Can I please know who this Master Kong is? I want to personally thank him for the wonderful and homely meal I had on a Friday evening. As I entered, I instantly felt like I was at home. I was no stranger to their menu and gladly wanted to order everything they had on the menu. However, being a pescatarian, I was obviously limited to a very few things. BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP ME, MWUAHAHA. As advertised, Master Kong specializes in Congee, Fun, and Noodles. But don't let that fool you because they specialize in other appetizers worth getting. I think I ordered way too much but it was the only way to test the waters: Clam Congee, Jianbing, and Vegetarian Steamed Dumplings. ***The steamed dumplings were a special order as it usually comes with pork. Just let the waitress know and she can do a vegetarian version on most things. Sorry to brag but my mommy makes the BEST congee, no contest. So Master Kong was either going to have to make crack congee or bow down. To my surprise, the congee comes out in a nice clay pot as to keep the temperature. Not going to lie, but the congee was excellent. I could instantly tell it was cooked with raw rice and not the cheating way of cooked rice. Lastly, the congee had the taste like it was left boiling with sweat and love. It definitely tasted like home. Oh boy, the jianbing. When I went to Beijing, China, jianbing was one of their breakfast staples and abundantly available on the streets. That being said, because it was made to order, jianbing should be hot, fresh, and crunchy. Whatever else flavor usually came with the sauce and fried aroma. Master Kong has wonderfully mastered the art of jianbing. It was definitely fresh and the crunchiness was on point. The amount of ingredients was just right and the egg coating the crepe was wonderful. There was a kick of spiciness, but not enough to bring out the whole taste of the crepe. The only disappointing factor was the vegetable steamed buns. There wasn't anything wrong with the ingredients inside, but the dough was a bit thick to my liking, which don't get me wrong, steamed buns usually should have a thick shell. I suppose I wasn't prepared for to bite into a thick and dry bun with little taste. Despite the fail in the bun, I would STILL come back. Chinese gotta stick together ya know what I mean? Just kidding. But on the serious note, there's not enough of these homely places with authentic food. You can obviously tell its family owned as you see their little boys running around the place. How nostalgic this was.... I left a freaking good tip (which if you know, I usually don't), with the hopes they continue on their business. They also have $2 HK Milk Tea... It took way too long for me to finally find out about Master Kong. What was I doing with my life before eating here? I don't know, and it doesn't matter. My partner and I ordered the Rougamo and Braised Pork Belly Rice for lunch, which actually turned into multiple snacks throughout the day. The Rougamo was so filling and tasty, we couldn't believe it. The braised pork belly was cooked well, although the flavor wasn't quite as fulfilling as the Rougamo, it was still a great dish for a great price. This place is super easy to miss if you're unfamiliar with the area, especially if you're driving. I ended up having to circle the block after missing it, so keep your eye out if you're picking up or dining in. read more

I wish I'd taken pictures that I could attach to this review, but the food was so mouthwateringly delicious that I gobbled it all down before I thought to take out my phone! I ordered the jianbing and the rougamou- both were among the best I've ever had, comparable even to equivalents I've had in China. The pick up process was seamless- when I arrived, a lady asked for my name, then handed me a bag with my food. I was very impressed by the COVID practices in place. This is my favorite Chinese place in Portland. Everything is great but the congee with preserved egg, jianbing and cold sesame noodle dish are my absolute favorites. They heal me. The ear-splitting music and sticky interior are unpleasant but the food transports you. read more

