So being new to my neighborhood, I am having a blast trying out all the places I haven't been! After taking Mr. Scout McScoutface. ( not his real name) to Mt Tabor Dog park, I went to Master Kong's. Going back soon and taking my guy. (he had to work today) I didn't eat it all. I had a bite or two and boxed the rest for later. So good! The Jiang Bing were so yummy! I could have eaten the whole thing but would have been too full for the others. The XLB was ok. Most of the broth had escaped. Not too much of a point there. Ordered some food via delivery. I was excited to try out Master Kong, as I've wanted to for a while. I got the cold noodles with chicken, dumplings, and steamed veggies. The cold noodles were perfectly flavored and just the right texture. The dumplings had a nice chewy skin and a juicy filling. The steamed veggies were just a bit overly cooked but not too much so. Master Kong is a solid place to go for house made dumplings and I've ordered from them a good handful of times. I'd say that it's rather consistent. I've both eaten in and ordered takeout and delivery. The space inside is small but has a cozy feel and some private tables as well as a more communal high top table. I always get the xlb, potstickers and house made dumplings and am always happy with the amount I'm given (who wants to order dumplings and only receive 5??). I've ordered the brisket noodle soup a couple times and it's alright but not my favorite. The beef the past couple times hasn't been super tender and the egg was a bit over cooked for my liking. Totally sponge-worthy. Like Elaine from Seinfeld, if I am hoarding my meals out during the pandemic, Master Kong makes the short list. Although the communal environment might make that a bit challenging. This is a place with a few items I crave, so about once a month I visit and try different items on the menu, but always order the pan fried onion cake, soup dumplings, and potstickers. On my most recent visit, we tried the beef brisket with bok choy and it was a delightful surprise. Strategically arriving before the lunch rush, I've never had an issue parking or being seated. And the proximity to I-205 makes this an easy drive from the burbs. The menu is concise and my food order has always been taken promptly. There are are only a handful of tables and a couple of communal seating options facing the kitchen and the front window, so not recommended for large groups. Items are brought out in stages as they are ready and sauces are available at counter. It is just a very simple and cozy spot to get quality Chinese food. But, seriously, that fried onion cake. I've tried it at several other places in town and Master Kong's is definitely the best. I won't order it anywhere else. read more

There was 5 workers all on there cell phone and we had to ask for water and they have us our food in a to go when we were sitting down. We all know my family and I already love this place. I happened to be near here and decided to see if they were offering take out during this covid chaos. Turns out, they do! The best part is that they take their business seriously. Everyone was in masks, hair back, hats and gloves. When I got there, they had a table blocking people from actually going inside. From there, you ordered and signed your receipt (I called ahead). They had two pen holders, one with sanitized pens and the other with used pens. They had a box of masks for people and hand sanitizer. Everything was really organized and clean. Our food, as expected, was delicious. Hot and made to order. We been craving and missing so many of the dishes here, see my previous review about the food specifically! Anyways, just a review to say AMAZING job, Master Kong! I've ordered out at three other places and no one else had every employee in a mask. I feel like a lot of places who are still offering take out are getting lax on the covid prevention front. Food has changed. Everything used to be fresh doughs. Now, it is frozen dough. We ordered JiangBing, Noodles and Pan Fried buns. Pan fried buns was 100% premade frozen food. We got takeout this Saturday and husband+kids went back on Sunday. The JianBing with meat was . Dumplings were soupy. Noodles were chewy. All the dishes were authentic, flavorful, and not too oily -- like home cooking. Only suggestion is not to staple handle of large takeout orders, or make sure the staples are set in. Looking for dumplings and found a treasure. Jianbing might be our new favorite thing. Steamed buns are not normally my go to but these were wonderful. Went here with some friends because they heard good things and OH. MY. GAWD. This place is incredible! The wait wasn't too bad, only had a few parties in front of us but it went quick. You MUST order the Jianbing!! It's so delicious, I'd go back just for this dish alone. We ordered everything from the "house special" part of the menu plus sesame noodles and we were stuffed! With plenty of take home boxes as well! Straightforward dumpling house. No frills, no BS... everything you order is through QR code to load their order page. Then from there you select what you want to order, and you can just keep ordering until you're done eating then pay after you are done. Great idea for people that can't make up their mind or are new to this type of cuisine... The best part about MK is that the quality of the food just sings from the plate! Handmade dumplings are not easy to pull off, but MK does it with ease. IYKYK It can get a little backed up if you aren't there within the fist 45 minutes... That said, it is my son's favorite place to eat when he comes back home to visit. :) If you have a few people from out of town that don't have access to good dumplings, take them here and get one of everything. As far as I'm concerned Master Kong rules Portland when it comes to authentic and delicious Bao. It is a small establishment with the ambiance one comes to expect from a down to earth place like it is. I have been several times and the house made buns and dumplings are consistently excellent. The menu is pretty short so if you are expecting page after page of various dishes as in many Chinese restaurants you eont find it here. However Master Kong isn't about that. The Chinese pot stickers are incredible and different than I have had anywhere. The steamed buns are wonderful and their onion pancake is delectable. Here in PDX, Master Kong is the best! read more

