I know the fried chicken is supposedly where it's at, but I was more blown away by the kare kare and other Filipino dishes! So glad to have finally checked out this Filipino chain. My friend and I visited Max's Restaurant for some good ol' Filipino food, which is so hard to come by around the Seattle area. There are slim pickings if you ask me, so Max's was definitely worth checking out. We visited on a Wednesday around noon and there only a few other parties dining inside. Located in a business strip by the Southcenter Mall, it's easy to find with plenty of parking. Goodness, we ordered pretty much everything off of the limited menu, which they are only offering during this time of COVID-19. We both started with a mango juice and lumpia. Both were solid. The lumpia came with a sauce that was kind of like ketchup, which I wasn't a fan of, but I am one of those few people in the world who hate ketchup. The lumpia was good on its own, as it was perfectly crunchy. Then our feast came. We ordered a whole fried chicken with fries for my friend's daughter, a large garlic rice, sinigang baboy, kare kare, lechon kawali sisig and milkfish sisig. It was glorious. Out of everything, I loved the kare kare! It's some of the best I've ever had! You can taste the peanut butter, but only a hint of it. The sauce was amazing, especially with the eggplant and bok choy. The beef with was tender. I also really enjoyed the lechon kawali sisig, which had chunks of lechon. It had some good crispy skin on it with lemon-y flavor. The milkfish sisig was also very good, as it came with a creamy coconut sauce and jalapenos. The sinigang was solid. Sinigang is my favorite Filipino dish and I'm always a little harsh when I eat it from somewhere else that isn't mom's, but it was good here. The pork was tender and really liked the stewed tomato and bok choy with it. My least favorite was the fried chicken. It was juicy and everything, but compared to the other dishes, I thought it was lackluster. And if you're thinking of getting steamed rice with your meal then you need to remember that this is as close to the Philippines as you're gonna get, so you need to update that basic bitch rice with garlic rice! You'll be glad you did. For dessert we had buko pandan with a scoop of ube ice cream, the perfect way to end our Filipino feast. Safety measures are being implemented during this time, with every other table closed off, staff wearing masks and no actual dishes for the customers are being offered. Expect plastic cups, forks and spoons and Styrofoam plates and bowls. The menu is also in paper. Staff were super friendly. Our server, Job helped us and he couldn't have been nicer, making sure to check in with us and even talked with us about the Philippines and helped me practice my very limited Tagalog! I would totally come back here! I was actually surprised by how much I liked it based off of the reviews I read on here. But seriously, if you want some good ol' Filipino food, Max's is legit. Came for Mother's Day and the staff were very nice! The food came out fast considering how busy it was and that we ordered just about everything on the menu. The seating is accommodating of large families, which is a necessity for us Filipinos! The food was hit or miss, adobo is not on the menu, although they were still able to make it. It was a little sweet for our liking, but the Pata and Bangus stole the show! The seasoning and texture were perfect. Had dinner here tonight and we ordered the classics: pancit canton, fried chicken, pinakbet, crispy pata, and sisig served with white rice and sago for drinks. Everything cooked to perfection. Both the chicken and crispy pata were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sisig was also perfect. There was a certain sweetness to the Pinakbet and the veggies were cooked just right. Nothing was soggy. They gave us sample caramel bars- mango and langka (jack fruit) flavored. I liked them so I ordered some to go. Service and ambiance was great. Probably one of the worst experience hands down...it was bad from the beginning. We came in and had to wait at the front to be seated. There was no one at the front, waiters and servers just walked past us not acknowledging that there is customers waiting... We finally got seated after 10 minutes and continue waiting...after a while, I had to go to the front to tell the person we were ready to order. After ordering, was another painful experience of waiting for food. We waited for almost 45 minutes!!!! Finally our food came and was probably one of the worst food we had. My boyfriend family is Filipino and they were so disappointed. The fried chicken which is what this place was known for was super dry and the fries that came with it was cold... The milk fish was on, except mine had a bone in it... The lumpia was pathetically small. The bistek was overdone and chewy and had no flavor. My husband and I have been avid regulars at Max's Tukwila, going there almost every Saturday for 8 months and ordering the same dish every time. It's a great place to have Filipino food that brings both of us home, but despite the good food and the fact that we're regulars, the service is the reason for this low