Delicious authentic Honduran Mexican food. It's hard to find a good pupusa, and they make it as good as they come. Really good complimentary tortilla chips and salsa. High quality food.

I was back after more than a decade. What struck me first were the prices. Most of the items are $20-$35. Inflation has affected most of the restaurants but I felt the price point here was very high. On par with high end and fancy restaurants without the ambiance or service to match up. Kids menu and some alacarte dishes are still reasonably priced though. We got ** chicken fajita- 4/5- $25- plate came with three tortillas, we opted for corn. The tortillas were a good size and thick. Chicken was wonderfully done and had an excellent char. Plate also came with cheese, some salad, rice and beans. I recall rice and beans being fantastic last time but this time around they were just about ok. ** cheese quesadilla-4/5- they didn't skimp on the cheese. The outside had a beautiful char and was filled with ooey gooey salty cheese. ** Super Baleada- 4/5- it was my first time trying this dish so I was not sure what to expect. But it was essentially a wrap with beans, cheese, egg and avocado. Perfect for breakfast. ** pupusa-4/5- came with a side salad. The salad had a zing and helped lighten the meal. The pupusa was delicious and came with - filling of cheese and beans. **chicken tacos-4/5- vanilla version with diced chicken, onions and cilantro, this was for kids as they are now taco fans.

This is my weekly go to restaurant!!! Every dish here is delicious I love the breakfast, baliadas, carne asada and they always give me salsa! Did I mention they're salsa is so good and also the coffee with cinnamon

Man this is a hidden gem. This may be my favorite Latin spot in the area. They make their tortillas fresh and the tortilla for the taco was warm and it had a great fresh consistency. The Al pastor was amazing. I'll have to give this place a 4 star at the moment because i wasn't a fan of the soup. I tried the Sopa de Mariscos con Leche de Coco and it was just as described...shrimp in coconut milk. I was expecting some type of seasoning in the coconut milk but it didn't have much. But this was my first time trying the dish and based on the quality of everything else I assume that is what it's supposed to taste like. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I'll come back and try some of the other items and if they are as good as I think they will be out change this to a five star review.

This was my first time trying Honduran food, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was absolutely delicious. This spot is a bit of a hidden gem--a hole-in-the-wall--and like many of the previous reviews mentioned, you do need to be patient. I visited on a Sunday around 1 PM, and it took nearly 30 minutes for my dish to arrive, followed by another 15 minutes for my boyfriend's wet burrito. I ordered the fried chicken, and while the combination of flavors seemed unusual at first, it totally worked. The chicken was perfectly crispy and smothered in a red and yellow sauce. I believe the red sauce was ketchup-based, and the yellow tasted like honey mustard. The dish was served on a bed of crispy plantains, which added a nice texture. Our second dish, the wet burrito, was good but not particularly memorable. It seems like the real standout dishes are the traditional Honduran ones. The restaurant also offers complimentary chips and salad, which was a nice touch. While the servers were attentive, they were a bit reserved when it came to answering questions or engaging in conversation. The place is small and filled with locals, adding to its charm. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to others.

