Originally my party and I went as they sent us a coupon to redeem. However, upon trying to type it in, it didn't work. And in asking a staff member, he explained that they've been trying to tell the company to stop sending out discounts as the store doesn't accept any. So that was a little disappointing. We just order a regular matcha ice cream and we felt that it was a little stronger in matcha in the past - not sure if recipe changed.
Soft Noodles on top was a bit too sweet but I did like the matcha soft serve very creamy & intense matcha taste. Service was quick especially on a weekend it was packed on this food court. Be sure to keep an eye out on the table where they put the orders that are done, they come out fast.
I got the mochi ice cream and while the mochi was delicious, the quality of the matcha ice cream inside was pretty average. I did also get a strawberry matcha daifuku, which was enjoyable! The worker was very friendly. The place itself is in the Mitsuwa food court, so it's quite busy (depending on the time). I would need to come back to try more of the menu, which I am happy to do in the future.
This is a dessert spot in Mitsuwa with various dessert options. I tried the hojicha soft serve and it was just ok. The hojicha flavor wasn't very strong which I was a bit disappointed about. The hokkaido soft serve also wasn't as creamy as I anticipated -- it had an icy feel more than a milky feel.
I love matcha soft serves and was excited that this was near where I was hanging out. However, the soft serve was disappointing as it did not have too strong of a matcha taste and the soft serve texture was not what I normally expect. It was about $7 or so for the soft serve. I came at the tail end of the night so maybe that was a factor. Don't think I would be coming back though.
We came to Matcha Ren after having dinner nearby in Costa Mesa. Matcha Ren is located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace's food court. I was skeptical to try it at first since the rating was not high, definitely trust the reviews. As a matcha connoisseur, I thought that Matcha Ren fell short of my expectations. -- Matcha Mont Blanc Soft Serve [3/5]: The matcha taste was not strong enough and too milky for our liking. We shared the matcha mont blanc soft serve, but we ended up not finishing it. Having tried many other matcha soft serve places, Matcha Ren was not worth the price.
This spot has the best matcha and mochi I've had since Japan -- no exaggeration. The mochi is unbelievably soft, light, and just melts perfectly with every bite. And the matcha!!! So good. It's rich, earthy, and actually tastes authentic, the kind that immediately transports you back to a quiet café in Kyoto. Their mochi ice cream is a must, their matcha green tea is flawless, and the Mont Blanc ice cream is straight-up dreamy. Honestly, everything I've tried from here has been top-notch, delicious, amazing, and just superb all around. If you're craving a little taste of Japan, this is the place to go. Highly recommend!
I really wanted to like Matcha Ren (located near the entrance of Mitsuwa Marketplace's food court), but the experience was disappointing overall -- especially given the high prices. I should had "consulted" with recent Yelp reviews so I could lower my expectations. :((( First off, the ordering process felt impersonal. There were staff available (not busy with other orders), yet I still had to use a self-serve kiosk since I had a question if there's a cone upgrade. When there's no crowd why not just take the order directly? I ordered the Hokkaido milk sesame soft serve, and it fell short. It wasn't creamy at all, and they were very stingy with the black sesame topping (see photo). The sesame was more of artificial dip-coating NOT grounded paste. The coating only covers the top with nothing at the bottom so the remaining portion was literally vanilla. For $7, the portion was small and definitely not worth the price. The one saving grace was the friendly server who handed me the drink -- they were kind and polite. But unfortunately, good service alone couldn't make up for the underwhelming soft serve and overpriced for small portions. I very rarely regret trying desserts so this is the first. Probably not worth coming back.
Located inside the mitsuwa market, Matcha Ren is poppin!! I went for the sole reason of trying out the very instagram worthy matcha noodles which are actually made out of red beans! Soft serve was amazing too, with full matcha flavor. Even my not-so-matcha-fan bf was turned into a matcha fiend after trying this! Definitely recommend.
Matcha Ren is not bad. They are convenient for some fast dessert when you're at Mitsuwa, but I wish Mitsuwa had better dessert options. They are fast, overpriced, and quality is not really worth the price in my opinion. We tried a chocolate filled mochi with strawberry and Hokkaido milk soft serve. The Hokkaido milk soft serve was rich and creamy, but not worth the price. The mochi was okay. Overall, I'd come back only for convenience if I wanted dessert after having a meal at the delicious food court.

