I pulled in here on my way home from work because I had a baaaaaaad IBS episode. I felt so bad wrecking their bathroom I bought dinner for me and my kid. I am so picky about Brunswick stew that I stopped eating it years ago. I gave up trying to find good stew. Well, I filled up their lavatory with the worst stink so I caved and added that to my dinner order. Holy shite balls! It was FANTASTIC! I'm not a bbq fan but I am now after having their pulled pork, Mac and cheese and coleslaw! Wooooooo doggy! And the hot bbq sauce is killer!!!! Probably won't be back. Although the staff was pleasant and service was quick the BBQ was not good at all. We got the jumbo brisket sandwiches with 2 sides and was very disappointed when the meat looked and tasted like it had been boiled. Didn't look appetizing, had no flavor and was difficult to finish. You can tell alot about a BBQ joint by their Brunswick stew. This place tries to pass off something that has the consistency, look and texture of baby food for Brunswick stew. Also, with no flavor. I have had food at this location for some time . I don't know how many years. Mainly to go and catering . I decided to go in for lunch break . This place is not fancy at all it's sum what a order pay and a food runner service place. This place is Very solid for there BBQ and there sides. I usually get the BBQ pork or chicken sandwich with a side of okra and Mac and cheese. The smoked meats are very moist and tender . The okra is cooked to order cause it was very hot. Mac and cheese is decently not from a box. There BBQ sauce is to dye for. I personally like there hot style sauce . They also have few non BBQ items like the chili dogs and and homemade smoked sausage sliders. I notice a line at the register during lunch around 1230ish . So if you are getting to go call a head .Over all great place for good southern BBQ and excellent fast service from the cashier to the food servers . read more

OK - this could be dangerous....Did the final paperwork at my new home in Atlanta (transplant from Chicago) - starving, drive about 4 blocks and see a neat looking BBQ place in a strip mall - now Chicago's a town that's great at cooking a lot of things....but BBQ ain't one of them.......so whenever I'm down South or in Texas, I eat BBQ almost every night.....The Ribs here MIGHT have been the best I've ever had....and when I told a friend, she said "you have to try the cobbler there, it's the best"...then I saw the nice little patio section outside... So, when the wife comes down for good in a couple weeks, I can bribe her by telling her they have free cheesy biscuits, and they do have salads on the menu and that the calories won't count if we walk there - and, we can take the puppies and sit outside....Got a hunch this is going to be an at least once a week place...... read more

I'd heard good things about Slope's catering, so I figured it was past time for a trek OTP to give another barbecue place a first visit. I had one of the combination plates to get a good sample of what Slope's had to offer. It was a big portion, but one I was determined to conquer in the name of research. No, really...it had nothing to do with wanting to eat a few pounds of barbecue. It was all about getting to know Slope's. The pulled pork was the best part of the combo. While the ribs were good, they weren't as tender or messy as I prefer. The sauce for the meat was good, but a little too similar to a lot of other barbecue joins to really garner any discernible impression from me. After polishing off my chicken, ribs, and pulled pork, I managed to sneak a few bites of the sides at the table. Nothing that really jumped out at me, but I was surprised to see they had Black eyed peas on the menu. Not a lot of 'cue joints offer that one. All in all, a solid barbecue experience..but not one that I'm dying to revisit. I'd rather look for smaller, dirtier spots for more interesting barbecue. read more

