Well, the food is fantastic and my boss and I used to eat here every week, but today we had a surprise: the new menu came with a very small print addition, 18% service charge added to the bill for unspecified reasons. Needless to say, that's where the tip money went. I am furious that they sneaked this in like this. It is basically a 20% price increase, since they add this before tax is calculated. Boo ! They currently have outdoor dining available in the parking lot in front of the restaurant with their round tables that can seat at least six people comfortably, separated by plastic hanging from canopy tents to block against the sun. I had to tell him not just a hair but a pubic hair. He showed no remorse, just ok, you don't want to pay for your meal. We didn't pay. I will report this to the FDA. Family of 4, came here for the first time and arrived right when it opened. The restaurant felt super dirty! Grimy tables, food on the carpet. Definitely needs an update. Right when we sat down the waiter asked us if we were going to be done eating by 6. I felt like we had to rush our dinner since we were being timed. Most of the food was just okay. We had the braised short rib and I felt they were way too overpriced. The sauce tasted like a can of Dinty Moore. I think most of the food was way too overpriced for what we were served. It felt like no effort was put into the presentation as well as it was all very cold. We had the pork shumai and it was HORRIBLE! It was so dry and tasted old. To be honest Trader Joe's shumai is sooooo much better and less than half the price. Lastly, when we got our bill there was a gratuity charge INCLUDED in the bill. The food is decent, location is good - however, the service is not only slow, but forgetful. It's somewhat what you expect of a Chinese restaurant...but why? When we came for dim sum, it was painful enough to think that we'll go elsewhere next time. We did get seated quickly, but it's only because we showed up when they opened. They brought our tea, but we had a big table so when it ran out of water, instead of refilling the water the waitress took the pot...and never returned. She honestly seemed more interested in brown nosing with the regulars than doing her job. Three of us planned to put some dim sum in our faces today at Saigon Harbor. Yeah, the line. So we decided to hit it early. Oh, "the best laid plans...." I got up early, hit the gym to stoke the furnace, came back, checked in. They're girls. One washed her hair. The other is never on time, I don't even try to understand why any more. The 10AM in Sunnyvale thing wasn't going to happen, but we were all headed there when I decided to abort mission. I don't like standing in parking lots for unpredictable but probably unreasonable amounts of time. I made the calls, let's go to Barber Court in Milpitas and divide and conquer...one could get on the list at Mayflower, the others would try for Koi Palace in the place next door. May the shortest queue win. So I strolled up to Mayflower at around half-past-ten. I thought it was closed because there were no people outside and a big piece of paper on the door. Familiar dim sum thing lately. But my momentum carried me ever forward and I gave the door a tug. It opened. I walked in and was greeted by three big smiles. "How many?" I told them we're three, but the others were still on their way, they said, "it's okay, let's get you a table, it's about to get busy." Do you usually get this at dim sum places? Me neither. So I called the girls and they came over. While I waited all the carts came by to offer me food, tea was also offered. Dim sum being such a communal thing, and considering my company, it would be a bad idea to make unilateral decisions so I told them to come back when my party was here. They arrived. The dim sum carts returned promptly. The smiles. Not typical for dim sum places. Mayflower is an outright friendly place compared to others. It's not mind-blowing or anything, but their service is pretty good for sure, from the waiter who asked how things were and promptly crossed one dish off the bill and took it away when we told him it was undercooked in spite of how we had taken most of it to make this decision, to the cashier who intuitively gave me her pen when she saw me struggling with another, to the aforementioned smiley mostesses. To me dim sum falls loosely into two categories. Some of the best is really clean tasting and elevates the core ingredients, mostly seafood and pork. Some of the most sinful has that fried, dirty-greasy thing happening. Mayflower is the latter, and it gets them a bad rep on occasion, but I'm an equal opportunity nommer. Dim sum, dropped on the pavement in front of me? Ten second rule applies. Any of it. We filled the table with bamboo steamers and little plates and hit it hard. Then the groans. Too full, but committed to clearing the table, we decided who would take each of the final pieces. We had: eggplant stuffed with shrimp paste (yum), har gow (typical, yum), shrimp roll (good, but falling apart), pork rib (we gave it back), greens (good), fun guo (tasty), fried shrimp dumpling (dirty good) and some other stuff I can't remember that was probably good too. It's where the locals go! We went there at noon and it was packed with hungry people. The four of us were put at a table that would usually seat 10 but I didn't mind at least we didn't have to wait. Do not go there! We were there last weekend when the bill supposed to be $74.50, but the restaurant with "small fine prints" added 18% to the bill for its "management operation" but not "gratitudes"!! Also, right after I paid without knowing the 18% added wasn't gratitudes, the next day I got fraud warnings from my AMEX card that my card was charged twice as frauds!