Grabbing a quick weekend evening meal, you'd be quick to dismiss Maya's as not a terribly serious choice for good food, but they do a very solid job on their Honduran eats. It's certainly not the tightest operation being run, so be ready to adapt on the service front, but for their solid portions of deliciousness I'd sure be ready for plenty more rounds. Overall I'd place it at 4.5, but I'm comfortable rounding up on strength of their menu. Service is well, serviceable, but a slight weakness on their front so I can see where mixed reviews come from. Our server was polite, but shorter on words when asking for recommendations so it seems a bit of a given you're expected to know what's what already. Food came out sequentially, so while it wasn't too long of a wait it was a bit of an awkward one since it still took 20min for the last entree to come out. We were mostly left alone afterwards so it was hard to flag any server down to let them know my entree was missing its queso and my brother's entree was missing tortillas (which I wouldn't have known if I didn't compare to my friend's sets). Then came time to settle the check which had an error to correct. Each thing by itself is fine, but it all added up to a bit more chaos than I'd prefer so YMMV. That all said the food is banger! I'd say it's enough to make it up for it, it also being a rather super-local hole-in-the-wall. The menu is grouped mostly by meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner) and then by item type (like specials, soup, seafood, etc.). Dinner plates generally with rice, beans, and tortilla. Cheese pupusa = 4/5 Solid on texture with a good amount of cheesiness for the books, plus a nice small lightly pickled salad for contrasting crunch. The dipping salsa was rather light though, which I personally feel like overall it tasted a bit light on seasoning (fine as an appetizer of sorts). Could just be a honduran thing though, cause the entrees were on-point on seasoning. Carne Asada dinner = 5/5 Honestly it's a pretty great dinner set that I had trouble finishing with a great amount of variety to keep you on your culinary toes. The plantain chips were perfect with a great crisp and oozing flavor (even the spilled salsa that was meant for the beef tasted great on them). Beef was a tough cut but I hardly noticed with how well seasoned it was and it just melded right in with the rice and beans, plus a nice crunch from pickles on top. Just all around deliciousness on a platter. Cerdo Tamales = 5/5 Positively massive and very filling. The chicken was damn near the most tender and soft I've ever had it. Like for real, this has set the bar for softness for chicken. Very nice as a cozy meal and lots of loving carbs. Just the right amount of seasoning on everything to to bring out the flavors without being overbearing and a great amount of cheese to complement the corn/rice.

Such a great food; super tasty , well made and big portions. The caldo de Rez was super delicious; enchiladas , pupusas and much more. We were a group of 11 and we had a feast. The service is super courteous, friendly and agile. Definitely will go back and totally recommend.

This place is easily in my top 5 restaurants of all time. I come all the way from Ventura for this place and it NEVER disappoints. I visit my family who live in WG but this place comes before them (just kidding... kinda). I was hesitant to order on Door Dash (I was without a car this visit) but dannnng! The food was as delicious as it always is! Piping hot soup, rice and tortillas! The tortillas here are the best I've ever had. Gave my picky sister a bite and she loved it, too. If you live or visit the bay area and don't try this place, let's set you up a doctor's appointment because there is something wrong with you. Viva Maya's!! Este lugar me vuelve loca!

*First time review, dined indoors* We wanted to try something different and went to Maya's! The second we walked through the door, the lady working greeted us warmly with a smile. Super sweet and sat us down. We were brought chips, salsa and ordered orange soda and coke. Hugeeeee bottles omg. Delicious ice cold in the glass. Bacon wrapped shrimp: 5/5 crispy bacon and perfectly cooked shrimp, not over cooked! Huge and 6 total (our photo shows 5 because too hungry to wait!) Wet burrito: 4/5 shredded chicken with red sauce. Taste was great just wish there was a tad more chicken as it was primarily rice. Very good, would order again. Really want to try the beef plate they had. Really love the warm servers and would come back for that!

Went looking for a great breakfast burrito and found one here! It comes with rice and beans, be sure to add potatoes. One of the best breakfast burritos I've had in San Jose. Will was awesome, and made us feel at home. read more

Went here for lunch today and I really enjoyed it, the food was fresh and delicious. The tacos are not greasy like normal taquerias are and don't make you feel bloated after. The pupusa was delicious, nice and light, one of the best I've had. The place itself was super clean and the people working there were attentive and friendly. I would go back and explore more of the Honduran food they have, it looked like some interesting stuff I don't usually see at other places. read more

Wow! I can't believe I've lived up the street from this place for 5 years and I've never tried it. SO good!! We ordered the super burrito, the fried chicken, and the plantains. Everything was so flavorful and the staff was very friendly. We will definitely be back so we can try more items from the menu. read more

OMG! I ate here the first time this evening and it was stellar. I had the pork and cheese pupusas with their green sauce was so tasty. Drank really good Honduran beer, Port Royal. I ordered carne asada. The corn tortillas are AMAZING! homemade. I rolled up rice, fresh avocado, beans, steak, and more of that green sauce. So damn good. Cannot wait to eat around that menu. read more