WOW! I am so shocked at how great the food tastes since I didn't have much expectations for this place. I had a great experience the two times I visited. The service is pretty quick and you also don't have to wait too long for the food. I like ordering their Hong Kong style milk tea ($2) because you can actually taste both the milk and the tea. If you like milk tea, I would recommend for you to try it since the drink isn't diluted. Food wise, the one thing you MUST order is the "Jian Bin". It was so good that I'm still thinking about it!! The "Jian Bin" itself is $6.50 and you can add beef for an additional $2. The dough is seasoning and there's a hint of egg taste as well. The inside had something crunchy, which makes a great combination with the warm and soft and dough. The beef on the inside had a great texture, the beef wasn't hard and was partly shredded so it was easy to bite into without worrying that everything will fall out. The black sesame on top was the cherry on top for this dish! Both the Wonton Noodle Soup and Beef Noodle Soup are very delicious! The noodles in both of the noodle soups were the same and I like how chewy the noodles are. The broth in both of the noodle soup were tasty, I like that it isn't watered down. The wonton noodle soup had huge pieces of shrimp inside the wonton! One thing to keep in mind is the beef in the beef noodle soup is a little fatty. Came here with a fellow Yelper on a Sunday at around 2 pm as part II of our Chinese food journey... Dim Sum at HK Café was part I an hour before (haha). SE 82nd Ave is seriously the new Chinatown. I'm very familiar with the area so it's crazy to me that people are now only jumping on the Authentic Chinese cuisine wagon. I've had their Jianbing from a to-go order before and am not a fan only because I don't like herby, chivy dishes and this was jam-packed full of all of that. If you like it, you'll probably love it! There was also a surprise spicy kick to it, which was pleasant. This visit, since we were still full from dim sum, we only got the Chinese style potstickers. I'm Chinese and the menu was confusing when I read that they had "potstickers" and "Chinese style potstickers" at a Chinese restaurant. What's the difference?! Since we ordered just that one item, I thought we'd get it pretty quick, but the large party of six seated next to us at the middle communal table got their Jianbing, brisket noodle soup, and congee before we even got our food. I think they might've forgotten our order or maybe it just takes a while to make? Either way, it's never great when you see people come after you eat before you. As you can see from my picture, the potstickers look great! It's interesting because the potstickers aren't enclosed all the way.. just at the top. Be sure to grab some dipping sauces from the bar to enjoy with the potstickers! The peanut-garlic one was super good and I don't even like garlic that much. Overall, I can say that I've had better potstickers and it isn't worth $7.50. I do plan on coming back though to try the brisket noodle soup, their spicy noodles, and whatever their "meat folder" is... that's literally what it's called on the menu. read more

Sometimes the hype is just that...hype. I really wanted to love this little place. I'd seen countless instagram posts from foodies that looked incredible, however Master Kong overall missed the mark in my opinion. The brisket noodle soup was very bland and they seemed to use instant noodles. The soup dumpling wrapper was really chewy and too thick. The jianbing was excellent though. The place overall was pretty clean and they had a lot of staff to keep things moving during the dinner rush. Have been to several of these hole in the wall Chinese places around 82nd ave in Portland. I've always left feeling like I had been invited to a sub-par cheap msg-filled Chow Mein party. To my surprise (and recommendation from Portland Monthly, Eater.com, and the Oregonian), this place is too legit to quit! It was awesome! I'm sure I'm misspelling the crepe-like Jing Baio (or something like that), but this was awesome. The steam buns were amazing- exactly like the ones from the streets of Hong Kong. The vegetarian noodles were out of this world. I loved the wonton soup that everyone raves about but my dear wife didn't understand the waitress' description of its contents and took a bite of shrimp. She barely kept it in! Great place. The one star is for the continual open mouth coughing from the staff as they prepared food. Completely lost my appetite after I witnessed this. Do not go here if avoiding COVID is a concern or care if people cough all over the food you will eat. Was odd considering the food all comes out in plastic to go containers and you are only given plastic eating utensils which I presume was a safety issue? In any case, food is maybe 2 stars and so leaving food behind was not difficult. That said it is a bit expensive for what you get. DTF prices. Went here when Kenny's Noodles was unexpectedly closed on a Saturday afternoon. The food has the appearance of authentic Cantonese noodle congee house fare but is not only lacking salt but also flavor in general. I fear it is because they don't use chicken Bouillion base like true Hong Kong noodle shops typically do. It does come out piping hot though. The food: Wontons and fried dough decent. Strongly recommend passing on noodle soup and congee. Also XLB soup flavor is off and a pass too. read more

I love the simplicity here. The soup dumplings were fantastic, better than Din Tai Fung, the sauces were great too. The regular dumplings were not bad, the meat folder was heaven. This place was only okay. My friend and I ordered a jianbing to share, beef brisket noodle soup, and a salted pork congee. The jianbing was crispy and not too bad! However, we didn't realize it was spicy so my friend had trouble eating it. The noodle soup was okay and lacked in flavor so the hot chili oil sauce did help. I've definitely had better beef brisket noodle soup though. I honestly was not too impressed by the food. The service could be better. The waitress made many mistakes. She mistaken my beef brisket noodle soup for a wonton noodle soup and came back out to clarify what we had ordered. She later came out with a plate of dumplings and asked if we ordered it. My friend's congee took forever to come out which I thought was odd because congee should be pretty quick and the table behind us (who came in after us) had already gotten two of theirs. And what's worst is that she gave us CHICKEN congee when we clarified with her twice that we ordered salted pork. We decided to not say anything because we were starving at that point. She did apologize afterwards for the mistake with the order. I will give this place another chance because so many reviews on here say that the service is great. Paid to spend a relaxing weekend in Lake Oswego but thought we would try to support a local Chinese small business. The beef soup was pretty good, it's rare to get quality food from Chinese restaurants. The xiaolongbao was delicious.