You really gotta love Asian establishments on US Federal Holidays, because you just know they're open regardless. I came here on a recommendation during a holiday weekend and am proud to say I survived the warzone that is the Mitsuwa Marketplace parking lot/structure. No amount of road rage and car cutting was going to discourage me from getting that famous Matcha Mont Blanc. The interior of the marketplace was just as busy as the parking structure, and the line extended around the corner of the food court, which I expected from the reviews. After getting my order a few minutes after ordering, I was decently surprised. I expected something mind blowing from a busy establishment like this, but instead of getting a nuclear explosion, I felt light fireworks. Sure, it's not as explosive, but it was still impressive. I think the actual appearance of the dessert itself made me expect more from it. The Mont Blanc had a thick layer on the top, while the bottom layer had the consistency of ice cream. It was matcha through and through. The presentation of the dessert itself was great! It really did look like green Ramen was placed on top of my ice cream, which was what makes it such a crowd favorite. Looking forward to coming back for the crepes! read more

I'm just a little bit disappointed... I was so excited about this place opening up because it's the first one in Southern California. Luckily we went on a day that wasn't busy so we ordered and got our treats right away. The cashier was very patient with us and recommended his favorite item- strawberry matcha. Things were going smoothly, until we got our order. I probably just ordered the wrong things because I didn't really like the items we got. Strawberry Matcha Mochi $4.80- The best part about this was that strawberry inside is nice and fresh. Matcha Mont Blanc Softserve $9.20- The matcha paste on top had a similar texture to red bean (not a huge fan of it) and it didn't taste well with the matcha ice cream. Matcha Strawberry Softserve $7.10- This was okay, nothing special. The parking is shared with the other businesses inside the building and there is plenty of indoor seating. read more
This place is located in the middle of the mitsuwa food court area. It is bustling and you can smell ramen and fried katsu coming from the other stalls. I came here after seeing how pretty their soft serve is. While the soft serve looks gorgeous, the quality and taste of the dessert isn't there. Note the topping is called Mont Blanc and is not matcha ice cream. It is a bean puree and quite sweet. The soft serve itself doesn't live up to the price they charge. $10 for a cup. The soft serve lacks matcha flavor and is very aerated. Because it's so aerated it lacks flavor and isn't cold how you would expect soft serve to be. The dessert items they have are very presentable, and I can't speak for their other menu items, but if you want to come solely for the soft serve, it's not worth it! Lack luster soft serve and too expensive. The service was friendly and fast, but if you're around, there are a lot of other tasty options in the food court. read more

Sooo I caved & had to get on the Matcha Ren hype !!! Located in Costa Mesa's Mitsuwa, the matcha here was worth the drive and long line. As a matcha lover, this satisfied my daily appetite and visual craving. My friends and I shared the matcha mochi ice cream, matcha latte, and matcha mont blanc soft-serve. The crowd favorite was the matcha mont blanc soft serve because of the noodle-like matcha topping. If you like red or white bean filling in mochi, you have to get this matcha! The texture is super pillowy and melts in your mouth. It wasn't too sweet and all the matcha desserts we tried had a lingering umami taste that was slightly bitter. In all honesty, however, I think it was a taste I got tired of quickly even though it was super yummy :'( I think a good middle ground option was the cup of matcha ice cream which was a tasteful portion. Overall, I still recommend all matcha fiends to still try it for the sake of its unique presentation and delicious matcha !! ~ read more

Tried the mango mochi which was around $5. Fast ordering. The mochi was soft. I found the bean paste too sweet for my liking, but the mango was a slightly tart chunk that matched it. Not really any matcha flavor (the bean paste would've been good with matcha mixed in) Overall okay! read more

Matcha Ren was super disappointing. Luckily I went after the lunch rush on a weekday so there were only a couple of people in line in front of me. If I had to wait in that insane line on the weekend, I would have been totally bitter. I had been eager to try the matcha Mont Blanc soft serve, intrigued by the chestnut strand topping. Not only was it expensive ($9.20), but neither the topping nor the soft serve had much flavor. My daughter got the matcha mochi crepe with banana, chocolate, whipped cream and ice cream ($10.90). Once she ate the ice cream, there wasn't much filling in the crepe. If you're still curious, try going during the week when parking and the line isn't as crazy. read more

