Wow. What a throwback to old memories. Every dish this place sells reminds me of my childhood memories and then some!! FOOD We got the JianBingGuoZi and it's a classic Chinese breakfast dish. Master Kong is probably one of the only restaurant that nailed the taste on the dot for me. Highly recommend!! On top of that, we also ordered XLB and Baos. Those were pretty decent and nothing too spectacular. Though, it worth a mention! The down side is that they don't have any soy milk, which is a classic Chinese breakfast drink. It's very strange to not pair these dishes with a classic sweet soy milk. SERVICE The service at this place is very typical. Everything is ultra streamlined. I only ordered the jianbing with braised beef. And it was delicious! It was hot, ingredients were high quality, it was fresh, crunchy, chewy, savory, salty, all the things. The sauces gave it a nice garlicky, spice, and vinegar addition. This place was amazing. The host/waiter/server was super friendly and energetic and it was clear that he was single handedly setting the energy of the whole place. He was very helpful and joking constantly. We got to see some regulars pop in and it was cool to see the rapport that he had built with them. We ordered the Won Ton Noodle Soup, the Brisket Beef Noodle Soup, and the potstickers. We enjoyed our at Mr. Kongs but didn't leave raving about it. The best was the chicken congee and beef stew. We also had xiao long bao, Chinese potstickers, and snow pea leaf. Of the remaining food, the xiao long baos were neither soupy, savory nor hearty with filling as anticipated. Upon entering you're not greeted and we were confused because there was a kiosk at the front, but there were also paper menus on a table, so we weren't sure if we needed to order by kiosk or by the paper menu. We chose the kiosk instead and got a little too excited because we ordered a lot of Then we just sat ourselves. We ordered the beef brisket noodles, the meat folder, the soup dumplings, and jian biang. I was disappointed with the beef brisket noodles because the noodles were more like udon noodles instead of the thin egg noodles. There was some beef flavor. The soup dumplings were okay. The meat folder was two portions which makes sense given the price, but honestly I wish it was just half the price for one portion. I've never had jian biang so that was interesting to try. Went here on a Wednesday afternoon and was greeted immediately upon entering the restaurant by a young man. He briefly explained that I could order through the kiosk if I needed to see images of the menu items or grab a paper menu to mark down what I wanted to order. I was given a container of water and was shown where the cups and utensils were located on the table. I decided to order the Jianbing and preserved egg congee with a youtiao. The Jianbing was crisp and fragrant, I only wished it was more flavorful but it did satisfy my craving. If you pair it with the provided sauces, it was quite tasty. The congee was cooked with a nice chicken stock, with a fair amount of preserved egg and meat. I would highly recommend ordering their fried dough bar along with the congee, perfect combination! Horrendous Service. Forgot one of my items until I reminded them. Didn't say thank you. Didn't make me feel welcomed. No music is already a problem which I know is not required especially if you have good food and that does the talking or singing for you. Wonton Noodle was bland.. everything I toss in it from the onion pancake sauces did not help.. whether it is vinegar soy sauce, chili oil or garlic sauce mixture.. the actual wonton dumplings were decent because you can taste the freshness of the good shrimp and pork they used Onion Pancake had a little crisp mixed with lite sogginess to it.. if it did not have any sogginess to it would've been better Soup Dumplings are their highlight.. tasty liquid pork fat coming out.. didn't need any sauce.. I ate them straight up But yeah service was horrible and oh yeah.. First of all, my family visited this restaurant early last year and were surprised to find that everything was served in to-go containers--paper cups, plastic utensils, and so on. I figured maybe they were still using leftover supplies from the pandemic?? We ordered a few different noodle soups, a few kinds of dumplings, and Jianbing. Overall, the taste was mediocre. We liked Jianbing. Yesterday, we were looking for a noodle spot, and Master Kong came to mind. We were a bit skeptical, but it had been over a year since our last visit, so we decided to give it another try. That was NOT a good idea. I should've known better. They're still serving everything with disposable togo materials: paper spoons, plastic forks, paper cups, paper plates, and those clear plastic sauce containers. The only exception was the two mustard pork noodle soups, which came in regular bowls. The soup tasted just okay--kind of salty, with mediocre flavor. I do like their tender, chewy noodles, though. We also ordered a fried pork bun (which wasn't good either) and Xiaolongbao. They didn't even provide the traditional Xiaolongbao sauce (vinegar and ginger), which was disappointing. Xiaolongbao had very thick skin and had barely any soup inside, and no flavor. It was a disaster. Even my dumpling loving child didn't finish them. I really don't understand what's going on with their togo utensils and tableware. If I'm dining in, I don't want to eat off paper plates with plastic cutlery. Returned to Master Kong with my parents yesterday and they are now open for dine in! The ordering system is still the same; you fill out a paper menu and pass it to one of the workers. You can watch the food being made as you dine. Most of the dishes are made fresh to order so they come out piping hot. However, I found that the pan fried onion cake was cold and not as good as last time. I also found that the dumpling filling could have used more flavor. I would definitely recommend dipping in their garlic sauce because it slaps; it is distributed in to-go cups and I was tempted to take some home with me! Time and time again, this place has been my go-to comfort food and hangover spot (those two tend to leave me craving congee or dumplings ahah). Although the shop is a bit small and run down, they have stellar food. Service is alright, but it is quick. Their menu is also not huge, but from the items they do have, they're all pretty good. My personal favorites are the scallion pancakes, beef jian bing, and congee. Everything else is also really good and all for a great price and portion. The broth