolognese was decent at best w a 5.5/10.