Dear Matcha Ren, Matcha ren I will never go again, Parking is already a hazard here every day. Now matcha for beginners. Sesame is very good, the mont blanc is warm and falls like a building losing its foundation. What a miserable world. People working there are rushing and waiting to leave and also in back cleaning but use same gloves to trash and put out new items disgusting. Well what a delightful experience. The place is open but wow never thought it would be a thrill to see how dirty they work or inexperienced they are with monc blanc too. Money waste, time waste, I guess this is new matcha life. What do you get when you mix Japanese green tea soft serve and French chestnut purée? Matcha Mont Blanc! This dessert has been around for quite a while now, but it exploded in popularity recently after going viral on social media. REN Matcha&Mochi (Mochi-Ya Ren) is a new stall at the newly-remodeled food court inside Mitsuwa. Parking was terrible when I visited on a Saturday afternoon, with a few spaces taken due to construction. Luckily I found a spot in the underground garage, but it was quite a wait idling there until another car left. Seating in the general area is pretty plentiful, with a mix of standard tables and high counter chairs. Line was long but moved steadily. The kitchen enclosure is all glass, so you can watch them whisk the matcha and freshly prepare the desserts. On the menu they have soft serve (Hokkaido Milk or matcha), mochi ice cream, ice cream pints to take home, soft serve shakes, their signature Mont Blanc, and mochi crepes made with rice flour. I came here before they added the ordering tablet, but I got a receipt and they called out my number when it was ready. It's a pricey dessert, but you just need to buy one because it's enough to share. Soft serve on the bottom had a creamy consistency, but it was light on the matcha flavor. The tea-infused chestnut topping is thinly piped and resembles vermicelli. I enjoyed it more, the purée added a pleasant amount of earthness to balance the overall sweetness. Not somewhere I'll go out of my way for, but I'd consider stopping by after dinner if I'm back at the food court again. read more

FOOD: Strawberry Fruit Mochi [9.5/10] The strawberry was very juicy and the mochi was so soft and chewy! They make the mochi fresh and you can really taste the freshness! The mochi had a slight sweetness to it and was perfecttt sweetness SERVICE: [7/10] Since they're new, I'm sure they are just getting the hang of things. I did have to wait about 10-15 minutes for my one mochi. AMBIANCE: Located inside of Mitsuwa Marketplace food court, surrounded by lots of other restaurants! There are lots of tables and seating inside. Parking: there's a good amount of parking for Mitsuwa, never had issues with finding parking here. read more
Got the matcha parfait and asked for light on the whipped cream! Super rich matcha-y flavor (not sweet) so if you're not a fan of matcha, you might not like it. Loved the mont blanc on top. I wish there was a little bit more ice cream. There's also strawberry bits and syrup in the middle with cornflakes and then at the end whip cream again with matcha pudding. The matcha pudding was a little too overwhelming for me at the end. The downside is the food court in general. Mitsuwa is always packed and trying to get a table feels like you're fighting for your life. read more
Matcha Mont Blanc soft serve - Matcha is definitely high quality - there is a subtle bitter/matcha grassy aftertaste. However, this is not my favorite matcha dessert, it was too creamy/fattening and I felt I was eating softened butter the entire time. Never had Mont Blanc before but it tasted like a mix of mung/red bean paste and frosting. Soft serve itself is not that sweet (just too creamy), much of the sweetness comes from the Mont Blanc. Overall, I prefer a more balanced soft serve (creamy and icy) and wouldn't get it again. Matcha mochi covered fruits - ordered the strawberry and orange. Would recommend you eat or refrigerate right away for best quality. Honestly, pretty mid: the mochi was so grainy with strong grassy aftertaste, the fruits tasted like regular fruits. I thought there would be cream inside but it's just fruits wrapped in mochi. Visited at 3PM on Friday and waited ~40 minutes to order - line was stretched out to the entrance door. Didn't have to wait long for the food though - probably 3 minutes. Lots of seatings available - they added new ones in addition to the ones in the food court. Service was super friendly, just the food was not up to expectations. read more

