Patio lunch on beauty day. The "Mediterranean Tapas" was a harbinger of what to expect later. Olives lacked taste, pita was stale, and hummus was flavorless. This is the kind of fare I'd expect in a rest home...perfectly bland. I wanted to run into the kitchen to borrow a garlic press. I could have done MUCH better with the same ingredients from Shop-Rite. Likewise, the chicken caesar and arugula salad with salmon lacked flavor. Seems like the Chef is afraid of even basic seasonings. The table service was college student diffident. Likewise, the manager was socializing rather than attending to business. The patio was very pleasant but by mid-meal I just wanted to leave ASAP. The Kendall Jackson VR Chardonnay tasted fine, was reasonably priced, and was served at the perfect temperature in clean wine glasses. That's as good as it got. I've eaten here before and had much better experiences, so I won't write them off just yet. On this trip it was a waste of time and money. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Mattar's Bistro for my uncle's birthday party. They have a great party room right in the front that is sectioned off from the dining room but still has a window to see into it. It's intimate for a party but not completely on its own. Our servers were attentive and very quick. We got our food fairly quickly for having a large group. I ordered the Bistro Burger which was perfectly cooked and tasted wonderful. Everyone else seemed to like their food as well. What really stood out to me here was the service. Before I even needed anything it was brought to me, whether that was another drink, a clean plate, or anything else I could need. There were about 20 of us, and there were at least three servers there to accomodate us without being overbearing. I wish more restaurants treated their customers like they did here. read more

I went to Mattar's yesterday for lunch. I was very disappointed with the service. I arrived at 1 o'clock on a Saturday and they had two gentlemen serving a fairly large size crowd. Service was slow. We had to ask for everything. The food was good but no worth the effort of having to ask multiple times for Napkins, Ketchup, bread, and and utensils to box our food to take Home. Although. as we were leaving we noted new servers coming on who immediately greeted guests told them the specials which we were not told and they were given bread. Wow, first time here and it was great. We chose to sit at the bar at one of the high top tables. Nice crowd in the bar, but not too noisy. Our waiter Jeremy greeted us and offered us something from the bar. He suggested a great wine for my husband. Very friendly and had a lot of knowledge of the menu. Since it was our first time in we opted to get 3 different appetizers to try. We ordered corn dog lobster, potato wrapped shrimp and the cauliflower fritters. Everything came out perfectly played with delicious sauces. My favorite was the cauliflower fritters they were served with a buffalo cheese dip. Yum. Service and food was incredible. Priced as expected and tons of options for anyone on the menu. We will definitely be back to this place again and again. read more

I read the menu online first and saw a picture of a potato mushroom soup. I went to Mattar's yesterday, ordered the potato mushroom soup, and when it arrived at my table it looked NOTHING like the picture. The picture had chunks of potato everywhere. What they served was a cream base with nothing in it, and it was tasteless. I asked for some salt. There was no salt nor pepper on the tables outside. They also provided free-of-charge these square chunks of a yellow bread covered in sesame seeds. This bread was STALE AND TASTELESS. I wondered how many times they had reheated it (it was served warm). I only ordered the soup thinking I would wait to see how it was before ordering anything else. I did NOT order anything else. I paid the bill of $6.40 for the soup plus a $2 tip and left extremely disappointed. If u r not sure if a restaurant is going to be good or not, you do NOT have to order everything at once. Order soup or a salad or an appetizer and wait to see if that is any good before ordering anything else. PS I could not sit inside because the entire indoor restaurant stunk of this awful, extremely strong seafood smell. It felt like I was inside a can of Old Bay Seasoning, and I had to eat outside on the terrace where most of the other customers were also. Don't they turn on their exhaust fans in the kitchen? There is no reason for this overwhelming seafood smell in the main dining room. I could not breath in there. TURN ON YOUR EXHAUST FANS IN THE KITCHEN! read more

I really enjoy Mattar's. It is obvious that Mattar runs a pretty tight ship. I will say, one improvement that they could make is to have a better person working the phone for call-in orders. Last time we called in, we were attempting to order something for my wife (g-free) and it was obvious that the girl working the phone had very little idea as to what could be made g-free. Never had a bad meal at Mattar's! The staff is super friendly and helpful, giving recommendations when asked. Tonight I had the filet cooked exactly as ordered (rare) and it was wonderful. The tri-peppercorn sauce was a little overwhelming but the meat was perfect. My fiancé had a half rack of the bourbon bbq ribs and they were great. We split the pecan gateau for dessert and it was amazing! Homemade pecan strusel cake with homemade vanilla ice cream... definitely would recommend! read more