I don't know what Gretchen O. is talking about... I really enjoy eating here. It's a pretty simple place - you walk in and order at the counter, then get your beverage, seat yourself, and a few minutes later your order is brought to your table. I'll agree that they don't have the best service, but it's not really because the associates are rude. I think it has more to do with the design and the fact that you don't really get to interact with anyone as it's set-up as a "What'll Ya Have?!?" type place. I was recently treated to lunch here by our receptionist and we both got the chopped pork plate. The barbecue is really good and so is their sauce, so definitely don't worry about ordering too much as you'll want to eat it all. Slopes BBQ is a Must Visit. Brisket Melt, Sweet Potato Fries, and BBQ Baked Beans with a Drink! On Half Priced Dessert day, I was being such a FATTY and I got the BLACKBERRY COBBLER A LA MODE... w/ a Scoutmob coupon... Total Cost $8.52 and I was STUFFED!!! The Brisket Melt was nice, Really Good Sweet Potato Fries, and The BBQ Baked Beans brought it all together... I wasn't the biggest fan of the BBQ sauce, but honestly... Its really not needed... and they have PLENTY of other kinds of sauces. I even got a honey mustard with my fries, and they weren't trying to squeeze 50cents out of me... To some maybe that's nothing, but that means something to me! ;-) I'm giving it 5 stars, not because it was the best BBQ EVER, but because it was Delicious, I got a GREAT DEAL, and the people were really nice... I love slopes. It is not fancy. IT IS NOT FANCY. if trendy bbq places (like we have in Chicago, where I live now) is your thing, then Slopes is not for you. But if you want a classic southern everyday place to get a hot lunch, then Slopes is spot on. I eat here almost every time I come home to ATL to visit. I always get a veggie plate, and they're just good and classic: great mac and cheese, savory collards (pour in some spicy vinegar!), sweet and tangy slaw, crispy okra, etc. etc. YUM. I also recently tried the bbq brisket sandwich, and it was GREAT. juicy, smokey, yum. This is not the best bbq in the world. But it's fun, and yummy, and cheap, and a great place for lunch. 4 solid stars. read more

I also got the baked beans, the sweet potato fries, the potato salad and the brunswick stew. And yes I ate it ALL. The pork spare ribs were smokey, had just the right pull, and were moist and tender on the inside, with a nice pop when you bit into them. I'd say they were probably some of the better ribs in Atlanta. Better than Daddy D's but not as good as Fox brothers. About as good as BBQ #1. YUM. The pulled pork was just dry and not very good. If you have to mix BBQ sauce into it for it to have enough moisture and taste, then it can definitely be improved up. Overall the sides were about average.The sweet potato fries were pretty good, but definitely not as good as the ones from the vortex, which i proceeded to eat at 1 hour later. The baked beans were good, but for all i know they could have been from a can. There was no originality in the execution of them. my favorite side was actually the potato salad. It was chunky, flavorful, and not overwhelmed with vinegar and mayo. Very well balanced. So get the half off coupons, and come here and get 1.5 racks of ribs per coupon. That's 1.5 racks of ribs for 12.50!!!! you cant even buy raw ribs that cheaply!! Oh yeah, and the sauce is really good here too. Tried Slopes (Johnson Ferry) today to see how compares to my two favorite joints, Fat Matt's and Williamson Bros. Went around 7:00 on a Tuesday and there was not much business but that did not matter since I was getting a to-go order. Cashier was friendly and prompt and accepted the Groupon with no hassles. My order was ready in less than five minutes. Impressive so far. First, the Okra was tasty and I received a good portion for the price. It was cooked properly; being neither soggy nor floating in a puddle excess oil, both of which would have indicated an improper cooking temprature. Next I had a 1/2 rack of ribs which were moist and tender. I found the sauce to be tasty but very middle of the road spice wise; a bit more kick would help but that is a personal preference. The Brunswick Stew - Last time I checked, and an online recipe search backs me up, Brunswick Stew is made with Pork and, usually, Chicken and generally includes most of the following: Tomatoes, Corn, Lima Beans,Okra and Potatoes. What I was given was a pint of meat shreds floating in an oily brown mess with a few miniscule pieces of corn floating in it. This was a bland, oily insult to the palate that went down the trash disposal. Lastly, I ordered 1 pound of pulled Pork. Sadly, the Pork was dry and tasteless (emphasis on tasteless) with the texture of steamed carboard. Fortunately there was plenty of BBQ sauce to drown it in. So - Okra was tasty, ribs were good. Well, they definitely get points for price. While ordering, I commented to the girl behind the counter how cheap I thought the prices were. She then informed me that those prices were based on an updated menu that will start tomorrow, and it will actually be cheaper. Whoa. After ordering at the counter upon entering, our food was out before I even filled my drink. I was surprised to find that my okra was definitely fried to order, thank goodness. Not being too hungry, I tried the pork sandwich and fried okra. The bun was several days old and cracked like paper on the top. Luckily there sauce was there to compensate. The regular sauce was probably the highlight of the meal. It was a little sweet, a little tangy - an overall nice balance. Okra was okay. A little heavy on the breading, definitely needed salt. Ate here for 1st time this w/e. Had the pork sandwich special. I thought the pork was just ok. Honestly, it didn't even really taste too much like pork to me. I doused it with sauce to see if that would help - it did, but only marginally. Would help if they had better sauce. Now, I will say that I really liked their french fries & lima beans. Both quite tasty as was the cherry cobbler we had for dessert. Also sampled their black-eyed peas. Quite yummy, too. Make sure you grab one of their free cheddar biscuits while you wait for your food. We didn't see them until after our meal, but that didn't stop us from tasting one anyway. So so so so bland. The sauce is tasteless, the chicken on the sandwich was lukewarm. It was alright, but so plain, and I really don't want to have to pull a bone out that's bigger than any piece of chicken when I bite into my food. Meh. At least the sweet potato fries are good, and I thought the jalapeno cheese grits were pretty tasty. I really have nothing else to go by since that's the first time in my life I ever had grits. Definitely a fan. Like David K. said, interaction with staff is minimal. But at some places, you aren't there to chit chat with people, you are there to eat the food delivered to you and that is exactly what I wanted and got at Slope's. I was with a party of four, showed up around 6pm on a Tuesday and there was no one there. We ordered, sat down and within 10 minutes had out food. We all tried to order something different as this was our first time visiting this fine establishment (won't be our last) and I will review what we all had below. Pulled Pork Sandwich - Really good. Add your own sauce to whatever consistency you enjoy. Bread was good, not great, but I consider that a blessing because you do not want bread to overpower the pork. Cole slaw and mac n cheese were ordered as sides and they were both very good. Cole slaw was chopped fine and went perfectly on the sandwich. Mac n cheese was homemade, not over cheesy but had a great flavor. Brisket Sandwich (my order) - Very good brisket. I once again compare brisket to my all time favorite brisket (Smoque in Chicago) and while Slope's brisket was not as good as Smoque, it was the best brisket I have had in the Atlanta area (don't start yelling at me, I have not visited many BBQ joints around here, but I plan to and I will let you know, just have some faith). My bread was a bit soggy, which disappointed me BUT I ate it like an open faced sandwich and it was really good. Decent amount of bark on the brisket, which I prefer. I order mac n cheese and collard greens as my sides. Collard greens were good, chopped finer than I like with a good amount of chopped ham in them. Good flavor but we wondered if they were fresh greens or not. Either way, I ate them all. Side of Ribs - While the ribs did not have bark on them at all, the flavor was good and pulled right off the bone. Not the best ribs I have had but I would get them again. My absolutely favorite coleslaw and nicely crispy thin fries are what keeps me coming back here. I usually get the BBQ pork sandwich special with those two sides. My issue with the pork is that they remove the bark to use in the Brunswick stew leaving only the inner pork for sandwiches. This means that while the pork is moist and tender it doesn't have much (any?) smoked flavor. To me. BBQ is all about the smoked flavor in the meat. read more