rating. Because despite being regulars and the staff knowing our faces, we are very rarely treated with respect here. We consistently wait 10-15 minutes just to get our order taken, and it's near impossible to flag down waitstaff for the bill or to ask a question. Even when we call them, they ignore us for 5 minutes before coming over or give us an unwelcoming attitude. But we've always maintained a friendly attitude and understanding, knowing that they're consistently busy, and we kept returning because it is still delicious Filipino food. However our last straw was today. We came in at the lunch rush and understandably, they were busy. And being busy is fine, we're usually willing to wait and are understanding, but this location is consistently understaffed. And even if they weren't, we were only a party of 2 in comparison to the larger parties of 5-10. We waited for 20 minutes after sitting down before the waiter came to serve us water, but then after he set down our water he immediately left, not even making so much as eye contact with us. Our waiter left to attend to another table of 5, giving them their waters and took their order first, even though that table arrived after us. By the waiter's attitude -- being blatantly dismissive to us yet shifting to friendlier tones with the party of 5 -- it was clear that the waiter was favoring the other party over me and my husband. This is not the first time this happened to us with this particular waiter. My husband is not Filipino while I'm Fil-Am myself, but my Tagalog is intermediate level. But me and my husband get passed over every time we dine here, and there is a pattern of the waitstaff favoriting customers over us, and in our experience they prioritize Tagalog-speaking patrons over me and my husband. Despite us being regulars, despite always being polite to the servers even after long waits on many occasions, despite us consistently tipping well. This Max location gotta get it together! It was so surprising that there wasn't any wait when we got there during a peak dinner time at 7pm on a weekend. We didn't go near their opening months to make sure they have worked out their kinks like all new restaurants usually have to go through. After dining there several times, I had an idea probably why they weren't busy. They are very Inconsistent with their dishes. They need to be auditing and giving the cook feedback constantly. Their popular signature fried chicken came out differently during each of our different visits. One time too dry, one time too salty, one time was perfect. Even the sinigang such an easy common dish to make also tasted different the times we went. This was true for their dishes except for the lumpia shanghai which remained consistent. Service was also slow and the food takes awhile. The servers were nice but again, everything was just so slow. I saw a lot of tables leaving with still a lot of dirty dishes/plates piled up on the tables. They do have good dishes but again just need to be consistent especially for the price. Recommended items: Crispy pata (though I can make a better side dipping sauce at home. We had Max's Restaurant Food in Vancouver and I could say the food at this place didn't met our expectations thinking they will keep the standard of this franchise. We order the following: Pancit Canton: it was so oily and so salty. For the price, the serving was small and quality don't deserve for someone to pay $16 for the serving. Kare-Kare for $19: this is our basis for most Filipino restaurant, if their Kare-Kare is good you can expect good food quality for the rest but their Kare-Kare was not good at all. The slices of beef is very hard to chew and even slice, you can tell that they didn't boil this meat for tenderness then the sauce supposed to be peanut sauce tasting but it doesn't even have that peanut taste. The veggie is so well done but the meat is not. The side shrimp paste is not homemade, you can tell it's a poor quality. They could have invest to have like the Barrio Fiesta Paste for this Kare-Kare. Unfortunately If you love Kare-Kare, we can't recommend from this place. Crispy Pata for $27: once again disappointed. As a restaurant they should have the understanding that most Filipino-American will come to eat this because you can't have this everyday or have it at home so expected people will order this. My husband was craving filipino food and he had mentioned that Max of Manila was newly opened. We are not new to this food chain, we went for almost every occasion when we were living in Hawaii. I was excited, I wanted to get some Bicol Express and Mais con Queso. We got there, it was pretty busy, but not crazy. It looked like a typical restaurant on a sunday night. We were seated after about 20 minutes of waiting. I was disappointed as there was no Bicol Express nor Mais Con Queso in the menu. The menu looked small, and we figured it was because they had just opened. Anyway, we ordered water, Crispy Pata, lumpia shanghai, rice, palabok, and crispy sisig. 20-30 minutes later, our food starts coming out one by one. Still no water. The waiter gave us our crispy pata and still no water. And he mentioned that was the last of our order, I mentioned to my husband that the sisig was not out. And he so he waited. He asked the waiter for water again. Some lady, maybe the manager gave us our water. 