I've heard about this place since I moved to Philly, but never got the experience of eating from here. Finally last night I did. I bought a half. Their half was most places whole, but I will say it was $10. The cheesesteak was packed full of meat. It was only the end of the right side that was slightly soggy. The also forgot my pickles, but I had some at home. Those are my only two complaints. It's cash only right now and you have to go up to the window to order. There's also a app called budge the line that you can order ahead from. Their bar is currently open for takeout, but you must go inside to order at the bar and show ID. The wait wasn't long. The cheese steaks here are so good I came back the same day for another one. You get a nice sized cheese steak STUFFED with meat and it is flavorful. It's also messy so make sure you get a lot of napkins. A couple of tips: The half is about the size of a foot long, maybe slightly bigger. The whole is twice that size. Either way, worth the money. I thought I reviewed this place some time ago. Haven't been since COVID. So I'm not sure how things go now. But. They have a full bar. With heavy pours of drinks. You can sit at the bar and actually make your food come faster. Why? Because the bartender that you will tip is going to walk your order over to the cheesesteak side and place it for you. The location was right on the corner, and very hard to miss. I walked in and the line was pretty long but the employees were hard at work-- they were friendly, would ask everyone how they wanted their sandwich, and whether you wanted a full or half. Go with the half, the full Philly is huge-- so if that is your choice, better pack a big appetite. I've seen a few reviews who stated the area was sketchy, but that's fine for me. Typically, your best or most authentic meals will come from areas that are deemed "sketchy". Good size steak sandwich. They have a good grill man, he ran a big, busy Grill. We drove 45 minutes before we ate this Cheesesteak. The corropolese roll did not enjoy its time in the wrapper. I still like a corropolese roll. Dan is not a fan. I got green peppers on the cheesesteak because the meat looked dry. I grew up with Max's but in the past couple of decades that I've bounced back and forth between here and Wilmington I've only been once or twice. I'm decidedly more of a Clock Bar fan who combined with the Eagle make up that iconic triangle at Broad and Erie and Germantown Ave. Never in my travels to either the Clock or Eagle have I seen the line for Max's as it was tonight. Blame the movie Creed but in reality I think they were long long overdue for recognition because they have always had just as much clout as those two South Philly joints tv food shows love to talk about except they happen to be in the heart of North Philly. It took my friend and I well over an hour to get our sandwiches. She got a reg cheese steak, I got a chicken cheese steak. Hers was good. Mine was soggy as hell. It was still good but what a mess. I didn't bother with a pic. And here is a tip if you're not aware. You can't eat at Max's but you can bring your food to BOTH the Eagle and the Clock. One thing I did not appreciate on this Saturday night was the Eagle charging a 5.00 cover fee. They know damn well you just stood for over an hour to get your food at their other establishment and now I have to pay to sit?? Stupid awesome phillysteak place! Ordered a "whole" to-go and the lady got to work immediately asking me which meat and toppings and such. I saw her get to work on a 12" hoagie roll. Place had a great vibe with few patrons waiting in line before me to get their food and I saw a big man asking the customer "ketchup?" and then spraying the beegeesus out of the bun with it! So when my turn came, I was like, "just a little bit please." LOL Dude was fun and mad chill and got me sprinkles of oregano and bit of hot sauce upon request. AT THIS POINT - somehow my 12" hoagie had morphed into a 2' long baseball bat of a phillycheesesteak! TWO FEET LONG! Whoa...? Legit came here because Kevin Hart had mentioned this store in one of his stand ups. Since I was in town for the week, I decided that I NEED to come try a Philly cheesesteak in Philly. I took the subway (don't think it's called that) here, and it was surprisingly very close to the subway station. Not going to lie, I felt kind of out of place when I walked in. BUT! The people there were super friendly!! I was kind of confused with how the ordering goes, so I was looking stupid for a good minute. Basically, you let them know what you want to order in front of the line (they will give you a #). After your order is ready, then you walk down the line to pay. Yes, they do serve fountain drinks! You can also sit in the bar literally a door down to enjoy your food. I ordered a whole cheesesteak, not knowing how big it was going to be. When they took out the bread, omg.... it looked like 2 ft long! I believe it was 18$. I gotta say, it was 10/10! They packed it with so much meat, cheese, pickles, ketchup! Before I even took a bite out of this hoagie I was over it. I felt so talked down by the guy making my sandwich that I was two seconds away from saying never mind I'll just starve. I got a chicken sub and it was not great enough to be talked down to. I asked for all my topping options and he said, "it's too late." It was also too late for my patience. It's safe here I think. Let's just say my friend and I were the only non black people here. Heard good things about the cheesesteaks here and it did not disappoint! We got there around 10pm and there was a line. Parking around there might be a bit tough unless you double park like I did. You can customize how you want your cheesesteaks with your order but you can just stick with the original of peppers, onions, cheese whiz, some mayo and let them stack!! Wow, I forgot how good Max's is. My house is closer to other cheesesteak places that are good so when I crave one I usually go elsewhere but a few afternoons ago I had an appointment at Temple and was starving after and remembered Max's was a block away. The roll was fresh and cheese to meat/bread ratio was perfect. The meat was seasoned nicely too. I usually get ketchup and extra Mayo with provolone but I forgot to ask for ketchup. When I got home I took my first bite and realized I didn't even need ketchup: no joke, that's how good it tasted. I honestly want another one right now lol. The bread must be slathered in mayo before it is laid face down on top of the sautéed steak and onions mix. My husband and I split one for a late dinner with buffalo wings and a salad from the hotel grill. We split the 2nd one for breakfast the next morning and it tasted even better. THE CHEESESTEAK: Served Hot, super fresh, loaded, custom made however you like. Gigantic. I'm dying for the provolone cheese, beef, peppers, mayo, lettuce and tomato combo. They come in a half size or small, about 12 inches, and a large size or whole order about 24 inches. My husband and I shared a large. They were able to apply mayo to my half (12") and not to his. I really appreciate that touch. The meat was juicy, perfectly cooked-- tender, not dried up and over fried like a lot of other places do. They use sirloin steak. It's all good. Once you order you can eat there at their bar next door that is connected. We ordered slushy's and water. There is nothing to be afraid of, it is not very sketchy. People are respectful. There weren't any loitering beggars nearby, everyone was there to eat! I would go in the daytime simply just to give the food enough time to digest. Maybe night time is a different story. Was recommended to give these guys a try. I said I wasn't disappointed compared to the first place I went to when I arrived in Philly. Of course the customer service is not the best but you all know if the customer service is trash, the food is gonna be the bomb.com. It is $25 for a whole sub but definitely can get two meals out of it. They do have a bar area in the back so you can go back there and sit and enjoy your food. Lived up to the hype and oddly enough even with the hype from the Creed movie not too crazy as far as a line. We parked nearby on a meter and made our way to Max's. The location itself isn't the best but overall didn't feel unsafe or anything. The staff wasn't as strict as some other where they are specific to order in a specific pattern or go off on you. The options are straight forward and provides a massive sandwich filled to the brim with tasty sirloin steak cheese option and the typical additions of Peppers pickles ketchup or mayo. Really the only downside was catching shift change which should be avoided especially on a Friday about 6. We really enjoyed the jokes from the staff and the general atmosphere was fairly light.
