I've been in the military for 14 years and this is my 5th move since 2001. McCarthy Transfer was by far the worst moving company I've ever dealt with. McCarthy was contracted to give us a full unpack after our move in. I realize that this isn't really possible, however McCarthy set a new standard for poor service and even worse customer service. Rather than unpack my bedroom, McCarthy took all 5 wardrobe boxes and dumped them out on my king size bed. This resulted in a giant mess, and multiple pieces of broken glass due to the fact that everything was dumped on my bed. Ultimately it took me hours of work to clear off my bed, and I had to scour my mattress for broken glass. When I finished my bedroom I moved onto my 9 month old daughters room. At this point I was furious when I realized that the movers had dumped 3 or 4 boxes of household items into her crib (including tools, snowboard boots and a razor blade.) This was unacceptable and not only damaged the crib but was a serious safety hazard as I had to thoroughly inspect the crib to make sure there were not any small items (or razor blades) under her mattress after I sorted through the mess. When I initially called to complain, I was put in contact with the man who had unpacked my house and he began yelling at me over the phone telling me that this was all my fault. Ultimately I called the main office and the owner came out to see for himself what his moving team did to my house. Basically he apologized and said he was sorry, because the damage had already been done. In the end, I suffered extremely rude customer service, and poor and unsafe unpacking by McCarthy. If you are in the military do not accept McCarthy if you can help it. If you're a civilian, avoid them at all costs. read more

For our international move, this company was asked by the relocation company to come and pack our things. Then, about $600 in cash disappeared from the money we got from selling all our furniture before the move. The guys went through our things that we specifically told them not to pack and took the money. We call the police but nothing could be done. Really disappointed. read more

We were in a long-term relationship with this company: A crew came and loaded up our belongings into vaults, they then stored those vaults in their warehouse for nearly three months, and then one of their drivers transported our belongings to our new home 1,000+ miles away and unloaded everything. From initial consultation to the moving truck driving away from the new home, we were "in a relationship" with McCarthy for four months. It couldn't have been a better experience. The initial consultation was very comprehensive. Thomas walked our entire house, backyard and garage space by space, taking very thorough notes in order to provide a precise estimate (and offering helpful packing advice at every turn). He even brought us a stack of free boxes. Before moving day, I made several trips to their warehouse, where they had lots of used boxes free for the taking. Each time I visited, Thomas again offered helpful advice to help us get ready for the move. On moving day, the crew was on time, friendly and hard-working, and did a great job of laying down blankets, wrapping door jambs and taking other protective measures. They also took great care wrapping furniture and other items to protect them during transfer. Thomas had previously given me a tour of their warehouse, so I knew our belongings would be well protected from the elements while they were stored for several months. He also included two months of storage in the price we paid, and when our storage went over to nearly three months, he gave us that extra storage time at no charge. When our new home was finally ready for move-in, the company was flexible in giving us a two-day delivery window (on a weekend), and they were ultimately able to arrive on our preferred date of those two days. The unloading process went flawlessly (again with a friendly and hard-working crew), with everything placed in the home where we directed. One of the crew spent more than an hour laying down blankets and cardboard and wrapping door jambs and stair bannisters, so that no furniture pieces or boxes ever made contact with the house until placed in their final resting place. If you're still reading this long review, then you'll understand why I wrote at such length: because this company continually impressed me with top-notch customer service at every stage of the move. I can't compliment them enough. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the cost; but moving is expensive, and is largely based on weight, so their price was fair (and, frankly, I didn't mind paying it at all after receiving the level of service they gave us). Bottom line: I'd rate this company 10 out of 10, and will definitely be calling them when we move again. read more

This past week I moved from San Diego to Tucson. I called around and McCarthy was the ONLY one who came to my home for an estimate. I have a few valuable antiques that I couldn't replace, including a marble top on a Victorian chest. From beginning to end, there was no hype. Truda on the phone knew her stuff. John came for the estimate and carefully reiterated everything and wrote it down. The estimate was in the ball park.Tom and his guys came on S. Diego's hottest day and put all my furniture in new moving blankets, taped each one carefully so the furniture wouldn't slip, then shrink wrapped it all. Amazing! the few things I didn't know how to pack, they did it beautifully. From beginning to end, it was a pleasure to deal with McCarthy.I hope I don't have to move again, but if I do, I'm calling them. Considerate, intelligent, and thorough. It all arrived in perfect shape. I even had a check list they gave me where they would yell out the number of what was going into the house so I could check it off to make sure everything arrived. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. From my first call for an estimate to the last box was unloaded, McCarthy Transfer was awesome. To start, they came and did an in home estimate BEFORE the move. This was awesome, because who wants to pay for the wrong sized truck or for more help than you really need? Thomas and Truda were so helpful in giving me tips and advice on packing and prepping before the move. This definitely helped the crew be more efficient on moving day, and it also made unpacking for us easy as well! Oh, and I was able to get plenty of boxes and packing materials free from their warehouse. Our moving day crew Tony, Greg, and Mikey were great. They were so efficient, professional, and we really felt confident our belongings were in good hands! I moved a 2 story 4 bath, 3 bedroom house with a garage and a yard. They had the house packed in the truck ready to drive to the new place in just a few hours. My grandmother was here to help take care of the kids during the move, and she was also impressed. She said that in her personal experience with numerous navy moves over the years, she has never seen a crew as good as the one we had. We received a call the previous evening from the driver Thomas providing a one-hour window for arrival the next morning. True to his word the delivery showed up within that window of time. The crew of Tony, Walter, Mariano, Mario and Roger immediatel prepped doors and floors prior to bringing in furniture and boxes. Greedy and unprofessional total rip off after the initial charges they also charge you to bring your stuff down to the floor just to pick it up I can see if your going in it all the time but if your coming one time to pick it up 45$ for them to bring it down and another 25$ for the guy to load it up in your truck for you that you didn't ask for those fees should be applied with initial payment and you should tip the guy loaded it up for you this makes you not wanna tip just a total waste I would hire another company to take it to a self storage where you don't have all these extra hidden fees. I had a military move, and McCarthy was on the packing/shipping end of the process. Overall, I was very satisfied, especially in comparison to the delivery/unpacking company we were assigned. The team was on time and worked quickly. Everything arrived in tact and safe. A few issues: some of the team did not do a great job logging/detailing our items. A few high end items like game systems were not listed in the inventory...when I pointed it out at the end of the day, they had just thrown them into boxes of clothes and not noted them (they are supposed to note serial numbers, etc.). The supervisor was very good about this and added them to the sheet, and he was very frustrated with his team. the only other issue is that the packing team packed a bunch of garbage with my stuff: ie., empty rolls of packing tape, instead of bringing it out to the trash. It's not the biggest deal, but it's a lazy thing to do. read more