This is a really great BBQ restaurant. There is a good variety of meats and other specials (I love the chili dogs). The service is fast and friendly, and the place is clean. The Brunswick stew and chopped pork sandwich are my go-to favorites. The sauce is a tomato-based thin (vinegar?) variety with a little bit of sweet and a little bit of pepper. I'm going to just give them a decent rating. This is just because the only thing I tried on the menu was their ribs. Got a full slab, ribs were meaty and they served them wet (no bueno). I'm not sure how they prepare their ribs but the bark was non-existent! Seriously, the is no barj whatsoever. The rivs were very tender, makes me think the have a good pulled pork.. Season was so so at best and you'll have to rely on the sauce for any flavor. I tried the mild/table sauce (blah) and the hot sauce (more like hot sauce than a hot BBQ sauce, but decent). They say a full slab is 12-13 ribs but I got 10. All in all, these ribs were not any better than anything I could make at home. If you're feeling lazy and don't feel like smoking ribs for 3 hours at house, then the $20 buck price point is perfect. So a friend of mine growing in the owner was great he recommended a three ribs pork plate. I came to this place because I had a Groupon for it and was new to the area. There were plenty of menu options. The first time I went I wanted the brisket but they were out, which I found happens at a lot of BBQ places. I got half a chicken, mac and cheese, beans and garlic toast the last time I went, and it was all good! The chicken was very juicy and flavorful, as were the beans. Mac and cheese was what you'd expect, and same with the toast. I also tried their 'nanner pudding. Very delicious! Their service is also extremely fast. I think we had to wait about 5 minutes for our food. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ, but if I ever have the hankering for it I would definitely go back to Slopes. read more

I also like the bbq sauce they use- it's kindof a combination of texas and north carolina- tangy, but not too vinigary, but not sweet. Love it!