I think this restaurant is very lucky that they don't have too much competition in this neighborhood. There really aren't a lot of restaurant's in the area to choose from. The service has always been fantastic every time I've been here. The bread is fresh but crust is too hard. They should find a new recipe for this if they are indeed making it in-house. Food is good if you frequent the place or if you're a foodie like myself and can suggest substitutions with sides or sauces. I had a summer favorite, but it's not offered in the fall, which is a shame. Desserts are wow for the most part. Their pastry chef is really great. Make sure to ask for the dessert specials and pay close attention. Will definitely go back, but it is a classic american bistro. Nothing WOW, but you do get a few hits once in a while. Have been wanting to give this place a try for a while. Like the outdoor seating, and overall bistro vibe. The food was well done, and not too pretentious. The steamed clams are done a nice broth that is not too overwhelming... I love hush puppies, and their frittata was pretty darn close. A solid wine list, but would have thought it they would have had something skittle more extensive. Overall for lunch a nice place to stop for an eclectic afternoon bistro style lunch. read more

Ive been frequenting Mattar's 8-10 times a year for the past several years...if there is a cause for celebration with friends or family, this is one of my go-to choices...especially since I live in Panther Valley - it's the perfect place!! Food is always great, with wonderful seasonal specials. Servers are always accommodating and pleasant. Mattar's kettle one Dirty Martinis are my favorite. The wine and beer list has something for everyone on it, on top of seasonal cocktails that are always delicious. Mattar himself can always be seen wandering his restaurant, mingling with customers, and keeping things in line. All around, one of the best and most consistent restaurants in the area. read more

This was our first time here. We drive pass this Bistro all the time and say we should go there one day. The day had finally come. I must say our waiter Diego was polite, professional and on point with recommendations and service. The ambiance was low key, clean and not loud. With great weather you can sit outside and enjoy your meal. I will definitely come back with friends and family. Wayyyyyyyy too many people on staff lingering around asking me if I need anything, am I done with that (10 times over), and generally hovering and watching you eat. They're nice enough, but LEAVE ME ALONE! The food is always pretty good. The wine is overpriced, but that's the restaurant business for you. You'll probably spend $150 for a dinner for 4. Love, love, love this restsurant. Newly updated, the food is absolutely great, the service is very good and...they don't rush you so we were the last people to leave! The crab cake appetizer is to die for. I asked that the Veal Milanese be specially prepared and this request was accommodated without fanfare or problems. We had a date night here this past weekend and it was a great first experience! Nice ambiance. We ate in the open dining area, which was great. There was also a beautiful looking patio area (too chilly on the day we went, but would have LOVED to sit out there and eat) and cool bar area with high tops. Service was great. We were greeted immediately and our waitress was very welcoming, knowledgeable, clear, concise, and gave awesome recommendations! Drinks/food were good. Between the two of us we tried the watermelon martini, cauliflower fritters, mattar's bistro burger, special salad w/ hanger steak, and got a piece of chocolate cake to go! All of that was above average and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The only downside were the rolls we got before our food, which seemed like bread on the verge of being stale, but had been warmed up. (disclaimer: we bake bread at home on a regular basis, so we have high bread standards!) We've been here twice now, so I owe them a review. This place is RIGHT on the cusp of being a superior restaurant (particularly given it's remote location), but kitchen and bar response time hold them back. First, the food: everything we had (and the menu is fairly broad) was above average to excellent. The vibe is Mediterranean, but the menu is global (a kind way of saying "all over the place"). They have everything from pub food (pretzel bites with Guinness mustard dip) to sushi to Grilled Prawns with Pineapple Fried Rice, Cabbage and Red Miso. When the kids are with us (and they were for both visits), I'm grateful for this array. In general, though, I keep looking towards the door expecting Gordon Ramsey to come rushing in with his shirt off, screaming about Mattar "not knowing what they are!" Specials were nice touches (oysters with a strawberry mignonette -- my wife is an a-fish-iannato and normally a purist, but loved the mignonette). I was surprised at the excellent smokey flavor and perfect char on the kids' baby back ribs. There are several interesting pasta courses, including gluten free options (for a $2 up charge...don't see this everywhere, but the overall prices are not bad -- most expensive entrée was $30, with most coming in the mid-20s). Everything moved SLOWLY. We arrived late (after a performance at Sitnik Theater at Centenary College) and the dining room was only a quarter full. But it was clearly not the front of house staff's problem -- it was the bar and the kitchen. Kaitlyn was our server and was not only attentive, but entertaining (think a younger, female, better looking Stephen Wright). The kids were highly amused by her, but, having a son of her own, snuck some "parent jokes" in to keep my wife and me entertained as well. She was so charming that we even forgave her for some of the mistakes that normally cost a house a star in a review (e.g., putting extra olives in my drink, when I requested a twist). She was a pro who covered up a lot of sins, including taking 3 hours to serve 4 of us 3 courses on a slow night. We should go back and try a different server, but I'm not that adventurous. Besides, I half expected Kaitlyn to tell us her son was born caesarian section...kind of like leaving a house through a window. read more