10-15 minutes later, still no sisig. My husband asked the manager earlier who gave us the water and she said she would check on it for us. So we waited a little longer, and then we figured it wasn't coming. I was super thirsty, and drank all my water. Not ince did anyone refill it nor check on us to see how we were doing. And our waitress was taking orders right next to us ... anyway, we waved someone down, asked for more water and mentioned the sisig. 15 minutes later. No water. No sisig. She pushed for us to take it to go. i said no, we wanted to eat it here and I am not taking it home, she then argued that it already got charged, and I said well, you will have to void it out. She said ok, and we asked for water AGAIN. She came back, like 15-20 minutes later and told us that it was voided. And gave us our to go boxes for our leftovers. Still, no water. So I wanted to try this place weeks ago, but my friends told me I would be really disappointed. But I wanted to see for myself, so yesterday afternoon around 330pm, I decided to call to see if I can make a to go order. Gal on the phone stated that I can only order in person, and I can only order a whole chicken. I thought okay that's fine. Which was okay as well, so my daughter, and I went to the mall, picked up Cinnabon, then went back to Max's, and since Bai Tong a few doors down wasn't busy at all I decided to order some veggies to go with our Max's chicken. So when I got home to feed the family, there was this over cooked chicken and 8 pieces of French fries. Was this a joke? Nothing was juicy about this chicken at all, and in order to even get it down we had to use the packets of banana sauce they gave us. The garlic rice was just as dry. Actually, I'm thinking of just dining at the Filipino restaurant near my home(Fil Cuisine) next time. I really wanted to support Filipino restaurants around Seattle/Tacoma area, but it's so disappointing! Since it's still pretty new in the area, to dine in the wait is about an hour. Checked the bag, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" really? Kare kare in a Large Chinese container three fourths full? I asked the lady, she says they put it on the bowl and then to the To Go container. Unacceptable and disappointed to say the absolute least. I love supporting filipino restaurants. I want them to succeed and thrive, being filipino myself. But I've had pretty dismal customer service in past visits, but the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, was our most recent experience during mother's day. We had set an online order for Mother's day brunch a week prior-- paid and tipped online with the expectation of picking up our food to go. We arrived right on time, as did several other people. 10 minutes go by, then 30 minutes, then 45 minutes, then an hour, then an hour and 15 minutes. We left the restaurant over 1 hour and 30 minutes of waiting. That is disappointing in itself, but we had company at home waiting for food and hungry. A few things: it seems as though maybe their system lost our order and although we already pre-paid, our order seemed to go in the order in which people arriving to place their order had done. Suggestion: this should be expedited since this is a fault of yours. Anyways, it seems there is a lack of staff and they were overwhelmed with the amount of business they are having. It's not bad practice to limit pre-orders so you dont' run into this. I realize that they want as much business as they can get, during these hard times. But now my loud mouth is telling everyone about my experience here. Either stay clear or triple/quadruple check if they have your order prior to coming. It's inacceptable. read more

Ordered 4 dishes and the only one we enjoyed was the crispy pata. Pinakbet was awfully sweet, not much flavor for the pancit, and the adobo was ok. Make sure you ring the bell when you pick up your order because everyone will stay in the kitchen until they hear the bell. My review in a nutshell: Max's Restaurant is better in the Philippines. I went here with my family of 10. Customer service isn't bad here. We didn't have to wait TOO long. We ordered a bunch of things: fried chicken, crispy pata, lechon kawali, bangus na sisig, pancit canton, and kare kare. Oh, and halo halo for dessert. The best thing we got was the halo halo to be honest. The fried chicken was dry. The best thing about it was the crispy skin. My guess is that they use frozen chicken, but it's not like this is the Philippines where they can just slaughter chickens they're raising... so understandable. The lechon kawali was good, but the sauce was a little too salty for my taste, and the lechon itself wasn't as crispy. The crispy pata, on the other hand, WAS crispy. However, for some reason, it looked stale... like it was reheated too many times if you know what I mean. The pancit canton tastes like it came out of a frozen noodle package, but it is what it is. Now the bangus na sisig and kare kare........ my mom makes way better ones that this! They need to grill their bangus on a legit grill