Unlike when it first opened, there was no snaking long line at Matcha Ren on Friday afternoon. I finally got to try the mont blanc soft serve and it did not disappoint! I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed by the texture of the mont blanc and the hollowness of the soft serve cup. I also wish they weren't out of the black sesame soft serve again. The soft serve was very creamy, which I liked but the matcha flavor was fairly weak. Especially for it being a matcha place. FOOD/DRINKS : Strawberry Wrapped Mochi and Mango Wrapped Mochi - came with a string to cut the mochi in half to see the fruit cross section. This part was super cute and fun! However, I felt like the fruit wasn't the sweet juicy contrast to the matcha mochi like I had imagined in my head. The strawberry was small and not super sweet, and the mango was more of a paste rather than a full piece of cut fruit. The matcha mochi didn't have a strong matcha flavor, and it was pretty thin compared to the thick layer of bean filling that kind of overwhelmed everything else. I felt like there could've been less bean filling to bring out the taste of the fruit/matcha more. It got super thick and one-note at the end :( I really wanted to like this! I was imaging more of a sweet, juicy fruit in the center with a distinctly strong matcha mochi outside layer. I got the matcha monte blanc because I was duped by someone's Instagram to drive 30 minutes to try it, not realizing it's a tiny cup and the "mochi" on top isn't chewy, it's actually mushy. Overall, not good at all. We ordered a soft serve and the Mont Blanc soft serve pictured here. The noodle like Mont Blanc is actually a chestnut puree, much like a chestnut cake. That itself actually isn't that special even though it's green... leading most people to think it would taste like matcha but it doesn't. The low rating actually comes from the soft serve it self, which is probably the most important item on their menu because it goes into many of the menu selections. I tried very very hard to pick out any matcha flavor It's seriously lacking in. It probably is the most blend matcha ice cream I've ever tasted including the store bought stuff. In fact it's so blend that you really need the Mont Blanc to add flavor to it to make it taste somewhat ok. The worst part about it though... is the smoothness. It is so smooth, so creamy, and yet so flavorless, it made me feel like I'm tasting frozen lotion. Yes you heard that right, frozen lotion. We all love matcha and my little one especially likes matcha soft serve, but she stopped eating after 2 bites. We took a few more bites and definitely regret the purchase (not to mention the semi outrageous price...) and tossed them. We ordered: - Matcha Mont Blanc Parfait (~$14) which had a lot of toppings such as corn flakes (cereal), mochi, jello, a wafer, and some extra add ons that I'm not too sure of. Flavors were very interesting but I wouldn't get it again. - Matcha Soft Serve Shake (~$8) I didn't really like the taste of the shake. I couldn't really taste that matcha flavor and it honestly tasted more like cream cheese + a tiny hint of matcha for some reason. - Mango Mochi & "Orange" Mochi ($~4-6) honestly this might be one of the worst fruit mochi I've tasted. It was very disproportionate (you can look at my photos) and both of it had no flavors at all. Very bland. I do give props to them being creative and letting us cut it ourselves with a string, but flavor wise I don't think I would ever get it again. Other than that, I got the matcha mont blanc ice cream and matcha mango mochi really fast! The mont blanc on top was super good, very nutty in flavor. The ice cream was also creamy and not so sweet, which is a perfect balance with the mont blanc. Mochi-Ya Ren, how are you SO good?? I'm so glad I've been fortunate enough to find you on my recent visits to Cali. Now if I'm ever in the area, I will have to come back and stop in and have this uniquely delish dessert because there is just nothing like it! There is ample seating available, you just head up to the stand and order either on the iPad or the people working can help if you have a special order or any questions. So I'm pretty new to the Montblanc game, I like to call it sweet spaghetti because it's noodle-y texture is unlike anything else I can think of other than, you guessed it...sghetti'. What's so unique is you can either get it in Matcha or Black Sesame flavor and it has a mochi like texture so though it is noodle-like, it is super soft and quite pretty. On this recent visit I went with a parfait and you can either choose Hokkaido (think vanilla like flavor special from Japan) Matcha, or swirl with the two, or if you opt for a parfait with black sesame, you get Hokkaido soft serve. So I got one of each, and since I was ordering for a friend I picked her up a strawberry mochi. They have different soft serve sundaes, soft serve shakes, mochi ice creams, or pints available. It can get quite busy, though this time I came at a good time and my order was ready within just a few minutes. I really enjoy montblanc, it really is such a unique texture, and it's just the right amount of sweetness. I've really been on a matcha kick lately, so this dessert really hit the spot. I came here to try their viral mochi and matcha softserve and it was underwhelming to say the least. The mochi on top kind of has the texture of red bean paste but without the flavor. The matcha softserve wasn't super sweet which I liked. I wouldn't say the matcha flavor was super strong but it had a nice balance between sweet and that earthy matcha flavor. It does look cool seeing them add the mochi on top but that's really it. In addition to the softserve, I also got what I thought was going to be mango wrapped in mochi and a strawberry wrapped in mochi. Again, the matcha flavor was almost nonexistent so it just tasted like normal mochi. The strawberry one was good but it was a lot smaller than expected. The mango one however, was the most disappointing. It wasn't the actual fruit like how it's advertised but a paste(?). It looked like they just mushed a bunch of mango together and gave you maybe a tbsp of it wrapped in mochi. The service was alright.