I was looking for something different than the usual Mexican fare so I went here based on reviews! Pros Great Honduran food Cons Waitress was rude If you don't ask for chips & salsa you don't get any!!! Terrible since I didn't know first is complimentary. If you are in the neighborhood and want good pupusas, it's great! Don't get the fried plantains as so many reviews say they are great because the were huge sponges of nasty stale oil!!! Not pleasant for your stomach! read more

Food is a solid 4 but service at best is a 1. Overall I'd give it 2.5 but the service was so subpar I cannot round up to a 3. Server only checked on us when they wanted to up sell us on refills on drinks and chips. Also very slow considering we were the only ones at the restaurant that didn't have our food yet, well over 20-30 minutes for one order of food. read more

Came during the late afternoon and were seated right away. Staff was helpful and friendly - but nothing compared to the excellent food! I had shrimp fajitas covered in delicious melted cheese, and they were worth the money. Even better were the warm, fresh flour tortillas - seriously some of the best tortillas I've had. read more

Ordered take-out from here. The staff was very friendly and polite. Honduran style Carne Asada: Tasty but was a little on the tough side Carnitas: Pretty good but we found the meat to be a little too fatty for our taste At $24, it was a little pricey. I would come back again, though. read more

They are across the street from Campbell Cigars, and that's how we found them. They have very helpful staff, and she helped me pick something different than burrito or tacos this time! I don't remember what I had but it was really good! haha! They also got good beers. A great place to hangout with good food! read more

take this with a grain of salt 5/5 - service 3/5 - food i love americanized mexican food. i have very little experience with authentic mexican food. my girlfriend liked her tamales and thought the pupusas were decent. i hated her tamales, but i hate most tamales, so my critique isn't fair. i agree with her that the pupusas are decent. the taste is fairly subtle. i'm not sure if that's how pupusas are; these were the first i've had. i had the steak wet burrito. ingredients were very fresh. good burrito. the service was very good - VERY good. very generous, helpful and attentive. read more

This is a small cute family owned restaurant near campbell. Very friendly host & hostess. It was our first time trying out Honduran food & liked it. I ordered the chilie verde with fresh flour tortilla, It was the best I have eaten thus far. Hubby ordered the carne asade he wasn't too thrilled about it. Form the start, Maya's serves up a quality experience. The salsa fresco is flavorful but not too spicy. Stop. Before you do anything else, order pupusas, get the frijoles ones. I couldn't resist ordering the carnitas and I was rewarded with fresh, moist (but not greasy) pork that was a perfect match for the fresh flour tortillas. Looks like everything here is a safe bet! read more

I decided to try out Maya's Cafe for lunch today due to the great Yelp reviews I read. I walked in and was immediately helped by the gentleman behind the counter. I told him it was my first time there and he was really great about making recommendations and making sure it was something that I would like. He was very friendly and made sure I was well accommodated the entire time I was there. I ended up ordering chicken fajitas and I have to say, those were some of the best fajitas I have ever eaten. Everything was really flavorful and the fresh homemade tortillas were excellent. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious also. I honestly feel like I had better service here than I do at most traditional sit down restaurants. Maya's is super close to my work, so I will definitely be back to try out more items! read more

All I can say is Maya's is outstanding! We read the reviews on Yelp and decided to try it. The food is so authentic! We ordered a ton because we wanted to try it all. We got a bean & cheese pupusa, camerones azteca, barbacoa, pork tamale, and Honduran chicken enchiladas. Everything was so tasty! The tortillas are seriously the best I've EVER had! The only complaint I can come up with is that there was bones in the pork tamale. We will be coming back for sure and telling everyone about Maya's!!! read more