My friend's took me out for my birthday din and we decided on this place because HEY look at all the positive reviews! We came in Tuesday night around 6PM and sat right away, it was consistently busy but not packed. Love me some great hole in the wall joints!! We pretty much tried most dumplings and all were legit, juicy, and tasty! These dumplings have a thicker skin, I think that is more common in Chinese cuisine. Many Chinese restaurants have menus that are pages long, but typically only have a handful of recommended dishes. Master Kong is on the other side of that spectrum - small menu, all have been great so far. We were on the hunt for noodle soup which is how we first discovered Master Kong. On a cold, rainy day their beef brisket noodle soup was exactly what we were looking for. The portion size initially looked like we were going to need to order more food, but it was surprisingly very filling. No complaints on the generosity of brisket given. A little more veggies would be nice! This quickly has become my regular order. We saw so many pictures of the Jianbing so we decided to try it. It's a Chinese style crepe that's usually eaten for breakfast. There isn't any meat inside, but topping it off with the garlic sauce is SO yummy. We have also tried the meat folder because it reminded me of the Stewed Pork Burger that we had from Xian's Famous Foods in NY. It's seasoned shredded meat mixed with green onions and cilantro stuffed inside an Asian bun. It's good! Also yummy with their garlic sauce. Finally, we've tried their pork belly with rice dish. Not my favorite, but I didn't dislike it by any means. The establishment is small - enough room for maybe 30 people to dine inside. I saw that they utilize the Yelp Waitlist feature, so you can always check the wait time and put yourself on the list before you go. read more

They have mastered the onion pancake! It's pieces and enough to be a meal itself. I enjoyed the self sauce bar with chili oil, peanut sauce and their house sauce. I have a cold and wanted some soup to help me feel better. Ordered from Grubhub: Wonton soup, brisket and rice, and pot stickers. The wonton soup broth was bland but still oversalted and had a fishy flavor, The wonton themselves were fine and had big chunks of shrimp in them. Brisket and rice was mostly inedible lumps of gristle. Sauce was sweet. They advertise two kinds of pot sticker, the Chinese one which is the traditional crescent shape and a long one which they just call pot stickers. Ordered one, got the other, not a huge deal but they were nothing to rave about. Maybe I ordered all the wrongs things, but I won't give them another shot. Located in SE Portland. Master Kong serves excellent northern Chinese food in a bright pleasant high ceiling placed. The Jian bing is a singular taste and texture sensation. The bing was crispy and toasty, the filling was delicious. We opted for the Jian bing without the additional pork belly - still delicious. The dumplings and buns were great too. I was in Portland for an errand and stopped for a meal before making the 3 hour drive home. I opted for the cold noodles with chicken and an order of xiao long bao. The food was so disappointing, especially for Portland and the great reviews on this place. They gave me the wrong order of noodles and instead of chicken, I got the sesame cold noodles. That was fine - I decided not to send it back, but the noodles themselves were jelly-liked, almost like they were strands of hard jello. Maybe that's just how the noodles are supposed to be, since I'd never had these types of noodles previously, so I can let that go. But the flavors weren't really there either. The worst part of the meal were how awful the XLB were. The skin was super thick and there was virtually no soup in the dumplings. I ended up discarding the skin and just eating the filling. To top it off, my check took forever to come because the waitress was too preoccupied with a friend who had just brought in a SCREAMING toddler. I just wanted to get out of there but instead I politely sat there and endured the screaming while waiting to be noticed. The waitress and the mom thought it was so cute and funny that this kid was just yelling his head off in a restaurant. Ugh. I definitely regretted coming here. read more

My only complaint is it lacked the creamy quality they achieve at Kenny's noodle. Beef tendon with rice: 3/5 The meat was too lean, and not super tender. Steamed bao: 4/5 juicy, soft pork filling with green onion Wonton noodle soup: 4/5 Wonton was flavorful with a whole shrimp in each dumpling, but the soup was not very flavorful. Their jianbing is a must try, especially with beef (an extra $2). The dish isn't too oily and it's packed with a lot of taste and texture if you add some vinegar and other sauces. On its own, however, it can taste a little dry. My main complaint is their beef brisket noodle soup: - Braised brisket: half of it wasn't even meat, but parts of the animal most people would avoid because it's too stiff or chewy to swallow. - Broth: very bland with little seasoning. - Noodles: tasted like thick packaged ramen noodles. Also, the ratio of noodles to broth was way too high. - Tea egg: overcooked, making the white part taste like rubber. Also not soaked long enough in tea with spices.
