If I could give this place 10-stars, I would! This is a hidden gem in San Jose. My Honduran friend has been bragging about this place for a the past few months. Finally, I gave in we went for lunch. Will, the server and his wife, were very attentive and made several menu recommendations. Will brought us some chips, salsa and this AMAZING red-bean dip. I thought the black-bean dip from Aqui was delicious. This blew Aqui out of the water!!!!! Holy crap...I wanted to lick the bowl!!!! My buddy ordered the Tilapia plate for me....swearing it would be the best fish ever. So I thought...Tilapia? Are you kidding me. Tilapia, the cheap fish they sell in bulk from Costco? So my plate arrived and I took my first bite of the fish. HOLY MOTHER OF CHEESE!!!! This was the BEST fish, I've EVER eaten. I've had fancy-schmancy places by Thomas Keller and Eric Ripert....however, this was the best cooked fish EVER! After tantalizing my tongue, Will brought me a bowl of warm-homemade tortillas. When I thought things couldn't get better....the tortillas were MIND BLOWING! I ate all the tortillas and asked for a 2nd round. Needless to say, I didn't eat dinner that night or breakfast the next morning. This meal was by far one of the best meals, I've had in San Jose. I dare not to call this place "Mexican" food. I came here for dinner with my best friend super excited to try some Honduran food! The customer service was excellent!!! The waitress made sure we knew what we were ordering and that we would like it. For example, my friend was going to order the Honduran enchiladas, and she explained how they were different from the traditional enchiladas(good thing, because she ended up going with the traditional). I ordered Pupusas with cheese and with checheronies(pork). Upon waiting for your entree they give you complimentary chips and salsa. They salsa was perfect, not too hot, not too mild. Our order took a little bit longer to come out than I had anticipated, that is the only reason they do not have 5 stars. The meal itself was delicious and savory! The pupusas were just right and I had a taste of my friends enchiladas which were also yummy. The green sauce was really really good, you should definitely try it. It's a hole in the wall type of place and they've got posters of Honduran places of interest and soccer memorabilia on the walls. There's lots of order from on the menu - they've got your usual Latin American fare like tacos and such, but being at a Honduran place, I wanted to try Honduran food! I ordered the desayuno tipico hondureño - the Honduran breakfast. It comes with eggs made to order, frijoles/beans, queso freso (cheese), crema (sour cream), avocado, and platanos fritos (fried plantains). It was SUPER DELICIOUS! Everything tasted so yummy. You can get it without meat or get it with meat, which is your choice of carne asada or the chuleta (pork chop). I asked our server which one she preferred and she recommended the carne asada. It also comes with your choice of flour or corn tortillas. I was so stuffed from my breakfast plate. I think it would have been enough food without the meat. But the carne asada had a great flavor to it. The meat was a a tad tough, but still tasted great. We also order the baleada super and a pupusa with frijoles. A baleada I think is like a Honduran tortilla that's a little thicker and slightly more fluffy. It comes folded in half and has fillings inside. With the baleada super, it came with frijoles, avocado, and scrambled eggs! This was also really delicious! Next time I'm going to get my own! The pupusa was tasty and came with salsa and curtido. Not being familiar with Honduran cuisine, I relied on the staff's expertise. They did not disappoint with their suggestions. Excuse my ignorance, since I did not ask the name of the dish. Duh! Since your mouth will be watering after this review, just point to the pictures and they'll make it happen. Started with jumbo prawns stuffed with jalapeños, wrapped in bacon. Yes, you read that right. MIND. BLOWN. My husband and I arm wrestled for the last bite. Apparently, my Insanity work out paid off. The two entrées included a crispy chicken drizzled in a fabulous salsa, over fried plantains. Yaaaaas!!! The chicken was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The second entree was a platter of cheese enchiladas with the most DE-LICIOUS molé sauce I have ever had. Sorry Grandma. A must are the home made flour tortillas. So authentic it'll make you want to kick Taco Bell in the teeth. They also have a secret sauce that once hearing they will be coming soon to a grocery store near you, I sheepishly returned the bottle from my purse. Honduras food is different from the usual mexican food i'm use to. Servers were really nice despite it being 10min to closing. Bf got tilapia plate (off menu i think) and i got the carne asada. 1. Carne asada: rice, dry shredded cabbage, fried plantains and thin steak. Plantains were soft inside, but not fried enough. Like eating thick fries. Steak was good, but i'm not a steak person. Rice didn't stick together, but loved the way it was cooked. refried beans no comment. 2. Tilapia: lightly seasoned, everything else the same. Side veggies mainly grilled onions, bellpeppers and potato not flavored. 