Stopped by here yesterday for the first time for take out. The good: the staff is friendly and it seemed quite clean, which is always a plus when you are eating somewhere. :^) The bad: they said my order would be 15-20 minutes, but it was a solid 35 minutes before it was ready. The good: the veggie burrito, chile verde chicken and chicken fajitas were quite tasty. The bad: the chicken tamale was tiny and had a bone right in the middle of it....and I'm simply not a fan of tooth-breaking surprises in my food. The good: the red salsa was shockingly spicy, if you are a fan of such things. The bad: the beans are bland and crying for some onions or something to give them a depth of flavor. Sooo....1 star for the wait that was twice as long as promised, the bland beans and the hidden bone in the middle of the overpriced tamale dish, but 5 stars for the fantastic chicken fajitas and chicken chile verde dish! Those were both certainly worth what we paid for them. read more

Legit Mexican spot, man I wish it was walking distance. The popusas chicharron are money, and the mole poblano dish. It's a great beginner mole. Otherwise the barbacoa is another go to. Worth a visit of your craving some Mexican or Honduran food! read more

Only complaint was that I didn't have a whole lot of tripe pieces - would've liked more of the tripe. Would definitely have the tripe soup again and look forward to trying other items on the menu.

What a surprise! Yes, a hole in the wall, but if the owner is there, you will be well-treated. We were greeted and seated. We were dehydrated from the 90 degree weather. Our glasses were filled at least 3 times, mine was 4, during the meal. Fantastic service. However, the owner left and before he returned with a 5 gallon bottle of filtered water, a couple wasn't greeted, and they seated themselves. This is a small mom and pop kind of place. However, after he came back in, he gave that couple the same exceptional service experience we had enjoyed.. We are so glad we came. My son's and daughter's Carne Asada were very flavorful and succulent. Fresh homemade tortillas made us feel like family. The owner made me a custom dish of fish and grilled vegetables, Fillet of Sole. Some of you reading may remember the day when you could go into a restaurant and could order a Fillet of Sole. He flies the fish in fresh from the East Coast. His Sole has that incredible fresh clean fish favor with that wonderful melt-in-your-mouth taste that you can't find anywhere else and yet remember from the past. We will be coming back! Maya's Cafe is one of my very favorite restaurants! I crave their coconut seafood soup. The broth is so flavorful with the sweet and savory coconut milk, an array of seafood and plantains. The seafood is a combination of shrimp, crab legs, fish filet, mussels in the shell. All topped with chopped cilantro, with a side of rice. This is one of their delightful Honduran dishes. My daughter had the carnitas fajitas. The pork was so flavorful! The tortillas are house made both flour and corn. They would be delicious even on their own. My husband had the Caldo, de Rez, a very flavorful, hearty beef and vegetable soup with tender fall off the bone beef, veggies and yucca. Hmmm, even the chips and salsa are tasty! The menu is quite large with many Honduran and Mexican specialties. This is a small family run restaurant. Everything is made fresh to order. The service is great and friendly. Maya Cafe was located near to a hotel I stayed at while in San Jose. This little authentic restaurant has a nice selection of traditional Mexican fare, with some additional Honduran items as well. I ordered the huevos rancheros, which were very good and very delicious. The flour tortillas were so fresh! I also got a chicken and cheese pupusa which were really to die for. This was the best thing on the table. The service was a little slow, so be prepared to be patient since the wait is well worth. The flavors will reward your patience. Highly recommended. read more

Went into this place not knowing what to expect because the outside looks somewhat ominous and secluded. The location feels like it's on the outskirts or something. The inside is not too big but very much inviting but subtle. Screens on every corner with different channels. We were received and served promptly. We both had the chicken mole. Delicious plate came with rice and beans topped with cheese, along with some (possibly house made) flour tortillas. They were pretty friendly when we first entered the restaurant, asking whether we had questions and then coming by to actually answer our questions (ie what recommendations she had). While Maya's had a lot of options and a lot of diversity, it lacked a memorable flavor and did not impress my date, who is Honduran and grew up eating variations of some of the menu items. The pupusas here are definitely to die for! I feel like this place often gets overlooked because of the number of pupusa serving restaurants in San Jose, but honestly, they have the best ones here.