WATCH THE PRICES ON YOUR BILL. We've been here many times - usually in the summer for the outdoor terrace and have enjoyed it - that's why we were back again on Saturday evening with two friends. However this meal left a bad taste in our mouths... After 4 appetizers, 4 mains, 3 desserts and 2 bottles of wine, we asked for the check. The bill was presented and we noticed that the wine was 25% more on our bill than stated on the Wine List (which is not inexpensive to start with). We questioned the price and the waiter went to check with "the boss". He quickly returned with the announcement that our bill was correct and that Mattar just hadn't changed the prices on the menu yet! Well, it went down hill from there. They didn't adjust our bill and we'll not return. read more

Just ate an early Sunday dinner with my husband. First time there. Beautiful place. Outdoor seating was gorgeous . Food on the other hand.... Bread, came with no oil or butter. Just 2 pieces of bread on a plate. Ordered the crab cake and steak bruschetta for appetizers. The filler in the crab cake is unknown. Wasn't breadcrumbs though and was terribly bland. Steak bruschetta was so salty, it was difficult to eat. I order the peppercorn filet medium rare and my husband ordered the lamb chops medium rare as well. Sadly, both overcooked to medium well. There was no peppercorn on my filet, either . There also wasn't any mint in the sauce served with the lamb.We told our waitress, she said she would let the owner own. We didn't see her for 30 minutes, so I cut the well done meat up and had it boxed for my 2 dogs. Nothing was said or done. Ordering dessert was something too risky. We got the bill and left. We will never go back. Truly a shame, such a cute place with so much potential. read more

Interesting menu with a lot of options. I had a stuffed squash blossom app with an eggplant tapenade which was ok. The eggplant was a little greasy and the blossom itself was stuffed with mozzerella not ricotta. I prefer when they are ricotta stuffed. I ordered scallop risotto as my main entree and the risotto was a little hard and my scallops were totally underdone. I had to send it back and everything came back piping hot and scallops cooked through. Overall the entree ended up being pretty good, but not awesome. read more

Let me start with, I've worked almost every job in the restaurant business. In this business, although you try to make everyone's dinning experience the best, you will always find some that didn't like it. When competing with people from many different backgrounds, you will always have those with fine taste and those who can't taste...quite literally. As "Nathan G's" review stated, he was reluctant to try Mattars based on the reviews here. However, he went and enjoyed it. This goes to show that you must go any try things for yourself and come to your own conclusion. Regardless of the reviews here, I keep coming back for the reasons I explain below. Quite different from most restaurants where you find the owners sitting at the front door or in the kitchen, the owners at Mattars take personal interest in each customer that walks in the door. They are friendly and professional. They seem to greet their customers either at the door or when you are seated. They are always walking around ensuring that their employees are doing their jobs well and that the customers are happy and feel welcome. We have always been greeted like a friend. Most often you will see them inquiring as to whether or not you are enjoying your dining experience. If you are not, they will make it right. In the many times we have dined here, we have had very few mistakes with our orders. However, we understand that everyone is human and sometime mistakes are made. When we brought the issues to the attention of the Mattars staff, they remained professional and made it right for us. They seem to truly enjoy making their customers happy here. Next to the owners, lets review the rest of the staff. The pastry chef makes the best desserts next to grandmas. They are all delicious! The keylime pie, a personal favorite was prepared with a perfect crust and refreshing keylime filling. The bartenders are friendly, attentive and professional. The bartenders make Mattars a great place to relax after a day at work or out with friends. The catering is just as professional. We have used their catering for several events. The food is fantastic and prepared just as if you were sitting down at a table with personalize service. As far as other events go, Mattars has ladies night on Thursdays and Live Music Friday & Saturday nights. The bands that frequent Mattars know their music too. In my experience, everyone has a great time. When dinning I would recommend the following: Potato Leek Soup, Hanger Steak Salad, if your hungry the Mattars Bistro Burger, Organic Chicken, Cedar Plank Salmon, Goat Cheese Pizza, Shrimp & Crab Cocktail & Fresh Lobster Ravioli. Note they change their deserts around since they are made on-site but if your lucky to be around when the keylime pie is available, try it. read more