3 sheets of homemade tortilla....maiz for me & flour for bf. A bit thick, but nbd. I had been trying to find a good place to eat some pupusas and based off of the yelp reviews this seemed like a good place to go. Staff there was really friendly and the food was great. I got complimentary chips and salsa (first one is free if you want more you have to pay which I feel is reasonable) the salsa was delicious in my opinion. I ordered two bean and cheese pupusas but I honestly should have ordered one because I got full with just one. Food prices here are also reasonable which is definitely a plus. Let me start off by saying Maya's Cafe is a HIDDEN GEM! It's been a while since I've taken some time to gather my thoughts and taste buds and document my conclusions here on Yelp. But after giving Maya's Cafe a try a few days ago, I knew I just had to share my two cents about how ecstatic i was to have found a place like it! Tucked away in the Maplewood Plaza at the intersection of Bascom Avenue and Union Avenue lies Maya's Cafe, which apparently has been there for about four years. You'll find exceptional customer service there, which is often difficult to find these days. My boyfriend and I were greeted by Will at the counter. I think he could tell that it was our first time checking out Maya's, as he asked if we heard about the place through Yelp. I confirmed his assumption and told him that I was excited to taste the food and that if I loved it so much, I'd be a returning customer. Will was very friendly and made us feel as if we were guests of honor at his "home" and assured us that we would not be disappointed. He was right. After perusing through the menu board that spanned the entire back wall, we decided to go with the bacon wrapped prawns and barbacoa. These two dishes were uhhhmazzzing! The bacon wrapped prawns hurt so good when I popped them in my mouth (I kid you not). I was sadly counting down how many pieces I had left. The barbacoa was fork tender and had just the amount of spice without being overly salty. These dishes were that good that we decided to order another item after devouring these two dishes within minutes. Our next order was the carnitas; it was tasty, but nothing spectacular unfortunately. I'll definitely be back for the bacon wrapped prawns and barbacoa and will eventually want to try the fish dishes and burritos. Other items on the menu include taco salads, burritos, carne asada, flan, fried plantains. Most items on the menu are around $10, which is a steal considering the amount and taste of the food. Maya's offers complimentary chips and salsa when you dine in. If you're rollin' down the streets of Campbell with a yearning for savory Latin American Cuisine, then be sure to stop by Maya's Cafe. Finally a place in San Jose with good Handmade Flour Tortillas. It's a Honduras / Mexican restaurant. Had to work so took a break and went in for breakfast. The place was clean quick service and food's aroma filled the area. They got killer pupasas. I had the Bean & cheese wanted to scrape the plate. I will definitely be back for that. I've been to Maya's a couple times and both were ok experiences. However; I can't help but to feel like my feelings on Maya's are complicated. Ok, its not really that deep, but really I feel like I owe them. I owe them the opportunity to earn a better review than this measly 3 star evaluation. Here's the thing...I've ordered some pretty basic-b menu options. E.g. A breakfast burrito (chorizo) and a super taco plate w carnitas and fish. The breakfast burrito was good and the taco plate was ok. Those are the best adjectives I could come up with... Anyway, to my original point, I feel like these aren't representative of what Maya's can really do. Each time that I was there, I peered around the dining room and was ultra jel of what appeared to be more authentic Latin American dishes. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to order such an incredible looking entrée. Therefore, I owe them a proper dinner session and not just a hurried breakfast/work lunch. I only noticed the pan of chimps and heat lamp when I went to the counter after our meal to pay. My biggest complaint...LOUD music. I ordered the grilled tilapia which wasn't on the menu, but I had seen pics on yelp and they said they had it. It came with beans, rice, tortillas, tomato salsa, lettuce and avocado. I actually tried to sub out the beans for more lettuce, and I think they mixed it up with another order & I ended up with beans. Our waitress was really nice about it and brought me out an extra plate of lettuce. The portions are huge! The tilapia was a little salty. It was ok after I wrapped it into the tortilla to make a taco. The rice was really good and the flour tortillas seemed like they were made fresh. We were in a bit of a hurry and had less than an hour for lunch. This place took a little while to prepare our food, so i think some of us only had less than 10 mins to eat. If you're looking for something super fast, not sure if this would be the place. If you have a little time to spare, then it shouldn't be a problem. Probably takes longer bc it seems like they make everything fresh which is great. The tilapia dish was about $13-$14. A little pricey and maybe not worth it to me. One of those great hole in the wall places! I'm not talking about the taquerias you go to for drunchies, this place is the real deal and has authentic quality dishes. everything was so fresh! Most Mexican or Spanish food I expectedly eat tend to be rather intense in flavor drowned in red or green sauce but Maya's food was light, fresh with great savory flavor. The chips and salsa were bomb and the tortillas (corn and flour) are all handmade. I had the chile relleno which was delicious!! Im also giving it 5 stars instead of 4 for it's super friendly staff! I came here for a work dinner and was surprised to see how small Maya's is. After all were seated we waited at least 15 minutes for the waitress to bring us glasses of water. If they serve alcohol here I'm unaware - we were never offered the choice nor given a drink list. While the one waitress working the entire room finally came with our water she also brought a tiny bowl of tortilla chips with an even smaller bowl of lackluster soupy salsa. This was for four people and there was no hope of getting a second bowl. In fact, we had to dispatch the napkins and cutlery to the group after they were placed in a pile at the end of the table. I ordered the camarones Aztecas and a pupusa. The camarones came lukewarm with a side of beans and rice and a couple pieces of the lettuce. The pupusa was ok. The meal was served with a mustard that was a different way to dress