was flavorful and the noodles were not overcooked. We wanted to order the steamed dumplings. It was hard to tell from the picture on the screen. Obviously we ordered the wrong item. They turned out to be steamed baos. The filling lacked flavor. It was basically a tasteless ball of meat wrapped in bread dough. We decided to try the Chinese Style potstickers to see how they were different from regular potstickers. The dumplings are not sealed...so there is no juice inside. Once again...lacking flavor. Not sure if we came here their off day but the food was pretty bland. We ordered the wonton noodle soup, braised beef noodle soup, and XLB. The broth for both noodle soups were lacking flavor. After reading so many favorable reviews, I had to find Master Kong and try their Jainbing and handmade dumplings. Located on SE Division & 85th, look for the Orange/Peach colored house. They have completely revamped for Covid with an ordering spot just inside the door that accommodates one person at a time. They have an order sheet, hand sanitizer and clean pens. Also available through Doordash and Grub Hub plus the sign out front says Drive Through but I couldn't find that! The JainBing was quite large and in addition to the scrambled egg and fried wonton skins stuffed inside the crepe, it had lots of chopped cilantro. It was very flavorful and messy to eat! I devoured it right in the car. Next time I will ask them to make mine spicy and to leave the take out box open so the wontons stay crispy giving it the classic mix of textures. The handmade dumplings were stuffed with pork and scallions and they gave a generous portion of 10 along with some dipping sauce. So good, homemade makes all the difference. I drown mine in chili oil so next time I'll request extra. They have a tiny parking area that accommodates 2 cars but there seems to be plenty of street parking. Everything is prepared in their open kitchen, many generations busy chopping, folding dumplings, stir frying noodles - totally authentic. read more

Wow, so good! We grubhubbed it and had the Rougamo, Handmade Dumplings, and the sautéed Snow Pea Leaf (one of our favorites from way back). Everything was GREAT! And, the price was $10 less than we paid for many other takeout orders in the last couple months and we got a lot more! The Rougamo is a wonderful chopped pork (don't think pulled pork, think more like... tuna salad, but way better (pork, duh!)) sandwich in a very chewy pancake of sorts and altogether wonderfully flavorful by itself or dipped in one (or all three at once) of the sauces provided (garlic, chili, soy/vinegar). The handmade dumplings are as good as any I've had (and we LOVE dumplings, does that make us dumpliphiles?). The snow pea leaf, a dish I make with lots of garlic and is a favorite side or main for us... just perfect. We can hardly wait to try the sesame noodles, another fav for us and then some of the more breakfast-y dishes like congee and Chinese donut (I didn't see sweetened soy milk to dip those in on the menu, but we can figure that out, I'm sure!). Wow how did I miss this place? It's easy, it's a tiny hole in the wall on Division. LOL Back in the day, all pot stickers had home made skins and assembled by hand. Today, 75% or more of the potstickers and gyoza sold in Asian restaurants are FROZEN! Yep, the same as the ones you can buy at Uwajimaya in the 5-10 pound bags. :-( Master Kong is the real deal as far as hand made dumplings. Here is how it scored: Jian Bing: I have never eaten one but thought it was pretty tasty. Apparently it came from the Shandong province (Northern China) over 2000 years ago. It's kind of like an Asian breakfast burrito. 4/5 Xiao Long Bao: these were pretty good 4/5 Pot sticker (traditional): these were good but not great. 3.5/5 Chinese style pot sticker: I don't know what part of China this "style" is from but these were pretty awesome. it's open on ends which is unique as well as the upside down presentation. The skin was to die for. 5/5 Hand made dumplings: these were pretty good too. 4/5 Master Kong is a legit dumpling house. They could do more with the fillings but the skins are executed perfectly. Master Kong immediately became one of my favorite places in Portland. First, the jianbing. OH MY GOD. It was amazing! I'm already starting to fantasize about going back there for some more jianbing. I had jianbing for the first time recently on NW 23rd over at the Bing Mi Food Truck, that iirc was internet famous via Munchies or something. Master Kong's was better. It just was. It was so good. And it was cheap. Only $6.50. And pretty sizeable. And the feel of the place was very authentic. I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, but everyone who worked there was Asian and most seemed to not speak much English. The one lady who dealt with customers presumably spoke the best English, and she did not speak very good English at all. But feels to me like it signals authenticity. Same with the decor. They weren't trying to impress anyone. Which is perfect. Oh, and as I was sitting and eating my meal, there was this old lady who worked there right next to me -- like two feet away maybe -- and she was forming dumplings. She had pork in one of those metal culinary bowls. She had the dough. She would roll the pork into little balls, flatten out the dough, but the ball in the center of the dough, and then tie it up. All of this together is just my favorite thing in the world. Great food. Authentic. Good price. No pretentiousness or angling to prove something. Just honest work from people who are very good at what they do, making a living. Kudos to them. Master Kong has a Chinese old-fashioned, quick eats vibe to it that begs a Chinese food lover like me to come in. The venue is austere and clean. The wall have placards of the dishes spelled out. The workers are friendly if not blunt, and they are very proud of their handmade dough, potstickers, buns, etc. The lady I spoke with came from Guandong. We got the beef brisket noodle soup, Goubulai pork steamed buns, potstickers, and fried dough. The noodle soup was warm and the ingredients tasty but the broth could have had a bit more natural flavor, it felt light. The potstickers and steamed buns were delicious especially with their dipping vinegar/soy sauce. The fried dough was perfect and brought me back to my childhood. I savored every bite. The gripe? The value. While it wasn't very expensive, it wasn't the one dollar sign "$" that Yelp promised either. Two people ended up eating all of the above and still left a little unsatisfied.