Gave this place another try. I can't do it. For how many other places there are that serves similar stuff this is the bottom of my list. First of all utensils, plates are plastic/paper ok fine I get it Covid. But serving hot dumplings on a fancy paper plate causes it to stick and peels off the paper off the plate. They serve you in to go containers so when you get it it's all packed ready to go problem is you're dinning in and now you have to open these and pour it into plastic/paper bowls seems wasteful to me but whatever. Brisket noodle soup is what I ordered. I did not like it at all. I found it completely awfully bland. The noodles was almost like udon noodles so that threw me off as well normally it's egg noodles. There's no salt no seasonings on the table so I dumped soy sauce in it from the little to go containers it had. It didn't help much. Persevered egg congee my husband liked, it was ok to me. Not something I'd come back for. Chinese donut was probably best thing I had here. Pork dumplings wasn't bad when you're not eating paper from the plates but it wouldn't make me come back again. Went last Thursday as a first timer. Im new to the area so im trying to find my "IT" dumpling restaurant that allows me to eat on a reasonable budget lol we cant always eat at Din Tai Fung. But this place was honestly quite good. The ambience was nice and quite homely. Even though it was empty the staff seemed distracted. I will give it to them because it was thanks giving so i can only imagine they were rushing to go home. The dumpling were great and so were the buns. I am curious in trying the congee. Chinese food is easy to make, but hard to master. Our search of consummate comfort classics that my wife grew up on in China and I've grown to crave in my travels ... led us to seek out Master Kong. It turns out that old proverb about "when the Yelper is ready, the Master appears" is true because we were starving and ready to eat. Jianbing is "the thing" to get from Master Kong, but the overstuffed crepes were light on spice or flavor proving that sometimes more is less. A far tastier comfort was a warm bowl of Mustard Pork Noodle Soup which I'll be hard pressed to not order every session I have with Master Kong. Steamed Xiao Long Bao (XLB) were a-ok; however, an order of Handmade Dumplings was our least favorite order. Olivia enjoyed the Fried Dough Bars (Youtiao) as a filler. Master Kong may not join my list of legends including Master Yoda and Master Luke, but might be my local Captain of Chinese comfort classics. read more

Read the great reviews, but found this place just average. Put ourselves on the waitlist via yelp which was a great option. It's a pretty small restaurant and we when we got there the wait was not long at all. However the wait started getting longer as we finished our meal so take advantage of this feature. We ordered the homemade dumplings, beef brisket noodle soup, Xiao Long Bao, and the jianbing. Food came out quickly but food was just ok. I wasn't a fan if the jianbing which is a street food type crepe with vegetables and a thin crispy fried cracker/wonton inside but others loved it. Service was pretty lackluster. read more

Everything is great except for the beef noodle soup. The beef and noodles were great but the broth was like flavorless water.. pretty bummed about that. Note that it's still take out only. On the day we visited, it started to rain. The owner actually left the shop to grab a popup tent and set it up over the seating outside so we could eat there. It was very nice of him. read more

Congee (very bland and plain) beef brisket noodles (lacked flavor and beef was dry) sesame sauce noodles (most flavorful but missing protein) Jian bing (like a chinese burrito. might be the best thing here) hand made dumplings (plain) Everything seems to be made fresh ,but just lacking. Came in here for their Jian Bing which is basically a Chinese crepe stuffed with various veggies and thing. (menu not descriptive but you can just google) I have had many before and this one did not disappoint. Although it wasn't mind blowing or anything, and I dont think any local Chinese joint around Portland will have that effect on you, it was however very very good. What really made the experience great was their sauce station. Their homemade chili was really really freaking good. Their peanut sesame sauce was super surprising. I think this place is a must for anyone close by wanting to try a local Chinese resturant run by (what looks like) very hard working nice people.