The Matcha Crepes here are MASSIVE! I tried the strawberry and ice cream matcha crepe today. It comes with a large scoop of ice cream on top, whipped cream and strawberries with chocolate syrup all over! I loved the texture of the crepe and all the toppings. I wished the matcha flavor was a *bit* more present but otherwise I really liked this dish!! read more
Was having dinner with a friend in the Mitsuwa food court and saw a long line for this place so the curious side got the best of me. After waiting in a Disneyland ride like line, finally got to try the #7 crepe and got a matcha mochi donut for to go. The crepe was so yummy, but the mochi balls and whip cream I could have done without. The crepe shell had a stronger matcha flavor - which I loved and went well with the strawberries and ice cream. And the mochi donut I had the next day and it was nice and chewy. It wasn't too sweet which I really liked. All in all I would probably modify my crepe order next time, but will be back. read more
Checking out Costa Mesa's newest matcha spot located in the Mitsuwa food court! Be prepared for a long wait, as the line goes to all the way to Daiso. While you wait, you can watch the staff make the mochi fresh on the spot and work the mont blanc machine. They have all sorts of matcha desserts, including crepes, soft serve, mochi, and drinks. We ordered the matcha mont blanc soft serve in a cup, the matcha black sesame swirl, and the matcha strawberry mochi. The matcha mont blanc soft serve was alright; for its price ($9.20) I don't think I would get again. The matcha black sesame swirl was creamy with distinct notes of black sesame and matcha. The matcha strawberry mochi came with string and instructions on how to cut it - entertaining and pretty tasty. Overall, pricey but worth a try. I would probably wait for the lines to die down a bit. read more
This has been a long waited opening since there hasn't been any place serving black sesame soft serve besides Somi Somi! It is located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace near the Daiso. As a huge black sesame ice cream fan, I was excited to try it. However, I would say it's okay because the Black Sesame Soft Serve could have a stronger black sesame taste. The workers were constantly working and I think they did a great job for their first day of opening! Parking sucks though so be ready to be searching. Came for a quick dinner at Mitsuwa's food court and found this brand new REN in the middle of the food court. Line was semi long, but the employees were nice and patient. Ordered the Kuromitsu kinako matcha crepe and a matcha Mochi donut. The crepe comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream which is SUPER HARD, and made it difficult to scoop with a spoon. I would suggest for them to offer stronger spoons or make the ice cream a bit softer. The crepe itself was really good, the matcha flavor shines. Donut was also delicious. Solid 4 stars - would love to come back to try the soft serve next time. (Can there be an option to have the soft serve replace the vanilla ice cream scoop in the crepes?!?) read more

I almost did not try this place because of its low Yelp rating, but I decided to try anyways. And I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed their desserts! This shop is located inside of Mitsuwa Market in a hip and modern food court with various other sweet stalls and gachapon. I was enticed by the yummy looking matcha sweets on their menu, especially their Japanese style parfaits, which are hard to find in the US. We received our order relatively quickly. I loved the Matcha Mont Blanc Strawberry Parfait. There were so many different and interesting ingredients, giving the parfait a fun variety of textures from crunchy wafer to squishy mochi. It reminded me of the parfaits I would have in Japan. The matcha is presented both in soft serve and Mont Blanc form, further adding to the whimsical wheelhouse of textures in the plastic cup. The light bitterness of the matcha helps to cut through the sweetness of all the toppings as well. One small note is that I wish they served their parfaits in tall parfait glasses instead of plastic cups. Parfaits should have an air of whimsy and fancy, deserving more than a common plastic cup. The matcha strawberry mochi was pretty good as well, the skin was soft and chewy and the strawberry was sweet and fresh. I literally thought about going back the next day to try the mango version of the parfait. And they have matcha crepes too. I think I'll go back tomorrow. read more

I ordered a mango mont blanc parfait and an orange mochi. The parfait has corn flakes, mochi, coconut jelly, mango, soft serve ice cream and top with the skinny matcha "noodles". The noodles have strong matcha flavored, and I like eating a spoonful of everything in one bite. Since I ate the parfait all by myself, I did not eat the orange mochi til hours later. I did not know the orange mochi has an actual Cuties orange inside! From the display, I thought it was an orange jello or candy. It was interesting to eat an orange with a thin layer of matcha mochi outside. I shared this one with hubby and we kinda felt somewhat healthy because we were eating a fruit. Mochi Ya Ren is a great dessert addition to the Mitsuwa food court, just wish the parking lot was much bigger. read more

Matcha dessert heaven! Honestly I wasn't expecting much based on so many not so great reviews but we decided to give it a try anyways. The wait to order was pretty long. But once we ordered the items came out quickly. Ordered a matcha Mont Blanc and a strawberry mochi. Mont Blanc was pretty yummy--a bit bitter but my 6 year old still enjoyed it. The texture might not have been authentic but I haven't had a real Mont Blanc in years so I don't have much to compare to. The strawberry mochi was really good! I really enjoyed the flavor and texture. read more

I feel like this place is really hyped up. Came here on a Friday afternoon and there was no line. I got the matcha Mont Blanc which was almost $10. The soft serve was creamy with a silky consistency. The portion was enough to share with another person. Service was very friendly. But that was about all the positive things. The matcha soft serve itself didn't have a strong matcha flavor. The stringy top portion added more texture and sweetness to it but it wasn't amazing. read more

I waited about 12 minutes for the strawberry mochi crepe which is not a problem, but after I got it I ate the berries and ice cream then threw the other 3/4 away because there was so much whipped cream inside. The whipped cream was just over-whipped, so it was more like eating grainy, chunky butter that left a thick film in my mouth. I think next time I will just do the ice cream or mont blanc. read more