Because of her helpfulness and expertise, I used McCarthy for packing. The guys were fantastic. They were professional, careful, and easy to work with. They kept me updated on their estimated arrival and they finished the job in a fraction of the time. My things transported without a single ding or scratch. Everything was well packed. These guys knew what they were doing. I would like to add Truda's communication is excellent and she is really on the ball. I was not able to select this company for my move as my request for a bid came too late in the busy season (summer) to get my belongings loaded and to my new home out of state in the ideal time frame for me. Still, I think I should let potential customers know that they will get the most experienced information from this company's representatives. Truda knows the ins and outs of this business and will tell you what to look for and what to avoid. I did experience one of the ruses she warned me about: the broker who gives a telephone survey, then changes the basis on which the cost is made. Mark, who came to my home, did my assessment inventory and I learned so much from him. I was definitely sorry that I was not able to have the luxury of choosing between them and one or two others but because my request came in quite late, they were not able to give me a pickup date that worked for me. read more

Very poor customer service. Hired them for a move, and will not be doing so again in the future. Several items went "missing" during transit, the majority of the items that went missing also happened to be among the most valuable items (jewelry, Mac Book, etc.) and easily concealable/transported. Since they take inventory of everything, there should be no lack of a chain of custody from each moving site to another. The only reasonable explanation is that the items were identified as valuable, and then "walked off". Multiple items were damaged and were considered irrecoverable. The lead loader had a very smug attitude about how everything would be packed correctly and there would be no damage. This was clearly not the case. When calling about the damage and the missing items, I was met with a lady on the phone that told me to file a claim and then hung up on me without giving any further assistance. Please keep in mind, I did not call with an abrasive attitude, I was inquiring about whether or not they could help me find my missing items. I would highly recommend using another company, STAY AWAY from McCarthy Transfer and Storage. read more

Derrick and Jorge packed a 26' U-haul truck in what must be record time. They packed it floor to ceiling tight so the load can't shift. They were super helpful and attentive to our needs. I really wanted to give this company a chance but after my experience, I am giving this company 1 star. I wish I could give them negative stars. Guess that's what happens when the military gives the job to the lowest bidder. Where do I even start? The first day was a bit of a nightmare since the packers were horrible and weren't prepared. The surveyor must not have given an accurate estimate even tho we showed him every square inch of our place. The packers didn't bring enough packing material the first day and all they did was complain and comment about how much stuff we had. The male who packed us out the first day did a TERRIBLE job. Random things just thrown all together in a box then another huge box packed with only 3 items in it. The female dropped and shattered our blender and when they were done, they left our apartment filled with boxes to the point it was a fire hazard because we couldn't move around. When I called to voice my concerns, they couldn't care less and told us they wouldn't come load our boxes in the truck until the next day. We ended up staying at a friends house that night because it was too dangerous to try and stay with all the boxes blocking our exit. When we finally got to unpacking, many things were broken or damaged. Overall a frustrating experience. read more

Just had to do a quick move in town and the let me tell you from beginning to end the staff was amazing. Super courteous and knowledgeable with the initial coordination and on the day of the move Dustin & Craig really did an outstanding job. These guys were friendly with a customer satisfaction work ethic. Quick to load & offload with zero damage to my belongings. As well creative in moving the big parts upstairs. I've done a few moves in my life time and never experienced movers such as these from McCarthy Transfer. Bottom line, I highly recommend these guys whether doing a local move or cross country simply because they care and treat your belongings as if it were there's. What more do you want!?! read more

I would give them a 10 if possible! We originally planned on a 1 day move but just before the move day found out our closing was delayed so we needed to keep our household goods in temporary storage. Truda juggled the schedule and was able to set this up for us on short notice. We ended up needing a few more days of storage and they accommodated our schedule. Even though we were in a tough spot, they gave us very reasonable storage prices and we barely went over the initial budget, even with the extra storage time. Manny and his crew were very professional and did an excellent job packing, loading and unloading our stuff with no damage. They were so good we doubled our initial tip.