outside. My mom does this, and it tastes fresher this way. They also need more seasoning on it, more salt and pepper and calamansi. Maybe even throw in some jalapeños for an extra kick. The most disappointing thing we ate was their kare kare. I LOVE kare kare, and to eat their "oxtail soup" was a disgrace. It tasted like someone poured a whole box of starch in it to thicken the soup. It was bland! It tasted like flour/starch! Where was the beef stock taste with the peanut butter flavor?! I had to smother the karekare with bagoong just because I wanted vegetables yet the "soup" just didn't cut it. The halo halo... saved this place for me. Beautiful presentation and included every bit of taste and texture you need in that dessert. Sad, we skipped by a couple of times as the lines have been long. I was hoping for an amazing experience. We had a whole chicken, peanut beef stew and rice. The the chicken skin was fair, but the meat wasn't dry and bland. Same with the beef stew, very bland with no flavor depth. The beef was tender but minimal amount in the entree, and vegetables were sparse. The rice wasn't cooked very well. Decent service, but wouldn't go back for the food. [Note: Review based on the day of the Soft Opening ; will update after future visits] For a hidden corner in the Southcenter Parkway Plaza, this place is a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside! Filipinos will definitely feel a very familiar vibe just as they walk in, and anyone else I'm sure will feel just as welcome as they step inside. Overall, the service - and especially the food - were really great! The anticipation of the first opening day meant there were more employees than normal, smiling and greeting every customer who came in, along with managers checking up on each table every so often. Our server - Rochelle - was very hospitable and friendly and was there to assist us whenever we needed anything (more spoons, more water, etc...) I especially liked this other employee - by the name of Job - who came by to serve our food while making small talk and while sharing his excitement for the store's opening. As for the food - Vegetables in the Sinigang na Baboy were a bit too crunchy and the soup a little bland for my taste, but that was my only complaint. The Lechon Kawali Sisig tasted as great as it looked, the signature fried chicken (a must-have!) was juicy with crispy flavorful skin. The Halo-Halo and Buko Pandan were both very delicious (the latter being the best my brother had ever tasted). Each food dish was presented beautifully (especially the Halo-Halo!) This was only the soft opening, so the menu doesn't have as many food options as other Max's locations for now. Within a few months - according to the manager - they'll have a Grand Opening with 10 or so more items on the menu. UPDATE: Mmm, Max's still needs a couple things to improve on. Came back for another visit, but service seemed off. Decided to come around opening time. Long line of people! Took about 35 minutes to get a table for two. When we ordered, our server seemed to just stand there to take our order. Kinda was some awkward silence before I decided to say something about being ready to order. Weird to see other people that were seated after us get water. We got our first dish, the lumpiang shanghai before the water. Had to ask the server for water. I also had to ask for my mango juice at the end of the meal. Admittedly, it looked diluted when I got it and it really did taste watered down. I do really want to support Filipino food in Seattle, but this establishment still needs to work its kinks... I'm sorry but I hope to up my ratings when they improve. ---------- Mabuhay, Max's! Honestly glad to have this restaurant here in Seattle. It's so hard to find good Filipino food, especially with some Filipino businesses closing down... but thank goodness for Max's! Let's bring Pinoy foods back! I understand that they're working some kinks out as they are in their soft opening phase. It was a bit of a wait, as it was an hour to get seated for two people, and an hour to get our food. Note this was on a weekend. So, we got the garlic rice, pinakbet, pancit palabok, half chicken, lechon kawali sisig, and crispy pata. Ended the meal with halo-halo and leche flan! Garlic Rice: good ol' garlic rice. Perfect vehicle to accompany all of your "ulam" Pinakbet: pretty solid, tastes similar to what I've had in the past. Pancit Palabok: while the sauce is tasty, I think I might end up liking Jollibee's palabok a little more. Crispy Pata: Crispy. Delicious. Just the way it should be lol. Half Chicken: better than I remember! I love the flavor and juiciness of the chicken. Not heavily breaded, so you rely on how well it was seasoned and cooked. Lechon Kawali: my favorite dish. You combine two wonderful Filipino dishes and put them into one: mindblown. Halo-halo and leche flan were both decent ways to end the meal, but I don't think dessert is their strong point. tl;dr: Get the chicken, sisig, garlic rice and you're golden. I wanted to support a Filipino business being Filipino myself but I was definitely disappointed!!! For the amount of food they served you, it definitely was over priced! I ordered