shrimp, but not terrible. After everyone at the table was finished we waited at least 20 more minutes for the waitress to clear our table and bring the check. The other patrons appeared to be quite familiar with the owners and from my viewpoint were given much better service and possibly the opportunity to get refills and order cocktails. I have found my go-to place for lunch! This place is ridiculously good for the price. I went here with my girlfriend for lunch and we couldn't believe how awesome the food was. I got a text from my girlfriend suggesting we try this place and so we walked in and so a decent amount of people there for lunch. We took a look at the menu placed on the wall behind the register. There's plenty of selection for even the most fickle of palates. After reading previous Yelp reviews and pictures, we decided to order the bacon-wrapped shrimp and the barbacoa. We asked for salads instead of the rice and bean sides and the owner, Will, was more than happy to do that for us. When we got our food and took our first bites, we knew we'd be back here to eat again in the near future. The bacon-wrapped shrimps were delicious. Not too crunchy or overcooked. The barbacoa was just amazing. Savory, tender pieces of beef bursting with flavor and melting away in your mouth. We were pretty hungry still, so we ordered the carnitas as well. Due to many reviews, I gave it a try for lunch ... had an early lunch around 11 am and the store was pretty empty. The gentlemen at the cash register was pretty friendly and courteous. Ordered Barbacoa which comes with a salad, rice and bean and a soda from fountain. The meat was soooo tender and delicious. Never had Honduran food before and my first experience was delightful. My family and I are not big eaters but we were looking for more food at the end of the meal. My guess is you get better portion when dining in, especially the rice and the beans. The first time I ate here, I asked them to hold the sauce for my fried chicken. I'll stick with the oil from the fryer, thank you. The second time I ate here, I forgot to make that request. And to think, I had been pumping up Maya's as the best Honduran fried chicken in the United States! For all I know, it still is, but what a letdown that second trip was... After they put the sauce on my food, everything was soggy, from the fried chicken, to the plantains, to my general sense of well-being. We used to drive all the way to Daly City for pupusas! NO longer. We found this place on yelp and from my 30 years since falling in love w pupusas these are hands-down THE best I have ever had! Really, EVER! We live in Campbell so this location is perfect! The staff is always friendly and professional, there is a slight delay in getting your food. However, that is because your order is not pre-cooked! WHAT? Nope every thing is fresh like going to friend's house FRESH off the stove. My fiance had the bacon wrapped prawns and fell in love. My two boys have had burrito mojados and were actually LICKING the plate since their sauce is fantastic too! Even my 9 yr old picky eater fell in love w the loroco pupusas, orders TWO every time we go! Last time we went they had FRESHLY made Watermelon juice which was AMAZING! read more

I visited Maya's cafe for the first time today with my mom and my aunt in celebration of my mom's birthday (happy birthday, mom!). I was so excited about the food that I couldn't wait to write a review as soon as I got home. Now that I'm home, here goes~ The three of us shared (in descending order of deliciousness): *Fried plantains [5/5]: HECK YES. My favorite dish that we ordered. The plantain slices were thick and fried until they hot and caramel-y. They remind me of fried bananas with their sweetness, but the thicker and starchier composition makes them even more satisfying to eat. I could easily eat these all day, every day. The fried plantains came with a side of refried (?) black beans and a side of crema, but the plantains were most delicious pure. *Honduran tacos with chicken [5/5]: Our waitress described Honduran tacos tortillas stuffed with filling, rolled up, fried, smothered with cabbage, pico de gallo and tomato sauce, and topped with sliced boiled egg and crumbly cheese. Are you drooling already? Because I am (even though my belly is still full!). Our tacos were stuffed with shredded chicken. *Shrimp ceviche taco [5/5]: SO GOOD. You get nice big chunks of shrimp :) They don't serve their ceviche tostadas with crema/mayo on the bottom - FYI in case you like that stuff. *Fish ceviche taco [4/5]: There was a ton of fish on the tostada! Huge chunks too, not small minced pieces like I am used to. *Beleada super [3/5]: I was the most excited to try this dish. I'd never had a beleada before, let alone a super beleada! The tortilla was soooo good, like melt-in-your-mouth good. The filling was interesting: black beans, cheese, crema, avocado, and a fried egg. Sounds great, right? I think I just wanted the flavors to be a bit stronger...or just saltier. I honestly thought it was a bit bland. *Pupusas mixtas with queso y loroco [3/5]: If you are a fan of the way loroco tastes, you'll probably like this dish better than I did. I hadn't tried loroco before, and the waitress described it as tasting like spinach. I love spinach!...the loroco in this pupusa didn't taste like spinach :( It tasted kind of bitter, grassy, earthy...a bit like how hay smells? I just wasn't a fan. The texture of the pupusas was amazing, though: crisp, golden, and light. The pickled cabbage and red sauce served on the side prevented the dish from being too heavy. I'd love to try another flavor in the future. I would also like to say add our waitress was really sweet and attentive. She checked on us enough times that her service was considerate but not disruptive or annoying. The restaurant has a really homey atmosphere, and there seemed to be a lot of regulars eating at the same time we were. I WANT TO BE A REGULAR, TOO! read more