the adobo which was $13 and when I got it they literally gave me 5 pieces of pork! With barely the sauce! It literally looked like it was just left overs! And adobo does not even consist of expensive ingredients! Also the half fried chicken was really dry and not actual authentic Filipino seasoned fried chicken. The last Time I went to Max on this side of the world was in Vancouver, BC. Once you know what Sisig tastes like, the mind will look for it over and over. Once you taste it, you will not wonder why one would drive 3 and half hours north, just to get a taste of home. Like a fat laden tattoo sizzling in my mind. It retells the story of long nights and too many beers. Though nights like those come few these days, the dish still burns in my mind. It has been a few weeks since Max's opened their doors in the city of Tukwila. I am grateful that it came so much closer to us. We were excited to try it but didn't want to deal with the lines. Today we decided to come through. It didn't take long before we ordered the Sizzling Lechon Kawali Sisig and Garlic rice. We also added some creamy Laing to our order. We didn't stop there. We got a half order of fried chicken. To dip the chicken in, we made a mix of Banana Ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce and Tabasco sauce. Everything was great but the sisig definitely stood out for me. We also had two drinks (para pang panulak), mango juice and Sago't Gulaman. Service was really friendly and treated us well. read more

Online ordered a week in advance for 12:30PM since i had my Mother coming over at 1:00PM. Many people in line waiting for online orders. Had to put my name on a list AGAIN where I assume they didnt start cooking until they went down the list again since I kept track of the people and what time they said they set their pickup time at, and the people who happened to be closer got their food first. A lady got their 1:00PM food at 1:15PM when they yelled at a server, while me and plenty other people were still waiting for our 12:30PM food. Me, trying to be understanding of the business, just waited for our turn but the people who were more vocal about their frustration got their food first, which sets a bad precedence. If i knew I'd get my food faster if I yelled at one of the servers, maybe I would have, but I tried to stay respectful. My suggestion is if you have online orders, you should actually cook those prior to the customer arriving and not waiting until the customer is in store and having to actually request in person. It makes me wonder what the purpose is for online ordering if you have to order in store again. I finally got my food at 2:30PM. TL;DR - I online ordered a week in advance for 12:30PM pickup. Did not receive order until after I talked to a server and put my name on a list for my order to be cooked. Received food at 2:30PM. I should have realized this would happen because it is normal for this restaurant to have service like this. If you're planning on coming to this restaurant on a holiday (or any day for that matter) expect to wait all day and fully charge your phone and download some Netflix movies. read more

A couple things. When we went it wasn't at all busy. We were the only ones in the place. It was freezing inside. So be prepared for that. We had the sweet potato fries, the pork belly, the pancit, the lumpia, the fried chicken and the garlic rice. The portions are huge. The fries have sugar on them which is good but different. Everything was good but nothing was fantastic. The dark pieces of chicken were good but the white meat was incredibly dry. Inedible dry. We came here in Saturday at 530pm and waited about 30 minutes. We ordered half a chicken, pancit bihon (glass noodles), garlic rice, and a buko pandan (dessert). The chicken was really great. A tiny bit dry, but full of flavor and crunch. Would definitely order again. Pancit bihon was great, but we were told it contained shrimp and fish balls, when it really contained shrimp, chicken, and pork. I don't eat pork, but I also don't return items with meat in them since it's wasteful. My partner ate the pork. The dish tasted amazing and we will get again, but will ask for no pork next time. Garlic rice was really great, the garlic had a slightly acrid/burnt flavor, but we both loved it. Would definitely buy again. Buko pandan was really yummy. Pandan is a green plant. The green milky stuff is supposed to be liquid, and then they put white coconut ice cream on top. Mix of liquid and frozen. Very yummy, would definitely get again! What a great place ! The menu had lots of selections. The staff were extremely friendly and super polite came in for a family member's birthday they went above and beyond to make our first time experience a memorable one. My favorite thing on the menu was the chop Suey lots of flavor and a very good sized portion all the portions are good sized especially for family style. The fried chicken was absolutely amazing combination of the banana and hot sauce to go with it was just great. I cannot wait to come back with some friends and try some more dishes from the menu and get the great service from the staff that was very kind and said we are welcome anytime.
